I gave him a ponytail (idk i wanted to, got inspired by a doodle made by @wisteriaaa)

BLUE REEF COOKIE LORE

Blue Reef Cookie was a merman once, until Sea Witch Cookie gave him a potion to give him the power to breath on land, and gain some legs, and he experiences the whole land part of Earthbread.

Blue Reef Cookie used to be apart of a different pirate crew in House Barnacle, where he was with a captain named Captain Fishhook Cookie, and he, and his crew is most wanted for many robbery crimes, and Blue Reef Cookie didn't want to commit these robberies, but did them anyway thanks to one of the main rules "Never decline", one day was that he was at the Vanilla Kingdom, and while they were stealing from many markets, Blue Reef Cookie met Strawberry Tart Cookie, and they became friends, that was until some security Wafflebots came to confront the crew, as well as Blue Reef Cookie, who was frustrated, and sad, because he couldn't get to talk to the princess a little more.

One night, he snuck out of House Barnacle, just to see Strawberry Tart Cookie, the talk went well, until Captain Fishhook Cookie came in a ruined the talk by taking him back to House Barnacle, just to scold him, and threaten him later on, after that, thats where Blue Reef Cookie became increasingly quiet...

Before they set sail, Blue Reef Cookie fell into the Duskgloom's waters, causing his whole appearance to change, with a smile, he swam back up, and got back out of the ship with a smile, attacking Captain Fishhook Cookie's crew, as he eliminated each and every one brutally, he got close to the captain with one thing to say...

"You have no idea what you got me into.. Captain.."

After the whole ordeal, he left House Barnacle behind, and decided to head to House Caviar, to be as the Sailor of the Salty Sharks, and an honored first mate of Captain Caviar Cookie.

When they got to the Duskgloom Sea that night, Black Pearl Cookie makes her next encounter with a random ship, after she got rid of those hollow whales, she recognize the sailor she saw in the Duskgloom waters before joining the Salty Sharks, her only thought was..

"My cousin..?"

STAGHORN CORAL COOKIE LORE

Staghorn Coral Cookie was a rebellious teen in an unspecified neighborhood, they would use sharp weapons to throw at wooden planks like a sport, which one of the neighbors were worried about, due to them getting hurt, but since Staghorn Coral Cookie was very much capable of taking care of themselves after getting slight cuts on them, and careful with knives, whether it be for sporting, or cooking, they know how to not aim it at people, they did have good skills after all.

That one night, they were cutting up some fruits for their cake, they heard a noise from the other room, and they went to investigate, they saw a robber in their house that just broke in, and they would NEVER go down without a fight, so they used their knife to fight off the robber, it took a few couple of wounds to stop the robber, until they finally got him on the ground, the robber then took the knife, and left a fresh cut on Staghorn Coral Cookie's eye, and threw it at the wall, then left.

After the incident that happened last night, Staghorn Coral Cookie woke up in their neighbor's house, who was named Lace Coral Cookie, and she patched them up, which they were grateful, then after that, they heard the news that the robber was rightfully arrested for trespassing, and attempted assault, and Lace Coral Cookie would let Staghorn Coral Cookie stay at her house for a while.

One month later...

Lace Coral Cookie, and Staghorn Coral Cookie made it to the Crème Republic, and they made a few friends, and meet Consul Clotted Cream Cookie as well, and lastly, Lace Coral Cookie, and Staghorn Coral Cookie made their way to House Caviar, to meet the almighty Captain Caviar Cookie, where they told them about the incident that happened in the neighborhood they used to live in, and how they fought back, Captain Caviar Cookie felt bad, but also proud of Staghorn Coral Cookie's bravery, so he promoted, not just them, but also Lace Coral Cookie to be apart of the Salty Sharks.

First, when my therapist of all people told me that I am doing well at university since I never failed an exam despite studying a difficult field. It made me feel proud because before that I only focused on how much I struggled. And the second one, when a certain someone asked me if they can get my art as a tattoo 👀🙈

🐰 What do you think says the most about a person? - I am not good at reading people, but I think you can tell quite a lot from how a person treats animals, especially cats. Will they mostly care about not getting fur all over them, will they play with the animal and show some feelings, will they maybe take a photo to show to their loved ones? I find that fairly interesting.

Hiking Journal: The West Coast Trail

Day IV: The Tideshelf Tango

August 31

Walbran Creek to Cribs Creek

Blisters and Bliss calls walking along the shoreline a "Beach Boogie." I prefer the Tideshelf Tango. Sand is certainly nicer to walk than the inland forest trails— no mud, no roots, and straight wide bays means travelling at a multiple of the speed of the inland route. But sand shifts, while tidal flats— what a great way to walk up the coast!

Flat as a sidewalk, holding only sheets of water as shallow as bootsoles. Shale layers and barnacles keep the surface grippy when wet, and in the fissures of deeper tidewater, crabs skitter and minnows dart among anemone that range in size from dimes to dinner plates.

Leaving camp we had to wade Walbran Creek to reach our beach route. The sun was already shining hot on the open sand. Dressed down to shorts, water shoes, and a light collared sun shirt, there was a tropical, piratical feel to the creek crossing and subsequent tideshelf tango around tree-topped flowerpot headlands.

