If you're a leftist in the US and on the fence about voting (not just for specific presidential candidates, I mean if you are on the fence about bothering to vote at all) this may be a good time to remember that you can still vote on not only representatives and circuit judges (who may be just as if not more important), but also on amendments.

In many states there are proposed amendments to either enshrine the right to reproductive care or to ban abortion entirely. There are proposals to increase minimum wage and labor rights, to reroute tax dollars, etc. There are proposals to funnel even more money into police unions that you can help strike down. There are amendments that will obviously harm everyone worded in a purposefully confusing way, just with a throwaway line written in for xenophobic voters to latch onto and approve.

The possible outcome of this election is scary regardless of who wins and voting will not solve every problem, but it will solve some that giving into apathy simply won't. This isn't going to end US Imperial interests either, but it will help protect many marginalized and oppressed populations from being harmed even more than we're already being, so that we can keep pushing for more.

yes exactly, I still am totally invested in taylor's music and tour and stuff but it's just all the other stuff that's tiring! I filtered by post content (since people generally would only tag with taylor's name which wasn't what I wanted to block) although I honestly didn't really find that much success, since a lot of posts were just generally alluding to the drama without any specific words, but I blocked breakup/break up/broke up/yogurt boy/joe (quickly unblocked that one when I realised I follow a couple of people with "joe" in their url and it was hiding all their posts). I'll probably add matty to the list too now which I think should cover a decent chunk of the current discussion!

Wow. The hearing for that bill was kinda wild.

So many people came to testify against it, and not even just asians, which was pretty surprising tbh.

A lot of them focused more on the emotional impact it had on them and the people they know, but I'm really glad there were also those who dove deeper and pointed out exactly which part of the bill that was concerning to them and why people were feeling this way. If it weren't for them, I think everyone would've been waived off as completely misinterpreting the intention of the bill entirely...

196 Migration

If you’re not aware, the subreddit r/196 is going offline tomorrow (the 12th) in a protest along with multiple other subreddits against a decision reddit has made to their API pricing. 196 is one of the largest LGBT centric meme subreddits. The deal being that 196 will be shut down until reddit backs down from their stupid decision. Other subreddits are only going to be offline for a few days. 196 held this massive decision to a poll where about 60% said the subreddit should be privated indefinitely. Despite what people say, this will be an almost certain permanent end to the Subreddit. I think that anyone who believes that the chance of 196 coming back after the 12th has not thought it through very much and I consider this putting this to a poll to have been very stupid on the moderators parts as a lot of people clearly do not fully understand the likely outcome.

In short, Reddit is going to win this no matter how it’s sliced. Reddit will only back down their decision if the money they can squeeze from API pricing is larger than the loss in ad revenue from the protest. Many large subreddits that are closing will only be down for a few days. This results in a small dip in site usage, yes, but it definitely won’t cause significant issue to Reddit. However when all these subreddits come back there will be an uptick in site traffic, generating Reddit more money. The only way Reddit will lose money is with a decrease in active users, which is why some people want the subreddit to go down indefinitely, they want to leave Reddit and take many 196 users with them. Reddit definitely will not be backing down, the chance of that happening is minuscule. Therefore 196 will not come back.

196 is a special community on Reddit as it one of the largest subreddits with a strong LGBT presence and unique culture. 196 leaving will have many negative effects on the Reddit ecosystem. There are other LGBT subreddits that will very likely be shutting down too (for other reasons) such as r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns which is one of the largest trans subreddits. 196 has a large overlap with circle jerk subreddits, over the past year or so the relationship between 196 users and circle jerk subreddits has been quite important as they essentially have formed their own ecosystem as a place that LGBT teens and young adults feel comfortable in when Reddit as a whole is more dangerous. When 196 closes some people will leave for Tumblr TikTok and Twitter due to their main source of posts going dry. Circle jerk subs will start to reduce down to the users that do not consume content from 196, a group of people that is on average more conservative than the subreddits as wholes are with 196 users. This political shift on circle jerk subreddits will cause two things, 1: lgbt people feeling less comfortable on circle jerk subs and 2: circle jerk subs doing less circle jerking, due to less users and also a reduced interest in calling out bigoted posts on other subreddits. That will very likely become a negative feedback loop where circle jerk subs become increasingly similar to Reddit as a whole. And the effect that this will have on Reddit is going to be a general trend to become more conservative as the socially progressive community on Reddit shrinks with 196s departure. It’s likely a new or existing subreddit will replace 196 (a subreddit with less moderation tools and none of the user blacklists from 196), but by the time that subreddit comes about it will not reach the size 196 did. 196 leaving will have a permanent impact on Reddit as atleast some people will be reducing Reddit activity of leaving permanently. Reddit likely won’t become a new 4chan, but I would not be surprised if it became more similar to Facebook.

