Illustration of Rich Black
𖤐Hello everyone Kuronians𖤐
Today I would like to tell you about the illustration Yanuzza did for the 15th anniversary of the series. The illustration in question was presented as the official visual of the Rich Black or the magnificent exhibition that perfectly summed up every facet of the work.Being a very complex illustration, that is probably why it was simplified in the G-fantasy magazine while still bringing the same atmosphere.In addition, the illustration we see in the magazine was the first idea she sketched, whereas, the Rich Black illustration she came up with by modifying the initial idea several times.
Tumblr media
Dwelling on Rich Black's illustration, we are immediately catapulted into a gloomy and cold atmosphere, where the figures of birds flying away certainly do not help to make this illustration more welcoming.We can say that the scene takes place on a chessboard where we notice the two protagonists in the foreground. Sebastian, and especially 'Ciel', are wearing very peculiar clothes, so peculiar that our attention lingers only on them.
Apparently Sebastian's tailcoat looks like the usual garment he always wears, but when seen up close, one can see that behind the back it has a black lace embroidery depicting a horned skull crowned with beautiful lilies. Just above the swallowtails one can see another lace decoration containing two buttons.The trousers, seemingly innocuous, have a side band with lace encrustations forming the Roman characters XV or the number fifteen.
Tumblr media
If Sebastian's look amazed you with its elegance, that of 'Ciel' is undoubtedly on another level. Starting from the jacket, you can see some very peculiar brooches, in fact each of them represents an arc from the manga. They are all placed on the jacket, except for one, namely the brooch that specularly represents two identical skulls. This brooch represents the Blue Memory arc and happens to be placed on the shoe. At first glance it might look like an anti-brother gesture, but in fact it is anything but, because in non-verbal communication it is the feet that are the most truthful body part. If we do not like someone unconsciously when they come towards us to talk to us we will not tilt our foot towards them, symbolising a kind of 'non-acceptance' rather we will turn away or something. Perhaps with this gesture Yanuzza wanted to emphasise the relationship he had, and has, with his brother, because despite everything he will always remain a part of him.As with the butler, we have the same skull motif with lace lilies on the jacket of the human puppy. The illustration, or rather, the clothes are so well-rendered and detailed that it is easy to get lost in the details, such as the dark train of 'Ciel' ending in skulls.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, this is not the real message of the illustration, because the interesting part is behind it. It will not be very easy to explain this also because the illustration is so complex that it is not really easy to see the pawns. Yes, the pawns. Behind Sebastian and 'Ciel' there are several white pawns, not random pawns, this because we saw them in Emerald Witch where Yanuzza associated the colour white with the enemy.
White pawns
Bishop = Joker
Knight = Undertaker
Pawn = Doll
Queen = Victory
Tumblr media
In between Sebastian and 'Ciel' we can see a strange pawn, this because it is missing a piece. The pawn in question is actually that of Undertaker, the horse, whose head they 'decapitated'.On either side we can see the pawns associated with Joker and Ciel in a strange pairing... Joker is on 'Ciel's side, while Ciel on Sebastian's side. Indeed, our count has exterminated the Noah's Ark Circus and surely Joker (perhaps Polaris) will want revenge. As for Sebastian, well... he's the cause of Ciel's death and I don't think there's anything more to add. Behind the human cub is the queen's pawn, obviously associated with Victoria, but unlike the side pawns, it seems to be going the way of the horse, since it's in an unsteady position that suggests an imminent crash. Even its position does not seem coincidental, considering the great power Victoria has over 'Ciel'.
The scenario of this illustration almost seems to announce a battle, a battle that 'Ciel' will face head-on and with confidence given the way it is drawn. For the first time, we have a young man with his legs spread wide apart, in a commanding position of confidence, as if marking territory. Perhaps later Yanuzza will show us a new 'Ciel'? After all, he still has to take back his villa.
Even in this illustration we have two readings: the first is on the two protagonists who, with their peculiar clothing, not only distract us from everything else, but also bring attention to the essence of Kuroshitsuji, giving us a broad vision of the series.The same vision we had in Rich Black where each story arc had its own corner with exclusive panels, unpublished plates and more.The second reading is in the background and, unlike the first, here we do not have a focus on the series in general but on what could be a hypothetical future of the events of the manga.