At Bonilla Point there’s a lovely campsite and waterfall pool where I stripped to shorts and took a cool shower in the falls.

Carmanah Point campground is pretty too. F—— and S——- stopped there as we pressed on. Carmanah Point Lighthouse watches over the wide arc of white sand here. Sun glittered off of perfectly curling waves.

The remains of Nytom are an interesting spot to stop for lunch. Peter Nytom (renamed Knighton at residential school) married Monique, a white Montrealer, in the late 80s, and the couple moved back to the traditional home of Peter's family in 1991. On maps the area beneath Carmanah Point along this beach is Ditidaht First Nation, but Peter asserted total independence when he and Monique built their little shack below the sweeping lighthouse beam. Peter called their land Quabadiwa. Hikers enjoying their hospitality called it Chez Monique. The shack grew into an unregulated restaurant, serving burgers to hungry trekkers. The establishment survived Monique's death but not Peter's. After his boat capsized on a supply run, Sandi Knighton maintained the restaurant part-time under the new name "Nytom"— increasingly part-time, with openings becoming rarer and rarer. There were signs of life when we stopped. The fence was aromatic fresh-cut cedar. Woodwork and beadmaking in process was visible on the burger stand counter. But we saw and heard not a peep of current human life.

Just past Nytom the trail climbs steeply and briefly up a tight notch into the clifftop Carmanah rainforest, home of famous skyscraper Sitka Spruce.

Carmanah is also a former Victoria-based folk-rock band (playing as Miina these days I think.)

Let's go walking through the forest / let's go waltzing with the trees

And that makes me think, what would bands named for other points along the trail sound like? Mostly they'd be pretty similar to Carmanah. Cullite, Walbran, Nitinaht, and so on. Bonilla sounds like bubblegum pop. Logan Creek and Owen Point sound like Nashville pop-country singers. Anything with too much of that west-coast ts root wouldn't play well in the States I think, so Tsusiat and Tsocowis may be out. Black River would be soulsy and Coal Creek would be gritty Appalachian bluegrass. Camper Bay might be right up by alley but I think may risk sounding too much like what people who don't like the Lumineers think the Lumineers sound like. If it was spelled as Camper Bae it'd be right out. Thrasher Cove, of course, would be pirate metal.

Emerging from the forest we visited the 1891 lighthouse grounds. Sadly this place is being automated by the Coast Guard overlords, so there will be no more fresh-baked cookies as we've heard mentioned. Pity, I think I could make a good lighthouse keeper. The Keeper we met seemed tired of having to deal with tourists, but did set up a telescope for us to peer closer at the sea lion colony hauled out on an offshore rock. She also confirmed that the tides were okay for us to return to the beach down the steep stairs to the north. Beneath the lighthouse tower, a "Frankenwhale" skeleton is made up of the washed-in bones of different species. A huge humpback (?) skull looks a bit funny on the disproportional orca body.

The pockmarked tideshelf north of Carmanah is a lunar landscape. It's not far from there to Cribs Creek and the camps. This may have been my favourite camp. It was still wonderfully warm, and we got set up with lots of daylight to spare. The Cribs themselves are a ridge of gently sloped rocks sheltering a wide pool of tidewater where seabirds congregate by the hundreds for a crabmeat feast. We would have our own feast at the Nitinaht Narrows Crabshack the next day.

My mood was much improved from the day before as I climbed onto the Cribs to watch the sun set at last totally uninhibited into the endless Pacific horizon. I waited for a green flash I never saw. I'll keep waiting.

tries so so hard to get you to wear a super cheesy couples costume with him. honestly, his ideas range from cheesy (like him being cheese and you being a mouse) to something a bit classic and sexier (like morticia and gomez, or adam and eve). brings up the idea of you being a wall socket and him being the plug — clarifies that he was joking when you shoot the idea down (he wasn't).

SOOBIN

deeply considers the both of you dressing up as royalty for halloween. or, you're someone highly important and he's your body guard. for him, it’s just something about you being the ultimate star of the show and him playing that often secondary, protective role.

oh baby is taking this very seriously. to gyu, it's either go big or go home. on the same hand, he proposed the idea of being toy story characters but couldn't decide if he wanted to be woody or buzz (so the idea was soon thrown away). probably says screw the couples costume and does a solo one as idk, ben 10 or something.

Voltron Humans are Weird 6/?

The Paladins had once again won an intense battle. It had been on the planet Cygoth, which was home to a group of humanoids. The Cygi, as they were called, had skin in shades of pale pinks and purples and blues. Their heads were like those of bald humans, but with upside down ears and eyes like felines. Instead of five fingers and five toes, the Cygi had four fingers and six toes, to aid them in their strange environment, along with bug-like wings that hid under hard green and yellow shells.

Said environment was one with 'extreme weather conditions' and 'toxic' rain. The Cygi lived in caves that were on a large cliffside. Since the elements often got within the rocks and all the animals were terrestrial and highly territorial, the aliens would hang upside down and crawl across the ceilings like spiders. They also collected rare minerals that grew down to build their homes and helped them grow food in their strange way of living.

