Three Vintage Simstress Dresses 4t2

My first 4t2 clothing conversions! These too a bit longer than I've expected, and I've definitely learned a lot. Some things were easier than expected and some... not so much.

The AF mesh is enabled for elders, and the TF version is repo'd to the AF files, so it needs those to function. The Casual and Velvet Dresses are everyday and outwear, while the Day Dress is just enabled for everyday.

The original dresses are by @vintagesimstress and can be found here, here and here! Shoes are somewhat edited 4t2 boots by @janika31 and @deedee-sims, and the tights for the TF version are from @oldtimeyskellington.

Things We've Learned, or Excuses and Justifications:

The original TS4 textures were HQ compatible and too big for TS2, and except for the Velvet dress they didn't want to reduce down without going muddy. So most of the swatches are new based on Vintage Simstress' PSDs and some Victorian color palettes I found.

On that note, there are way too many swatches and almost 300 files. I'll probably make that mistake again.

I found the original pattern and a second pattern I liked for the Day Dress on Colour Lovers. There are also additional swatches using parts of old textures from AAS dresses.

I added a collar to the Velvet Dress, and the cuffs were remapped a smidge to work with the new lace patterns.

These don't have morphs because I couldn't get the 5gd meshes to import into Blender for some reason. I'll update the meshes once I can figure out that nonsense.

Sims can sit down; and the skirt shouldn't clip though most tables, desks, etc; but will still clip though some things. Bars are a notable issue.

I learned a lot doing this, and in classic Nykteia style, I definitely overcomplicated some parts and overthought some things.

I love the original dresses so much and I really hope I did them even an ounce of justice.

any tips on how to draw in the splatoon style?

Ive been trying over and over to answer this question but i simply can't, cus i dont know how i make stuff, i did 2 tutorials in the past and they are simply me going "yeah you just go black in your mind and then come back and boom!" I tried to film myself a few times but still it's simply me zoning out filling a canvas of millions of sketches and then just drawing and drawing. There's no step by step thing, I simply just go BRBRBRBRBBRR and like adding really REALLY specific details and then BRBRBRBBR.

I tried hard, to think, why I make it accurate, I honestly tried for over 4 years to do splatoon looking art before i even opened this account, especially for commissions or doing more splatband art, people can give you feedback and if you're good enough they'll pay you.

I really came to think I was the best to just hate the art i did 3 days after, I did the "pufuu" moment trying to fake leake art or something and you can really put there if ppl is 1) so desesperated for new art 2) youre good at it

Then I tried to think, well did i studied the style? Yesss,,, at the begining, then i starts to differ as different artists besides Inoue, and his style also develops, so basically as long it fits,,

These 3 drawings just look complely different from each other and still it simply makes them more unique.

"But then how you make it splatoon?" You simply can't, cus it is not just one person, there is a lot, make it your own, give it your own twist, but, what about brushes, THATS what gives the style... right?

is it the anatomy? neither, you can clearly see how they change every time how they draw inklings, sometimes the draw eyebrows in place, sometimes they round the faces sometimes they color pink they mouth despite the ink color. IT IS NOT JUST ONE PERSON.

Hi! Your coloring on that recent may day gifset of eddie and buck is so incredibly gorgeous, do you think you could explain how you managed to color the scene like that, despite how dark and blue it is, with flashing lights? Only if you want to! Love everything you post 💌

hiiii, oh my gosh thank you so much!! yeah this scene is so dark and cold, and with the flashing lights it's not the most ideal scene to color. what i did is mostly just worked on bringing back some warmth and light back into the scene, and keep the shadows deep enough.

you're lucky, this is one of the very few times where i actually kept my psd, so i can give you the exact details 😅 steps under the cut! (reference gifset)

this is how the gif looks sharpened without any coloring layers:

i usually start coloring by trying out the automatic settings of a curves layer, see if that helps. it sometimes does the heavy lifting for me, but for this particular scene it didn't do much. so i just brighten up the scene a bit with some levels, curves, and exposure layers. i prefer doing it little by little over multiple layers than all at once.

don't worry about the blacks being too lifted and gray, i'll fix that later.

when the brightness is where i want it to be, i usually use channel mixer and/or color balance to bring back some colors in (or remove tones i don't want). for this scene i only used color balance to bring back some warmth (reds and yellows). i always use color balance in all three midtones, shadows, and hightlights (usually in that order too, but i often go back in between them to change the values as i need).

