Ossian the sniper: don’t get me wrong he loves you dearly. So much in fact that in his sleep. Vinland Saga Hybrid AU [#2]

I have already written a profile about Hybrid Thorfinn and Askeladd. Now, I am working on hybrid Bjorn, Canute, and Thorkell. Have some more random thoughts of mine while I write. :]

● Griffin Askeladd flexes his wings in front of anyone he deems attractive or worthy. He does it in front of Bjorn a lot.

● Snow Leopard Thorfinn will flick his tail in anyone's face who irritates him.

● Both sexes of griffins are able to lay eggs. So Griffin Askeladd can lay eggs like a chicken. That will never be funny to me. This is why Thorfinn often mistakes him for a chicken.

● Is also where the nickname 'rooster/cock' originated. Cock also means a male rooster... Get your mind out of the gutter.

"You have wings and you lay eggs; how does that not make you a chicken? Stupid cock!"

● Thorfinn knocks over things like a cat well—I mean, he is a snow leopard, technically he is a cat.

Ok my *favourite* Athelstan headcanons I've come up with so far, complied from all my earlier compilations** go:

He pushes himself too far without knowing it sometimes, trying to exist through being way too stressed, exhausted etc.

Has trouble getting the at LEAST 3 languages he speaks straight in his head sometimes especially in those scenarios

Tends the garden at Ragnar's farm, and later keeps a little garden of his own, it keeps him calm and reminds him of his work at Lindisfarne

His birth name wasn't Athelstan, that's his chosen monk name (in a couple fics of mine I've called him Anselm)

Bakes bread like an absolute King

Good at cooking in general

Soup

Has an intense fear of thunderstorms/severe weather

Can swim if he has to but not a fan of water either

Ambidextrous (and would get in trouble at the monastery for occasionally using "the devil's hand" by accident)

But now he can fight with both hands so that's cool

Nearsighted (that's what spending years squinting at small print by candlelight will do to a guy)

It's rare for him to get sick

But when he does it hits him like an absolute truck. Like he won't catch a single cold for YEARS and then out of nowhere bam, stuck in bed for two weeks with the worst bug of his life

Lagertha helps him out if he's unwell, he's got some medical training from being a monk but like I said earlier when he's too stressed his brain does Not work

And he's also helped her with injury recovery after battles, sometimes giving her insight to things that would've been a lot more serious otherwise

Basically he's her physio coach

(he's tried to do this with Ragnar too but that man is Too Stubborn -- even when it's Athelstan)

Ragnar's INSTINCT is to immediately roast most things he says about his religion off bat-- but then he'll spend hours thinking about his takes anyway and come back like hold on what was that you said. And Athelstan is like. Aha.

He and Helga are best buds (to Floki's dismay)

Face turns beet red in the cold

Ragnar LOVES to playfully slap him on the back, throw an arm around him, hugs etc. which is all fun and great but sometimes he'll forget that Athelstan is like. Small. And will straight up knock him over.

Animals like him instinctively

He's that weird guy who brings his sketchbook to a party & draws people

But fr he has more trouble remembering faces than names (and to him all the Norsemen kinda look alike. He will never admit that.) so he keeps track of everybody this way

Eventually does get a tattoo on a wrist or ankle where it can't be seen by anyone

Sorta easy to not notice. He can be very quiet, to the point where if he wanted to sneak around and snoop he could with almost zero effort. But he doesn't bc morals???

Finds Ragnar's old clothes (that he's stuck with at the beginning of the series) comforting and doesn't mind that they're about four sizes too big -- he's used to loose oversized robes after all

Gyda had a crush on him when he first arrived and Bjorn teased her incessantly about it (Athelstan had no idea)

People get to know him as kind of an advisor and sagely type, and will come to him for advice (honestly...kind of like a priest would do. which is not a connection he makes anyone aware of, but it makes him happy)

Strategy game enthusiast

Learns to knit & makes his own clothes

Has a bit of a photographic memory

Learns to make tattoos despite having only one of his own

Tries to give Ragnar one at one point and they think it'll be a ~bonding experience~ but Ragnar will not stop squirming and Athelstan gets increasingly frustrated trying to get him to Hold The Fuck Still

Okay okay so i went to see the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes yesterday (and i loved it) and after your post about the Nuff lookalike, I got to thinking about the games themselves

How do you think would the otwd gang respond in the event of being thrown into the hungergames? Like how would they act, would they group up, who would take care of others, who would eventually win (and maybe how would that affect their psyche and mental state afterwards oop)

This is just a very interesting question to me and id love to hear your thoughts about it!! For me this has always been a way to build certain parts of characters that aren't necessarily shown in stories, but are still important to know as the hungergames often drive people to either their lowest lows or their highest compassion