It was these minerals that the Galra wanted. Stronger than 98.97% of all other metals or rocks, they could be used to create impenetrable ships and armor. The Cygi had called Voltron to Cygoth to aid them in protecting their resources and freedom. After they had succeeded, and it became clear that the team only wanted to help, no reward necessary, the leader of the Cygi offered an alliance. New armor and some upgrades for the Paladins and Castle, an increased amount of trade for the aliens, and a plethora of allies for both because of their union.

The talks were boring, and the four younger Paladins found themselves quickly becoming inattentive. Lance got them excused and Pidge ran straight to the edge of the central cave, ignoring how the Cygi were suddenly watching them keenly. It was likely to avoid the Terrans getting attacked by the fauna or killed by the 'toxic' rain that was cascading down just outside. A device was pulled from the depths of the Green Paladin's armor to scan the substance pouring from the atmosphere, and they all peered over the girl's shoulder tensely.

The screen lit up in green.

"HECK YEAH!" Keith shouted, his voice echoing loudly against the stone walls. "Nontoxic!"

"C'mon, Paladudes!" Lance waved his hand at the others in a beckoning motion. "It's time to explore this world and turn Shiro's hair whiter than before!"

The kids dashed forward towards the more organic part of the planet's surface, but paused and turned at the sound of buzzing.

A large group of Cygi were heading straight for the humans, frantic expressions and furiously beating wings drawing the Paladins' attention. It seemed that the team's newest allies were more knowledgeable about their intentions, and were attempting to avoid what they assumed was a dangerous situation.

The teens were not about to let that happen.

"BREAK FOR IT!" Hunk screamed, and there was no way that Shiro and Allura didn't hear that. They only had a few minutes before they would be caught in their escape. The humans dashed for the entrance, and Keith was definitely gonna make it. Pidge wasn't, and Hunk was a coin toss, so Lance took action. The self-sacrificing idiot.

The Blue Paladin grabbed his smaller friend and threw her at his bro.

"CATCH!" The cook caught the child easily, still sprinting to freedom. But the action left Lance behind the herd and much closer to the Cygi. It became obvious how close when his feet left the ground.

"What the flippity floppity flapjack‽ WOAH!" The flying aliens were swift to bring the Terran over to the suspended platform where Shiro, Allura, and all the diplomats were staring down from. It was from there that the kids had originally climbed down the rungs of the strange ladder to get to the floor. "Ah, you lily-livered sons of witches! You snackers! Oh, tick-tack snick-snack frick-frack paddlywack! My father will hear about this, you barnacle-covered Caprisun knock-offs! I'll steal your kneecaps and eat your curtains! You moldy walnuts!" He continued spouting off insults as he was carried over to his leaders, smiling slightly at the look of exasperation on Shiro's face. His words stopped the moment his feet hit the mioxite platform, smile growing exponentially.

"Lance, what were you guys doing?" The older man didn't let Allura speak, taking over the conversation immediately.

"The rain isn't toxic for us, so we were gonna explore. I gotta join the others soon."

"No, you don't gotta."

"I do gotta."

"Why?"

"You want Keith and Pidge alone in unknown territory with just Hunk as their voice of reason?"

"You definitely gotta."

"Shiro, Lance, what is going on?" Allura finally managed to interject. The humans turned towards the Altean, both confused. Lance had just said that he and the others were going to explore Cygoth.

"What d'you mean, princess?"

"What code was Lance speaking?"

"Code? What co- oh." The Black Paladin's face lit up in realization. "She meant the curses. Lance, explain."

"I was cussing without swear words."

"What?"

"I was spouting profanities without ever using actual words that are considered profane. For instance." The boy faced his fellow Terran once more. "Let me strawberries and cream go before I rocky road your face, you useless paperclip."

"Where's that from?"

"Ice cream flavors with the classic inanimate objects with no function. From Tumblr."

"What is ice cream? Is it more... omnivore things?" Allura seemed to be scared she might have to hear more about the meat-eating habits of humans.

"Nah, don't worry, princess," Lance assured her. "Ice cream is a chilled treat back home. We found out that there's many animals we can safely farm for their milk. When done correctly, it doesn't harm the animals, and we can process the milk for consumption. Process the milk properly, and then you can get ice cream. It comes in many flavors."

"Such as?"

"Strawberries and cream, and rocky road, to name some."

"Are any of those poisonous?"

"I think lactose might be, which is in a good portion of milk, and some nuts are, and definitely chocolate. So, to animals, yeah, most ice cream is toxic, but not always enough to do more than a stomachache."

"Princess, I can take over explaining, but Lance has to go make sure none of the others get into trouble."

The Blue Paladin took that as his cue to leave, climbing down the ladder once more and bolting back to the entrance. In moments, he had disappeared from view, joining his fellow humans outside the caves. Shiro watched him go, internally wishing he could join them.

But they had once again caused a situation that needed explaining, and Lance was needed to prevent an actual disaster from happening, so Shiro had to do damage control solo this time. That's what he got for letting four teenagers kidnap him back into space.

