Lucifer, Satan & other Devils: The Occult art of Rosaleen Norton, the Witch of Kings Cross
‘Lucifer and the Goat Mendes.’
The most notorious witch in Australian history was an artist named Rosaleen Norton (1917-79) who scandalized her ultra-conservative homeland with her outrageous bohemian lifestyle and strange occult beliefs during the 1950s.
The press dubbed Norton the “Witch of Kings Cross”—a low-rent artists’ quarter and red light district in Sydney, New South Wales. They claimed she was an evil Satanist who revelled in perverted Black Masses and unnatural orgies with her sex-mad coven. It was true Rosaleen (Roie to her friends) liked sex with both men and women. She enjoyed sex and saw no shame in admitting that she did. She also practised sex magick and made no secret of its powers. But Rosaleen was no Satanist. She was a pagan who followed her own particular belief in Pan.
From earliest childhood Rosaleen felt she was different—and felt compelled to prove this indeed was the case. As her friend and biographer Nevill Drury later recalled:
[Rosaleen] revelled in being the odd one out, purporting to despise her schoolmates. She argued continuously with her mother. She ‘hated’ authority figures like headmistresses, policemen, politicians and priests. She had no time at all for organised religion, and the gods she embraced - a cluster of ancient gods centred around Pan - were, of course, pagan to the hilt. She regarded Pan as the God of Infinite Being.
Pan was undoubtedly a rather unusual god for a young woman to be worshipping in Australia. But then Roie was different. And she was different in an age when it was quite a lot harder to be different than it is now. She was bohemian, bisexual, outspoken, rebellious and thoroughly independent in an era when most young ladies growing up on Sydney’s North Shore would be thinking simply of staying home, happily married with a husband and children. Roie was not afraid to say what she thought, draw her pagan images on city pavements, or flaunt her occult beliefs in the pages of the tabloids. To most people who read about her in newspapers and magazines she was simply outrageous.
Rosaleen was certainly outrageous. She was expelled from school for drawing pictures of vampires, pentagrams and demons during art class, which were claimed to have terrified her fellow classmates. In 1952, when a collection of her work was first published in book form as The Art of Rosaleen Norton three of the images contained therein—“Black Magic” (which depicted Rosaleen herself having sex with a panther), “Rites of Baron Samedi” and “Fohat” (which depicted a demon with a large muscled snake for a penis)—caused such offence that the publisher was prosecuted for obscenity and the pictures removed from all future printings. In America the book was deemed so pornographic that all imported copies were destroyed by custom officials.
Worse was to follow in 1955 when a woman named Anna Karina Hoffman was arrested for vagrancy. When questioned by police, Hoffman claimed she had participated in horrific Satanic black masses organized by Rosaleen. It was this accusation that led the tabloid press to dub Rosaleen the “Witch of Kings Cross” and promulgate the series of trumped-up news stories about her lurid (s)excesses.
However, the following year, one of her lovers, the highly respected composer Sir Eugene Goossens was arrested by Australian customs for attempting to bring some 800 pornographic images into the country—many of them marked “SM” for “sex magick.” The ensuing investigation by officials was heavily detailed by the press. It destroyed Goossens’ career and further denigrated Rosaleen’s character.
Still Rosaleen continued on her own way—painting pictures, following her own religious beliefs, enjoying a varied and active sex life and even dropping LSD to “induce visionary states” to enhance her awareness as an artist.
It was this visionary aspect which was at the heart of Rosaleen’s art:
From an early age she had a remarkable capacity to explore the visionary depths of her subconscious mind, and the archetypal beings she encountered on those occasions became the focus of her art. It was only later that Roie was labelled a witch, was described as such in the popular press, and began to develop the persona which accompanied that description. As this process gathered momentum, Roie in turn became intent on trying to demonstrate that she had been born a witch. After all, she had somewhat pointed ears, small blue markings on her left knee, and also a long strand of flesh which hung from underneath her armpit to her waist - a variant on the extra nipple sometimes ascribed to witches in the Middle Ages.
Roie’s personal beliefs were a strange mix of magic, mythology and fantasy, but derived substantially from mystical experiences which, for her, were completely real. She was no theoretician. Part of her disdain for the public at large, I believe, derived from the fact that she felt she had access to a wondrous visionary universe - while most people lived lives that were narrow, bigoted, and based on fear. Roie was very much an adventurer - a free spirit - and she liked to fly through the worlds opened to her by her imagination.
Roie’s art reflected this. It was her main passion, her main reason for living. She had no career ambitions other than to reflect on the forces within her essential being, and to manifest these psychic and magical energies in the only way she knew how. As Roie’s older sister Cecily later told me, art was the very centre of her life, and Roie took great pride in the brief recognition she received when the English critic and landscape artist John Sackville-West described her in 1970 as one of Australia’s finest artists, alongside Norman Lindsay. It was praise from an unexpected quarter, and it heartened Roie considerably because she felt that at last someone had understood her art and had responded to it positively. All too often her critics had responded only to her outer veneer - the bizarre and often distorted persona created by the media - and this was not the ‘real’ Roie at all.
Today no one would I doubt if anyone would bat an eyelid at Rosaleen’s lifestyle or beliefs—which shows how much our world has evolved. This year marks the centenary of her birth which should bring a new assessment of her life and work and introduce a new generation to the artist behind Australia’s most notorious witch.
‘Black Magic.’
‘Self Portrait with Occult Animals and Symbols.’
‘Fohat’—a demon with a snake dick or as Rosaleen described it: ‘The goat is the symbol of energy and creativity: the serpent of elemental force and eternity.’
‘Untitled.’
‘Bacchanal.’
‘Jester.’
Black Magick.’
‘Wer-Plon.’
‘Geburah.’
‘Belpiglet.’
‘The Blueprint.’
‘Triumph.’
Rosaleen Norton, January 1950.

I am still very new to this website and I don’t know how link a post but this fic is based on a post by @sandersgrey
(If someone reading this knows how to link a post please either explain it to me or link it in the comments because that post is *amazing*)
“Hmmm,” said Tessa, depositing Mina into Kit’s waiting arms and examining her buzzing phone critically. She shot a quizzical look in his direction.
Jem looked up from his novel. “What is ‘hmmm’, my love?”
Kit mimed vomiting but stopped dead in his tracks when she replied, “it’s Astrid’s mother. You remember her from parent teacher night, don’t you, my darling?” Kit swears they were being extra insufferable just to mess with him but he didn’t have the time to be annoyed when Astrid’s. Mom. Was. Calling. Tessa.
To understand why Kit was panicking as much as he was, you must know that Astrid’s mom was incredibly chill. She never got mad. The worst punishment she’d ever given her daughter was taking away her iPod for a week so she couldn’t listen to Mitski.
Was she calling about last night when Astrid, Mari and Kit threw eggs at the Shadowhunter’s that were giving Mari’s pack a hard time for no reason? No, that couldn’t be it. She’d given them the eggs.
Could the call be about the day before yesterday when Kit and Astrid got distracted doing homework and ended up snapping the coffee table clean in half while battling gladiator style with pool noodles? No, that wasn’t it. She’d just handed Astrid a twenty and told them to go to Kevin’s parents' shop and get a new one. Was she pissed because they ended up spending the money on ice cream instead? No, they ended up finding a table for free in the rubbing bin outside a fancy hotel.
Kit clutched his sister to his chest and prepared for the worst.
“Seo-yoon! What can I do for- Oh, hello Astrid!” Tessa paused briefly, presumably to listen to Astrid speak, and Kit sighed in relief.
“Kit is occupied at the moment but I can relay the message.” Another pause. “Oh don’t be frightened of me. I’m a tots rad mom. Your secret is safe with me.” Kit felt his face flush red as he heard his best friend’s laughter echo across the living room. “Okay! I’ll let him know. He has to get Mina to sleep before he can leave though. Lord knows he’s the only one who can these days.” Tessa chuckled at something Astrid said before wishing her good luck in her endeavour and ending the call.
She turned her attention back to Kit. “Astrid needs your help breaking into your teacher’s home to retrieve her cell phone.”
Kit blinked at her, dumbfounded. “You aren’t mad I’m going to go break the law?”
Because of course he was doing it. Astrid’s dad had bought it for her and he was extremely cautious about money. That was one of three things Kit knew about her dad. He was cheap, he lived in America and he loved the movie Fight Club.
Tessa ruffled Kit’s hair affectionately. “Please. I’ve raised two other Herondales. At least I know about this particular adventure beforehand.”
Mina began snoring softly and Kit handed her back to her mother. He grabbed his bag and started his journey to the door when Tessa added, “she also told me to say hi to a ‘daddy Kit’. Are you ‘daddy Kit?’”
‘Daddy Kit’ closed his eyes and wished for the sweet release of death.
“Why is Kit a daddy,” Jem asked, genuinely confused. “Aren’t I the daddy?”
Kit swung the door open so fast not even a speed rune could have aided him. But not before I heard Tessa reply, “Lily Chen certainly thinks so.”
Mrs. MacNamara clapped her hands together. “Why don’t we all go around and say a few things about ourselves?”
Kit buried his face into his hands. He’d been relieved when no other teacher had fulfilled the Disney channel stereotype of making every student introduce themselves to the new kid. But Mrs. MacNamara didn’t even seem to realize what she was doing.
All Kit’s fellow classmates groan. Expect one. Her hand shot up immediately. She was short, like smaller than Clary short. She wore a baggy pink shirt with the words ‘Queen Glimmer of Etheria’ sewed on with purple sequins and tight black jeans. Her colourful, choppy hair was in a low ponytail and she flew a few strands out of her eyes as her hand wiggled in the hair.
Mrs. MacNamara pointed at her. She stood up and smiled at Kit. “Hi. My name is Astrid. My hobbies include making my little cousin’s girl Barbies kiss, as it should be, and watching television shows where everyone is a terrible person so you can love all of them!”
“And what shows might that be?” asked Kit, already in the process of pulling out his phone and opening the Notes app.
“Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy again because it’s seventeen seasons as of right now. And to be fair it practically became a different show when they killed off Mark Sloan.”
“That’s enough, Miss Yang,” said Mrs. MacNamara. Astrid sat down and winked at Kit. Then she took out her phone and airdropped him a complete list of all her favorite shows, along with her number.
After Blessica’s pre-birthday birthday party, they went to Cirenworth and stayed up till four A.M. binging them.
They met outside a queer dry bar called Aries Not Welcome, the unspoken gathering place of the Merry Hoes. It was run by a poly lesbian couple in their mid-thirties. Quinn, Sydney and Aliyah may not have served alcohol but at least they were open 24/7.
“Did you bring the shit?”
Kit gave her a look. “The shit? How conclusive.”
“Shut up. You know, the shadowhunter thing.”
“The shadowhunter thing?”
“The, the, the glow stick that you draw with.”
“The glow stick that I draw wi-“ Kit closed his eyes briefly. “Do you mean a stele?”
Astrid snapped her fingers. “That’s it!” Kit shook his head in exasperation, smiling fondly. “I borrowed a torch from Quinn, let’s move.”
“Should I be worried that you know where Mr. Smith lives?” questioned Kit as he followed Astrid’s lead through the park.
“Should I be worried that your mom was fine with us breaking and entering?” she shot back playfully. Kit pushed Astrid and she fell off the path, laughing all the way.
“You called me ‘daddy’ to my mom’s face.”
She just laughed harder, slinging her arm around Kit’s shoulder. “It was over the phone, Christopher. And as I should.”
“Pffffttt. Why did you get your phone taken anyway?” She put her hands into her jumper pocket and looked at the ground. “Astrid.” She remained silent. “Astrid?”
She mumbled something under her breath. “What?” asked Kit.