when the tones are where i want them, i go play around with the separate colors with a selective color layer (or two or three, depending. usually at least two). for this one i went in the blacks and added some more blacks, so the shadows are a bit more deep. then i went in the reds and yellows to bring more warmth.

and the magentas to make sure the skintones aren't too pink, then i went to the blues and cyans to enhance the blue tones from the lights i didn't touch the greens, neutrals, or whites for this scene.

i then like to add some vibrance and saturation with a vibrance layer. it's at this point that it really comes to life, and that i really see what difference a good selective color layer makes. sometimes i use multiple selective color layers to separate warm and cold tones, but i didn't feel the need to do that here.

i wanted the yellow stripes on their turnouts to be less green so i fixed it with a hue/saturation layer in yellow.

then i added my usual brightness/contrast and black & white layers on top to add more depth and contrast.

after these final touches, the skintone was slightly too deep for my liking so i went in and fixed it with another selective color layer in the reds, but you could always go back to the first selective color layer and edit the red sliders there, if you prefer to have less layers. i placed this layer between the vibrance layer and first selective color layer.

Hey Nonnie, thank you! This is super late, but I don't actually have the psd for this set anymore (I delete them as soon as I post them), so we're just gonna wing it with a gif I made the other day. I think this ask is about the text, but if it's anything else, just drop me another line and I'll get to it when I can!

I'm pretty sure I got this tutorial from the wonderful @eddiediaaz but I then turned it into Lazy Girl Hours :)) anywho, here we go!

This tutorial assumes basic knowledge of gif-making, Photoshop, and coloring. I’ve only described the typography tutorial in this, but you can reach out if you have any questions.

Couple things to note beforehand:

There is a lot of trial and error involved when doing any sort of effect, and this is no exception! You might have to play around with the colors and the settings before you find something that looks good and readable and that fits your set!

This text effect works better on big gifs (540px width).

For this, I find that a simple font works better than a fully-cursive one, but play around with what you like. The boxes may need some adjusting if you use a font with too many tall or tail letters (i.e. text where all the letters aren't on one uniform line - that's why capital letters work so well.)

Movement works really well with effects like these, but again, it depends on your gif + readability. If you have a blended gif, it may take a little more trial and error.

I work in frame animation for all my text effects, but this works just as well in timeline as well.

We’re going to start with this gif:

First, I like to put my text on the gif. You can obviously move this around later so don't worry too much about how it looks right now.

The dialogue is "Just don't feel it." "Feel" is one of those Big Words for this quote, so I'm going to emphasize it with cursive text.

I am using Moon for the sans serif text, and Santa Fe Spring for the cursive text. Keep both of these in white for now:

Next, we're going to use the rectangular marquee tool to draw our rectangles around the capital letters (we're not touching the cursive text right now). I just eyeball this, and then try to center it as much as possible.

(The rectangular marquee tool has a keyboard shortcut of M, and it's the second tool in that little toolbar on the left of most people's Photoshop.)

This is what that'll look like:

Next, we're going to go down to the icons at the bottom right of the layers panel and select the half-black half-white circle > Color Fill.... You should get a color dialogue box. Choose your color - I'm using #8d0000. Then, we're going to move that layer below the corresponding text layer, and set its blending mode to Difference. This is what that looks like (click the image for better quality):

I'm going to repeat that with the other two boxes as well, using the same color. The boxes will look different with the Difference blending mode because of the shadows underneath.

For example, the box with "it" looks like a solid red square because it's against a completely black background, while the other two have some blue shading to them since there are some highlights behind them.

This is what my gif looks like now:

Next, I like to go The Lazy Girl™ route and put all three color-fill layers into one group underneath all the text layers. This just lets me edit the drop shadow of all three of them at the same time.

Right-click the group and open up the Blending Options. In Drop Shadow, these are the settings I'm using. The drop shadow color is #0c6477:

(Note: uncheck "Use Global Light" especially if you're working in frame animation to make sure all the drop shadow has the same angle on all frames.)

This is what my gif looks like now:

Now that we've finished that, time to move on to the cursive text.

I usually match the cursive text to the palette of the rest of the text, and since the drop shadow is our "accent" color, so to speak, I'm going to use a lighter version of that color. I am also going to add a drop shadow for readability.

