The Unforgiving Spirit of Malört: A Chicago Tradition
The Unforgiving Spirit: Malört Malört is, in one word, unforgiving. This unique spirit, crafted from neutral grains, wormwood, and a hint of sugar, delivers a flavor profile that can only be described as akin to sucking on dandelion juice through a straw made of car tires. Yet, paradoxically, it possesses a certain allure. Its intensely bitter taste is herbaceous with a touch of citrus,…

went to marshall’s to do my obligatory halloween decor check & was going to buy some ice cube trays for those big cubes yknow but then the line was sooo long which it does tend to be at a marshall’s so i was like “surely the grocery store next door that i am going to next has ice cube trays” so put the tray back & went to the grocery store. of course the grocery store did not seem to have ice cube trays anywhere so despite it all i had to go BACK to the marshall’s and go back to the kitchen section and get back in line because i decided i do actually really want to have those big square ice cubes. for my beverages. also there were some really cute throw pillows in the halloween section but we DONT need more throw pillows in this house. there are already several and the couch is not big enough for more
#also i went to the liquor store & got more wine 👍 and a new aperitif to try!#i was there for a looong time trying to decide what to get bc a lot of aperitifs just say ‘herbs’ and it’s like ok. but what kinds.#what does it taste like.#chatpost#i had a good one the other day when i went to dinner with my friend but i didn’t actually pay attention to what it was called. like a fool#i was also sooo tempted to buy some other bitters flavors but i was already spending too much money :/

Slow Burn & Liquor goes down bitter sounds like what Bird cage could have been if inko hadn't died. In a weird way.
Since I can't imagine inko being fully ok with what izuku is doing with his free time. AFO of course doesn't care as long as his precious boy is not getting hurt
It definitely is a possibility, as AFO may not have a maid cafe but likely if Inko lived she definitely be worrying. And AFO minimum is, at long as he ain't getting hurt then we Gucci. Inko would have reeled in AFO behavior if lived since she has a say in how Izuku is raised.
But if Izuku is depressed as heck he definitely be staying closer to home which AFO just can't resist. Like if he can keep his family as close as possible he would even if had to create some job so his wife isn't about to snap at him. Inko the only one making sure this family stays at least somewhat stable and normal.

Pick three people and make them a cocktail/mocktail with your choice of ingredients 😊 can be existing cocktails or new ones based on flavours/aesthetics you might want to give them 😊
Let's go w you, @myhusbandharryhamilton and @petitmonde
Jiji gets passion fruit and orange juice, a bit of yuzu and vodka (and if she doesn't like citrus then she also gets an apology)
Eli gets pisco, strawberry liquor, white cacao liquor, lemon squeeze and rose tonic
You get green tea, apple, ginger and gin
#I've had all of those cocktails combinations and love them but ofc they all work very well without the alcohol too#... except eli who would probably need to replace the liquor w juice and maybe some angostura bitter so it's not way too sweet#replies#astronomy nerd (affectionate)#juno🪐

