thanks to the valiant and much appreciated efforts of the mighty REAL ONE @biturret, my unity game project is back in business! im feeling better about devving these days which is nice, although school and money are really big stressors atm.

ive made some progress on the twine project- branch 2/3 of part one is almost done! for the unity project, im currently working on making sprites and spritesheet animations for the two main characters. i have very little experience animating for games, much less doing pixel art animations, so this is interesting and will be a learning experience.

after this first batch of the important stuff is done and i’ve got it rigged up in unity, i’ll work on some rudimentary level background/environment and object sprites. i don’t know yet if i’m going to do tiled environments but it might make things easier.

During a brief scene in Tales from the Borderlands, Athena shows Fiona some of the expanded capabilities of her pistol, teaching her how to make use of its elemental capabilities to solve puzzles. While mechanically a very simple addition, by spending a full scene on this moment, the game is able to bring it back during high tension, timed sequences later on with no introduction. Even if players make a mistake during these moments, the game has ensured that they are aware of the new mechanic, and that they should be able to discern its use in future point-and-click adventure moments.

P: ...is the purest, most perfect cinnamon roll?I’m gonna be real there’s not a lot of contenders here. My first thought was Lundí, the tropical craftsman bird-elf, because she is just one of the only genuinely good people that’s not also an egomaniac. However the winner is Selene, my angel of Judgement, because she’s literally perfect (don’t worry she’s cool about it). You’d think there’d be more, but nope. It’s lonely at the top.

E: ...is the most emotive?That’s a great question! Maybe Darren, because he’s so stressed out that he can’t control his face, but I think this is gonna have to go to Victrola, a robot that definitely isn’t based on Junkrat but in a jazz fedora. It’s mainly because emotive has the connotation that the person isn’t deeply ashamed of the emotions that they’re expressing, and Victrola have a scrap of shame in their body.

N: ...needs way more attention from me?hmmm, I’d say Dahlia. I love her and want her to be one of my “main” ocs, but she was recently robbed of her own choose your own adventure story because I turned it into a Fate campaign.

I: ...tends to idolize people they shouldn't?Oi yoi yoi--I’m gonna preface this by saying that exactly zero of my characters have good judgement (except Selene, but that goes without saying). I mean, KC will literally follow anyone that seems half-competent without a thought (literally), but I wouldn’t call it “idolizing” because they also literally have the memory of a goldfish. I’m gonna say Yvonne, cause as a radical feminist and a sexist, anyone that she looks up to isn’t someone that’s worth looking up to.

ugh she probably has a ton of ayn rand books.

S: ...has the strongest spirit?Oh that’s a good one. I don’t want to say Selene, because I keep talking about her (I mean to be fair she literally willed herself from being a succubus into being one of the most powerful angels of protection out there) and she’s not really one of my “main” ocs. Of the ones I joke around with more often, I’d say Colton. I mean she’s not going to let anything get her down--death, the dark side, betrayal, being trapped in carbonite for 27 years, her girlfriend ignoring her--nothing.

I don't know if you've done this before (and if you have apology lmao) but how come you named the characters what you did? Are there specific meanings, or did they just sorta sound right?

Ooh I have NOT talked about this! This is gonna get long:

(Miu and Hart’s origins are going to be disappointingly lame, you are warned)

Miu 

Here’s a not-so-secret secret about Miu: she started life as a Naruto fan character. Much of her backstory/plotline was the same, and I picked her name because it means, as I understand, beautiful feather in Japanese. She was supposed to be very pretty and had a theme of feathers. It worked perfectly.

When I decided to use her for original stuff, I was so attached to the name (one of my favorites I’ve ever used, if I’m being honest) that I couldn’t change it. I ended up building a language (Yuahi) around it. I can’t remember exactly when I decided her full name was Miudana. I just kind of picked something that sounded right. 

All of her family members still exist from the fanfiction, but I made up completely different names for them. I have a penchant for inventing names. They weren’t anything special, though I did agonize over them (Himakari and Yumari especially) because they have to sound JUST right to me.

Hart

I’m not gonna lie here. In my Naruto fanfic (lmao...I’m sorry, this is both embarrassing and hilarious to me), Miu was paired with Shikamaru. I wanted to create a new character out of their interactions, because I liked them (and honestly still like them now, shockingly). Unfortunately for me, the whole deer thing Shika’s got going on was kind of a big part of Miu’s story. I wasn’t sure how to get rid of it at the time (and really liked the deer/wolf thing...like lion and the lamb), so I gave this new character the name Hart as a placeholder. I figured I’d change it later.

Clearly, that didn’t happen. I got really attached to the name and started naming other characters with the same theme: after animals. By the time I was really getting into the story, I had created this world where people were named after the animals they could change into. It had become a plot point and massive worldbuilding thing. Changing it would have meant a massive overhaul.

And did I mention I like the deer/wolf theme?

(In defense of myself, Hart has kept....basically nothing from his early days. Even those interactions I built him out of are pretty much gone or changed beyond recognition. His only Shika remnants are the deer thing and laziness. From that, he could also be based on Beau from Animal Crossing lmao.)

Brush, Carcajou, River, Fawn, etc

All named after their respective animal affinities. Brush for the brush tail of a fox, Carcajou for another name for wolverines, River for river otter, Fawn for baby deer...you get the drift. I just sort of picked animals that I thought fit the personality I was going for and then found suitable related words for names.

Karma

Sigh...okay, Karma was another fan character back in the day. She’s actually a conglomeration of two. I won’t get into them (unless somebody wants me to lol). But I just liked Karma as a name. Ended up naming her Carmena because I wanted Karma to be a nickname.

Gideon

It sounded right for him. He’s also kind of named after Gideon on Criminal Minds because I really like the character. It’s a good name. It’s origin and meaning is also hilariously unlike my character. Bonus irony. 

Nickname of Pigeon for my own amusement.

Tam

Also a name I intended to change, because my friend has a character named Tam. But it stuck. I should know better by now.

Everyone Else

All other names are purely made up. I like creating names, trying to make them sound legit...it’s the part of me that’s obsessed with culture and language lol.