The color I used for the text is #acfffe and I actually ended up adding two drop shadows, just because I needed something subtle that doesn't overwhelm the text, especially since it's a delicate font. Here are the settings for both layers:

And here's what my gif looks like now:

Now, before we move on to the lines, just check the adjustment of all these text layers, see if there's anything you want to change. It's easier to change now than after the lines are added, since you'll most likely have to redraw them if you move the boxes after the fact.

To draw the lines, we're going to use the Line Tool. I just freehand all of this, and I try to go from center to center of the boxes when I can. It all depends on your angles.

My lines are 2px thick, but you can change these depending on your preference. Here's what mine look like right now:

We're going to do the same lazy hack that we did for the color fill, and put all three line layers into a group. Move this group below the text layer and the color fill layers. The reason for this is so that the lines look like they're coming seamlessly from the box, rather than from on top of them or something.

Then, set the group to opacity 50%. I like more subtle, simple looks in my gifs, so I don't like super high opacities.

And that's it! This is our final gif:

Some final notes:

Absolutely play around with the blending modes of the color fill layers for this effect. These two gifs are the exact same color we've been using, just two different blending modes. You can see how drastically different they look. The first one is Linear Dodge (Add) and the second one is Vivid Light:

It can change how your gif looks in a BIG way, so play around with it, see what you like, especially if you don't really like the "two toned" thing going on.

Sometimes, I also like playing with the width and height of the text in the font settings, making it shorter and wider, or making it taller and more compact. You can play with the letter spacing as well. The world is your oyster, etc etc.

One other thing I've started doing is erasing the lines with a big brush, just to fade them from his face a little, like this:

To do that, use a layer mask on the line layer folder, and a brush that's 0% hardness, and at least 200px big. For this gif, I also changed the opacity of the lines back to 100% so the fading effect is a little more pronounced:

Both of the teenagers looked at their coaches with wide eyes. They were supposed to prepare for their competition and not having some group bonding.

"We have to prepare coach! We don't have time for such a things, not like there's a one good thing about the idiot Nakahara."

,,You little-"

,,I'm not the little one here."

,,Enough, do what I said or you are being disqualified. How are you two supposed to do such an art as ballroom dancing, when you can't even say a single nice thing about the other one?"

Both the brunette and the ginger haired teens went quiet without sparing a glance at the other one. Chuuya refused to start, there is no way he will say it first.

Is there even one good thing about his partner? He was probably handsome according to ladies. Now when he thought about it deeper Osamu wasn't bad looking. He was handsome, though his hair always looked somehow greasy. Was hair even naturally like this... maybe they were originally curly?

,,I like your style..."

The brunette spoke up shocking the ginger next to him.

,,... in shoes."

Before Chuuya could argue back the coach had enough and raised his hands to flick the boys forehead.

,,What? Why that coach?"

Osamu started whining betrayed. Why did he had to bother with such a minor things before important stage performance?

,,Come on, I'm not forcing you two to love each other. But dancing is more than just muscle memory of some steps and movements. It's an art, made by two people. And two messy souls cannot make such an art together. Now be honest, You can go back to bickering as always after today's day."

Chuuya's thoughts were dismantling everywhere. What type of compliment should he state about Osamu Dazai?

,,I like the way you value and treat your belongings. You might get the filthiest and the most boring gift, but you will still treat it as if it's made out of diamonds."

Osamu moved his eyes towards the chain on Chuuya's hat.

His hands hesitantly traced the chain on his hat. How did Osamu knew he didn't just bought it, but he wasn't sure if he wanted to get his answers right now.

,,Thanks I guess, so umm..."

Chuuya couldn't bring himself to speak up. There was definitely something good about Osamu, but why his mind was unable to bring up any at this moment?

,,I know you want to say that you love everything about me Nakahara, but one thing will be enough for today."

As if.

,,Well i like your..."

He really couldn't decide and Osamu's thrilled eyes waiting for him to finally give him some praise weren't helping.

,,...I like your hands."

The room fell into silence.

,,My my hands? I mean, understandable. But why my hands out of everything man."

Thier trainer was still watching them silently not uttering a single word anymore.

,,You wanted one thing and i said one! You were staring at me weirdly and all too!"

Chuuya couldn't help but kept quietly screaming and complaining.

,,Alright, i think that's enough for today."

The coach gave up and quickly rushed away from the bickering teenagers.