If a human seems to be speaking in code, yet other humans seem to understand them, even on a basic level, ask if they are speaking in 'slang'. This is a Terran term that encompasses many variations of speaking. Much like the difference in linguistics between Blue and Green Zithians, humans will likely have very different slang depending on where they spent their time. A place called Tumbler often fosters a more complex version, whereas Insta Gram has a simpler code.

Humans might invent their own slang in order to packbond properly with one another. Two groups of Terrans hailing from the same locations may have entirely different lexicons due to the change that each team may make. Some individuals may even know more than two versions of slang, in order to establish better relations with their fellow humans. There is very little evidence of what requirements are needed to include learning more than one variation of slang. An example of this would best be shown by the following interaction:

Terran Blue, addressing Terran Yellow: Then he just yeeted it at me, as though I was gonna sit there like a soggy popsicle.

Terran Yellow, responding: That doesn't explain why you turned him into an ice cube.

Terran Green, addressing Terran Blue: "Blue", what was the 411 on those rocket launchers?

Terran Blue, responding: The main man blew a gasket. Didn't make it far, but managed to nab a couple of the suckers.

Terran Yellow, addressing Terran Green: You throw a glitter bomb down the chutes and I'll cop all the cookies.

Terran Green, responding: Do it and you'll lose your kneecaps.

In the above interaction, it was explained that Terran Blue and Terran Yellow were discussing an instance where an object was hurled towards Terran Blue's head. He dodged the object and used a weapon to freeze his opponent in a section of ice. Terran Green was inquiring about a mission and the weapons that were supposed to be gained if it succeeded. Terran Blue informed of the partial success they achieved, after which Terran Yellow warned Terran Green to not perform certain playful acts. Terran Green responded with a more intimidating warning.

However, as seen, there were many different instances of slang usage. All three of the humans used at least two versions, yet they all hold very different positions. Terran Green is a scientist, Terran Yellow is (assumed to be) a chef, and Terran Blue is (assumed to be) a diplomat. Their needs for their positions are greatly varied, leading to confusion as to the education of humans.

In all events of slang use, please proceed with great caution. A greater percentage of this subject is unknown than the previous logs. Refrain from attempting the replication of slang unless the code has been explained to you by a Terran. Humans have not shown much aggression yet, but they may do so if provoked on an emotional level.

Richie grit his teeth as he watched the two of them dance.

The way the man’s hands rested on Eddie’s hips and how Eddie leaned back into the guy with a small smile, like he hadn’t just met the guy an hour ago. Richie eyes watched like a hawk as the douche Eddie was dancing with drifted up, moving under that thin black t-shirt Eddie had showed up in and he saw red as the man stroked Eddie’s bare stomach.

“That mother fuck-“ Richie moved to get up, but stopped when he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to glare at Bev. “What?”

“You better let Eddie be.”

“I’m just going to the bathroom. Chill out.”

By Bev’s glare Richie could tell she didn’t appreciate the attitude, but she let him go and instead of making his way over to Eddie and the barnacle he had attached to his back, he switched his target to the bathroom like he’d said. As he moved he did his best not to look at Eddie, ducking through the crowd on the dance floor and slipping past the door with a sigh as the music grew muffled and he felt like his thoughts were his own again.

He hated this.

Trying to be friends with the guy you loved with all your heart after you smashed his heart into a million pieces.

“Fuck.” Richie groaned as he moved over to the sinks, turning the faucet on and pulling off his glasses. The cold water felt good on his heated face, but it didn’t help with how shitty he felt and he looked up at his blurry reflection in the mirror. Water dripping down his chin and his eyes still had those stupid bags under them from all the wonderful nonsleep he was getting. 

He knew he had to look bad when Eddie actually expressed concern about them the other day.

Richie rubbed his hands over his face roughly and sighed. He was just torturing himself by coming tonight and he had to be at his second job early tomorrow morning and then practice his stand-up routine before going to work at Joe’s restaurant.

Fuck he was exhausted and just so done.

That’s when he heard the door open, an all too familiar laugh which was cut short and Richie reached for his glasses, slipping them on and turning around. The sight that greeted him made his heart seize up in pain and then his body went numb, feeling only emptiness as he looked over at Eddie.

Eddie who looked like he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar while having a large beefed up idiot wrapped all around him and kissing his neck.

“S-Sorry.” Eddie stuttered. “We didn’t think- we thought no one was in here.”

All Richie could do was glance around the bathroom and gave a lackluster shrug. “Well, you’ll have it to yourself in a bit. I was just heading out.”

“Wait-“ Eddie said as Richie made you move past them, the guy on Eddie seeming to get a little annoyed that Eddie was prolonging what they had obviously come in there to do. “You’re leaving? I thought we were staying out to celebrate Bill’s book being published.”

Richie felt a stab of guilt at that. Bill has finally found a publisher and the the night was supposed to be all about him, but Richie couldn’t do it. He gave another shrug glancing back and forth between Eddie and his irritated stranger friend. “I’ll make it up to him later, I have a shift in a few hours so I sho-“

“Wait, a morning shift?” Eddie questioned and then there was that frown again. “You’re still working at the parking garage? I thought you said you’d quit that since Grey treats you like shit.”