“I WAS READING NINEJ FANFICTION!” she shouted.
Kit gasped. “I thought you were a die hard Kanej shipper,” he whispered.
“I’m a multishipper, okay?!” she replied, equally quiet.
“Does Blessica know?”
She shook her head. “And she will never find out.”
Kit saw the opportunity and he seized it. “She’ll never find out as long as you never call me daddy in front of either of my parents.”
She removed her arm from his shoulder and guided them out of the park, in the direction of the many apartments that lined this side of town. “I hate you.”
“Well, so does Mari. You're not special, Ast.”
She rolled her eyes. “You know Mari doesn’t actually hate you, right?! They’re just still in the enemy phase of your enemies-to-lovers romance. She only dislikes you because they feel something for you but they don’t know what so she interrupts it as loathing. In reality, her inner soul knows you’re hot and shmexie.”
Kit didn’t know how to process this so he just nodded and follow Astrid in silence to Mr. Smith’s house. (Plus, he was kinda glad that, according to his best friend, he had a little more time for Mari to ‘discover their true feelings’. If Kit screwed this up, he was out of countries to run off to.)
“Oh you have got to be fucking kidding me.”
“What,” asked Kit, turning around to face Astrid and closing the drawer he was rifling through. “Did you find your phone?”
“Yeah. But I also found Blessica’s. She was Snapping Kevin. Platonic my ass. But he took the fucking trans flag out of her phone!”
Kit snatched Blessica’s phone out of her hand to examine it for herself. She was telling the truth. Where the glitter pride flag usually rested was just a clear purple case. Kit couldn’t believe his eyes.
“It’s one thing to misgender her every day.” Blessica had forced all four of the other Merry Hoes to sign a contract saying they wouldn’t do anything to harm him because of it. “But this is the last straw. You know what we have to do.” Oops.
“Yeah, but we don’t have any spray paint.”
Kit eyed Mr. Smith’s pink sofa, blue bar stool covers and white picture frames. “I think I have something better in mind.”
It would have been easier for both parties to just zip off the sofa cushions and tape them to the wall but by ripping them off in strips, they ensured he would have to buy new ones. And judging by the car he drove and the fiji water in his fridge, Mr. Smith could definitely afford it.
That reminded him, “I’ll finish up with this. Go put all his fiji water into my bag.” Astrid saluted him and ran off. “Wait.” She stopped and looked at him. “Steal all the remotes you can find.”
“How is he not awake?,” asked Astrid as they ripped the fabric of his seating from the stool.
He shrugged. “Don’t question it.” He shoved the bundle of cloth into her arms. “Glue this above the pink. I’ll handle the frames.”
“Say the magic word,” she sang.
“Please?”
“No. Lesbian. Come on, I thought you knew me better than that.”
Kit laughed quietly. “Can you lesbian glue this above the pink?”
She grinned at Kit. “It would be my pleasure.”

Great ice cream parlours around the world
Wherever you are in the world, ice cream is the quintessential summer treat. Whether you’re cycling in Copenhagen or temple-touring in Tokyo, exploring famous streets or keeping off the beaten track, we’ve scooped up a selection of fantastic parlours offering you respite from a sweltering day. All you’ve left to do is answer the all-important question: what’s your flavour?
Ice cream sandwiches at Ruby Violet, London. Image courtesy of Danielle Wood/Ruby Violet
Ruby Violet, London
We love the flavours at this quaint, blue-tiled London hideout, where extraordinary flavours are presented in an array of forms – from milkshakes and affogato to sofa floats and the Meringue Muddle, comprising two scoops with meringue bathed in hot salted caramel or chocolate sauce. If none of these will tide you over, you can also pick from a tantalising selection of cocktails, tea, coffee and hot chocolate, or indulge even further with an ice cream afternoon tea, ice cream cake or elegant bombe. The parlour was brought to life by Julie Fisher – who’s so good at crafting the creamy stuff, she’s even published her own recipe book, Ruby Violet’s Ice Cream Dreams.
Address: 118 Fortess Rd, London NW5 2HL
Le Bac à Glaces, Paris
All journeys to Paris should begin and end with a taste of its sweetest snacks: for the best artisanal ice cream try the chic and sophisticated Bac à Glaces, which makes its own creamy delights using natural produce and fresh fruit. Some stunning French flavours are just a scoop away: choose from chestnut, coffee, nougat, salted caramel, white cheese, speculoos and more, or opt for a selection of refreshing sorbets ranging from pink grapefruit to passionfruit.
Address: 109 Rue du Bac, 75007 Paris, France

OddFellows Ice Cream Co., New York City
On your next trip to Brooklyn, New York City, make a stop at OddFellows Ice Cream Co. where the ice cream is pasteurised and made from scratch to guarantee a rich and flavourful snack. A bright vintage-inspired parlour featuring red-and-white striped interiors, it offers a different array of flavours each day – standouts include buttermilk apple, matcha passionfruit, pumpkin cheesecake, roasted pear and caramel walnut, and black olive coffee with blueberry compote.
Address: 175 Kent Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249, USA
OLUFs, Copenhagen
About as colourful as Copenhagen’s architecture, the ice cream bars over at OLUFs in Osterbro are treats to both the eyes and tongue. Each one is a work of art in its own right: whether chocolate-dipped, pistachio-flecked or coconut-covered, the home-made Italian gelatos and sorbets are smothered and sprinkled to perfection – they’re so pretty, they’re the kind of snack you’ll want to be seen eating as you amble down the city’s stylish streets.
Address: Olufsvej 6, 2100 København, Denmark
Popbar, Jakarta
While we’re on the subject of popsicles, another venue to try is the amazing Popbar, which has made the rounds in the United States and proves a refreshing option to beat the heat with in Jakarta. You can customise a selection of pretty pastel popGelatos and popSorbettos with hundreds of toppings. Some eye-poppingly fruity flavours here include guava, papaya, watermelon, kiwi, mandarin and banana.
Address: Jl. Letjen S. Parman Kav. 28, Central Park Lt. L No. 157, RT.12/RW.6, Tj. Duren Sel., Grogol petamburan, Kota Jakarta Barat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 11470, Indonesia

Salt & Straw, Portland
Pear and blue cheese, strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper, chocolate gooey brownie, and honey lavender are just some of the unique combinations that can be found at Salt & Straw’s Portland joint, which brings creativity and refinement to the table with frosty flair. Teamed with a rustic interior, where wooden floors and produce-lined furnishings glow in the sun, this little spot is perfect for whiling a post-lunch afternoon away.
Address: 838 NW 23rd Ave, Portland, OR 97210, USA
Glaslyn Ices, Beddgelert
Far removed from bustling big cities, this little Welsh parlour comes as quite a surprise, with award-winning ice cream that’s irresistibly thick and served on a tasty waffle cone. You’ll find it in the picturesque village of Beddgelert, set in the gorgeous Snowdonia area of Gwynedd. Pick up a crème caramel, white chocolate or butterscotch and pecan snack, to savour on a leisurely stroll along the river.
Address: Beddgelert, Caernarfon, Gwynedd County LL55 4YB
Rocambolesc, Barcelona
Located in Barcelona, this little treasure of a gelateria is a dream come true for every kid at heart. Imagined by Jordi Roca of El Celler de Can Roca fame, its cute interior makes for an upscale Roald Dahl-esque experience – think giant candy-striped pipes, bicycle wheels and colourful illustrations straight out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We haven’t even mentioned the best part: uniquely-shaped popsicles and freshly-churned, 100% natural ice cream, popped onto a long waffle cone and decorated with many a great topping. On less sunny days, try the panet – lush ice cream and toppings wedged between two brioche halves.
Address: La Rambla, 51-59, 08002 Barcelona, Spain

Address: level g/80 Pyrmont St, Pyrmont NSW 2009, Australia
Giolitti, Rome
Giolitti is one for all serious foodies to top their ice cream bucket list with: founded in 1890, this popular parlour is the oldest in Rome and constantly buzzes with eager crowds. Try a rainbow of traditional and harmonious flavours, each perfected by years of experience and served in generous portions. Follow a cone up with a delectable ice cream biscuit, cake or truffle, or opt for the most indulgent Mont Blanc dessert.

16 Talented Artisans That Deserve Your Undivided Attention
16 Talented Artisans That Deserve Your Undivided Attention
TDF Design Awards
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
Lucy Tolan pieces. Photography – Shelley Horan. Art Direction and Styling – Both.
Alison Frith ceramics plinth. Photo – Tania Bahr-Vollrath.
Lucy Tolan, Seams
The objective of Seams by ceramicist Lucy Tolan was to investigate technique and form through the construction and deconstruction of the vessel. The body of work explores the textile qualities of clay and convergence of materials through accentuated joins – seams.
See our feature on Lucy’s practice here.
Alison Frith, Ceramic Plinth
Inspired by the need for function yet the desire for considered design, Alison Frith created the Ceramic Plinth. Made entirely by hand, each plinth is wheel thrown, with composite pieces formed and joined together.
Precise attention was paid to weight and form to ensure the final piece could serves as a functional side table or a standalone sculptural object.
Georgina Proud ceramics. Photo – Georgina Proud.
Eun Ceramics. Right photo – Isabella King. Left photo – Jess Brohier.
Georgina Proud, Flotsam//Jetsam
Flotsam//Jetsam is a collection of clay vessels featuring embedded materials to create unique and distinct surfaces. In making the collection, ceramic artist Georgina Proud experimented with materials found on beaches throughout Victoria such as pebbles and sea glass, and investigated how these react to the ceramic process.
Eun Ceramics, Curved
Eun Ceramics’ Curved collective is an observation on societal norms. Irregular curves meeting the narrow neck opening, representing our individuality being suppressed or shaped to fit a status quo.
The unique style of ceramicist Jess Choi means each angle carries a different form and texture, creating new perspectives in the unusual clay bodies.
See our feature on Jess’ practice here.
Oh Hey Grace ceramics. Photo – Jess Brohier.
Oh Hey Grace, A Place To Call Home
A Place to Call Home is a collection of sculptures made from mid-fire glazed ceramics using a combination of sculpting, hand-building and wheel throwing by ceramicist Grace Brown. Sculpted utopian cityscapes and dwellings were developed in response to the often dystopian reality outside, particularly during 2020-21.
See our feature on Oh Hey Grace here.
Hamish Munro rings. Photo – Peter Ryle.
Left: Bioregional Rings by Kyoko Hahimoto. Photo – Kyoko Hashimoto. Right: Bioplastic Vessels by Jessie French. Photo – Pier Carthew. Art Director – Thalia Economo.
Hamish Munro, The Joan Series
The Joan Series by jeweller Hamish Munro consists of interchangeable, genderless rings designed around the precise geometry and angled position of individual stones. Pieces explore the removal of surface area within the ring, instead ‘subtracting’ from the classic form of a band and creating a dynamism between stones.
This collection represents a deviation and expansion on Hamish’s previous jewellery pieces as he broadens his experience with technique, process and familiarity with stone.
See our feature on Hamish’s practice here.
Kyoko Hashimoto, Bioregional Rings
This series of rings by Kyoko Hashimoto presents materials that can be found and processed locally in Sydney Basin bioregion. Raw materials include Hawkesbury sandstone conglomerated in the earth 250 million years ago, and coal from the Illawarra Coal Measures that formed in geological strata several kilometres deep below the sandstone.
The body of work intends to define a region by its environment and earthly yield rather than the borders imposed by humankind.
Other Matter, Algae Bioplastic Vessels
Tempering aesthetic beauty with future thinking, Other Matter has generated a collection of bioplastic tableware made using algae polymers and pigments. These aesthetically striking pieces reminiscent of glass are recyclable, biodegradable, and can be composted in a home system.