,,Come on Nakahara, we don't need to be lovers to beat some losers in dancing."

Osamu took his hand from his coat and reached to Chuuya. Both of them were already clothed and ready, Osamu with his black shirt covering most of his bandaged places. His overcoat was lined with charming golden patern. And Chuuya with silky red shirt and black vest, thick tied belt included.

,,Just don't mess up Dazai."

,,Same goes to you, the Academy's future is in our hands after all."

The first half of the participants were already on the dance floor doing the introducing dance.

All pairs were gently swaying into the music including Chuuya Nakahara and Osamu Dazai. Being on the dance floor was as beautiful as always, Chuuya found comfort in dancing. He could thoughtfully express everything his heart bears without actually dealing with the problems. Someone might adress it as running away from their problems, but for Chuuya it was freeing. Being free from all the world problems and all the other tasks he had to do after this dance will end.

,,You are a bit stern Chuuya, relax a bit."

Osamu's fingers slightly tapped the gingers back while the slight wind caused by the movement of their bodies was slightly messing their hair.

,,Stop doing that and no need to call me by my first name Dazai."

Chuuya made sure to put emphasis on Osamu's name.

,,Ah Chuuya Nakahara..."

Both of the teenagers remained silent for the rest of their dance, but anyone observing their movements could see the slight change in their movements.

,,The main dance is in 10 minutes from now on Nakahara. I don't know what's going on inside your head, but let it go and focus on what's important now."

Their coach give them last bit of advice and courageous words and left to watch one of the pairs on the dance floor.

,,My back feels a bit stiff, could hand me a bit of help Dazai?"

He couldn't help but hear his thoughts running in his head more fast than usually.

It's been almost thirty minutes from when their dance ended and Osamu's hands left his body, but the ginger still felt his touch burning on his skin as if it burned through his clothes.

Osamu got up and went behind Chuuya, with swift throw and grab he could feel a crack and Chuuya's body went more into loose position however the burning sensation haven't disappeared.

As soon as Chuuya's feets touched the dance floor he was blinded by lights from all directions and the audience greeted both teenagers with light applause.

Suddenly Chuuya felt 5 years old again, seeing the world for the first time and tasting the aroma of society. Before he could sink deeper into his corrosive thoughts slim hand interrupted him. A soft touch going from his neck in light circles to his lower back.

After all he wasn't alone, not for now. With all his strenght he lifted his head to see Osamu next to him, even if he wasn't the best person or someone with heartwarming personality he felt safe with him.

Hi, I’m new to gif making and I was wondering if you would please post a colouring tutorial for any gifset you’re working on right now?

this is the set i used these for

I was thinking about giving you a psd to look at as well but tbh its better if you learn to do the process yourself instead of relying on psd's made by other people. I'm a little old school in that regard, repetition is the key to remembrance and practice makes perfect and all that.

So I'm working on an OPLA Zoro/Luffy set right now which I guess kind of works out for you since I have to do more work recoloring live action scenes.

So I've made my gifs, I've cropped them to 540x540.

Each gif will get two Smart Sharpen (Filters>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen) smart filters. It's important that you do them in this order or it will look different. The first and second filter, respectively -

Amount: 500% Radius: 0.3px Amount: 10% Radius: 10px

You can adjust these as you'd like, but I personally don't do that. I know some giffers add Gaussian Blurs or Surface Blurs, but I like my gifs to be as crisp and clean as possible, I don't want any blur on them.

From that you can start to color. Since I'm doing overlays for this set, I'm going to get that set up first and then I'll start on the coloring. I'm not going to explain how to do overlays in this tutorial just because it's a long explanation. I do have a tutorial for Photopea that I will link at the bottom. The process is mostly the same with some minor variances.

So the first gif I'm recoloring is pretty dark. Both gifs on it are dark, so I'm going to relight them separately with a Curves layer. When using Curves, I use the eyedroppers to show PS which two points of white and black I want the gif balanced between. So with the white eyedropper selected, I click on a white point of the gif and with the black eyedropper I click on a dark point of the gif. This is going to relight your gif and is one of the most important steps in coloring gifs.

I don't always get it right the first try and I usually click around a bit and try different points of white/black before I find something I like the best.

Next I'm going to add a Hue/Saturation layer with the Saturation at 10 and a Vibrance layer with the Vibrance at 30. I use these as base points and I'll recolor the rest of my gif after doing these.