“Yeah well, you know I lie.”

Richie winced at the absolute raw hurt in Eddie’s eyes before his schooled his features to become emotionless and Eddie turned back to the idiot. Richie glanced away when Eddie reached up and wound his arms around the guy’s neck, turning the man’s attention back on him. “Have you met Richie? He used to be my boyfriend before he decided that I was too suffocating.”

“That isn’t what I said.” Richie bit out, knowing he had no room to argue on this but that wasn’t what he’d said and he had to say it. “I-“

“Oh no, that’s right.” Eddie interrupted, voice dripping with venom. “You just said that I was acting like my mom.”

That was true and Richie regretted it ever since the words had left his mouth.

“Eddie-“

Eddie just rolled his eyes and turned back to the other man, pulling him close so they stood flush against one another and the guy’s hands when to grab Eddie’s ass. “Come on.”

Richie watched as they started to move towards the stalls, the guy attaching his mouth to Eddie’s neck and undoubtedly leaving marks.

Richie’s nostrils flared. 

Eddie hated getting hickies on his neck because it was harder to cover up, Eddie hated the idea of doing it in public places because he didn’t know what germs could be around and even before they got together Eddie had never been the kind for a one night stand.

Richie had spun out of control while they were together and now it was Eddie’s turn and Richie had been too self involved in his own self pity to notice. When he saw the guy back Eddie into a wall roughly and Eddie’s since of pain he’d had it.

He pushed the guy out of the way and grabbed Eddie by the arm and started dragging him out of the bathroom. They only made it to the quieter lobby before Eddie was finally able to rip his arm out of Richie’s grip and he quickly pushed Richie in the chest making Richie stumble back a bit.

“What the fuck, Richie!” Eddie yelled.

“He was hurting you!”

“Oh please.” Eddie groaned, eyes rolling skyward. “You’re just jealous.”

“No shit!” Richie yelled and Eddie jumped as the loud confession he probably hadn’t been expecting. Richie took a few steps closer, glad when Eddie didn’t step back. “No fucking shit, Eddie! Yeah I’m jealous! We broke up only two months ago! You think I can stop loving you in that amount of time?”

Eddie had to look away at those words.

“Of course I’m going to be jealous when you fling yourself at some random guy and let him do things to you that you don’t like.” Richie was close enough that he could just lean down and kiss Eddie without barely moving his head. “I hate the idea of someone else touching you, hate that I messed up so fucking bad that I won’t ever be able to touch you myself again, and I fucking hate seeing you start falling apart because your hurting.”

Eddie’s eyes were so wide and so brown and when Richie leaned in a little further he saw the way Eddie’s eyelashes fluttered and how his gaze traveled to Richie’s mouth. Oh god, Eddie…

“I hate that I hurt the most important person to me in the world.”

The touch of their lips was so soft, almost like their first kiss all over again, hesitant and scared and it made Richie want to cry at how much he had missed this. He tilted his head ready to deepen the kiss when he was shoved back roughly, Eddie looking like he was on the verge of a serious panic attack.

“Eds-“

Eddie quickly shook his head. “No, I can’t do this again. I can’t love you again only to be told my love is too much.”

“Eddie-“ Richie cried, his voice cracking a little and his heart sank when Eddie shook his head.

“I can’t do it, Richie. I can’t.”

Damencio’s Best of 2020

Est-il nécessaire de rentrer dans les détails pour énumérer tous les événements surnaturels qui sont apparus pour cette année 2020? Ce contexte si particulier n’a semble t-il pas poussé les pointures du rap américain à se remettre en question. Loin de là.

Le rap américain grand public continue sa chute inexorable vers une médiocrité annoncée. Les sorties des grosses pointures ont été affligeantes pour la plupart. Personne pour sauver l’autre. Vendu comme là où se trouve l’innovation dans la musique, le rap américain a semble t-il perdu de sa magie depuis trop longtemps. Est-ce dû à l’avènement de l’ère streaming qui poussent les rappeurs à sortir des albums, edition deluxe ou format plus court jusqu’à perdre la raison? Le streaming a forcément une part non négligeable dans cette nouvelle manière d’apprécier en apparence la musique. Le vendredi soir est devenu un chemin de croix pour l’auditeur qui ne sait plus où donner de la tête avec toutes ces sorties. Le plaisir musical est remplacé par un devoir qui doit être rendu une heure après l’écoute pour donner rapidement son avis sur les réseaux sociaux. Sommes-nous proches d’atteindre un phénomène proche de la Peak TV (accroissement exponentiel de la production de séries) mais pour la musique?

La pandémie qui s’est abattue sur le monde n’a pas arrangé les affaires du rap. Reports d’albums des grosses pointures pour 2021 (même l’intouchable Drake a choisi de reporter ses plans pour l’année prochaine), absence totale de tournées extrêmement lucratives depuis des mois et des pertes monstres qui ont poussé les rappeurs à un peu plus vendre leur âme au streaming, seule source revenue dans ce schéma délicat pour les rappeurs.

