Hidden Figures: A Movie Review by AB
Hidden Figures
Imagine living during segregation where people saw you as less than not only because you were a woman, but because you were also Black. Segregation was a time of extreme sexism and race division so black women were seen as weak and incapable of doing the same tasks as white men. In the movie Hidden Figures produced in 2016, three African-American women were able to make history despite facing difficult obstacles along the way. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson were all able to use their brain power to successfully launch astronaut John Glenn into Orbit.
The acting in Hidden Figures was great and one of my favorite scenes was when Katherine Johnson had to explain to Mr. Harrison why she always took forty minutes to use the bathroom. Since they were all segregated during the time, White and Black people had separate areas to go to the bathroom and Mrs. Johnson had to run all the way to the West Campus which was half a mile away from where most of the white people would work. After she explained there was complete silence because the white people were probably all unaware of the hassle she had to go through just to have to go to the bathroom. This scene stuck out to me because after she was able to explain this fact, Mr. Harrison later made it so there were no separate bathrooms. This shows that if you are able to make some noise about a recurring issue, change might happen.
I would rate this movie a nine out of ten because it highlighted how Black people were awfully treated in work areas back then. Not only did it show race inequality, but they also showed gender inequality. This movie revealed that it shouldn’t matter what you look like, but what good things you are able to bring to the table. The acting was great and I believe that a lot of people who are close- minded can come to a realization that not everyone was treated fairly back then.

Today In History
Katherine Johnson was handpicked to be one of three black students to integrate West Virginia’s graduate schools is something that many people would consider one of their life’s most notable moments, but it’s just one of several breakthroughs that have marked Katherine Johnson’s long and remarkable life.
Born August 26, 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, her intense curiosity and brilliance with numbers vaulted her ahead several grades in school. By 13, she was attending the high school on the campus of historically black West Virginia State College. At 18, she enrolled in the college itself, where she made quick work of the school’s math curriculum and found a mentor in math professor W. W. Schieffelin Claytor, the third African American to earn a PhD in mathematics.
In 1962, as NASA prepared for the orbital mission of John Glenn, Johnson was called upon to do the work that she would become most known for. The complexity of the orbital flight had required the construction of a worldwide communications network, linking tracking stations around the world to IBM computers in Washington, Cape Canaveral in Florida, and Bermuda. The computers had been programmed with the orbital equations that would control the trajectory of the capsule in Glenn’s Friendship 7 mission from liftoff to splashdown, but the astronauts were wary of putting their lives in the care of the electronic calculating machines, which were prone to hiccups and blackouts.
As a part of the preflight checklist, Glenn asked engineers to “get the girl”—Johnson—to run the same numbers through the same equations that had been programmed into the computer, but by hand, on her desktop mechanical calculating machine. “If she says they’re good,’” Katherine Johnson remembers the astronaut saying, “then I’m ready to go.” Glenn’s flight was a success, and marked a turning point in the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in space.
