Great points in this - but NGL, I really can count on two hands the people I've known that really understand me in my life. Even those who claim to, and who love me and support me, they still aren't "comfortable" with me or my choices - depending on who I'm with at any given time - or if I'm with anyone at all.

I've learned not to care. Truth is, the queer community has often been less accepting of me than the straight community - at least i n my progressive corner of the world. I'm just me, and whoever doesn't like it, that's not my problem.

I'm also happy to see that the younger generation tends to get it more... BUT the younger generation is really good for "you're not queer enough" which is bullshit. Ah, it's fun... but you know what, I'd still rather be me dealing with this shit, than forcing myself to be someone I'm not. I hope others feel that way too. xo

I can't find the post but it said something like "biphobia will have bi women believe that society wants them to be lesbians, and lesbophobia will have lesbians believe that society wants them to be bi, but the truth is society doesn't want you to be bi or lesbian. they want you to be straight" or something like that. I saw it for the first time years ago and it's stuck with me because this mindset will genuinely resolve so much of queer infighting.

Allosexual queer people will believe that society wants them to be ace and aces will believe that society wants them to be allosexual queers, and the truth is society wants you to be allosexual but only sexually attracted to the right gender in the right way.

Trans men will believe that society wants them to be nonbinary, and nonbinary people will believe that society wants them to be binary trans, and the truth is society wants you to be cis.

And the thing is, there's some truth to "I would be more accepted if I was [this queer identity] instead of [that queer identity]," because there are groups of people who will want you to be a different queer identity. There are people who want their lesbian daughters to be bi because then they have a chance of marrying a man. There are allosexual gays who want to be ace because at least then they wouldn't be sexually attracted to their own gender, which is dirty and gross and wrong. There are people who want their trans male friends to be nonbinary because they think men are all evil.

Except there are also people who would rather bi women be lesbians because dating men makes them a traitor to the queer community, or aces who want to be allosexual and gay because if they can't be attracted to the opposite gender at least they'll be attracted to someone, and people who want their nonbinary friends to be binary trans because nonbinary people are made up and stealing resources.

Society at large doesn't want you to be any queer identity. They have a very narrow idea of what you should be, and so many ideas and rules telling you what you shouldn't be. And sometimes, people unlearn some of those rules but not others, depending on who they're around while forming these opinions. Some people will unlearn exorsexism but still drink the "men are evil" juice. Some people will unlearn homophobia but not amatonormativity.

So, sometimes queer people say things like "People would accept me more if I was [different queer identity]." And sure, some people would accept you more if you were that other identity. Except some people would accept you less. Maybe your parents would accept you more if you were bi instead of lesbian, but your friends would say being bi makes you a traitor.

And in the end, it doesn't matter, because there's way to win. "More accepted" is a very relative term. More accepted by some people, sure, but you won't be really be accepted unless you're not queer.

There's a lot about My Hero Academia that would be so good if it was good. But the biggest gap between how good something is and how good it could be is probably Himiko Toga.

In theory, Toga's existence is a criticism of hero society wrapped in a neurodivergence allegory. Toga's Quirk is creepy and gives her "deviant" urges. So she's just told to suppress it, mask, act normal. For the love of god, just be a good girl.

But she can't. She's not "normal". When Toga reaches her breaking point, begging for her parents to accept who he actually is and not what they want her to be...and they reject her. In the end, she runs away from home. Eventually, she gets picked up by a supervillain preying on similar rejects, creating a sense of community among them so he can direct them to his own ends. None of which would have been possible if they hadn't been rejected in the first place.

But I left out the times Toga attacked people to drink their blood. We know for certain that she stabbed one of her classmates (that she had a crush on) and slurped his blood with a straw, and we're told that she's the primary suspect in several bloody murders. Also she attacks our heroes not just because her new friends are hostile to them, but because she wants to drink their blood too. Toga's not just weird, she's dangerous.

Toga's "deviant" urges aren't just things she wants to do that polite society thinks are weird or gross. She's not a cute vampire who sucks your blood and leaves a vampire hickey; she drank her first crush's blood by cutting him with a box cutter and sucking blood out with a straw. Her deviancy has a body count.

Toga's parents aren't being insensitive when they call her a monster; they are stating the truth.

On its own, this turns Himiko Toga from a sympathetic neurodivergence allegory—one where Toga is isolated because she doesn't fit in the restrictive box her parents and teachers want all kids to fit in—into a horror story where allegorical neurodivergence is the monster. And that's just gross.

And it's not just neurodivergent people who get shafted. Toga is bixexual, but her attraction to women fits just about every predatory lesbian trope out there, with the bonus that her Quirk makes her a literal predator.

I don't want to say everything about Toga is bad. But a lot about her is, and she could have been so good if she was written better. Or if she was written mostly the same and the later arcs acknowledged the flaws in MHA's society enough to make her seem sympathetic even when she murders people to drink their blood.

december 2024 wrap-up - comics / manga

this month i read six (6) comics and manga.

fullmetal alchemist volumes 15-18 by arakawa hiromu 📖 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

i finally finished fullmetal alchemist! and it's so fucking good 😭 i can see why so many people recommend it to people just getting into manga as well - i think it's a very good "baby's first manga" if you're unfamiliar with the medium.

because it's so deep the end of the series there's not a lot i can say about what i liked without spoiling the whole thing, so i'll be very brief and very vague. i think the ending was really satisfying; i think it's the perfect balance of just open-ended enough that you can imagine so much more happening after the end but not so open-ended that you feel lost. as always, the art (especially the art in the fight scenes) was amazing. very gripping writing - i read these late at night but did not at all feel compelled to put them down and wait until the morning.

x-men: the manga: remastered volume 1 by hiroshi higuchi 📖 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

there's not too much to say - it's essentially just the first half of the first season of x-men: the animated series adapted into a manga. but it's a really good adaptation! i really love the specific style that the artists use. it's a certain type of manga / anime art style that i feel like you saw a lot in the 90s and 2000s that i really like. and even though multiple artists worked on this, their styles blend together pretty seamlessly. i don't think you'd really notice the shift in art unless you were looking for it.

i love elfquest a whole lot <3 yes its very stupid at times and yes its aged very poorly at times but its so much fun. i love these bixexual polyamorous commies so much.

something about this volume - idk if at this point in elfquest's production they switched to digital art, or if its just a shift in art style generally, but it's a lot more heavily shaded than it was previously and i don't think it translates as well to black and white as the prior volumes did. it's just really noticeable to me idk.