Other Matter is the studio founded by artist Jessie French. Her solo practice explores speculative futures and material boundaries through work with algae-based bioplastics. Her research into seaweed supply chains has taken her from artist residencies in Morocco to group shows in New York City.
See our feature on Jessie’s practice here.
Left: Liam Fleming glass. Photo – Josephine Briginshaw. Right: Jenna M Lee works. Photo – Henry Trumble.
Liam Fleming, Post-Production
Glassworker Liam Fleming’s practice combines mould-blowing and cold lamination. In Post-Production, he subjects objects to a rough surface treatment, fusing them at high temperatures in a kiln, then joining them in a manner at odds with the precision of cold lamination. The glass slumps and warps, collapsing under its weight and expanding with pressure.
The body of work was created as part of ‘Preliminary Strcutures’, a group show of seven designers curated for Melbourne Design Week 2021. The makers represented contemporary glass and ceramic work, displaying non-traditional and interpretive structures for their media.
Jenna M Lee, Body Language
Jenna M Lee is an artist and graphic designer living in Melbourne, whose highly symbolic work seeks to reclaim agency over the historic representation of Aboriginal people in Australia.
Using pages from the colonial text ‘Aboriginal Words and Place Names’, the artist created three dilly bags embellished with red silk thread and glass beads. The paper-based pieces in the Body Language series explore the relationships between cultural objects and adornments as an extension of the body; the body itself as an extension of Country and language; and Country, language and body as elemental factors of connection and healing.
Left: Sarah Rayner + Sophie Carnell works. Photo – Greg Piper. Right: Jan Vogelpoel ceramics. Photo – Jan Vogelpoel.
Sarah Rayner + Sophie Carnell, Florilegium
Porcelain artist Sarah Rayner and silversmith Sophie Carnell collaborated to create 42 small handcrafted sculptural works inspired by the complexity and richness of native flora. The duo’s chosen materials of porcelain and silver have been morphed from inert matter into 3D works.
Initially driven by a passion for the natural environment and the process of collection, the pieces en masse represent the poetry of flowers. The series is tactile, sensual and compelling.
Jan Vogelpoel Ceramics, Future Curve, Space Cadet and Curve
These three ceramic pieces are inspired by the curves of the Glebe House designed by Chenchow Little, and the Taal monument designed by Jan van Wijk. Restrained forms allow the form, curves and clay to work their magic without overworking or overthinking the design or the process.
Jan Vogelpoel‘s forms are undulating, organic and honest.
See our feature on Jan’s practice here.
Left: Photo – Polly Wright. Right: Photo – Ferro Forma Studio.
Erin.k jewellery + Koorie Tales, Source of Life + Essence at Dusk
Jewellery label erin.k jewellery created two collections featuring artist Holly McLennan-Brown of Koorie Tales’ artwork. Pieces convey elements of Holly’s Yorta Yorta culture, with the intent of making Indigenous art more accessible.
5% of sales from pieces in the collection are donated to Koorie Heritage Trust.
Alison Jackson & Dan Lorrimer, Flow Form Vases
Flow Form Vases by Alison Jackson and Dan Lorrimer (now Ferro Forma studio) blend small-scale metalsmithing production techniques with one-of-a-kind artwork processes to create a series of unique tableware objects. Complex hydraulic pressing tools allow the initial tubular form (in either brass or stainless steel) to be pressed repeatedly along its length, each time changing the surface.
Once formed, a multi-step finishing sequence layers the surface of each piece with a unique patina.
Left: Artist Alycia Marrday with her work. Photo – Marrawuddi Arts & Culture. Right: Erraarnta (red-tailed black cockatoo) by Rona Rubuntja of the Hermannsburg Potters. Photo – Hermannsburg Potters.
Alycia Marrday of Marrawuddi Arts & Culture, Baladjdji (Backpack)
Artist Alycia Marrday independently created this woven backpack with the support of community arts centre Marrawuddi Arts & Culture. Combining both ancient and traditional methods, the large and bright piece is an example of phenomenal weaving mastery. All materials are natural including Kunngobarn (pandanus) and Kala (natural dye) collected on Country.
Alycia says: ‘Maybe my kids give me idea, Anita. My kids really love the backpacks weavings. I look at the backpacks my kids have and try weave same pockets. I just used it from my own mind, I get the kala (colour) from my partner’s homeland.’
Rona Rubuntja of Hermannsburg Potters, Selected Works
Rona Rubuntja of the Hermannsburg Potters’ joyous style is distinctive, humorous and imaginative. Rona is a deaf and non-verbal person, and uses the medium of pottery to tell stories of her life. Each of these works emanate joy while depicting contemporary life in Ntaria (Hermannsburg community) and speaking to Western Aranda values.
The Hermannsburg Potters are an artist collective established in 1992 and has grown to nearly 20 artists. The artists paint stories of the surrounding Country, community, animals and memories of family onto the surface of their hand-built terracotta pots, topping each piece with a figurative sculpture. The works are vibrant, cheeky, purposeful and original, displaying a deep knowledge of Country, and a playful, vivid view of contemporary desert life.

alethiology: part one
bang chan and hades frost: the sleights
armed with cards, ice, and secrets, chan has to question the motives and heart of his partner, hades, as they begin their heist in her hometown of london.
Sydney, Australia-Monday, 6pm
Bang Chan was a hustler. He knew it. He was seventeen; he needed to survive in a world of deception. Chan ran away from an orphanage at six years old. It was a story that he never wanted to relive under any pretense.
The boy fell in love with magic around that age. He would watch magicians amaze crowds of people, sometimes to earn cash, others to share their love of the art. And so, with no sense of formal training, Chan started to train himself through sight. He saw one trick from various angles, mimicking the movements diligently. Magicians taught him a lesson: deceive or be deceived.
A few months later, Chan managed to steal a deck of cards from a street magician's pocket. He remembered the man's appearance—a full white-tie suit, complete with a smirk and a briefcase. And, as Chan knew, any magician kept more decks on their physical body than they would like to admit. So, his fingers snuck into the pocket, grabbing out a pair of playing cards, regardless. When he returned to his hiding spot under the bridge, he found that they were a pair of black Joe Doucet Minim cards.
On Monday, Chan began his show at Sydney Square. Immediately, an audience began to circle him to see the trick. "So, I'm going to need a volunteer. Anyone care to assist me?" he said, scanning the girls, choosing a girl with blond hair and hazel eyes.
"So pick a card out of the deck. I shuffled this earlier today, but I can reshuffle if you want," the teenager instructed. Picking a card, she showed everyone else but him, returning the card. Chan smirked as he started to mix them cards around, fanning them out for everyone to see. Along the way, he took note of her pink bedazzled clutch; she was probably going to the club.
"Do you see your card in this deck, Miss Charlotte Williams?" he questioned.
"How do you know my name? I never told you."
"You didn't need to. You look like a Charlotte Williams. You look beautiful," he deflected, "Anyways, is your card in this deck?"
"No, it's not." He rifled through the cards for the last time, and he asked, "Could you do me a favor, and go through your wallet, Charlotte?" Charlotte did as he asked, finding that there was a card in her bedazzled clutch. The Seven of Spades.
"That's my card," she said in bewilderment, before smiling in amazement.
Again, as everyone left him, they handed a variety of bills to Chan, who smiled as he returned to his shack and began to count his earnings—and what he snagged from the Charlotte Williams's clutch; he stopped when he felt something in his jacket sleeve. He stared at it in curiosity, and then subsequently groaned.
It was a tarot card. With a gold leaf design, Chan was automatically suspicious. He proceeded to peel it off, trying to obtain a clue as to who sent him the card. After removing all the gold leaf, he found an address where the border used to be. Chan flipped the card over, enjoying the aesthetic of the card.
With a dark and enigmatic motif, the picture resonated with Chan peculiarly.
XIII: Death
London, England-Sunday, 7pm
Hades Frost often found herself wondering what she was meant to be doing in life. The product of a science experiment gone wrong, Hades was never her first name, if at all. She was born Zella (despite the masculinity) Frost. Following the events (that she has almost no recollection of) that happened, she changed her name to the antonym of her birth name.
What she did learn was that she could manipulate water, snow, and ice. Hades learned that she needed to be trained elsewhere, wherever elsewhere could be; elsewhere was, in reality, a tarot shop.
The tarot shop was ancient. Located in the darker end of Westminster, the store sold cards, books, crystals, and a myriad of magical objects. A lady with graying hair and blue eyes ran the shop, and she took Hades under her wing, teaching her how to control her magic. In turn, Hades would care for the building after her death.
People knew that Hades was able to create water, ice, and snow. They didn't know that she was stealing their wallets and—subsequently—their bank accounts. She went into upper-class parties and stole their jewelry. The shop could only provide so much income, so it was what she needed to do to keep the electricity and water running.
That Sunday evening, Hades stood in front of Big Ben, shuffling a deck of Linestrider tarot cards. The crowd thickened, providing her with many wallets as she could want.
"So, tonight," she started, "I'm going to perform a magic trick that is virtually impossible. I'm going to create ice from thin air. Now, can you guys check my jacket and my hands to make sure they're empty?" Hades extended her arms as she allowed a bystander to check her, confirming that they were empty.
Hades performed a hand-tutting style trick (which was mainly for show, nothing more), the bottoms of her palm twisting to wrap her hands around her wrists. Pulling them apart, she revealed a chunk of ice.
"Alright, sir, can you touch this piece of ice for me?" He complied with her request, touching the ice.
"It's real," he confirmed, "Wait a minute. There's something inside."
"Really?" Hades waved her hand over, revealing a black leather wallet. It fell gently into the palm of her hand. As everyone started to applaud, and the crowd faded (she never really accepted money, unless she was stealing it). The girl remembered to return the wallet to its owner; she removed the cash.
When she returned home, Hades sat at her work desk, working on a new deck of tarot cards. She noticed a card that seemed out of place.
It could've passed off as one of the cards in her larger-sized tarot deck. With its vintage pattern on the back, Hades knew she would have deciphered it. She grabbed the gold leaf and peeled it off, revealing an address.
"Knew it, she whispered. She flipped it towards the front, a smirk playing on her lips. The picture was vastly different than the original deck. Where Hades' photos showed a story, the stray card stuck out like a sore thumb. The pictures had various neutral hues. Hades' expression turned from smug to curious as she looked at the card.
XVIII: The Moon
Seoul, South Korea-Friday, 12pm
Hades was the first one at the address. She wore a leather jacket, cropped sweater, high waisted shorts, and thigh-high boots. Her lips were a dark purple, and her eyeshadow was purple, making her grey eyes stand out.
Chan arrived next. He wore an unusual black-gradient turtleneck, ripped skinny jeans, sneakers, and black leather jacket with silver embellishments. He left his blue-silver hair tousled; it was slightly wavy when left untouched.
He noted that they looked very similar to each other. They could walk down the street, and if anyone asked, they would say they were siblings. The person would probably note that they would look very much alike and continued on their way.
"What's your card?" Chan broke the silence.
"Pardon?" she asked.
"Your card? You know, the one that led you here?"
"Oh." Her remark was brief, but Chan already knew that she wasn't from here. He handed her his tarot card.
"I'm Death. What is that supposed to mean?" Hades looked at the card, before briefly explaining.
"No. You're not going to die. You have to close a door to your past and open a new one. It's also a time for transitioning. You're going to transform into something different, someone different. Anything that's screaming change, even if it's sudden, you should take it as a positive thing.
"However, you seem to have a hard time letting go of the past. You resist change. You feel like you're in this limbo, and you're at crossroads. Don't resist it." He was surprised; she knew a lot about him.