Engagement on posts is completely puzzling. Using the exact same tags for relatively similar content, I got a tenfold amount of engagement for my last merch haul post. 🤔 Oh well.
Anyway, my shopping spree continued and I got a new merch haul. This time for 3 different fandoms.
~ Pandora Hearts Haul ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lovely canvas panel of Oz and Alice and lots of merchandise from the 15th anniversary of Pandora Hearts ! Unfortunately I couldn't buy Alice's stand as she was out of stock. 🥲
~ Toilet Bound Hanako-kun ~
Tumblr media
Two lovely illustrations and the pamphlet of the museum came in.
~ Black Butler ~
Am I obsessed ? Yes kinda. Do I choose the merch I buy with my ship in mind ? Yes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time my BB haul is mainly comprised of clear files. Then there are illustrations, an acrylic stand and the night garden solid perfume (which was a pain to buy because even though it's tiny and solid, many proxies refused to ship it).
I have 2 more packages on the way. Smaller thankfully for my bank account.

Black Butler Manga Celebrates Its 15th Anniversary with Special Exhibition
    To commemorate the 15th-anniversary of the serialization of Yana Toboso's popular dark fantasy manga series Black Butler in the monthly magazine G-Fantasy, Square Enix will hold the special exhibition titled "Black Butler Exhibition -Rich Black-," starting in August 2021 at the Matsuya Ginza department store in Tokyo in August 2021, then traveling to Osaka, Hyogo and Ishikawa.
  The Black Butler manga has been serialized in the magazine since September 2006. Through a wide variety of mixed media projects, including TV anime, anime feature films, live-action feature film, and musicals, the series has gained popularity not only in Japan but also all over the world, printing more than 30 million copies worldwide as of April 2021.
  The exhibition, which will start touring nationwide this summer, is based on the concept of the theme color "Rich Black" (a black that is deeper than black, created by layering various colors on top of black), and will feature the author Yana Toboso's beautiful hand-drawing illustrations. It will also display original manga drawings to look back on many famous scenes of the popular episodes from the manga's "Red Butler Arc," "Circus Arc," and "Luxury Liner Arc" to the latest "Blue Cult Arc." In addition, original goods for the exhibition will also be available at the venue.
    "Black Butler Exhibition -Rich Black-" schedule:
  Tokyo: Matsuya Ginza 8th floor - August 13 - 31, 2021

G-fantasy April 2024
𖤐Hello everyone Kuronians𖤐
Today I would like to talk to you about this month's magazine where Yanuzza has brought this beautiful illustration on the cover. At first glance (even I thought so) it might seem like an uninteresting illustration, but if instead of looking at it we observe it, we can notice many interesting details.As I told you some time ago in the stories (IG), since the 15th anniversary the style of the illustrations has changed drastically so that there are two readings, which of course we also find here. On top of that, this illustration seems to be almost an anomaly considering that in 15 years, Yanuzza has never brought an illustration so "explicit" as to refer not only to the actual chapters but above all to the vibe of the work.
Tumblr media
Starting by analysing Sebastian, we can see that his figure assumes a central role, in fact he is the first thing the eye rests on as he is the most imposing figure. Besides this motif, which already tells us a lot, it is interesting that he is not next to 'Ciel' but behind. He is not in a butler's position (butlers always stay a little behind their masters), rather he is anything but, as he is encompassing 'Ciel' to such an extent that the illustration becomes suffocating. Yanuzza has created a sort of private cage solely for 'Ciel' and, if you like, we can say that this pose of Sebastian's very much represents the figure of the guardian demon* (mind you, don't be fooled by the idyllic name) a figure actually present in Satanism.
The more I look at 'Ciel', the more I shiver at his tired posture. It is not simple tiredness, it is something deeper, like a stabbing pain in the chest that prevents you from breathing. This current state of his is intensified even more by the hunched position and, looking closely, you can see that although he is resting his chin on his little hand he occupies less space than expected, as if that tiredness (which personally seems more like depression to me) he does not want to show by withdrawing into himself, which he often does.Precisely for this reason, the other hand, the one holding the handle of the cup, is also very close to his body in an almost uncomfortable position, but one that allows him to 'shut himself in', especially because of the predominant figure of the demon invading his space.The space that Sebastian is occupying does not seem to be accidental, this because in proxemics it is called 'intimate space' a space that we only grant to a small circle of people (such as family) and yet, despite this, the demon hurls itself at him, enclosing him in a sort of prison emphasised by the arms that precisely encompass him, underlining once again the figure of the guardian demon. Moreover, the enclosed position of the human cub might also suggest fear or even discomfort at that inappropriate closeness.
In the first reading we can understand the peculiar as well as the obscure relationship between the two protagonists.
Tumblr media
Among the most well-known meanings of the lily is that it represents purity and chastity, so much so that it is associated with the virgin Mary. As consistent as this may be (more or less, after all, kuro is not a Christian work), I do not think this is the main message Yanuzza wants to communicate to us. Besides that, the flower in question is often used in funerals, so much so that it has officially become Undertaker's flower. Speaking of the Undertaker... of Rich Black's illustration where the headless white horse token is seen, and considering that in this illustration Sebastian is not cutting the stem but the corolla, one would think that this could be the second warning for the Undertaker's imminent demise. After all, it was "Ciel" himself who revealed in the last chapter <this is the time for the revenge match> plus I'm pretty sure Seb is looking forward to clashing with the gravedigger considering what happened on the Campania.
Tumblr media
Another very interesting element, in my opinion, is the scissors. Yanuzza could have drawn Seb with a knife being his favourite tool and yet, he drew a scissor. The latter, unlike the knife, has a different meaning: the knife kills; the scissors divides, separates. I wonder if this isn't a reference to the new season, to the fact that for the first time we had a clear separation with anime, so much so that you had to clarify the beginning of a new era by saying <the anime has nothing to do with me. My work, it's my manga> after all, the scissor puts an end to something, it breaks, and consequently creates a new order.
The most curious element is certainly the rose. I'll be honest, I haven't really understood what it is that he wants to communicate to us, also because I have the impression that in order to understand this element we need more information that we don't have at the moment.Having said that, the element of the red rose has always been more or less present in the work: in the cover of the manga there are brambles, Redmond seems to be the main bearer of this flower even if... a rather relevant character in my opinion could be Baron Kelvin, the very one who in the book of Circus revealed <the most beautiful roses are full of thorns> a phrase of ambiguous beauty that makes me think that he definitely knew more about Vincent. Maybe he'll come back to life? I'd love it, after all he was the only character who was entangled with the chaos of the cult and suspiciously was also an acquaintance of Vincent's.
This is not the first time that Yanuzza has included elements of Shakespeare in kuro, in fact, here I am attaching Shakespeare's poem entitled 'the fairest rose' where inside one can find some very interesting points that certainly refer to 'Ciel'. For the English poet, the rose is not just a flower, but a metaphor: the rose is always a rose, even if it should be called a table. So we are, and always will be, just ourselves, with all our strengths and faults. Perhaps with this sentence Yanuzza has tried to give importance to a child who has been neglected for far too long.

