SUBLIME CINEMA #659 - KILLER OF SHEEP
Charles Burnett's college thesis film, which is now preserved by the Library of Congress. Loose LA narratives taking place at the end of the 70's, beautiful black and white transfers have become available after many years of this film languishing in obscurity.

An inscrutable, nightmarish, surreal dreamscape set to Modest Mussorgsky's famous composition of the same name, "A Night on Bald Mountain" is one of only a handful of short films ever created using pinscreen animation, a method in which shadows cast by miniscule steel pins positioned against a sidelit screen are manipulated to produce images of unique texture and dimension unparalleled in the field of traditional animation. Co-directors Alexandre Alexeieff (1901–1982) and his partner Claire Parker (1906–1981) built their first pinscreen device in 1931 with the assistance of Alexandre's then-wife, fellow artist Alexandra Grinevsky (1899–1976). Alexeieff and Parker then spent nearly two years animating this 8-minute film, which preceded the better-known cel-animated short "Night on Bald Mountain" from Disney's Fantasia (1940) by seven years. "A Night on Bald Mountain" represented the public debut of Alexeieff and Parker's pinscreen method.
A NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN (1933) "Une nuit sur le mont chauve" Directed and animated by Alexandre Alexeieff, Claire Parker

While the extent to which dot and bubble handled its racism themes well is something I cant comment on due to the fact my skin tone is approximately the same as a sickly raw chicken, I do think it was a ballsy ass move that I do really like to have the Episode Where We Confront The Doctor Is BlackTM be set in the future rather than the past.

first thing im writing for a longass time 💀 let’s hope this is a worthy comeback
explicit content, but no actual smut. enter at your own risk.
‘shiiit. forgot to get y/n sum’ for christmas.’ toji lay, sprawled out on the couch, long limbs hanging off the other armrest, one arm circled around the neck of the couch, the other lazily scrolling on his phone. you weren’t at home for a few hours, out ‘christmas shopping’ or something or other with your bitches. toji didn’t see the point in that shit but hey anything to make his girl happy. however this made him realise the obvious fault in his judgement.
‘fuck man, what do i do?’ he stares up at the ceiling for a second or so, his eyes blank. he really should do something, shouldn’t he? yeah but toji’s a lwk dumb fuck so nothing came to mind.
a new pair of lingerie? hell no, that would be a waste of his money cuz no1 he was a brokeass and no2 it was going to be ripped off of you anyway. a new kitten? no, there was only gonna be one meowing cat in this household.
then he had an idea. maybe a stupid, horny idea, but an idea nonetheless.
‘toji, i’m back home!’ you call, at least five shopping bags on each arm. usually he’d be loping towards you already to help with carrying the bags, but still no sign of him. so all you could do was sigh and lumber over to the dining table, dropping the bags down and gasping at the weight now off your arms.
you notice a little bit of pink peeking out from under the table, bending down (hoping toji wasn’t boutta come outta nowhere n slap that ass) and picking it up only to realise it was ribbon. ribbon that you’d kept in a closet for ages, not sure what to do with it. you shrug. maybe toji’s ass was finally trying his hand at gift wrapping.
another small flash of pink in your peripheral vision. another ribbon.
look up, and there was another piece of pretty pink ribbon, leading in a small trail. groaning at the extra work you had to do now, you followed the trail, picking each ribbon up and cradling them in your hands. this trail brought you to … the bedroom?
the door was slightly creaked open, a crack of light popping out as another piece of ribbon lay lifeless on the floor. you open the door a little more to grab the final piece of ribbon, before looking up to see if there were any more lying on the bedroom floor.
then you were scared out of your wits.
in a good way.
toji grins at you from his perch on the bed, bare from head to toe, the scar on his mouth stretching nastily. the exact same pink ribbon you saw on the floor is wrapped around him, in the most arousing places possible. your eyes widen.
‘merry christmas, y/n.’

In honor of me finding out Denzel is gonna be 70 this year 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look. Movies are always gonna sensationalize for narrative, and you have to do your own research.
THAT BEING SAID! Very often Denzel will Denzel in his movies, and I love him but it's true. But when he played Malcolm X, on God I thought I was witnessing an entirely different person. I forgot I was watching a movie. That was how good I felt he played this role. I honestly don't think anybody else at that point could have ate this role like he did 🤌🏾🔥
This movie sparked radicalization in freshman year Ice. It was the first time I ever sat down and said "hey so they were bullshitting through an agenda in K-12 talking about Malcolm X?" It was off to the races from there. I feel like it should be required viewing. Everyone should have to see this movie at least once in their lives.
