Swaran Salaria: A Political Biography

Swaran S. Salaran, winner of the “Rashtriya Ekta Award” of 2002 have had an exemplary trail of work which still is in continuation.

He has made a considerable amount of donation to institutes that helped many helpless children, some of the institutes where his donations went are M.C Asha Kiran School for Differently Abled Children, Usha Mata Minar Public School, SMSO Rajput Sr. Secondary School. His involvement in uplifting the youth had also seen to have its manifestation in the donations given to Maharana Pratap Youth Club, Behrampur.

Apart from his inclinations towards philanthropy, his political positions at BJP also saw consolidations since he had been in a number of exceptional positions over the year. He had been the national executive twice, Co-convener of the national industry and trade cell, permanent invitee as a Punjab state executive member, chairman of the state election campaign during Lok Sabha and a member of the delegation of national BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

Will join investigation, says Deep Sidhu

Actor-turned-activist Deep Sidhu, who has been booked in connection with the religious flag incident at Red Fort, has said he needs some time to bring out the truth and then will join the investigation.

The 36-year-old Sidhu is in the eye of a storm for being among the protesters who put up a religious flag atop the Red Fort on Republic Day.

“Arrest warrant has been issued against me and also a look out notice has been issued against me. First I want to give this message that I will join the investigation,” Sidhu said in a video uploaded on Facebook.

He said he needed some time to bring out the truth.

“Because whatever has been spread, it is false information and it is misleading the public at large. Therefore, I need a couple of days to bring out the truth and then I will join the investigation,” said Sidhu.

“I am requesting the investigation agencies...I have not done anything wrong then why should I run away and why should I be scared. I am not scared.I have done nothing wrong and that will come out,” he said.

He told the investigation agencies and the police department that he will come to them in two days.

“The kind of rumours being spread is not based on facts. I need two days to bring out the truth based on the facts and I will collect all the evidence and proof,” he stated.

The Delhi Police had named actor Deep Sidhu in an FIR lodged in connection with the Red Fort incident.

Sidhu was present at the Red Fort when a religious flag and a farmer flag were put at the flagpole at the historic monument, triggering massive outrage.

Sidhu had been accused by farm bodies of trying to defame their agitation and termed a "traitor".

On Thursday, he had hit out at farm leaders for allegedly spreading false propaganda and hatred against him.

On January 26, Sidhu, hailing from Punjab's Muktsar district, had sought to defend the action of protesters at the Red Fort, saying they did not remove the national flag and had put up the 'Nishan Sahib' as a symbolic protest.

Sidhu was also a close aide of BJP MP Sunny Deol, who contested from the Gurdaspur seat in Punjab during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He remained with Deol during the poll campaigning.

Deol had distanced himself from Sidhu in December last year after he joined the farmers' agitation.

In the video, Sidhu said in Punjabi, “We have only hoisted the Nishan Sahib flag on the Red Fort while exercising our democratic right to protest.” Deep Sidhu belong to Muktsar in Punjab and had held a prolonged protest at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana, where accusations of Khalistani elements running the protests had been made. During the Lok Sabha elections in May 2019, Deep Sidhu was in the news for being close to Bollywood actor-politician Sunny Deol, who contested from Gurdaspur as a BJP candidate. However, Deol distanced himself from Sidhu in a tweet, saying he or his family had no relationship with him.

Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the violence and the Red Fort incident, with the Congress’ Shashi Tharoor saying he supported the farmers’ protests from the start but cannot condone “lawlessness”. Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav, who is among the leaders spearheading the agitation against the farm laws, said Sidhu had been disassociated “from our protest right from the beginning”.

But farmer leaders are not impressed. “Apart from boycotting him, a section of the protesters will be sitting on a dharna outside his office in Gurdaspur. Also, like other BJP leaders, we will not allow him to enter the constituency (if he decides to visit),” stated Dr Darshan Pal, convener of the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC).

‘Absent’ MP

Swaran S. Salaria- A man of few words and many deeds!

It is rightly said that legends are not born but are moulded in the fiery furnace of the circumstances society puts in front of them. Swaran S. Mr Salaria was also involved in the rescue work after the Gujarat earthquake. He made necessary arrangements for helping in evacuation and supply medicines and food to the affected people. He arranged a contingent of 500 volunteers to help in the relief work. His contributions to the general good of the society can also be identified in his donation to the Durga Jyoti Manav Kalyan Samiti which organizes eye camps for poor women, children and men on a regular basis.