Omgg this is a difficult question! Prev gen is quick and easy: Gustav is obviously a district 4 boy and very clever but easily gets in over his head so he'd probably befriend a Career pack or somehow form an alliance with Cato. Unlike our fav Career of the same name, Cato is extremely district 12 coded (all lucy gray's songs!!!!) and very unfriendly and independent haha so despite his hunting skill I think he'd be underestimated and unwilling to join a pack. If he was in the same game as Gustav, he might join him but then (when he begins to suspect that he's next on Gustav's list) stab him in the back (or the eye). Cato is likely winning any game they throw him in, but in an actual hunger games au his rage against the Capitol would make him a risky victor. He wouldn't be cooperative afterwards and that could get him killed.

I don't wanna get into the Hiccup gang bc that's too difficult haha but my bets are on Astrid. As for the kids, it's hard to think about district splits bc it messes up their family dynamics so I won't try to sort that out.

Baldur and Rilla are textbook Careers, well trained with most weapons. Baldur in particular can win over a crowd and he's less honorable than Rilla so I think he'd get far and probably stab her in the back. He usually overestimates himself though, and that's one of his major flaws.

Nuffink is a loner, he wouldn't trust anybody in the games. He's mostly avoiding others and hiding, I can also see him luring others into striking range and he's pretty feral when forced to fight. I'm thinking of Thresh from Katniss's games. He gets a favorite weapon in itpn but not one that's usually in the Games afaik. I think a Career pack would have the best chance of taking him down.

Zephyr would have a Katniss-like technique, a mix of hiding/surviving in the wild with traps and occasionally ambushing others. I can see her and Bjorn teaming up regardless of if they know each other. I don't see Zephyr winning, though, even if Bjorn was trying to protect her. Like Peeta, he's charming the Capitol, winning lots of sponsors and working well with other tributes. It's been mentioned only once or twice, but Bjorn has well rounded talent with most weapons. Particularly spears. And he'd be an ideal victor, "a real hero" like his playlist says. Someone who can manage to win the Games in an honorable way despite the odds. The part of itpn I'm most excited for involves Bjorn being challenged and pushed to his limits in a way that's spiritually similar, I cannot wait to write his plot!

Eret's odds aren't great I fear. She's better trained in plants and climbing than fighting, similar to Rue or Foxface. She'd definitely try to sneak around poisoning people. She'd also be good at charming the Capitol in a real au scenario. But I don't see her winning either, somebody ruthless like Baldur or Tryggir would get her :(

Tryggir is a Career pack type who relies on others to back him up (like how Coral led the others), but I don't think he'd work well with Baldur or Rilla, so if he joins them he's going down early (or managing to take Baldur out). Either that or stays a loner until they take him out anyway.

If Sikka was in their Games (despite her age) she'd have a good chance too. Super sneaky and clever, super good tracker, good at fighting, very Katniss like in skill and temperament. She'd have a good chance at taking Bjorn down too.

So I think it's a coin toss between Bjorn and Sikka, with Sikka maybe having better odds. Probably not what you were expecting since they've barely been involved in the plot so far! But they will be :) They'd both be able to cope with life post games in a mostly normal way, I think, and they'd be good mentors. Both would understand that doing what it takes to survive isn't their fault, it's the system they live in. And I think they're both ideal recruits for a rebellion :) Characters like Baldur and Tryggir would be shameless victors, gloating and reveling in the attention. Nuffink would be a wreck as usual and I think Zephyr would be drowning in guilt. Eret and Rilla would be more like Sikka and Bjorn if they won, though I think Eret and Sikka would be very private and try to disappear from public eye.

So I did my first SCA Melee Wednesday night and it's probably one of the best, consistent ways to experiment with warfare tactics and fighting that actually gets together every week.

My brain is slightly hyper fixated on using a German War Sword in a field context and I'm going to make one similar to Bjorn Ruther's [video added]. That sucker is 6 feet and 10 inches long and I'm 6'2".

He has an amazing article posted on his interpretations and battle accounts of "short weapon" use with pikes that I would like to experiment with.

Talking with my club mates, Marozzo has some context of two handed swords vs. Pole arm and maybe there is some fun interpretation there to experiment with as well.

There is a bit of a meta game in SCA fighting and length seems to be king. So I'm also creating a hooked halberd at the max of 7.5 feet. Also a katzbalger as a side arm, frankly mostly for the aesthetic.

Anyway, long brain ramble just to say, hema-ist and as a fiore-ist, we have this duelist mentality of one on one fighting and battlefield fighting is it's own awareness and positioning practice. Buhurt only does this in a team type scenario but having 10 dudes in a line vs. 10 dudes in a line is huge change in how to fight.