"You're not from here, are you?" Chan asked.
"Obviously. I took a thirteen-hour flight to get here," Hades deadpanned.
"Where have you been staying at?"
"A hotel in Seoul." The boy extended his hand.
"I'm Chan. Bang Chan, but some people call me Chris." The girl stared at his outstretched hand, grasping firmly with her own, and shaking it.
"Hades Frost."
They remained silent after their conversation, both shuffling their decks of cards. Hades would greet everyone who came up, and when everyone did, they seemed perplexed. They didn't know what their cards meant, and Hades sighed loudly.
"Please don't tell me I'm the only one that can read tarot cards," she mumbled, her silver-white waves bouncing with every shake of her head. When nobody responded, she groaned.
"Alright. Get in a line." Eagerly, the kids stepped in a line, and Hades interpreted every card for her fellow magicians. However, she never disclosed any more information about herself other than her name.
Seoul, South Korea-Friday, 2pm
Chan and Hades were the first to enter the apartment. Hades wondered why they didn't have an office. She plopped herself on a beanbag chair, beaming with joy. "This feels nice," she commented. Chan wasn't sure if her smile was intentionally cold, but it was. He proceeded to sit on a swivel chair.
Hades stared at him, her sterling grey eyes scrutinizing through his, almost as if she hated him. They pierced into his soul, and he felt violated at her cold glower. Chan tried to glare back, but he couldn't. It felt as if she had no emotion.
Chan was charmingly handsome, and he was innocent. He found sublimity in things like friends and family. His smile brightened up a room. He seemed relatively harmless, given he couldn't glare at her properly.
Stop, Hades. He's not like you. The girl chastised herself as she stared around the dingy apartment. She settled her eyes on a button on the wall. As she stood, Chan grabbed her wrist, before pulling back and nearly screaming. Hades turned to see the skin on his hand peeling and horrendously red. Not that she cared because she rammed her hand into the button, anyway.
The table began to illuminate, splitting to reveal three people. "I don't know if you guys are trying to be dramatic, but it doesn't work," she deadpanned.
"That was awesome," Chan marveled. Hades stared at him.
"You're insane," Hades retorted.
"Thank you for the compliment, but no. Hades' right. We wanted to be dramatic," said one of the males that wore a leather jacket and ripped jeans. He also had grey hair.
"Forgive BamBam," the other male said, "I'm Mark Tuan. And, I need your help."
And so, he began his tale. How a man named Park Jinyoung screwed him and his crew (they were missing one member, apparently) over, and now they want revenge. Hence, why they decided to recruit eighteen younger versions of Houdini.
"So let me get this straight: you want eighteen people entering a party to obtain maximum security level cards for certain international banks. Then, we perform a magic trick to transfer heavy gold bars from said banks into our houses? Explain to me the logic that requires you to recruit ragtag magicians," Hades concluded.
"You're smart, Hades. I think you can figure it out," one of the females said. Her name was Nayeon; Hades immediately took a dislike to her.
"Oh, I know. Park Jinyoung has seen all your faces, so you guys are rendered useless. Therefore, you need unfamiliar faces, preferably unrecognizable ones."
"So, why do you need magicians?" Chan pressed on, "Because we know how to scam people?" When they earned no response, they knew they were right.
"Fine, we'll do it. But, we want you to spare no expense on our attire, plus fifty percent of our earnings to the eighteen of us," Hades proposed.
"You have our word," Mark said, handing her a black card. She studied it like a jeweler with their diamonds. "We'll be taking you guys to New York. You'll meet our final member there. Enjoy yourselves."
When the pair left the apartment through the fire escape, they stared at the card, then the window.
"You burned my hand," Chan remarked.
"And?" Hades responded, nonchalant about the situation.
"Do you not have a soul?" He burned his eyes through hers, but still, it couldn't have hurt a fly.
"No." Like her answer, Hades' voice was as biting as the cold and as sharp as an icicle. She walked away from him, and Chan watched her do so, his thoughts running wild.
New York, United States-Sunday,8am
"So, what exactly is this place?" Hades heard one of the girls, Kris, asked as she stared at the building in front of her. They had just arrived from Seoul to New York on BamBam's private jet, complete with luxuries that they had abused relentlessly.
"Saks Fifth Avenue. A giant shopping mall for luxury brands," Val, another girl, answered. The group just gazed, not knowing where to start.
"Well, let's go!" Changbin, Kris' partner, exclaimed, rallying everyone into one of the stores. Chan and Hades stayed behind. And then, it was just Chan.
From his view, he could his assigned partner in a light pink poncho cape, ripped jeans, and white ankle boots. Her hair was unruly—when was it not—naturally tousled. She looked cold, both figuratively and literally.
Snap out of it, Chan. Remember? She doesn't have a soul. Chan internally yelled. He was trying to refrain from snapping at her. So, he went inside the mall, finding that they were all in some store that sold suits and dresses.
Hades, Kris, and Val were browsing for dresses, but Hades ushered them into the dressing rooms, telling them she was still trying to find her dress. Chan edged closer to the girl, hoping to find a way for her to liven up, so he touched her shoulders. As he was hoping for a reaction, he was disappointed, but he shouldn't have been surprised.
Instead of jolting, or even yelping in shock, Hades had virtually no reaction. She didn't even acknowledge his presence—he was a shadow, a ghost. He watched her movement as she examined the dresses. Chan participated, going through the different dresses.
"Can I help with anything?" a perky voice asked. Hades turned around, her eyes narrowing into angry slits.
"Zella, it's—"
"It's Hades, now, Venus." Chan realized that her detached way of speech wasn't just towards him; it was towards everyone.
"Look, I'm sorry about—"
"About what?" Hades turned to face the other girl, "Dragging me into your mess? Or is it about the fact you just let them torture me, then constantly erase my memories about it, and allow it to go in one giant circle?" Silence ensued. By now, everyone turned to stare at the two arguing women.
"I thought you told the police that you remember nothing," Venus reasoned.
"I remember almost nothing. I recall you doing nothing to help us, to help me. Your twin sister. What kind of person are you?"
"How did—"
"Did I remember?" Hades answered, "They wouldn't stop inducing amnesia, so we had to find methods. Usually, painful ones"— Hades extended her arms from her poncho to reveal her arms full of cuts—"They could remove the blood, but they couldn't remove the scar."
"So, no, sister. Unless you can go back in time and reverse six gruesome years of my and my friends' lives, you can't help."
As Hades walked away, she tossed Chan Mark's credit card on her way to the door. Chan stared at her fading figure and stared at Venus.
If Hades was the cold and biting winter frost, then Venus was the warm and radiating summer. Her hair was long and brown, and her eyes were guilt-ridden. In a way, Chan expected himself to like Venus more than Hades, but he surprised himself when he began to follow the short-haired girl to her location.
He found her in a store perpendicular to the store she just left. Hades browsed through the dresses, trying to find something that suited her. Chan was appalled that she acted as if nothing just happened; Hades had just yelled at her sister, then walked away to leave her in tears, and as if she did nothing wrong.
"Hades," he said, but she wasn't listening. Trying to test his luck, Chan touched her wrist once more, screaming in pain again.
"It's fun," Hades said, "Watching you not learn from your lesson and getting your hand burned again."
"You enjoy watching me suffer?"
"I do." A giggle escaped her lips.
"You truly are soulless," the boy remarked.
"I know."
New York, United States-Sunday, 7pm
Hades stood in the shower, allowing the water to soak her. She began thinking about everything that led up to herself. Her thoughts organized themselves into a maze, often leading to a feeling of confusion and loneliness, despite the otherwise front.
She relived the years of the crucifixion that she had endured. All she had known was white walls and poisoned food and tormenting injections. Her supposed parents would experiment on her with different torture tactics, and her twin sister did nothing to assist her. Zella wouldn't have remembered anything, but she found ways to—she had stolen a knife from the dinner table, stowing it under her bed. Every night, before she would get gassed, she cut a mark on her wrist. When she got dangerously close to the bone, she started a new one.
When the authorities arrested her parents and their affiliates, Zella and the other children were six; they were emaciated, none of them weighing over twenty pounds. Zella Frost was dead, and Hades Railynne Frost rose from its ashes.
Hades sighed, stepping out of the shower, and beginning to dry her hair. She slipped into her dress and started working on her makeup. Adjusting some sections of her hair, she stared at herself in the mirror. She looked perfect.
Strutting out of the bathroom, she placed her shoes on, hearing the knock on the door. Hades opened the door, revealing Chan in a traditional black suit. His diagonally-striped tie was tied in an Eldredge Knot. If she didn't know any better, he could've passed off as a businessman, a handsome one at that.
"Wow," Chan said, studying her from head to toe, "You look...stunning."
The dress fit Hades perfectly, highlighting her legs and waist. With a high neck collar, long lace sleeves, and lace throughout, the dress was a midnight black, and it was also short, stopping at Hades' thighs. Paired with her ankle-high boot heels, dark makeup, and tousled hair, it created the perfect combination of elegance and fear.
"You don't look too bad yourself," she remarked in turn. Chan seemed surprised with her. "Is that a problem?"
"No," Chan objected, shaking his head profusely, "It's just...you don't normally compliment people, if at all."
The atmosphere was quiet. Neither person made a move. Awkwardly, the boy in the suit rustled through his pocket, revealing a ring. Hades knew that it was a Tiffany and Co. ring just by its trademark blue box and white ribbon.
Opening the velvet box inside, Chan revealed the iconic Tiffany ring, with a marquise diamond center and two bands—a traditional and one encrusted with diamonds. Hades marveled at the beauty of the ring, before remembering the cost of a ring this exquisite.
"We're supposed to be an engaged couple," Chan explained, his cheeks flushing, "I wasn't sure about the ring, but Mark insisted I buy it. Cost like forty grand."
"It's fine." It wasn't fine. He slid the ring onto her finger, admiring how it reflected against the light.
"Shall we go?" Chan extended his elbow to her, allowing Hades to link her arm with his.
"Am I going to get another burn?"
"We'll see."
New York, United States-Wednesday, 8pm
The party was lavish, seeing as the host spared no expense for it. Park Jinyoung's mansion consisted of gold furnishing and marble tiles. "Card?" asked one of the security guards. Chan showed him the card, and they were inside. Going up the elevator, Hades kept her stony expression. "Nervous?" Chan asked her. "What is being nervous?" she returned, her eyes instinctively fluttering shut. "Don't tell me you don't feel, either," he lamented. "I feel minimal emotions, Chan. My brain perceives complex emotions differently," she explained, her eyes flickering gently. When the door opened, a vibrant atmosphere greeted them. Chan eyed everyone. Where all the other ladies donned long ball gowns, Hades stood out to the crowd, despite the color of her dress. The girl grabbed a glass of champagne from one of the waiters. Taking a sip, she hummed, "Sparkling Prosecco." "Ah. I wouldn't have expected anyone to figure it out so easily." The pair turned to see the host of the party. Park Jinyoung. "I'm Park Jinyoung." "I'm Bang Chan." The two men shook hands. Jinyoung turned to the smaller girl. "This is my fiancee, Hades Frost." "Pleasure," she commented, shaking his hand. After releasing her hand, Park Jinyoung found a burn mark on his own. "Strange," he remarked. "That's unusual," Hades said. "If you'll excuse us," Chan cordially concluded, escorting the girl to the dance floor. A tango song was being played by the orchestra, probably from a good school like Berklee College, or even Juilliard, or maybe both. "I don't dance," the girl said, noting how they were the only one on the ballroom floor. It attracted more attention towards Hades, but she didn't mind. After all, she came with one job to do. Chan led them along, and Hades found her footing. Chan seemed to know how to tango, and he moved his foot underneath where her right foot would step from doing her figure eight, allowing her to jump into the air slightly. Hades took advantage of this, hooking her legs against his waist. "I thought you said you couldn't dance," Chan started the banter. "I don't dance, not that I can't," she countered, kicking her leg up effortlessly. When the song ended, both Chan and Hades were slightly out of breath, the proximity between them only centimeters apart. He held her close to him, keeping watchful eyes on the men staring at her. "Excuse me?" Chan and Hades locked eyes with a man. The man in the picture—black hair, a pointed nose, and fair skin. "Might I borrow your lady for a moment. Just one dance?" Hades turned to Chan, her usual vacant eyes turning into an impish doe-eye stare. The boy internally groaned. For someone who didn't comprehend emotions, she knew what she was doing. "Alright." He returned to stare at their victim. "I expect her back in one piece," he warned with a dangerous tone to his voice. "You have my word." The man took Hades back onto the floor, and Chan watched every minuscule detail. He chuckled when he saw her feign falling on top of the other man, using the opportunity to seize the card from his pocket. Palming the card in her hand, she lightly tossed it to Chan. Snatching it, he placed it in the pocket in his blazer. He smiled, watching the man—his name was Matthew Rossi—attempt to get her some champagne. She refused, making up a haphazard excuse for Chan to rescue her. Not that she legitimately needed saving. "Is everything alright here?" he intervened. Hades, continuing her act, allowed Chan to hold her steady as he took her back to their spot. "I thought you said you didn't understand complex emotions," Chan teased. "It's called acting, Aussie Boy. Try it some time." "And, you're back."