And a trans woman I must also feel the need to say that with r/traa and 196 very likely closing a large community of transfems will be displaced online. In the past 6 years Ive been a trans woman on the internet I can say fairly confidently that Reddit has been one of the most popular sites for trans women to congregate at, along with discord. Trans women are very likely a majority of the trans community on Reddit however on other sites like TikTok and here on tumblr trans women are definitely a smaller minority of the community. I feel like I should’ve just put that out. Right now is a scary time to be a young trans woman and two of the largest online places of support for young trans women closing doors will have negative impacts on the trans community.

Many 196 users who are smart enough to see what lies ahead are finding ways of congregating outside of Reddit. Besides the small social media sites that will obviously die before getting off the ground, tumblr is the most recommended place to call a new home. I know this sounds familiar to what happened with twitter, and the idea of Redditors coming to tumblr is quite scary. But I assure that 196 users are not dissimilar to tumblr users.

196 users migrating here to tumblr are using the tags #196 and #r/196. I will be posting some of my 196 and old r/traa posts under these. As a pseudo archive. I’ll also reblog and post as some of my favorite posts I wish to remember. Hopefully a migration of 196 users to tumblr is successful (though unlikely), if that happens I will try to post memes in the style of 196 posts. Kyle Carrozza, the creator of Mighty Magiswords, has been arrested for the possession of child sexual abuse material

Kyle’s inner circle (that includes Jane Amber and Tony Goldmark) absolutely knew about him being a creep. There were multiple other survivors, including Ang Vondra, about which the lovely Jane and Tony said this

Jane was so hellbent on stalking, harassing, abusing and slandering Ang Vondra for many years, even helped blacklisting Ang from the animation industry along with Kyle and Tony Goldmark. Though of course, they’re all back paddling now!

Reminder, these people harassed someone because they were coping from their abuse with cartoons on a private account. These people have absolutely no shame and no heart

they knew Kyle was a predator. They chose to ignore it because it was easier to make life of a disabled abuse survivor a living hell

Ang’s disability has now progressed to the point that a miracle would be needed to cure them. Years of being unable to afford their basic needs has led to a worsening of their health, all because a white creep decided blacklisting Ang from the animation industry, likely the only place Ang actually could work at with their disability, and boot lickers helping him, was more important!

These people aren’t sorry. They just pretend they are. Other people are still going on about how coping with art on a private account is just as bad as a sexual abuser in the animation industry, who got away with it for years

On top of this this implicates a significant part of the animation industry as having actively covered up for a pedophile, and not just that, but doing it by framing a CSA survivor over their cope art. That would mean that they took advantage of the moral panic over art

People are currently suffering through in order to enable a predator. And they did it by abusing a survivor. Using a desire to protect fictional characters. We warned about this scenario happening, were ignored, and it happened.

2024 EVENT SCHEDULE:

Mods will message all participants on November 20th with their preferred method of communication and give them the wishlist of the person they will be making a gift for. Everyone will have a month to create their gift.

There will be a check-in midway through to ensure all participants are working on, or are still interested in working on their gift. This is mandatory, but please don't stress about it even if you haven't started on your gift at that time! It's just us checking on your progress and ensuring we have active contact with all participants.

Submit your gift to hoshinokaabi.secretsanta@gmail.com by email once you're finished. If you'd like, you may include a message to your recipient in the same email, which will be posted publicly alongside your gift on December 24-25th. Submitting finished gifts through email is highly preferred, but if you're really not comfortable with that, or don't have an email, you may private message us your gift instead.