Vikings ask ragnarsson reaction to ivar dying in England instead of ragnar

Okay, this is an interesting one, and I have a lot of thoughts on it.

First off, Bjorn’s probably going to be relieved, if the above scenario means that Ivar and Ragnar’s places become switched, because that means that Bjorn gets his father back and gets rid of the complication of Ivar at the same time. I don’t think there would’ve been a reaction from him like there was when it was Ragnar, not even close, but then again he is still family so it wouldn’t be out of the question that he’d revenge for that still.

Ubbe, similarly, would also want revenge if it had been Ivar instead, more than Bjorn but probably still not enough to rally everyone together to avenge Ivar’s death like they did for Ragnar. Not that he’d let it go and not retaliate, because he would, but the group that goes to do it would be much smaller than the one that shows up to avenge Ragnar.

Hvitserk is the one that refuses to let anyone even suggest that they just forget about it and move on, and that definitely starts more than a few fights. Probably more with Bjorn than Ubbe, but he’d argue with both of them. Even if he’s gotta go over there himself and attempt it, he’s going. Not just because Ivar is his favourite (though he is) but because Hvitserk would’ve done that for any of them. Even if they don’t get along he’d still never consider letting them get away with it.

I don’t know if Sigurd counts, because I’m pretty sure he’s already dead at that point, but, I do think he’d also be onboard with going after Aelle and his men. It wouldn’t be because he cares for Ivar to any great capacity, not at all, but more under the vein of “Okay, sure, Ivar is a bastard and I can’t stand him, but he’s our bastard and we can’t let those cunts think they can kill one of us without punishment,” mixed with “Hey, I can hurt him because he’s my brother, if you do anything I will kill you.” (He refuses to say any of that out loud though, that’d mean admitting he doesn’t totally hate Ivar and that’s never happening)

Floki’s already on the boat waiting, he’s gotta go avenge his chaotic gremlin child.

Comparison

I wonder if anyone has tried to run an RPG where the players don’t get to see their characters’ stats?

I’m thinking that the GM has the full character sheets, but the players only get to know “You always had trouble keeping up with the other kids when they were running around and were sick alot” but you don’t know that’s because you have a CON score of 3. Or “You were never as good a tracker as your uncle Bjorn the Blood-drinker” but it’s not until you leave your village in the North that you find out Bjorn is a legendary ranger and you’re actually pretty incredible. Or “You think you know a lot about the Empire of the Burning Suns because you read all the works of Ibn ep Camris” but you don’t know that Ibn was a pseudonym for a dude who made everything up and instead of a nice “Lore” stat you’re basically a fanboy who doesn’t know better.

In this scenario, the only way to really figure out how good you are is to try stuff, and see how you stack up to other people.

Danish and Swedish officials on Tuesday said two leaks had been identified on the Nord Stream 1 Russia-Europe gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

The news came only hours after a similar development on its twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both conduits have become flash points in the escalating energy war that has sent gas prices rocketing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

What do we know so far?

Officials said a pressure drop was detected in the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas channel soon after a similar fall was detected in its sister pipeline, Nord Stream 2. 

Both of Nord Stream 1's two lines are affected, while one of Nord Stream 2's pipelines showed a drop in pressure.

Marine authorities identified a gas leak southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm as the likely cause of the issue affecting Nord Stream 2. Danish officials warned of a threat to shipping in the area and asked vessels to steer clear.

Swedish authorities on Tuesday said there were two leaks on Nord Stream 1 — one in the Danish maritime economic zone and the other in the Swedish one. The two leaks were reported to be very close to one another.

The German economy ministry said it was investigating the incident.

"We currently do not know the reason for the drop in pressure," it said.

Blasts registered by Swedish seismologists

Seismologists from Sweden's National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT that powerful blasts had been registered in the areas of the gas leaks on Monday.

"There is no doubt that these were explosions," SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told SVT.

Denmark's armed forces meanwhile released footage showing bubbles on the surface of the Baltic Sea above the Nordstream 1 and 2 pipelines and reported that the largest of the leaks had caused surface disturbance of around 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter. 

What's the significance?

Both of the pipelines were built to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe, although the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was never activated. 

German officials have not yet provided any information on the possible cause of the damage. However, Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper cited German security circles saying that sabotage was strongly suspected. "Our imagination no longer allows for a scenario in which this is not a targeted attack," the newspaper quoted its source as saying.

Swedish police launched a preliminary investigation into possible sabotage a national police spokesperson said.

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it was "hard to imagine" that the leaks were "accidental."

Speaking to Danish media while on a visit to Poland, Frederiksen said: "It's an unusual situation, to have three leaks a distance from each other. That's why it's hard to imagine that it's accidental."

Ukraine blamed the leaks on Moscow.