London, England-Friday, 8pm
"Welcome to Black Diamond," Hades stated, opening the door to her shop. "It's not much," she told Chan as she turned on the light, "But, it's home."
"I like it," Chan complimented, looking at the different amount of books Hades procured. He stared at the decks of tarot cards on display. "Where do you get these?" he asked.
"I made them," was her response.
"You made them?" Hades nodded, going up a set of stairs, Chan in tow.
"This is your bed. There's a bathroom down and towards your right." Swiftly, she left the room, gently shutting the door.
The room had white walls and rustic setting. The wood tables provided a dark contrast to the bright walls. He even saw bouquets of flowers, kept fresh due to Hades' cryokinetic skills. They still retained their fragrance.
Chan stepped outside the room, settling for a shower. Along the way, he heard a voice singing on the radio. He'd ask her about it later, starting the shower.
He thought about Hades. She was an enigmatic soul, with a detachment to the world, but also everyone around her. He wondered if she could open up to others. Perhaps she repressed a lot of it during her time in torture. Or maybe she wasn't keen on revealing personal thoughts and feelings.
When he finished, he knocked on her door, hearing her hum. Stepping inside, he found her working with a brush to paint on cardstock. Chan took a seat next to her, saying a brief, "Hi." Hades didn't respond; she engrossed herself in her work.
"I have a question," he continued. No response. He persisted.
"Can you give me a tarot reading?" No response.
"Please?" No response.
"Hades Whatever-Your-Middle-Name-Is Frost," Chan called. She looked up.
"Railynne."
"Pardon?" he asked.
"Railynne. It's my middle name." Chan sighed.
"Hades Railynne Frost, can you please give me a tarot reading?" he asked, this time in a cute voice. Hades released a low, brusque rumble.
"Fine." Walking down the stairs, she led them to a back door, allowing him in first. Following a series of finger-tutting, she conjured up a deck of tarot cards using water. A few more moves and the cards shuffled themselves. With another wave of her hand, the cards stopped, flourishing themselves on the table.
"Pick six." Chan chose them, and she laid them out, moving the cards aside with a flick of her wrist. Flipping over the first card, Hades began to explain.
"Temperance is how you view yourself. You want balance in your life. Calm control will help you get back in order." She flipped the second card.
"What you want most right now is Justice. A fair and right outcome no matter what. You want things to go in your favor, no matter what.
"The third card represents your fears. The High Priestess. But, since you're a boy, it means a girl in your life is a bad influence in your life. I wonder who that might be." It was obviously Hades.
"The Lovers. Interesting. What you have going for you is the fact that new commitment and love is coming to come in your life. Expect a surprise.
"However, The Wheel of Fortune is going against you. It's an omen for bad luck. So, you need to utilize your intuition to help you move along.
"And, we come to the last card: Death. How fitting"—she wore a wry smile—"Anyways, this is the likely outcome. Transformation, growth. But, I don't need to explain that to you, do I?"
Chan watched as Hades moved her fingers to put the cards back to the deck and she returned upstairs to her room.
"Damn," he grumbled to himself.
London, England-Friday, 8am
"So, what can you feel?" Chan asked Hades as they mulled over boba milk tea that he had made. It was small talk, and he genuinely was trying, but she made it impossible.
"Anger, sadness, and if I'm lucky happiness." He groaned to himself.
It worked like that with Hades. She never responded, and if she did, the answer didn't last more than a sentence. It agitated him, knowing that she wouldn't open up to him, or anyone, for that matter.
"Is it by choice?"
"Not necessarily." Silence followed suit. Hades suddenly stood up, dragging Chan with her. He felt the burn, yet he seemed immune to the pain.
"It's interesting," she remarked, leading him down the industrial streets of her hometown.
"What?" he inquired.
"How you're becoming like me around pain: numb." Chan was left speechless. How could she have the audacity to say that to him? Sadly, he couldn't argue with her—Hades was right.
"You're bold to say that." He sounded defeated.
"I suppose I have a boldness about it. However, I just speak the truth."
"How is that?" Chan continued.
"Alexithymia, diagnosed after I got out of the New Scotland Yard office and into a hospital and talked to a psychiatrist." They stopped in front of Buckingham Palace. "Give me your phone." Doing as she asked, he handed her his phone.
"Smile," she prompted, taking a picture of him. When he asked for his phone, she refused.
"You are going to see the beauty that is my hometown. No technology anything."
And so, she led him to some of her favorite places, such as the London Eye, the Palace of Westminster, the National Gallery, and St. James Park. Hades kept taking pictures of him enjoying the scenery, some prompted, but the vast majority were otherwise. Chan gleamed when he saw them.
It was when they were in front of the London Eye where Chan managed to take his phone back, capturing a shot of her staring into the horizon.
She wore a black sweater and ripped black jeans. Over it, she wore a black poncho with a tribal pattern embroidering it. Her boots were ankle-length, and her makeup complemented her attire, and her bag's tribal print suited the poncho. Hades stood out, like she always did, whether she liked it or not.
Suddenly, Chan's phone wasn't in his possession. He looked to see Hades staring at him with an impish glint in her eyes and a smirk tainting her lips, his phone encased in a water and snowflake wreath. "Not happening, sweetheart."
"Not fair," he whined.
"You sound like a child," she snorted.
"Hey! Respect your elders!"
"You're only older than me by like a week," she informed, her eyebrow raised at his antics.
"So?"
"You sound like a grandpa when you say that." Before they could continue their argument, Hades' phone rang.
"Hades Frost."
The other end passed a note of information, and she subsequently hung up the phone.
"Any news on the heist?" Chan wondered. She gave him an unreadable expression.
"The heist? It's taking place Sunday night."
And for the first time, Chan wanted to feel like Hades—numb.
London, England-Saturday, 3pm
Hades and Chan stood outside the front doors of the London Bank. "Nervous?" Chan asked, feeling a sense of deja vu with their conversation. The silver-haired girl played along with their conversation.
"What is being nervous?" This time, however, he gave her a different response.
"When you're nervous, there's this feeling in your stomach that doesn't entirely leave you. You're shaking, and you're wondering if you can do it or not."
"Sounds like something I don't want to have," she deadpanned dryly.
"I suppose; however, it can be a good thing. Like, when you feel butterflies when you talk to your crush," Chan prodded.
"Like when you talk to me," Hades supplied. Before the blue and grey-haired boy could respond, she was already making her way inside the bank.
Hades knew where she was going, walking up to the receptionists' desk without much hesitation. Just as she was about to ask to view the bank account that belonged to Matthew Rossi, a man prevented her from doing so.
"Miss Frost!" Hades turned her head, finding herself face to face with Matthew Rossi himself.
"Matthew," she reacted, a haphazard smile crossing her face. "What are you doing here?"
"The same as you," he answered dismissively, "Check my bank account."
"I see." Silence permeated the air, but it was short-lived because he mentioned a topic that people had gone about since its announcement.
"I heard that Park Jinyoung was sponsoring your magic show." She scoffed.
"I'm surprised he didn't mention it to us via messaging or email. I had to hear the news from my boss. It's been the talk of the town."
"Your boss?" Matthew asked, his inky black hair flying in front of his face.
"Mark Tuan"—the man's eyes slightly widened—"Is there a problem with that?" Hades was genuinely curious with this.
Mark had called her last night, and it turned out that Park Jinyoung was sponsoring the magic show that Mark planned for the eighteen magicians. Since they needed to get the money as soon as they could, Hades was in charge of flirting with their benefactor, mainly because she didn't feel any affection toward anyone.
"No," Matthew dismissed, "It's just some business affairs. Nothing that concerns you."
"It concerns me when I find out that my boss and my benefactor have some supposed history. You're a very poor liar."
The man sighed defeatedly. "Alright. But, if I tell you this, you have to promise you won't tell anyone else. Not to your boss, Park Jinyoung, or even your fiance."
"Of course." Lie. Chan was standing outside by the London Eye, listening in on the conversation. Hades was thankful that Matthew couldn't see her earphones, which acted as a microphone.
"So, Mark Tuan used to work for Mr. Park as an intern. When his internship was over, he took over his family's company, which was immensely corrupt, and became one of the youngest successful business magnates in South Korea.
“Now, Mr. Park didn't necessarily like that. His finest protegee became his rival. So, he managed to buy all the stocks that belonged to Mark's company, ruining it. They control the majority of popular opinion now."
Hades' reaction was unexpected if she bothered having one at all. Matthew was shocked at her lack of expression. "You know, I would've expected a beautiful girl like you to be surprised." She could ear Chan's scoff from her earphones.
"Surprised? That's not in her vocabulary," he muttered.
"Hush," she hummed softly, averting her attention back to Matthew Rossi.
"Anyways, would you like to look at the vault?" he offered. Hades nodded.
Following a brief conversation with the clerk, they went through a series of corridors; Hades utilized the time to memorize the directions to get into the said vault. Matthew spared no expense to flirt with her.
The first thing Hades realized was that the vault was empty. She raised an eyebrow at Matthew, utterly unimpressed. "It's empty," she deadpanned.
"I know. There's a shipment coming in tonight at eight. Bars of gold from Switzerland." Matthew Rossi appeared content with this shipment. All the more reason to take it.
"Really?" Hades genuinely smiled, and Matthew found himself unaware of the malevolence in her smile, and blissfully unaware that he spoke too much.
London, England-Saturday, 12pm
"So, you're telling me that there's a shipment coming to London from Switzerland?" Chan asked as Hades continued painting her set of tarot cards with a glossy finish. She entrusted Chan with running the store (sans the tarot reading: that was Hades' job only).
"Yeah, and the vault was empty," she responded, pouring the gloss onto a tray.
"So, I went and searched the list of deliveries coming from Switzerland to England," Chan revealed, handing her the brief list of shipments for the week. Hades' icy silver eyes flickered through the compilation.
"So, the question is, how the hell did you obtain this?"
"Called Carlota, and she managed to get the list through speaking Spanish."
"Isn't she in Argentina?" Hades inquired.
"Yeah." Suddenly, she grinned at the sight of the familiar name and location.
"For a business magnate"—the girl gestured to the paper—"there's an awful lack of security" Chan smirked in response.