Et si le rap, berceau de l’innovation musicale depuis des décennies était devenu la musique actuelle et plus celle du futur? Le rap est-il devenu la musique populaire aseptisée de notre temps? L’irrévérence légendaire rangée définitivement au placard pour des calculs permanents sur les ventes de tel ou tel rappeur? L’avenir prochain confirmera probablement ce destin funeste.

Si facile d’accès, ce genre musical est omniprésent sur tous les canaux possibles en 2020. La qualité quant à elle se fait de plus en plus rare. Elle doit être désormais recherchée comme dans une mine d’or. Le salut du rap vient comme à son habitude du rap régional plus ou moins en bonne santé. Detroit, scène majeure du rap régional continue à dominer son monde, jusqu’à truster les charts américains avec “Whole Lotta Choppas” de Sada Baby. Cependant ce succès ne peut pas occulter cette contamination du streaming plus en plus prégnante même dans ces lointaines contrées.

La sortie de prison presque tombée du ciel de DrakeO The Ruler, rappeur d’exception, originaire de Los Angeles est une excellente nouvelle pour le rap. Considéré comme le leader de la nouvelle scène californienne, DrakeO a semble t-il une envie pressante de rattraper le temps perdu. Depuis sa sortie début novembre, le Californien a déjà sorti un projet et la liste s’allonge chaque jour. Promis à un avenir brillant, le rappeur a rencontré sur son chemin la police de Los Angeles prête à tout pour l’enfermer. Il doit sa liberté uniquement à la défaite électorale de Jackie Lacey, procureure du comté de Los Angeles en novembre dernier. Pendant son incarcération, DrakeO a trouvé le moyen de sortir de l’un des projets de l’année. Les voix enregistrées intégralement en prison et collectées par le producteur californien JoogSzn ont permis l’existence de ce désormais classique “Thank You For Using GTL” qui fera sans aucun doute date pour le processus unique d’enregistrement.

Pour les autres genres musicaux, le R&B se porte à merveille. Après avoir connu une mini-crise au début des années 2010, le R&B continue de nous surprendre, arrive à changer de forme pour donner une musique toujours aussi passionnante à suivre. On peut également utiliser cet argument pour le jazz. Annoncé comme musique morte depuis des années, le jazz renaît grâce à une nouvelle génération qui n’hésite plus à mélanger les genres. La recette est la même. Prendre des risques inconsidérés (écoutez Stranger Than Fiction de Moses Boyd) pour donner une musique vivante. Il est bluffant de voir à quel point le jazz arrive toujours à survivre à travers le temps. L’Angleterre a une part importante dans ce renouvellement. La nouvelle génération composée en grande partie de musiciens d’origine afro-caribéenne a donné d’excellents albums (Wu Hen de Kamaal Williams et Shabaka And The Ancestors entre autres) et a surtout réussi à réintroduire le jazz dans les grands médias, chose impensable il y a 10 ans.

La House, autre musique qui a connu ces moments de gloire au milieu des années 90, utilise ce même procédé pour étonnamment nous surprendre en 2020. La House a toujours été imprégnée de jazz et vice versa. Pour cette raison, Byron The Aquarius, originaire d’Alabama est définitivement l’un des artistes de l’année. Il ajoute d’autres influences qui font la différence (notamment le rap et l’Atlanta Bass). Cet artiste ultra productif a délivré un nombre incalculable de projets pour cette année et, sacrée prouesse, sont tous différents. Il a également réalisé un rêve, sortir un (formidable) album de jazz (Ambrosia) qui prouve que les ponts entre genres musicaux sont toujours aussi fonctionnels et permettent de faire exister une musique hybride et annoncent un nouveau souffle pour la House dans les prochaines années

Il était impensable de conclure ce bilan pour cette année 2020 sans évoquer la sidérante édition deluxe de Sign O’ Times de Prince, le double opus mythique du chanteur/guitariste/batteur... disparu il y a 4 ans. Après plusieurs supers éditions deluxe dont la franchement décevante de Purple Rain et la très bonne de 1999, Le Prince Estate a décidé les perles présentes depuis trop longtemps dans le vault de Paisley Park. Pas moins de 45 “inédits” (une dizaine dans le lot sont réellement de vrais inédits) peuvent être désormais écoutés et restent destinés principalement aux fans hardcores du chanteur. Répartis sur 13 vinyles (!), ces 92 titres qui composent cette édition super deluxe feront forcément date. Après une écoute approfondie de cette merveille, un constat se présente. Et si cette période bénie de Prince était finalement le futur de la musique en 2020? Il est assez cocasse de voir les jeunes artistes innovants d’avoir exactement la même approche musicale que le Kid de Minneapolis il y a 17 ans.

Cette sortie de Prince est un cadeau inestimable pour les auditeurs mais inévitablement un questionnement sur l’avenir de la musique désormais à la merci des géants du streaming, prêts à imposer leur vision mercantile aux artistes. Vendre son âme mais à quel prix?