For celebrating Kuroshitsuji 15th Anniversary, Yana Toboso has published new artbook! There is no particular new illustration in the art book (only the cover illustration is the new one) but rather it was quite nostalgic since mostly the art was from Boarding school arc (2012), Green With arc (2014), Book of Circus 2014, and the recent illustration was a collaboration with Cuticle Detective Inaba (2017) And many other old illustrations from Black Butler and the other anime/manga collaborations that I think we've seen mostly in the internet.
Having this in your hand is definitely feels different, its hard to describe it with words but I have been Kuroshitsuji fans for more than 10 years and looking back many illustrations in the past indeed bring back many memories.
As for the line art book, it was the bonus from gfantasy October issued. Actually Yana Toboso said you can color it BUT it was too precious so I think I will leave it as is. Mostly the illustrations are from the colored illustration and cover published in Gfantasy previously.
The 3rd artbook paper is indeed different with the previous artbook, and personally 120 illustrations are not enough for me (lol). Even my impressions after enjoying the illustrations, I need the 4th artbook! Yana Toboso! We need more your Black Butler color Illustrations and books!
The artbook and line art book are personal collections, photo taken by me.

The binding of the 3rd art book commemorating the 15th anniversary of the "Kuroshitsuji" series has been unveiled !! Please take a look at the cover illustration drawn by Yana Toboso in the September issue of G Fantasy released today. The art book is accepting acclaimed reservations at bookstores nationwide and each WEB bookstore. ( x )
Shiny.
The blacks, dark greens and blues tartan resemble the Black Watch’s tartan from the Campbell Clan. ( x )
“WHY IS IT CALLED BLACK WATCH?
There are a few theories as to why the “Watch” was called “Black”:
* Highlanders often demanded extortion payments to spare cattle herds, so the Watch was known for combatting “black mail. “
* As soldiers of an unpopular government, the Watch were considered to be "black hearted" as they had sided with the "enemies of true Highland spirit", however, because the Watch would also call themselves the “Black Watch”, we can’t imagine this to be true
* The designation came from the Black Cockade of the House of Hanover (as opposed to the White Cockade of the Jacobites)
* Another notion is that the name is simply derived from the dark colour of the tartan
* The Companies’ main role was to "watch" over the highlands
Tumblr media
Anyway, my hunch is Yana T has combined Sebastian and Ciel’s epithets together. Black (Butler) and Watch (Dog). Like a portmanteau.