"I'll come up with a plan, and we can figure it out," the boy suggested. The girl nodded, resuming her work with the cards, playing piano music to help her focus.
Inversely, Chan stepped outside to see someone he hadn't expected to see in a while. "Venus," he addressed curtly.
"Chan," she blew a sigh of relief, "Is Hades here?"
"Yeah, but I doubt she would want to see you," he retaliated, his tone turning defensive for the silver-haired girl.
"Alright," Venus sounded defeated, but she remained in the shop. Chan heard thumping to reveal Hades herself. Without much hesitation, she gestured to the door with a flick of her head.
"You need to leave," she growled.
"I want a word with you," she begged, "Both of you." Chan stared at her.
"It's up to you," he murmured. Hades growled.
"If you apologize one more time for what happened ten years ago, I will kick you out faster than you can get the whole fucking sentence out."
"Okay." Hades took a seat on the counter.
"So, I want to help you with your heist. You guys are stealing the gold tonight, right?" They both nodded in unison. Venus' eyes shined, "So, we need to swap the real ones for fakes. Do you have any idea where we could get any?"
"We don't need fakes," Hades said, "Since we're getting half the profits, we get half the bars, and the others can go bye-bye."
"But, how are you going to get the gold to get to where you need to?"
"Tangible movement," Chan explained.
"Pardon?" Venus questioned.
"She can't conjure up tangible objects that aren't ice, water, or snow. That is stuff she can always create. So, it's a line of stealing. Hades uses magic to move tangible items into pieces of the things she can create."
"So, you can transfer the gold bars without having to know where it is?" Venus asked, getting more and more eager with every twist and turn.
"Technically, yes."
"That's so cool!"
"How is it possible that you two are related?" Chan asked, his eyes going from twin to twin.
Hades' face was thin and showed prominent cheekbones and hollow cheeks. Her jawline was particularly sharp, and her short cropped hair made sure of it. Her large grey eyes contained a cold and dark spark to them, yet they had an alluring quality to it. Chan would deem Hades a living, breathing, fully functioning ice statue, complete with nasty quips and violent tendencies.
If Chan associated the younger twin with an ice statue, then it would be safe for him to categorize the older twin as a fireball. Venus' face was rounder, fuller. Her hair was long and flowing, reaching her waist. Her eyes were brown and gentle, but they were attractive, nonetheless. Venus was as warm as the sun allowed it, but she was also dangerous, but not as dangerous as her younger sister.
"We don't know how, either, Chan," Hades answered, fluttering away quickly like a bird.
London, England-Saturday, 6:30pm
Venus wriggled her way into the bottom of the truck. Hades had no qualms about it, despite being fully capable, and Chan suggested the idea in the first place. "You can't pull a Harley Quinn like Hades is capable of doing," he told her. Sadly, she knew he was right.
Hades didn't need to feel. Hell, she didn't even need to understand the emotions—she could lose herself in her head to the point of which she could be Harley Quinn. It was rare, but Hades looked much more intimidating without makeup than Venus did with layers of cosmetics on her face.
"Have fun," Hades said, shutting the truck doors, and moving out. With a flick of her wrists, Hades disappeared, Chan in tow.
It was uncomfortable, the drive to the warehouse. Venus felt suffocated. But, she had to remain calm, or else the whole plan would fail. She could feel herself feeling queasy. So this is what Hades felt like, Venus thought to herself.
When the truck arrived the warehouse, Venus awaited the smell of gold. She smelled it, all right. Rummaging her pocket, she found the tranquilizer needle.
The loading finished, and she heard them going outside. It felt like hours until they stopped. Venus smiled to herself.
Hades and Chan stood in front of the truck, both donning skull masks and wielding baseball bats. With the girl's nefarious cackle and the young man's impish glint, they made a perfect (or near perfect) rendition of Harley Quinn and the Joker, albeit without the abuse that comes along with such a relationship.
The truck driver, a member of the Scotland Yard, stepped outside, gun ready to shoot, but Hades quickly knocked him down with an icicle the size of a bullet. A few more whacks with her trusty baseball bat and he were out of the picture.
The action caused the other agent to step out, Chan immediately greeting him with his own baseball bat. A little more violent in handling the police member, he abrasively pummeled the man. Shockingly, he enjoyed it.
With the commotion outside, it made Venus' job plenty easier. A quick walk from the guard watching the gold, and the girl stabbed him with the tranquilizer. Pushing herself out of her hiding spot, she saw Chan and Hades open the door, black bags in their hands. None of them exchanged words as they began to pack the gold, quickly making work of their task.
Finishing up, Venus quickly rearranged the gold bars and watched as Chan and Hades left the scene.
"Why do I have to clean up your guys' mess?" she asked them before performing the operation.
"Because you're the person who pretty much assigned this to us?" Chan answered.
"So, enjoy yourself, sis," Hades finished.
Venus muttered, "Damn their twin thinking."
London, England-Sunday, 7pm
"You ready?" Chan asked, watching Hades apply makeup onto her face. Venus caught a red-eye back to New York, which left the two on their own. Not that they genuinely needed her.
"Not really."
"Why?"
"I think tonight is it. My fortune comes true."
"You mean your tarot?" Chan queried. Hades nodded.
"Ever since I learned how to read tarot cards, I took my own. It's never changed since."
"Well, let's hope that this works, right?" he said.
She didn't say any more. Chan watched the girl tousled her hair, allowing it to be unruly and messy. He would've expected her to at least make her hair neat, but he supposed the hair was a Hades Railynne Frost trademark. Even at the party, she left it that way.
Her dress was a charcoal grey, resting past her thighs. The sleeves were long, resting slightly past her elbows comfortably. She wore thigh-high boots and dark makeup. Her grey eyes shined with anticipation.
"Ladies and gentlemen, let us welcome Chan Bang!" the announcer introduced. Hades pecked his cheek and allowed him to go up on stage.
As he braced himself, he awaited applause and grandeur from the full house in the theatre; he stood directly in the middle, a circle formed around him. He remembered Hades telling him that tickets sold out within fifteen minutes.
"Thank you!" he said, a smile on his face. "Good evening everyone! Now, our beloved announcer may have introduced me, but he seems to have forgotten one person." Everyone gasped, whispering words to each other about the mysterious person.
"She is my beautiful, dark, even heartless partner. Please welcome the very talented Hades Railynne Frost!" Water began to swirl around, revealing the said girl in all her dark, icy glory. People applauded at the elaborate introduction. She waved towards the audience, but she didn't say anything.
"Come on, Hades. They don't bite," Chan urged. Hades playfully scoffed.
"Chan, if they don't bite, then I do," she remarked.
"Well, then, if you don't mind, Hades, could you please create something?"
"Any preferences?" she asked, her lithe fingers weaving swirls and twirls.
"How about something dangerous?" he asked her. A smirk adorned her face as her fingers manage to construct a beautifully dangerous staff, complete with a piercing dragon's head on top. She tossed the weapon towards Chan, who winced at the touch.
"It burns doesn't it?" she asked, Hades' voice taking on an impish quality to it.
"I honestly feel like I should get used to this," Chan commented, arousing laughter from everyone in the theatre as the staff returned to its creator's nimble claws.
"Anyways," the teenaged boy said, straightening himself out quickly, "Tonight, we are going to perform something impossible. Tonight, we're going to make gold appear."
"Chan, you should be a little more specific than that," Hades chided, "We're going to rob a bank." Applause appeared.
"So, if you may, Hades," Chan said, "Might you conjure up a block of ice. A big one, if you must." A few finger-tutting movements, and a wave of her hands later, a chamber of ice was created. The girl moved to sit on top of it like a throne, and she flared out her tarot cards.
"Alright, who wants their tarot card read?" Chan asked, erupting a plethora of hands into the air. Chan smiled; he found his desired hand, and Hades saw it, as well.
"The kind gentleman in the black suit in the fifth aisle," he called out. Unshockingly to the partners, but inversely surprising to everyone else, up stood the familiar man in the Brunello Cucinelli suit. Matthew Rossi. He wore gloves on his hands: his wounds from touching Akanen still hadn't healed. Secretly, Chan was glad.
As Matthew stepped up onto the stage, Chan whispered into his ear, "Don't even think about looking at my girl like that." It sounded more of a hiss than an actual whisper, but he was thankful no one thought too much of it.
Hades lightly floated down from the block of ice, an effortless wave of her hand making the cards float. "Pick," she insisted, and he did, revealing a card—the Wheel of Fortune.
"I don't think tonight is going to go in your favor, sweetheart," Hades hummed into his ear, the girl's cryptic message coupled with the male's threat causing the hair on his spine to raise.
People began to realize that Hades emanated a silent type of power, a power that she held over Matthew and Chan. Chan was more of the showman between the two of them, containing a bright charm and gleaming eyes. They tangled and danced and struck around and at each other like they were magnets or warriors.
"So, Matthew, you have gold, do you not?" Chan prompted. Matthew nodded. "So, if you don't mind, can we"—he gestured to the audience—"start taking jabs at how much you have?" Matthew shrugged.
"It's all for entertainment, right?" he queried.
"Of course," Hades chimed, her voice ringing through like a bell, "Why don't I start with a hundred gold bars?"
The slab of ice began to change. Slowly, a pile of gold made its way inside. Everyone seemed impressed, blissfully unaware of the reality behind it.
"Hades, I don't think your guess is quite accurate," Chan stated, "I think it's two hundred gold bars." The magic began working again, another hundred gold bars impregnated into the slab.
"How much more?" Chan asked Hades.
"One more," Hades answered, allowing Chan to press his lips against her hair briefly before moving away.
"Does anyone in the audience want to give this a go?" the icy girl asked. No one raised their hand. "Alright then. Matthew, would you mind telling us how much gold is in your vault as of this morning?"
"Three hundred and fifty gold bars," the man boasted. The magic had already started working, maneuvering the gold bars into the ice.
"Most peculiar, isn't it?" Hades murmured in a faux morose tone. Her lithe fingers created a pattern that melted and evaporated the ice. "Matthew, could you stand aside for a moment please?" she asked, moving around him to the gold.
Chan took over from where Hades left off, beginning with a black cloth that he used to cover the gold. "So, now that we have robbed the gold, we thought it would be a good idea to just...donate it."
In one fluid motion, he removed the cloth, the bars gone. Gasps aroused from the crowd, and Matthew seemed in a state of agitation and sheer amazement, muttering words of profanity as he stared. "How much longer?" Chan asked in the same manner as he previously used.
"Hush," Hades mumbled, partially enjoying his impatience. Not that she understood it, of course.
The pair heard a scream, swerving their heads to the woman in white. In her hands, she clutched one twenty-four karat gold bar. Another person on the other end of the theatre followed suit, waving his bar. Other patrons began to do the same.
Meanwhile, Matthew was fuming in anger. When he had figured out how it was possible, Hades' laughter cut off this train of thought. Light and dark, the businessman knew that it wasn't innocuous as it appeared. It seemed reminiscent of a cackle, particularly one of Bellatrix Lestrange's, but he couldn't do anything without tarnishing his image.
Perhaps she laughed because of that particular reason. Stuck in a dead end, Matthew couldn't do anything without having catastrophic results. Chan didn't do anything to stop her, even encouraging it. Her feet made their way towards him, and she grabbed his neck, pulling it down. Matthew wanted to scream in pain, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. Not with her feline-esque eyes staring at him with such naïveté that he became enraptured once more.
"Don't think you can get away with hurting people. It won't last," she hissed, poison lacing every word. Hades relapsed back into her role, commanding the attention of the audience.
"We just robbed a bank," Hades stated the obvious, "Why did we do it? Especially from a man so powerful and so high up in our capitalist society?"