Here she is, the life size humpback I painted for Richnerstutz and Zurich Zoo. For some more info on this monstrous project, see my previous post on the subject. In full view one can appreciate the beautiful colouration that adorns many a humpback on the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike their northern cousins, which tend to be mostly black with white pectoral fins, southern humpbacks often have extensive white markings that stretch up from their belly all along their flanks, as well as white eye patches. In extremely light individuals the eye patch is connected to the shoulder marking, and the white sides may almost meet on their back. Nevertheless the upper side of their pectoral finds tends to be black, while the underside is white.

Added are some close ups at full size, showing part of the rostrum with whiskers atop every tubercle, barnacle scars and dozens of living examples; a close up of the sides dotted with scars of healed cookie-cutter shark bites; and a fluke which bears the marks of not only barnacles and sharks, but the sharp teeth of killer whales too. And lastly, once more the eye and her little black-stained ear opening.

“...aura”

Besides the caregiving for an elder dream. There was this. I was burning the last of my possessions. The things that like barnacles have stuck to me. They burned. My books manuscripts burned. They curled turned to ash blew away. These, and the trinkets I've carried with me through my life. They twisted bubbled melted. Became black smoke and vanished in the bright coals.

My parents were there. Well, their shadows were. Yeah, it was them. Why, I don't know. They didn't speak they never do. 

So I fed the fire all I still had. I cleansed myself of my worldly parts. I just did that's all. It was time. On impulse I shoved my hand into the fire. ...don't ask. It was cold. Burning ice. Dante wrote that hell is a cold place. The greater the sins the lower, and colder you go. Is this where my stuff went?  

Being mortal we're not so lucky. Me you, all mortals. We vanish. Virus's great oaks lady bugs all of us go back to where we came from. Oblivion. The background aura of eternity...or at least that's how it looks. 

On the other hand there's them shadows of folks passed on. Every family has a story every person an experience. No idea how that works or why. Hell of a ride. 

Either way when you do good it's for its own sake. It 'is' its own reward like fortune cookies tell us. You none of us has an account in paradise where our good deeds accrue interest. We're spiritual paupers. I think we're supposed to be. So just be kind, and generous as best you can. Not for reward, but because we should.

Monster World Dream

i told myself i wasn’t going to wake up at 4 AM if I didn’t have to anymore but I just had the weirdest fucking dream and I need to write it down somewhere before I forget because it was some Studio Ghibli shit and it was god damn terrifying. I don’t know if the single chocolate chip cookie I had before bed was enough to cause this or if my brain has just been under so much stress lately it finally just went “fuck you, suffer” but LORD. This has some storytelling tropes that @cohobbitation knows fucking terrifies me too.

so the premise of everything was that for some reason in the human world it was raining near constantly and there was so much water that the world, as a whole I shit you not, was becoming more and more flooded out and it was assumed no one knew as to why. Now I say “human world” because there was also a “monster world” that humans just used to make up scary monster stories to make children behave but they were mostly unaware that these things they would end up telling as stories would eventually manifest themselves into a new monster over time to populate said world.There were also stories of people that were half monster, half human that could walk between the worlds freely but as a human you’d never know because they were very good at making themselves look like everyone else to blend in. That’s what I was but I had run away from the monster world because it’s miserable and terrifying there and had been passing as a normal human for a long time because I didn’t want to be part of the issues the monster world caused for the humans. Also, notably, being a hybrid in the monster world was just as bad because you weren’t seen as a “true monster” and were often considered a sub-race, forced into slave labor or servitude of some pure bred monster, which is why many hybrids left to hide amongst the humans.

I was going to some odd school and it was the lunch period, so we were all sat up on the rooftop watching the waters as it slowly consumed everything. By now the humans had created some methods to try and fight or avoid the flood waters, like building high walkways made of extremely sturdy metal to get to and from places or water proof structures that were meant to eventually be able to be submerged because no one knew if this would ever stop and the humans were getting ready to have to deal with having an entirely water planet. However it was while we were up there, talking and eating, that we started to notice that the waters were receding. Sometimes this happened and the flood waters would disappear for maybe an hour while it continued to rain but after some time they would come back to exactly how they would be. Liquids did not like to follow the laws of physics in this dream world, nor did they like to always be in the same place.

Now, with waters like this both good and bad things were often kicked up and left behind when they’d go away. Little waterlogged treasures or, in my unfortunate case, bodies. There would always be the body of some poor soul that would be there waiting, and while many people used the time the water was gone to go down to ground level and scavenge I did not like to because I always ended up finding the nightmare fuel. Today I decided I would go down with my friends because maybe it wasn’t so bad but just as we were getting ready to go back inside and go out some of the school bullies cut me off from the door, taunting me by saying “don’t look now but I think you’ve found something” and pointing towards the water where there was, in fact, a really pale naked dead woman just floating on by before something drug her beneath the water again. They laughed and slammed the door in my face, locking it too, so I had to take the long way down.