RULES:

Your gift must follow your recipient's wishlist and respect their blacklist.

Your gift must be finished. We're purposely keeping the definition of "finished" vague, but it should at the very least have color and, if your gift is a drawing, have little to no sketch or construction lines. If you are submitting writing, your finished work must be a minimum of 1200 words (but can be however long you'd like) and should be able to be read standalone, with no additional context or chapters needed.

No NSFW/18+ content is allowed in this event. Our definition of NSFW covers both explicit/pornographic content and extreme gore. You may not request nor gift it. Any romantic pairings involving minors and adults together are also banned.

Do not post about your gift or who you're gifting for before gifts are revealed. This also extends to not posting WIPS and not messaging your giftee. Additionally, if you have a question for your giftee, message us and we will relay the question for you.

If during the event, you think you need to drop out, or need an extension, please message us as early as possible.

WISHLISTS:

Make a wishlist using Google Docs or a .txt file. If using Google Docs, your wishlist must be able to be viewed by anyone with the link. If you do not know how to make your document public, click here for a tutorial.

List at least two characters and at least three prompts. Order them top to bottom from most wanted to least wanted.

At the bottom of your wishlist, have a blacklist section listing what you do not want to gift and what you do not want to receive for any reason. Make the "gifting blacklist" and the "receiving blacklist" each their own section. The gifting blacklist will help us assign you to a suitable partner, while the receiving blacklist will inform your santa what not to make for you.

To make this event friendly to all artists of all skill levels, characters from other series are not permitted. OCs that are not Kirby OCs or not in the Kirby universe are also not permitted.

Gijinkas and Kirby OCs/FCs are allowed, but you must provide a reference for their design.

POSTING:

All gifts will be posted on this blog on December 24-25th (with roughly half of the gifts being posted each day), listing both the gifter and giftee along with a note the gifter left, if they left one. Once the gift you made is posted, you may post it on other sites and show it anywhere you please.

PORTFOLIO:

The sign-up sheet will ask you for a portfolio.

For artists who draw and crafters: make a Google Drive folder showing at least three (but up to ten) finished pieces of yours. You can also just link to any art posts you've made, or include links to the images themselves. As long as we can see your art, it's all good. We ask this to ensure all participants are eligible to participate (for example, we wouldn't accept someone who has no finished art, or is unable to take photos of their art in good quality). Using the results of this poll, which we are reran again this year, we are also using this portfolio to assign partners based on skill level. Again, if you use Google Drive, please make sure your folder is visible to everyone who has the link.

For writers: Please link any clean writing work you've done. You are only required to show one piece minimum, but at least one piece (out of however many you chose to link) must be at least 1200 words. The work(s) you link do not have to be considered finished, but they should be clean (not drafts, and with reasonably good spelling and grammar).

If you can gift multiple types of art, you can include examples of all of those types of art in your portfolio. It's not required, but it will help us pair you. Please follow one set of requirements above, at minimum.

Other things to keep in mind:

You may make as many gifts for your recipient as you'd like, as long as they follow their wishlist. The more the merrier, as they say. But the minimum (and the default!) is just one gift. Don't feel pressured to make multiple.

If you're gifting traditional art, make sure you're able to either scan it, or photograph it in good lighting and in good quality. Ideally the picture should be cropped so that any sort of background is not visible.

Physical crafts and other gifts of that nature should likewise be photographed in good lighting and good quality.

Going a little wild with your gift is a-okay. Extra things like animation, comics, fancy backgrounds, etc, are very welcome. (Though if it happens anyone doesn't want to receive these things for whatever reason, note it on your blacklist).

When someone posted in a private Facebook group for Chicago therapists in March, asking whether anyone would be willing to work with a Zionist client, several Jewish therapists quickly responded, saying they would be happy to be connected to this person. 

What happened next sparked fear and outrage among Jewish therapists in Chicago and across the country, and illuminated the atmosphere of intimidation and harassment faced by many Jews in the mental health world who won’t disavow Zionism. Those who replied, offering their services to this unnamed client, soon found themselves added to a list of supposedly Zionist therapists that was shared in a group called “Chicago Anti-Racist Therapists.”