"The large-scale 'gas leak' from Nord Stream 1 is nothing more than a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression towards the EU," Kyiv's presidential advisor Mikhaylo Podolyak wrote on Twitter.

He accused Russia of seeking to "destabilize the economic situation in Europe and cause pre-winter panic."

Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was "extremely concerned" by the reports of damage and that no option, including sabotage, can be excluded at the moment.

"Obviously, there is a destruction of the pipeline. And what the reason is, there is no option that can be ruled out until the results of the investigation emerge," Peskov was cited as saying by Interfax state news agency. "This is an absolutely unprecedented situation that needs to be resolved quickly."

While neither pipeline has been delivering supplies to Europe, both have still been filled with gas. 

Why is no gas flowing from Russia?

Nord Stream 1 was carrying gas to Germany until earlier this month, but Russian energy giant Gazprom cut off the supply, claiming there was a need for urgent maintenance work to repair key components.

German officials have rejected state-owned Gazprom's explanation of technical problems, saying the stoppage is merely a power play in response to Western sanctions.

Gazprom began to cut supplies through Nord Stream 1 in mid-June, blaming a delay in the delivery of a turbine that had been sent to Canada for repair. 

The newer Nord Stream 2 pipeline was fully complete when German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suspended its certification, two days before Russia invaded Ukraine.

Germany has long been highly dependent on imports of fossil fuels from Russia to meet its energy needs but has been forced to look for new sources  since the war in Ukraine began.

Sentenziò enfatico il secondogenito, protendo le braccia.

Gridò Sigyn, iniziando a gesticolare.

Nel volto diafano della divinità si dipinse un’espressione di sincero rammarico.

“Suppongo siate gelosa, nevvero?”

Domandò ovvio, accennando un sorriso sghembo e malizioso.

La bionda fu lesta a negare l’evidenza.

“Non provo alcuna gelosia nei vostri riguardi se è ciò che tenete a sapere.”

Loki scosse la testa in disaccordo.

Propose mesta, assumendo uno sguardo collerico per la bravata orchestrata dal principe oscuro di Asgard.

“Inoltre ciò che avete combinato mi costringerà a non rivolgervi più la parola.”

Aggiunse con la voce venata di delusione.

Il cadetto le afferrò il polso, cingendole i fianchi: tra loro scattò un bacio passionale e travolgente.

Non saggiava le sue labbra da oltre due settimane, avvertendone la mancanza.

Stesso discorso valeva per l’Amica della Vittoria.

Si sbarazzarono degli abiti cerimoniali, rimanendo senz’alcun strato di velo addosso.

Ragnarssons React To Sigurd Killing Ivar:

Ubbe: As a duplicitous character, he would initially be somewhat upset. Even going as far as to rage about Ivar's death in public. However, it wouldn't take even take a few months for Ubbe to forgive Sigurdvand embrace him again.

Bjorn: He bullied Ivar a great deal; and not simply about his crippled condition. So it's unlikely that he would show any empathy at all. Especially since Bjorn abandoned his blood brothers in favor of friends. Therefore news of Sigurd killing Ivar would only serve to shock him more than anything else

Hvitserk: He is the only Ragnarsson that would struggle with Ivar's death. Because as much as they bickered and fought, they were inseparable. So to keep from contemplating revenge against Sigurd, Hvitty would move away to create distance between them.

I don't know how it happens but I kind of like a scenario where the entire Nostromo crew save for Lil Chap and Ash have to go into cryosleep. Little Chap does not trust Ash but does not realize Uncle Ash is much more interested in him than the crew. I imagine a scene of Little Chap getting stalked through the ductwork by a glitching Ash who's alternating between creepy uncle promises and piercing electronic screeching.

Scorched loves playing with Navarro's necklace and when he was a really little beb almost ate it more than once.

Also, while Navarro generally isn't a weepy person when Scorched gets to big to fit into the pockets of her Hawaiian shirt anymore Kay finds her crying while going through her EXTENSIVE albums full of Scorched baby pictures.

Fuqua's burster goes through a phase where he will NOT go to sleep until Khati reads to him.

That first scenario is interesting, makes me think an Alien movie where a fucked up synthetic is the primary scare would be pretty cool (not like David).

Scorched is just always munching on stuff that he shouldn't. Bjorn regrets trying to teach him to play games because now his handheld is covered in bite marks and drool. Andy has almost lost fingers on several occasions. Navarro doesn't try to excuse this behavior but she has tried everything to prevent it; but she's certainly nostalgic for his teething days once he pupates and becomes a toothy mature little gentleman.

Doesn't matter what she reads, started out as her reading soil composition reports as a last resort to get them to stop screeching, but now she relies on everything from classic kids fantasy like Wizard of Oz to intense sociopolitical historical dramas.