By the time I got to the soggy wet ground the waters were just a trickle, there was no body, and my friends had already wandered off to do their own thing so I followed suit and started to look for stuff. As I wandered I started to notice these long black strands of hair were being pushed towards me from somewhere and started to clump around my feet, prompting me to try and find the source LIKE AN IDIOT and as I came up to this weird stairway like structure where it seemed to be getting the worst one of my teachers (who was wearing the face of someone from my old job, one of the really cool coaches I worked with) came up behind me and scared the shit out of me. He wanted to know why I was sneaking around like I was, being all careful and ready for the jumpscare that eventually came from someone else, and by the time I had looked over to tell him I was trying to find someone the hair leading me to that spot was gone and the stairs no longer had that edge-of-your-seat feeling of suspense to them. Not seeing anything he just shrugged and said “Well I found something cool, come follow me so I can show you” and we departed.

After following him some way to a thing that felt more like an abandoned parking structure than anything and we were going downstairs instead of upstairs and this was a concern because the waters would be back soon. Being the half hybrid thing I also started to get this feeling of “we shouldn’t be here” because I recognized we were coming up on one of those liminal spaces where the worlds overlapped each other and made it very easy for monsters of hybrids to appear. As we were going downwards I tried to explain to him that maybe it was a bad idea to be there but he didn’t listen and before I got really frustrated with him we happened to pass by the ONE car in the entire building (it was my IRL car? Somehow?) and these three guys standing around it. They weren’t trying to break in or anything they were legitimately just standing there trying to figure out how this car hadn’t been washed away in some of the initial flooding because it was covered in algae and barnacles and other things to indicate extended submersion and while I was asking them what they were doing Teacher Guy wandered off again.

That sense of dread was really growing so I went to follow him again down into these wide tunnels  but just as he was turning a corner I stopped because I realized we had fully passed into the monster world now, which had made me lose my all human appearance. I had weird bird features on my face but the most noticeable bit were my legs and feet, which were bird feet from the knee down that had three taloned toes on the front and one on the back ankle bit. The exact moment the worlds passed through one another forced me to reveal my true self and I knew we were both in a lot of trouble now.

I ran to try and catch up to where Teacher Guy had gone but as I came up on the corner he had turned I started to hear these noises of pain and wet, crunching sounds and the shadows that were cast up on the wall I could see showed me that the “Guardians” had gotten to him.

These Guardians have been some of the most terrifying things I have ever dreamed up, not because of how they looked but because of how they kill someone. Basically, they looked like oversized tall terracotta pots with lids that were very innocent looking at first but if you were a trespasser then suddenly they’d have these two mile long tongue-arms that would come out from just under the lid, wrap around a victim and squeeze all the blood and guts out of them like a sponge before shoving the mangled body into them to digest. Dream me was terrified of these things and I don’t blame dream me for that fear at all.

Just before I could turn around to go back the way I came before the Guardians found me too my watch alarm that I had set to let me know when to return to a safe place to avoid the waters went off, alerting the Guardians just around the corner that someone else was there. I bolted up a nearby emergency staircase as I heard the clanking of angry pots coming after me (they moved by cartoonishly bouncing after people, how that didn’t break them I don’t know) because thankfully they couldn’t go upstairs but their tongue-arms followed me up most of the staircase.

Eventually the Guardians couldn’t chase me anymore but I reached a part of the stairs that was going to have to force me to run by more to get to this pipe I wanted to crawl up that would lead to some upper walkways of the monster world area where I thought I would be safe. I couldn’t go back to the human world with the rains starting to pick up because whatever liminal space I popped out of was going to put me miles underwater and I wasn’t about to deal with that so I thought maybe I could wait it out somehow.

But I had to run by eight Guardians that I know would trigger the minute I got anywhere near them but they can’t climb up pipes so I thought that was my best bet. Steeling myself I eventually darted to the other side of that small room and lept onto the pipe bolted to the wall, starting to climb up it as fast as possible. All the Guardians were pissed off down below, angrily and loudly hopping up and down while their tongue-arms tried to catch up to me. I out climbed the appendages to the walkways I wanted to be on and started to run across them towards this massive open room I had never seen before but the Guardians followed me down below and what they had done was grab on to the walkways and were going “hand over hand” to keep up with and try to catch me so I had to constantly stay moving to avoid them.

This massive room was sort of like a super large work room that had these huge turning wheel generators in them that a lot of enslaved hybrids were working at. They were either in or on the wheels making them turn and the machines were pumping water up into these pipes that went to what I could only assume was the human world to cause massive, MASSIVE amounts of rain and water.

BASICALLY the monsters were flooding out the humans on purpose and I can only assume it was because they wanted to kill all of them so they could live in the human world instead. I discovered this and wanted to stop it so I ran all across the walkways, with the Guardians hot at my heels and causing a scene down below which was drawing attention to myself, until I was able to get onto one of the generator wheels and try to mess it up somehow. But this was the point in the dream where the Guardians had managed to catch up to me and yank me off of the wheel towards the ground below and I woke the fuck up because I did not want to see what happened after that.

This was the singularly weirdest dream I can vividly recall in recent months. Even right now as I sit here typing this out I can hear the sounds the generator wheels made in my head and the “roo-uwah, roo-uwah” noises the Guardians made whenever their tops would open when they bounced. I don’t know if it means anything and I hardly doubt it past being just a weird ass dream but... Good lord it was a fucking trip.