"This magic trick," Chan elaborated, "Is only one of eight others you'll see tonight. It will all come together soon. I promise."
"Now," Hades concluded, "Let us take a trip to Seoul. It's four thirty in the morning. Hopefully, we'll see a sunrise." Following a wave of hers and Chan's hands, a screen popped up, with a connection to Seoul, South Korea.
London, England-Monday, 3am
The show ended, and Hades stood backstage, thanking the audience that passed by. As she was readjusting certain parts of her hair, a hand snatched her wrist, screaming in pain. It was laughable to her.
"You do realize you're immensely incapable of surprises?" Hades' voice held no malice or scorn, nor did it carry sympathy and care—it was, simply put, a blank, numb slate.
"My fortune, my fame, my life," Matthew snarled, "You took that all away from me tonight. How heartless are you?"
"And you don't think I've never had anything taken away?" she answered in turn. Matthew noted that despite her rhetoric, her voice was void of any emotion.
"With your voice, I wouldn't believe so."
"I lost more than you could imagine. More than you on this one night. So, excuse me for the lack of humanity in my tone of voice, but I don't think you understand what loss is." Hades walked away from him, hailing a taxi and making her way back to Black Diamond. Stepping into her home, she took out her Fountain tarot deck from her jacket, shuffling it.
Laying her six cards out, she huffed a sigh. Her combination remained intact. The Empress, The Hermit, The Star, The Moon, The Hierophant, and The Lovers.
"Love is your likely outcome?" her current favorite voice asked, the familiar Australian accent gracing her ears.
"I suppose so," her voice said. With only an amber light illuminating the room and minimal proximity between the two, plenty of tension was in the air.
"Why?" Chan asked after a period of silence. She spared him a brief glance, then continued her errands. He understood her though. "Why do you isolate yourself? Why do you put walls that people can't break?"
Hades sighed. "Sometimes, the only way to protect yourself from pain"—she grabbed a book from one of the shelves—"is to turn off your feelings. In my case, however, feeling emotions isn't a luxury I get to have."
"Does it hurt?"
"Pardon?" she questioned.
"When you can't describe things like your feelings."
"No." Chan leaned up closer to the silver-haired girls, brown eyes boring into silver ones. At this point, the two were nose to nose, toe to toe. God forbid that their audience see them go at it like this. They would've enjoyed—and ruined—the intimate, tense, moment between the two that they wore like a second skin.
"Can I do something?" he asked.
"Is it kiss me?" she retorted, leaving him completely dumbfounded. "Your face says it all," she answered his silent question.
"Yet, I'll ask that question again—can I kiss you?" Her eyes pierced his own with a provocative glare.
"Sweetheart, you got burned touching my wrist; what makes you think that you aren't getting hurt when you kiss me?" The blue-grey haired boy leaned in closer, only centimeters apart.
"I'll take my chances, love."
"Prove it," she seethed, in both playfulness and earnestness.
Almost to spite her, Chan rammed his lips onto hers for a kiss. Hades didn't react; she didn't know how to. So, she allowed him to, yet she pulled away first. Silence ensued.
"You're right," he remarked.
"About what?"
"Kissing you. It burns."
"Told you," Hades concluded, a warm-hearted, malicious smile adorning her sharp features. Chan pulled her in closer.
"I never said I didn't like it."
Madrid, Spain-Wednesday, 9am
Madrid was beautiful, in Hades' opinion. She remembered looking through the maps as she was painting her cards, and eventually, she followed with some research. Hades remembered asking Chan about going there, and—because he doted on her so much—he agreed.
Hades knew that Chan grew up well. Three years did plenty to a person. He still dyed his hair grey to match with her, and updated his sense of fashion (though, she wanted to burn his sweater that looked like a fucking mattress). He often wore bandanas and other dark things. Chan always thought that it was cute to match with his girlfriend.
The term girlfriend was weird to her. Initially, the word felt so foreign on her tongue—much like the word boyfriend—yet they acted as an engaged couple, so Hades didn't comprehend what made the feeling so different from the first time. Maybe because of this time around, it was genuine, not a facade. It didn't matter to her: she was content with it, and that was enough.
"Love, what do you want to eat?" Chan asked her as they walked down the market.
"Not eat, Chan. I want to drink some horchata." He shook his head at her.
"I promise, we'll get you your horchata and whatever you want," Chan reassured, keeping her close. He didn't feel the stinging pain anymore; he got used to it, and eventually, all he felt was a light tingling sting. And, he liked it.
"Wouldn't Carlota be here?" Chan inquired, resulting in Hades to smack him upside the head.
"She lives in Argentina, Aussie Boy. That's in South America. We're still in Europe," she commented.
"Right," he admitted sheepishly. Pecking his cheek, she found what she wanted: a large cup of horchata. The boy saw, as well.
"Could I have a glass of horchata?" Chan requested in broken Spanish. Hades tried to stifle her laughter, ultimately failing. The man prepared to scoop out a large glass of the beverage, but he froze the moment he heard Hades' laughter (still a cackle-giggle combination that seemed odd, but very genuine).
"You two are the magicians, right? From London?" he asked in rapid Spanish. Chan and Hades caught different excerpts and phrases of the sentence, stitching them together to understand it.
"Yeah, we're them," Chan, the better Spanish speaker, responded after the brief delay.
"I loved what you and your friends did. It was breathtaking!" he praised.
The Stray Kids (as the general populace liked referring to them as), especially Hades and Chan, still weren't used to the level of praise they received for performing and formulating things for their joy. The others assumed it was because they acted as the supposed leaders of the group.
"Oh, thank you," Chan thanked the man. The man returned to ladling horchata into the glass. Capping it, he handed the large cup to Hades, who was about to reach for her wallet, but the street vendor refused.
"It's on me. I promise." Profusely thanking the man, the couple continued their stroll, their hands laced together.
"How is it that you like horchata?" Chan fired.
"How is it that you like Valentine's day?" Hades retorted.
"And here I was, thinking you liked this holiday."

Self-Care Interview Series: Erin Lovell Verinder
Erin Lovell Verinder is a herbalist, nutritionist and energetic healer living in the wilds of the Byron Bay hinterland in Australia, working with clients locally in her Sydney clinic and worldwide via Skype.
Routine
— Is routine important to you or do you like things to be more open and free?
I honestly love both. I keep certain parts of my day very structured especially around work days and where I can, I claim open space. I follow structure to bring in the foundations of support that are essential for me to thrive and maintain my balance. Like slow mornings, connecting to nature, enjoying a whole nourishing breakfast. But then I open up my days where possible to flow & allow spontaneity.
— What do your mornings look like? If they differ from day to day, describe your ideal morning.
I keep my mornings slow and sacred, it’s been a very intentional movement towards this over the years. I wake with the sunlight pouring into our bedroom, we live in an old church and the light in here is just next level serene. I always keep the blinds open to allow my body rhythms to harmonize with the sun and moon cycle. This regulates your cortisol and melatonin in such a fundamental way. I allow myself to wake slowly, no rush, no jump out of bed, no alarms, no startle response! I will then take time to do some stretching sequences with conscious breath, and then sit for a 20 minute meditation. Followed by a morning dog walk around our very green country town. Other mornings it’s a swim in the ocean with my husband and a lazy lay on the sand. After this, it’s breakfast time. I brew a tea, or make a tonic and take that out into the garden. I really feel it’s so important to have a whole breakfast, and we really honour that in our household, we sit and chat and connect over a meal before the day unfolds. I do my absolute best to only engage in anything work related after 8am and completely screen free before then is the daily goal.
— Do you have any bedtime rituals that help you sleep well?
Yes! I am super ritualistic about the evening wind down. I ensure I am off all screens at least two hours before sleep. I feel this is so greatly important to allow our bodies to align and flow into the yin cycle of the night. I switch off all overhead lights and only use very warm low light lamps as the sun sets. This is another trick to converse with your body to wind down, let go of any tasks and prep for rest. I read, write, listen to music and savour evenings for creative flow and conversation with my husband.
— Do you have any kind of mindfulness practice?
Many. I practice conscious breath and meditation as my main allies. But I also spend A LOT of time with plants, growing, making, conversing and in nature scapes. This is for me the ultimate mindfulness practice of oneness, presence and connection.
Sustenance
— Describe your typical or ideal meal for each of these:
Breakfast – Scrambled eggs with turmeric, garlic and greens, avocado and some home fermented veggies on the side.
Lunch – Wild caught Mahi Mahi with tarragon, parsley, lemon and garlic cooked in ghee, on top of a bed of greens with some roasted sweet potato on the side. (Literally one of my favourite dishes ever)
Snack – I love smoothies. Often a smoothie, my current fav is Strawberries, cashew nut butter, cashew nut mylk, collagen, hemp seeds, tocos, cinnamon, vanilla powder & ashwaganda powder.
Dinner – San choy bow, with a rainbow of veggies & lots of bold ginger flavour in vibrant cos lettuce cups.
— Do you do caffeine and in what form? If not, what is your drink of choice in the morning?
I actually do not, I am completely stimulant free. I have not always been, but just find myself so very sensitive to any stimulants these days. I used to love love love a great spicy black chai tea but since going caffeine free I have replaced it with a dandelion chai blend I make myself that is just so warming and grounding I adore it. Plus no crazy energy spikes and lows, so thats a plus!
— Do you have a sweet tooth and do you take any measures to keep it in check?
At the same time when I let go of stimulants, I completely let go of sweets- even natural sweeteners. In the past I have been an avid lover of raw chocolate and quite the connoisseur (ha) but these days I make my own carob chocolate that has no sweetener in it at all. I love carob as it’s very sweet naturally so you can get away with no added sweeteners. I pair it with vanilla powder and they work synergistically to give a natural sweetness that I find so comforting.
— Are there any particular supplements, herbs, or tinctures/tonics that you take regularly and find to be helpful with your energy level and general wellness?
I do utilize supplement support as needed, this shifts as my body shifts. I love Vitamin C on so many levels but particularly for its adrenally restorative healing elements, so it is absolutely in my daily supplement routine, alongside Magnesium citrate on the daily. With herbs, I will vary what I am taking depending on my needs. I add herbal powders and medicinal mushrooms to my tonics and smoothies. Currently my favourites are Withania (Ashwaganda) and Reishi. I also am a huge lover of infusions (long loose leaf herbal brews) and always have a big jar of an overnight infusion with me to sip throughout my day. My most utilized blend would be Nettle leaf, Oat straw and Hibiscus. Earthy, calming, tangy and nourishing.
Exercise
— Do you exercise and do you have a particular exercise routine that you repeat weekly?
Years go I had a heinous back injury, I herniated multiple discs from overexercising. My approach and relationship to body movement completely shifted after this, from rigorous to gentleness. It is still an area of my life I have to encourage myself back to and approach more as an act of self love. Taking care of my temple. I walk my pups daily, I love pilates and swimming, I have begun the be.come project and absolutely LOVE the approach to body movement with body positivity, inclusivity, no need for any equipment and in the comfort of my own home. This all feels really supportive and a mix of gentle yet effective support for me and my body.
— Do you find exercise to be pleasurable, torturous or perhaps a little of both? How do you put yourself in the right mindset in order to keep up with it?
I am not a natural athlete by any measure! I have recently connected to how emotional it can be to return to body movement when you have been through a big physical injury/body change/life change. So for me the way I psyche myself up to do a session is to come from self love, to know this is a loving act of care for my body. That really helps me so much. Also knowing there are no rules to how you must move your body, allow exercise to meet your vibration- yin, yang and all between. Shifting the type of body movement I do with my menstrual cycle/hormones is so key. Be your own compass.