I don't love how red Mackenyu is now so I'm going to add a Hue/Sat layer and switch to the Red panel and set the Saturation to -10 and the Lightness to -5.

My personal rule of thumb when adjusting the skin tone of my actors and characters of the Global Majority is to do it in increments with the H/S no more than -30 and I usually set the Lightness to half of whatever the H/S is. But of course this is just what I do and if something else works better for you, please do that.

From here I'm going to do the rest of the heavy adjusting:

Color Balance > Tone: Shadows Cyan / Red: +10

Selective Color > Red Cyan: +50

Selective Color > Black Black: +5

Brightness/Contrast Brightness: +10

Selective Color > Magenta Magenta: -50

Vibrance Vibrance: +30

And for now, I'm done with this gif and I'm going to move on to the others in the set.

One of the other gifs is really bright, its made up of a day time scene. My coloring on this will be really different than the night scenes.

The same base layers: Curves, Hue/Sat, Vibrance I'm also going to put the same Hue/Sat red adjustment layer here because I don't want Kiki and Mack to be too red.

Color Balance > Shadows Cyan - Red: +10 Yellow - Blue: +10

Selective Color > Cyan Cyan: +50 Yellow: -50

Selective Color > Black Black: +10

Brightness/Contrast Brightness: -10

Selective Color > Yellow Yellow: -20

Vibrance +30

Honestly anon, once I got more comfortable with PS my coloring process is more varied. I go by vibes more often than not. And actually, I did all this work and then changed my mind once I got all the gifs done and ended up making most of them black and white.

“So, you're telling me that you want me to basically scrap the PSD entirely in favor of building a canon to spray a psychoreactive slime that you guys collected from under the streets of New York back in 1989 after we give it a positive charge by playing Jackie Wilson?” Lars asked, attempting to understand the plan Ray had just explained to him.

“Yes.” Ray nodded.

“I love it.” The younger man smiled, clasping his hands together. “We'll get straight to work.”

After a few days, the canons were ready. Meeting at the Firehouse, Ray explained the rest of the plan.

“We'll use these the same way we did on Vigo. With enough luck, this stuff will separate the spirit from Alex.”

“How do we know this stuff is even going to work?” Phoebe questioned. “So far, there hasn't been any indication of a link between this spirit and Vigo.”

“All we can do is hope, my dear.” Ray responded.

“Ma me nekel, ma su petu inu sessu kunkkum, ma annitu, rabum girabum. Ma ina utu emu salmu kima labasu, ma ina nanna emu kima saleme. Ma ina tamtu samsum isatum ma ina elenu maqatu.”

As the ritual finished, Alex groaned, hearing the siren of the Ecto-1 echo down the street. Turning as the door slammed shut, she smirked at Ray.

“Raymond.” She sighed, her voice distorted.

Ray nodded.

“Alka.” She commanded.

Following her command, he was soon face to face with her.

Smiling devilishly, she lifted a finger, tracing his hairline, the shape of his ear, ending by lifting his chin to look directly into his eyes.

“Seh…wam ana su.” She whispered, slowly dragging her hand down his neck, over his shoulder, placing it over his heart, which was beating rapidly.

The rest of the Ghostbusters waited on baited breath, slime cannons at the ready.

“Arammu…inu ina naru mita summ daku lam sasm…ma asru.”

Ray lurched forward, tears springing to his eyes, feeling his heart begin to be torn from his chest.

“Now!” Winston shouted, slime shooting from each of the canons.

Alex's unconscious form fell into Ray's arms, which instantly pulled her close, as the spirit flew away, shouting “Mitu ma daltu. Adannu ma imow. An ase seru!”

“You guys alright?” Winston asked, panicked, as he jogged over to where Ray and Alex had fallen, closely followed by the rest of the team.

Ray nodded. “Yeah. We're fine.” He moved some of Alex's slime covered hair out of her face as she began to stir.

“You sure? You look terrified.”

Ray locked his gaze with Winston's, his face dead serious.

“That phrase the spirit said as it flew away. ‘Mitu ma daltu. Adannu ma imow. An ase seru.’ In English it means ‘Death is but a door. Time is but a window. I'll be back.’”

“That's what Vigo said just before his head died.” Winston grimaced.