“I’ve put together a list of therapists/practices with Zionist affiliations that we should avoid referring clients to,” Heba Ibrahim Joudeh, the document’s author, wrote. (A request for comment sent to the practice she runs with her husband did not receive a response.) The administrator of the anti-racist group chimed in, praising the list as a way “to be transparent about clinicians who promote and facilitate White supremacy via Zionism.” The comments came quickly: “Amazing, thank you,” one person wrote. “Omg a place I was looking at is on here,” another wrote, with angry emojis. 

The only trait shared by the 26 therapists on the list is that they are Jewish. “When I saw this whole list created and my name on the list, I was so confused and in disbelief about how, in 2024, this is considered OK. It was a list of Jews,” said Anna Finkelshtein, a licensed clinical social worker in Chicago who immigrated from Russia as a child. “I do not post publicly about the conflict or about Israel at all, ever. It feels like the only way to feel safe as a Jew in the mental health field is to publically speak out against Israel and condemn it and call it a genocide.”

The anti-Zionist blacklist is the most extreme example of an anti-Israel wave that has swept the mental health field since the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks and the resulting war in Gaza, which has seen the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians. More than a dozen Jewish therapists from across the country who spoke to Jewish Insider described a profession ostensibly rooted in compassion, understanding and sensitivity that has too often dropped those values when it comes to Jewish and Israeli providers and clients. 

At best, these therapists say their field has been willing to turn a blind eye to the antisemitism that they think is too rampant to avoid. At worst, they worry the mental health profession is becoming inhospitable to Jewish practitioners whose support for Israel puts them outside the prevailing progressive views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“The goal in therapy is to provide compassionate care to whoever walks through your door,” Dean McKay, a professor of psychology at Fordham University, told JI. “As part of our training — I don’t remember in my own training, and it’s not the way that I train anybody else, to ever say, ‘Look, here are the people who are worthy of our care.’”

“We all worried that it could get this bad, but I don’t think any of us were actually expecting it to happen,” said Halina Brooke, a licensed professional counselor in Phoenix, Ariz. Four years ago, she created an organization called the Jewish Therapist Collective to build community among Jewish professionals and raise the alarm about an undercurrent of antisemitism in the field. “Once Oct. 7 hit, we’ve all been in crisis mode since literally that morning, and the stories that have come in from colleagues and about their clients have been horrifying.”

The antisemitism problem in the mental health profession is more than just workplace gossip. Jewish therapists — and Jewish clients — worry about how the growing anti-Israel orthodoxy will show up in clients’ sessions, and if it will affect their care, especially at a time when more people than ever are seeking therapy. A Gallup survey showed that in 2022, 23% of American adults had visited a mental health professional in the prior year, compared to 13% in 2004.

So, apparently in his interview yesterday with a journalist he knew well, he pointed at the interviewers bracelets and said “what happened here? This guy kicks to the other side”

Now, I am not a Spanish speaker, nor am I a native Argentinian who can weigh in more closely on the cultural nature of this, but it seems to be the consensus of speakers on Reddit that while it might be more culturally common, and he was speaking to a friend, it’s still not great because it’s similar to saying “that shirt makes you look gay”.

It is unfortunately the nature of being a global sport that not all countries are on the same level of progress about comments like this, and Franco is young. I’m not gonna label him a homophobe outright for it. Nor do I think he should be forever blacklisted for it

However what is abundantly clear is he needs media training, now. Everyone (franco included) made jokes about him being untrained, and this is what happens. To me, it doesn’t really matter if the interviewer was his friend, it’s not great and it’s really not appropriate in a professional setting, especially in front of the camera, and speaks to an immaturity he shouldn’t be displaying if he wants a seat next year.

It’s not great that when I was looking this up I was seeing a lot of homophobic posts cheering him on. Homophobic or not, you probably shouldn’t be saying stuff that makes those people think you agree with them.

(yesterday) i worked on the first bg again. before, i was tryna like... do minimal effort to save myself some time since i have to do SO much art for this

but i hated the way it looked. it was just awful. so i've decided to do the lighting like i normally would instead of the low effort thing

it's much better now, and i'm happy with how it's coming along. still concerned about how much effort it is to do, cause it's so time consuming but maybe it'll get easier/faster the more i do it?
