"Ride with Death"SPEEDWOLF

MOTORHEAD、VENOM標榜系って、もうそれやる事で既にカッコよくなっちゃう印象があって、なんかずるいよなぁ。スウェーデンGEHENNAとか、ノルウェーINFERNOとかね。このアメリカのSPEEDWOLFもその系統。オーストラリアのTRENCH HELLなんてバンドもちょっと思い出したり。普通の初期スラッシュの感触もあって、そういう音楽が好きなら気に入らないことはない��しょ。日本盤も出てそれなりに話題になりましたけど、これ、HELLS HEADBANGERS Recordsリリースなのよね。HHR作品が日本盤出てしまうとは。でもキャッチーな作品ですから、納得。

Thom Wells takes a look at Season Dreaming Death, the upcoming album from CDM favourites, Indianapolis blackened thrash metal act Graveripper, set for release on August 25th with our good friends over at Wise Blood Records.

I feel like a massive metal renaissance is going on, and there are so many great bands out there that I feel spoiled by the riches of it all. Take GraveRipper, for example. Season Dreaming Death is yet another fantastic release this year. If you are reading this review, you should pay serious attention to this band. After listening to the first song, I was hooked and pre-ordered the record. Trust me when I say it doesn’t happen often when I hear just one song and buy the record.

"Seventh Day of Doom"TORMENTOR

所謂ブラックメタルと今日言われる音楽は、1990年代初頭のノルウェーで突発的に表れたかのように伝えられがちだが、この辺の歴史をより細やかに紐解くと、そのルーツは意外なほど各国の多くのバンドによって積み上げられてきていることがわかる。ヴォーカルのAttilaがMAYHEMに参加しているハンガリーのTORMENTORもそんなバンドの一つであり、その認知は今なお十分とはいえない。

本作は彼らの1作目のデモテープをCD化したものだ。全9曲なのでボリューム面では心配いらないが、音質はどう繕ってもデモテープなので、そうした音源に慣れていない人は心構えが要りそう。本作のブックレット内の挿絵を"Pleasure to Kill"のカバーアートからパクってるところを鑑みると、バンド名も恐らくKREATORの曲名からだろう。しかし音楽のほうはKREATORとはかなりかけ離れている。MERCYFUL FATEのスラッシュメタル版的な発想なのだろうか。4曲目"Infinite Darkness"にそうしたアプローチが凝縮されているが、謎の奇声や高笑いの数々は、King Diamondどころではないマジキチの一言。ここからは後年、かなり多くのバンドが影響を受けていくのではないか。現在はSeason of Mistから再発されていることもありかなり容易に入手も出来るし、ブラックメタルの理解を進めたい向きは是非聞くべきだ。
