You’ve heard people call money "clams," but did you know during the Great Depression people actually paid for things with clamshells in some places? 💵 On October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed, jumpstarting the Great Depression. After the crash, people rushed to banks to withdraw their savings before they were lost. 💰 Paper money was in short supply, so communities improvised. In Pismo Beach, California, the Chamber of Commerce and merchants issued clamshells like these—partly as a joke, an partly as a real stand in for paper money. 💸 Each piece was shell and each was signed on the front and on the back. The shell marked "Restwell Cabins" is dated March 8, 1933.