Swaran S. Salaria has also accomplished many laurels in his political career with BJP by serving in different crucial positions from time to time. Some of them include National Executive members, Lok Sabha Prabhari for Gurdaspur, Punjab State Executive Member, Member of a delegation of National BJP President, Shri Nitin Gadkari to Israel in 2011. Lok Sabha Elections: Sunny Deol files nomination from Gurdaspur

CHANDIGARH: Actor and BJP candidate Sunny Deol on Monday filed his nomination papers from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat in Punjab. After paying obeisance at the Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple in Amritsar in the morning, Deol filed his nomination in Gurdaspur.Deol was accompanied by his brother and actor Bobby Deol. Punjab BJP chief and Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Mailk, Haryana finance minister and party's election incharge of Punjab Capt Abhimanyu and Akali leader Gurbachan Singh Babehali also accompanied Deol. Deol will be addressing a rally at PUDA ground in Gurdaspur later in the day. Senior leadership of BJP and SAD will also be present in the rally. In a tweet, veteran actor Dharmendra sought support of the people for the victory of his son Sunny Deol from Gurdaspur seat. "We seek your support...Support us...it will be your victory. It (victory) will be of brothers of sisters of my Punjab. The BJP has fielded Sunny Deol, a Jat Sikh, from Gurdaspur constituency. Deol is pitted against sitting MP and Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar, AAP's Peter Masih and PDA's Lal Chand in electoral fight from Gurdaspur seat. After filling his nomination papers, Deol will be addressing a rally at PDA ground in Gurdaspur. Senior leadership of the BJP and the SAD will also be present in the rally. After the rally, he will leave for Mumbai for casting his vote. Currently, the Gurdaspur constituency is represented by Congress MP Sunil Jakhar, who won the seat in the 2017 bypoll, which was necessitated after the death of Vinod Khanna in April that year. Other challenges include former party stalwarts Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Rattan Singh Ajnala and Sewa Singh Sekhwan, who, following their sacking from the SAD in late 2018, formed the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) in December the same year. These leaders have influence with voters in the Majha region-which consists of the Gurdaspur, Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts in northwest Punjab. Worse, leaders of other Akali factions-such as Paramjit Singh Sarna, Manjit Singh G.K. and Ravi Inder Singh-appear to be aligning themselves with the Dhindsas. Sukhbir argues that these leaders don’t have mass appeal, but they are pulling away, and it could only weaken the party.

Sukhbir Badal is aware that the exit of top SAD leaders has made the task of reviving the party much more difficult.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the SAD managed to win just two seats — Ferozepur and Bathinda, won by Sukhbir and his wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, respectively — despite a slight uptick in its overall vote share from 26.3 per cent to 27.5 per cent. What is especially worrying is that apart from these seats, the SAD was not a major contender in the state’s Malwa region, which accounts for 69 seats in the 117-seat assembly. While Sukhdev Dhindsa might not have a huge voter base around his pocket borough in Sangrur (in the Malwa belt), his exit will complicate matters. His understanding of religious issues made him indispensable to the SAD and his exit will mean a longer recovery period for the party among panthic voters in the region.

Sukhbir disagrees with that assessmen — but according to Parminder Dhindsa, “that is exactly the problem.” Sukhdev Dhindsa elaborates: “I requested SAD leaders to offer an apology to the Akal Takht. Initially, they agreed, but they eventually did not go.” Parminder says: “It would not have been an admission of guilt, but would have pacified the agitators.”

Worse, the SAD’s allies may also be looking to profit from its troubles. On January 17, at an event in Jalandhar to elect new state BJP chief Ashwani Sharma, many leaders spoke of abandoning the BJP-SAD alliance. Although the party leadership is treading cautiously on the issue of abandoning an ally of two decades, especially given the recent split between the BJP and its allies in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, this will not prevent BJP leaders from opening channels with the new Akali Dal (Taksali).

For over two decades, thanks to its strength in the state, the SAD managed to retain a leadership position in its alliance with the BJP. However, BJP leaders believe that recent results — such as the increase in the alliance’s vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha election — are a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity. This could encourage new alliances — such as with the Dhindsa-led Akali Dal (Taksali). The first overtures in this regard appear to have come from the Centre. In January 2019, the Union government honoured Sukhdev Dhindsa with the Padma Bhushan — and in his bid to stitch together a new alliance, Dhindsa has avoided taking potshots at the BJP while training his fire on the Badals. Further, on January 20, the BJP snapped ties with the SAD for the Delhi election, and is in touch with the rebels for support in the assembly poll.

Dhindsa’s new status as an opposition leader close to the BJP could also upset the Badal family’s fortunes when it comes to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Elections to this body, which administers gurudwaras in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, including the Golden Temple, have been due since 2016, with the Amit Shah-led home ministry yet to decide on a date.

For the moment, the BJP appears happy to wait for the Dhindsas to build a new Akali Dal and attract panthic votes. The BJP has frequently used a combination of such voters with its own base to win key urban centres such as Jalandhar, Bathinda, Patiala and Ludhiana. “We can do it for the new [breakaway] Akali Dal as well,” says a top BJP leader.

Sukhbir dismisses the conjecture. “We have clear alliance terms,” he says. “They know their 23 assembly seats, we have our 94. Similarly, we have a 10-3 arrangement for the general election. This will continue.”