Beauty
— What is your idea of beauty – external, internal or both?
Authenticity, when someone is just purely themselves and at ease with it. I find it absolutely stunning.
— What is your skincare approach – face and body?
Oils, oils and more oil. I swear by the dewy hydration of oils. I am pretty low maintenance with skin care, and have noticed I need a lot less intervention since moving to the sea and swimming in the ocean most days. The salt magic is so nourishing for the skin. I also find the sun very healing, contrary to the fear of UV rays we have been indoctrinated with! I use a homemade herbal balm for a lot of applications, hair mask, makeup remover, and moisturizer. It is a power packed plant based mix, and such a heavenly blend. I also use Ritual oil, a moringa and blue lotus oil as a body moisturizer. I am in my mid 30’s and really notice my skin responds so well to the dewy goodness of oils. I practice dry body brushing also, which I feel is so wonderful to aid stagnation and lymphatic flow. I use a jade roller which I keep in the fridge for extra lymphatic cooling, and use on my face every few days with oil. I always end my showers with cold water, to add in a hydrotherapy element. I wear very little makeup, but when I do it is always natural, as clean as can be. I love RMS and Ere Perez.
— Are there any foods, herbs or supplements you find to be helpful to your skin/hair/general glow?
The importance of a vibrant whole foods diet and hydration is EVERYTHING! So many compounds in our foods, fruit + veggies are anti aging and collagen boosting anti oxidant heros. I drink 3+ litres of filtered water daily and do my very best to eat a rainbow of seasonal organic fruit/veggies daily and honestly I rely on this to support my health, skin and hair primarily. I do add in a marine based collagen daily to either smoothies or tonics. Also I am in a stage of encouraging my hair to grow, and am using nettle, rosemary and horsetail infusions as a hair rinse. I also massage in olive oil and rosemary oil into my scalp, truly it is so simple and aids hair growth.
— Do you have any beauty tips/tricks you’ve found to be especially useful throughout the years?
A low tox life is key. Keep your stress in check, move your body, eat as clean as possible – mostly plants, organics or pesticide free produce, clean water and clean air. The most incredibly glowy humans I know follow this ethos. This has been my guideline and I am often told I really do not look my age. I am so at ease with ageing but it is always nice to hear you are maintaining a youthful glow!
Stress, etc.
— Do you practice any consistent routines in order to avoid stress?
I really do. I work for myself and direct all of my offerings at this point. This can be demanding and means “work” can have a never-ending feel. There are always so many thoughts, needs and energy streams flowing into my work life. I also feel when you work as a space holder and in the healing realms, your energy output can be hefty. Burn out is high in this line of work, as you truly want to assist so deeply to aid others, we can often throw our needs to the side. I have learnt this many times in my years as a clinician/healer. I implement a lot of consistency with a structured clinic week~ limiting the amount of clients I see weekly to where I feel my energy is at and how many clients I can truly be present for. I balance myself with time off, away from screens, in nature and welcome in receiving energy to counteract my giving energy. My self care practice is the core of how I seek balance. I am actually freakily good at giving back to myself, which I believe enables me to do what I do!
— If stress cannot be avoided, what are your ways of dealing with it?
For me, it is much healthier to come at it head on.. (typical Aries answer!) I do my finest to address the stressors, and clear the way. Whether this means a mountain of admin, which is often a stressor for me as I not a natural lover of admin. I bunker down, switch off all other distractions, play some flute music or chants, burn some incense and get in the zone. When I exit that zone I feel so accomplished and reward myself with an ocean swim, or a nature walk to balance out the mental space I have been in.
— What measures do you take when you sense a cold/general feeling of being under the weather coming on?
First and foremost I rest. Immunity can be a very strong conversation our bodies communicate to us with the message of needed REST. My go to supplement and herbal approach is to take a high dose of Vitamin C consistently in divided doses throughout my day, I also add in zinc supplements. I always have an immune focused liquid herbal tonic in my first aid support cabinet, so I begin this at a high frequent dose to meet the acute presentation of a cold/virus~ generally dosing up to 4 x daily. Usually it will have Echinacea, andrographis, elderberry, manuka, thyme in it. I love medicinal mushrooms to support immunity so I will take a blend of Reishi and Chaga in higher doses. I avoid raw foods and focus on lots of cooked warming nourishing food to feed the cold, congees, broths, soups, stew. I also make fresh oregano, thyme with sliced lemon & ginger tea. If I really honour the rest that is needed, the cold/rundown feelings will shift very swiftly.
— How do you reconcile work-time with free-time? Do those things overlap for you or do you keep them distinctly separate?
The best thing I ever did was to get a separate work phone. I have a dedicated phone that my clients can contact me on, so in my free time it is left at home or on silent. This has helped me enormously create healthy boundaries. I also do not have my work emails on my phone, so I do not check them at all unless I am sitting down at my computer to work. It is so important to be available to your own process and own life, especially when you are in the field of assisting others. These simple interventions help fortify those boundaries greatly for me.
Motivation
— Describe the actions you take or mindset you try to tap into in order to stay on track with your self-care practice and being nice to yourself?
I return to softness with myself if I lose my way a little. I do my best to not judge or engage in negative self talk. I soften and return to my centre. We all have patterns we are cycling. Although I feel I am quite a master of my own self care practice I definitely can get caught up in my workload a fair bit. One thing I do consciously do is to book a treatment in weekly in some form, usually a bodywork-massage session. I find this tactile healing so restorative.
— What do you consider to be the single most important change you’ve made to your routine or lifestyle in terms of wellness?
I recently moved from the mountains to the sea, although they are both completely beautiful nature rich locations I was very much in need a big environment change for my own health and wellbeing. Having lived in a very cold environment mountain side for 10 + years I was craving the warmth, the salt and the sun. Being by the ocean and soaking up the sun rays has been so fundamentally healing for me at this point. Total game changer! The power of changing your environment is so potent when you feel the call to do so.
— How do you deal with periods characterized by a lack of inspiration or procrastination?
I acknowledge that this too shall pass, it is transient. I do my best to trust my own creative genius. I am quite a forward motion person, so when I am feeling uninspired it absolutely can get me down. I am naturally a procrastinator in many ways, which can be so frustrating but saying that I also have the ability to then smash out the tasks in an uncanny way! I often find when I am not in such a wonderful place with myself I feel that sense of stagnation, so I do my very best to get to the roots of that stagnation. Often it takes me getting into nature to be re inspired, crafting out some quiet space to re energize and tackle the task head on. I try to ask myself what is the block, and unpack the block to free up the energy flow.
— A book/movie/class that influenced your view of self-nourishment or self-care.
As cheesy at it sounds I LOVED Practical Magic, the witchy plant potions and the apothecary Sandra Bullock’s character opened was a total inspiration for me as teenager.. & still is now (lol).
Knowledge
— What was your path to becoming a herbalist, nutritionist, and energetic healer? How do all of those practices interweave for you?
I was always drawn to the esoteric realms and the mystery of nature. As a little girl I loved being outside, I loved the flowers, the trees, the plants, the grasses, the oceans, the mountains. I loved being an observer and always felt so held when I was in nature. As soon as I began to understand that plants could have a positive effect on our health, it just fascinated me. Learning about folklore of plant medicine, applications and remedies drew me into a language I wanted to be fluent in. I believe that much of our call to the plant path is remembering, these plants have been with us through our ancestral lines for eons. My career began really at the age of 16 with energetic healing, I met a group of wild women up north in Australia and was welcomed into circles, introduced to the concepts of healing, and recognized as a student of these realms. I learnt reiki which led to crystal healing, then to sound healing, colour therapy, kinesiology.. I went to a college for 2 years to learn energetic healing in depth and graduated by the age of 19 holding full in depth sessions on auric healing and clearing energetic blockages. For me it felt too much too soon. So I went and travelled, met my husband in the USA and studied a whole lot more. When I returned to Australia I wanted to anchor my knowledge of healing with more grounded modalities so I began studying Naturopathic medicine. I forked off into a Bachelor of Western Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Medicine. I loved learning about plants and food as medicine, I loved the union of science and grass roots knowledge. Over years of being in practice, I have found that there is no way or no need to seperate these modalities. I weave them all in together to ultimately support the client in a very holistic way. I approach my practice with this lens of perception. I lead with intuition, and merge functional testing, pathology testing, traditional folk medicine, evidence based plant medicine, nutritional medicine, and energetics all to support. I believe there are always energetics involved in a health presentation, along with the demand for nutritional healing as powerful ally, and herbal medicine to assist, shift and support. Aligning these healing modalities is a potent combination. Essentially the basis of Naturopathic Medicine is individualised care, no one case is the same. This ethos rings true to me, there is not one client I have worked with that is the same as any other. How can we approach health in one way, or believe there is one remedy for one presentation? It goes against the nature of our uniqueness! My practice is about honouring the individuals path, story and health goals.
— You put a lot of emphasis on gut health in your practice and believe it to be the root to all balanced health. Can you talk a little bit about why you see this as such an important aspect of wellbeing?
“All diseases begin in the gut” – Hippocrates had it right!
So many issues stem from the gut, it is the root of our health. With the emergence of continued evolving science we are seeing so much more information come to light around the microbiome/microbiota, which is truly wonderful. Much of our immunity is linked with gut health, it impacts mental health greatly with our “second brain” residing in the gut producing neurotransmitters, it is involved in the auto immune expression, it defines our ability to absorb and produce nutrients/vitamins/minerals, it impacts our metabolism, it is directly connected to our stress response and digestion responds accordingly.. And so much more… I work very closely with digestive healing with each and every one of my clients as I believe this is a key element to balanced health and shifting imbalanced symptoms. Many of my clients present with poor digestion and we dig like detectives to get to the roots, often it is a leaky gut like picture – with parasites, yeast overgrowths or SIBO which we generally detect via functional testing. Once we have a good sense of what is actually happening in the gut, we go in with a supportive treatment plan – lifestyle, supplemental, nutritional and herbal interventions. It always astounds me how health can transform so greatly, from imbalanced to balanced with the right support, intention and dedication. Our bodies are so wise, and so willing to transform.
— What is your favorite way of incorporating herbal medicine into your (or your clients’) everyday life?
I personally incorporate it in so many ways. I make my own products and use them on my skin and in my home on the daily, I drink herbal teas and infusions daily and use tonic herbs to support my body/being. I have a herbal garden that is buzzing right now, so connecting with the plants via gardening is medicine to me. There is something so potent about growing and caring for a plant and utilising her healing, knowing the story of the plants beginnings enhances the healing power I believe. For clients~ it really depends but I do always advise infusions to become a part of their everyday lives. They are so very simple and accessible, basically a long brewed overnight tea! If you are working with me in a session we will touch on many ways to incorporate plant medicine into your life, from the herbs that are suitable for your current process, to cleaning up your skin care with more plant love, to working with herbal tablets/liquid tonics for marked support.
Fun and Inspiration
— What is something you are particularly excited about at the moment?
This next year feels so full of creativity, as I expand and launch multiple new offerings. Right now I am in a potent brewing stage, so I look forward to it all coming to fruition!
— What do you do to unwind or treat yourself?
Days off at the beach, going into the bush, gardening in my medicinal plant patch, reading a great book, screen free days, massages, hugs with my husband & dogs.
— A book/song/movie/piece of art to feed the soul:
Book – Braiding Sweetgrass – Robin Wall Kimmerer Song – Stay – Cat Power/ Ba Movie – Call me by your name Piece of Art – A oil pastel pencil drawing gifted to me by my husband and family by my dear friend and incredible creator Chanel Tobler called “Curves like jam”
— Is there anyone you would like to hear from next in this interview series?
Emily L’ami from Bodha, she is a scent magician.
