I was told she’d already turned down the opportunity to pose for one of the most prestigious ad campaigns then in progress: the fur industry’s Peter Rogers’ “What Becomes A Legend Most?” series, for which Richard Avedon photographed top stars, past and present, wearing designer mink coats. Their payment for posing: the costly coat (each worth well over $20,000). Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland — and contemporary legends including Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand — along with Ava’s close pal, Lena Horne, were among those who had participated thus far.
Ava Gardner’s reason for turning down the opportunity: “I no longer wear dead animals on my back, honey.” And this was years before the founding of PETA! (x)
Many thanks @graciemonaco

This ad ran in 1970 and I remember keeping just this page from the NYT Sunday Magazine.
Photo by Richard Avedon. The shot was not posed; he said something to her and she turned around to scold him - and he captured that instant which became the photo used for the ad.

“Hollywood’s most representative “Great Movie Star” and the screen’s finest personification of no-holds-barred ambition, Joan Crawford created her own screen persona early, doubtless basing it on her own desperate climb from the bottom of society and pushed this screen image to the very peak of stardom. The outward manifestations changed, but the core of the image never altered: she was a tough, shrewd, determined woman who wanted the best things in life and would do anything to get them – even murder. “I love to play bitches,” she once said, and in the end, she came to symbolize the bitch-goddess success, the dark side of the American dream. She looked like a star, she behaved like a star, she was a star.”
/ From The Illustrated Encyclopedia of The World’s Great Movie Stars (1979) by Ken Wlaschin /
Born on this day: the fierce and regal Miss Joan Crawford (née Lucille LeSueur on 23 March somewhere between 1904 and 1908. The precise year of Crawford’s birth is contested although 1906 seems to be generally accepted). Pictured: the diva photographed by Richard Avedon and flourishing a Blackglama mink coat in the ad campaign “What Becomes a Legend Most” for Vogue magazine, 1 October 1969.

Buy a Luxury Fur Parka Online
Whether you wear it before your water session to warm up, in-between sessions to re-heat or after to restore your core temperature, this windproof parka will keep you toasty. It features a fur hood and lining, and is available in both mens and womens sizes.
Fjallraven designs outdoors gear that toes the line between casual and performance. Its Nuuk parka has 8.8 ounces of Supreme Microloft synthetic insulation and a weatherproof shell.
Real Fur Coats for Women and Men
For the men and women in your life who love a subtle luxury Christmas gift, a men's real mink or fox genuine fur parkas coat is an ideal choice. While furriers don't typically put the gender a fur coat was designed for on the label, heavier furs are usually designed with men in mind and lighter furs are geared towards women.
A genuine fur coat is a high-quality fashion accessory that's meant to last a long time. It's also a great way to express your personality and sense of style with a touch of elegance that's difficult to find in fast fashion.
Chinchilla Coats
Chinchilla fur is a luxury material that exudes glamour and elegance. It has a rich, dense hand feeling that feels velvety to the touch. It is a favorite among celebrities, royalty, and wealthy people.
A chinchilla coat is a rare item because it requires the skill of a fur master. Fur craftsmen stich the pelts together to create an elegant look. They may stitch the pelts in a diagonal pattern or horizontally.
Since chinchillas are tiny, it takes many of them to make one perfect fur coat. Because of this, it is one of the most expensive coats.
Sable Coats
This precious real fur hood coats is known for its beauty, luxury, and class. It is the most expensive fur in the world, and it requires minimal dressing and processing, allowing it to retain its natural appearance.
It is also resistant to stains, so it does not stain easily and can be brushed to get rid of any dirt or marks. Sable is often used as an accent on women’s clothing, such as a shawl or jacket.
A Russian-made sable coat is a great choice for anyone who wants to look elegant and sophisticated. It goes well with a light dress and high-heeled boots.
Mink Coats
Real fur parka has been a symbol of luxury and extravagance since the 1950s, when women would wear fur coats, capes and stoles passed down to them by their grandmothers. While fur fell out of fashion in recent years, many people still seek to buy mink coats and other types of real fur clothing.
A high-quality mink fur coat can cost upwards of $8,000, depending on the color and country of origin. Look for a smooth, even texture and uniform length. Mink coats made from blackglama, pearl or mahogany fur typically have a more expensive price tag than white mink coats.
Lynx Coats
Lynx coats are a bold, head-turning choice for winter fashion. Natural coloring and spotted patterns make each garment one-of-a-kind.
A coat made from the white spotted belly of this rare fur type is the most valuable. The rest of the pelt is also used for garment production. A lynx fur jacket can cost more than $100,000.
Often combined with sheared beaver or Persian lamb for collar, trim or interior hood lining lynx fur spruces up flat designs. They are also a good choice for lining hats. The pelts of lynx come exclusively from regulated hunting and trapping.
Fox Coats
Fox fur is one of the most luxurious and eye-catching types of fur. It is used in coats, vests, boleros, and full-length jackets.
It is also used in hats and accessories. Fox is an ideal fur to accent other lush garments like shearling and mink coats.
The price of a fox coat depends on the type of fox used, as well as the manufacturing process. For example, a fox coat made with Chinese pelts is usually cheaper than those made in Europe.
Fox fur is durable and can last for years with proper care. However, it does shed occasionally.
Wrapping Fur Stole
Stoles are a great accessory when you need something to keep your shoulders warm but don’t have room for a full coat. They also make a beautiful wrap for weddings, balls, and other formal events. This faux fur stole wrap has lined pockets, so it’s perfect for keeping your hands warm.
To get the most out of your fur stole, pair it with other items made from real or faux fur, like a hat, shoes, or purse. You can also look for accessories in the same color as your fur stole to create a cohesive outfit.

Many legendary stars, men and women alike, posed for Blackglama Mink Furs under the ‘What Becomes A Legend Most?’ ad campaign from 1968 to 1994. The name Blackglama is an ad agency’s amalgam of the words ‘Black’ for the color of the minks used and the 'Great Lakes Minks Association' (GLAMA) of Kenosha, WI. Lucille’s 1984 photo session as spokesperson did not go well and she was very uncomfortable about the whole process. Initially, she was to appear in a less sophisticated pose with blacked out teeth and messy tousled hair reminiscent of her look as 'The Queen of the Gypsies' from her 'I Love Lucy' days. At the last minute she agreed to change her look, at husband Gary's request, and take a more glamourous approach. A decision she would later regret. "I heard the shoot was a disaster. Lucy was a nervous wreck and drove everybody crazy. Gary held Lucy's hand and reassured her. She blamed him for getting her involved in the first place. Way's (Bandy) was much too heavy and in the end Lucy looked mummified. The coat never fit right on her body no matter how they draped or pinned it. In fact it wasn’t even a coat at all—just some skins loosely sewn together.”—Lee Tannen, I Loved Lucy, My Friendship With Lucille Ball. #lucilleball #blackglama #fur #mink #adcampaigns #ad #advertising #glamour #legends #photosession #amalgam #minkcoat #minkfarms #minkranch #waynelvslcy #mummified #heavymakeup #ilovelucy https://www.instagram.com/p/CnPuucHPmcy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