State of the Thing: December

Heyo everyone, it's nearly the end of 2023, and what a wild ride it was. A return to full-time freelancing, as well as several new clients and pushing past my comfort zone with some of this year's new works. With the start of a new year coming, I figured this calls for a long-from article rather than the usual "Commissions for the month" post.

So, on the topic of commissions, due to several reasons (which will be brought up further down) I will be very busy in December, and as such will be offering 2 Rendered-style slots for the month of December! My friends and I will be heading to Japan for a holiday trip during this period, so I will be not available for contact during this period. You can send email requests for commissions, but I may not be able to reply until I've returned.

Since these are the days where my friends, family, and I commemorate Christmas and New Year's Eve, I will not be available for contact during these days as well.

Now, let's talk about 2024; it's no surprise that 2023 wasn't the most fantastic in terms of earning my keep, what with the worsening state of the economy, the increasing efforts of social media to strangle the reach of creators, as well as the ongoing threat of unscrupulous users of AI. In light of all this, I've been thinking of a few possible things I could do to bring more to the table:

Streaming?

A few people have expressed interest in seeing my workflow, and so I was thinking of possibly streaming for 1-2 hours while I work on art. I'll be doing a few trial streams in January 2024 at different time zones to gauge interest, and if it pans out well, I'll iron out the kinks regarding the times when I'll stream, with possible expansions to content.

Restructuring of Ko-Fi subscriptions

Since my Ko-Fi Subcriptions haven't been gaining a lot of traction, I've been thinking about offering more stuff to entice others to join in. The $1 tier will remain the same, but there will be adjustments to the $3 tier and an additional $5 tier with addtional rewards (with updated branding to reflect the changes), and the changes will apply in January 2024.

Possible Price Adjustments

Since Singapore has been increasing Goods and Service Taxes to 9%, and most services (Paypal, website hosting, cloud storage) upping operation costs to compensate, it may be time to increase prices for commissions. I'll formulate an updated rate based on the current trend of living wages, and will probably announce the updated prices during the March commission announcement (at end of February).

I don't remember what psd I found on here that was my insp. so I can't link a similar one, sorry about that!! but I'll just finally release mine. I basically use this psd for all my comic edits with minor changes.

made from scratch by me, you can edit it, play around with it and use it as you please, just don't claim and don't whitewash!!

Under the cut explains a bit more about the psd, what the layers do, and how to edit them if needed!

starting from the bottom:

the bottom 2 layers (brightness/contrast & curves) brighten the image,

selective color 1 darkens blacks and greys,

vibrance adds... vibrance,

selective color 2 lightens all blues and makes them brighter (optional; things might be too bright)

gradient map 1 adds a blue hue and brightens everything but especially blues. kinda hard to explain all it does but you'll see

gradient map 2 adds a yellow hue (to balance out the previous layer) and brightens everything but especially yellows. again kinda hard to explain but it adds a cool effect

the gradient map layers brighten up all colors which includes blacks/greys/dark colors, so the next 2 layers (exposure & selective color 3) is to darken those back down to an appropriate level making the image cohesive and not blinding, but keeps the hues and brightness of the rest of the colors, adding this cool effect to almost every color and making them vibrant/saturated and very colorful. without these 2 layers (again the exposure & selective color 3) the image would be so over exposed you wouldn't be able to tell what's going on

selective color 4 is optional, but it makes yellows (mostly yellow and orange) lighter and softer, so they're less saturated

and finally curves 2 is to darken blacks/greys/dark colors even more so that black colors in the original image stay black. to get things even blacker/darker, I would recommend adding another selective color layer on top of everything, and going to blacks and greys and setting everything to be blacker (for help with that look at the 1st selective color layer and just duplicate it. play around with it and see what you get)

some tips:

if the image is too saturated/over colored/just too much going on, you can take off gradient map 1 and maybe the exposure or selective color 3 to get a more appropriate coloring for your style!

this psd could probably be simplified by some ps wiz but that's not me so this is the way it was made. just play around with layers and see what you get.

DON'T WHITEWASH (redwash/orangewash/etc...) if the persons skin tone (or anything else) looks washed out/wrong, just use a layer mask and bush tool set to black to erase that layer from whatever you want it off of. if it's more than that layer, use the layer mask on the group itself and again brush tool set to black to erase it off of whatever.

lastly;

play around and have fun! see what you come up with (tag me in your creations!!) and see what fits you/your style.