Today I bought this
Described as tasting like "the devil's taint sweat", "a condom filled with gasoline", and "pencil shavings and heartbreak", Jeppson's Malört is famously maligned and beloved. By outsiders and Chicagoans, respectively.
I've been curious about this stuff for a long time, but with no plans to go to Chicago anytime soon, it wasn't looking likely to get a taste. It might be changing in more recent years, but I'm pretty sure it's still difficult to find this stuff outside of the windy city. The inland northwest wasn't a place I expected to find Malört, so I accepted the slightly high price for the bottle I snagged.
Malört is the Swedish word for wormwood, the liqueur's main ingredient. When Carl Jeppson emigrated from Sweden he began brewing and selling his favorite bäsk liqueur recipe door to door as a medicine (like just about every other type of alcohol back then lol). Since then, it's become a rite of passage for anyone calling Chicago home to sample one, two, three shots of the bitter stuff.
I kinda want to break down my thoughts about Malört, having heard a decent amount about it from the YouTube channel How to Drink, and now tasting it myself. I've never really done this kind of thing so let's see how much I embarrass myself lol
The nose is straight up gasoline. Not as intense as the real stuff, more like gasoline one room over. It would be extremely off-putting to someone not expecting this, and I imagine watching people's faces crumple in disgust is half the fun.
The first taste is surprisingly sweet. Malört clocks in at 35% ABV, 70 proof. Despite only being just short of a full proof spirit, it doesn't taste as such. Most liqueurs range from 15-25% ABV (11% in the case of Aperol!). That sugar really blunts the impact of the ethanol.
The evolution of flavors is quick, a mouth-filling burst of grapefruit pith without the citrussy oils from the rind. It is violently bitter, especially if you're not used to drinking things like black coffee or grapefruit juice. The ethanol comes through shortly after, but is still blunted by the sugar. Beyond that, it's kinda like chewing on Nintendo Switch cartridges.
The aftertaste lasts. And lasts. And lasts. Not washing the flavor out of my mouth with something else, Malört stays on my tongue for a half an hour easily. Unfortunately, the one complaint I have with this is that there's very little else going on in terms of flavor. It tastes like wormwood from start to long, withering finish.
So, do I think Malört deserves the title of worst liqueur ever? Nah, not at all. I actually quite like it. But I'm someone who actually likes grapefruit, black coffee, and negronis. I find bitter to be a very interesting flavor that doesn't get enough of the limelight. It's why I prefer Coke over Pepsi. I DO think that Malört will be horribly vile to MOST people, and non-adventurous eaters/drinkers QUAKE AND PRAY TO THEIR VARIOUS GODS at the thought of such a bitter drink. I'm personally on the side of the Chicagoans.
I'd recommend grabbing a bottle (if you're of legal drinking age, of course) if you see one. Scarcity should be the only thing keeping you from trying Malört, because even if you don't like the taste, watching other people's reaction to it is well worth the money.
#devin wrote something#and he hates writing#but this was fun because of how interesting the subject is#malort#Malört#Jeppson's Malört#review#my thoughts#bitter#liquor#liqueur

Emily's "Use Up My Leftover Mixers" Cocktail:
3 oz of that weird gin that I'm trying to get rid of as fast as possible
2 ish oz of schweppes tonic water
Wanted to use more tonic water but that bottle ran out, so also used another 2 oz of fever tree tonic water
However much is left of that guava juice that i opened forever ago
Some orange juice leftover from when I was sick and I'm not going to drink it on its own but there's so much of it left still
At this point the glass is full, so drink some to make space in the glass for ice. When you taste it, realize there's something missing so just try throwing in whatever you've got lying around. My inspiration was "first things I saw on the top shelf of my fridge"
Like a little vermouth because i forgot what it tasted like so I took a sip and was like, yeah sure whatever
A few splashes of orange bitters because I'm so obsessed with it I've been adding it to every drink i make
#I DIDNT REALIZE UOU COULD GET BITTERS AT WALMART!!! i got the first bottle of just ''aromatic bitters'' whatever the fuck that means.#i got it at the liquor store and it was like $15 and then at walmart it was only $7 WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#so now i have both:)#for context. pennsylvanias liquor laws are INSANE like. one of the strictest states in the entire country#its gotten better recently but still not great like you can only buy hard liquor at state owned Fine Wine And Good Spirits stores.#but those stores CANT sell beer.#and then some places like grocery stores have recently been allowed to get a license that lets them sell beer and wine but only between#certain hours and they still can't sell any spirits#but anyway it all loops back to apparently walmart can sell bitters because theres a low enough alcohol content ?#and i think SOME walmarts have a license to sell actual alcohol but not the one near me.#emily.docx

And don't forget those of us who can't drink for medical reasons but still enjoy cocktails and alcohol! Dealcoholized beers are getting more common and diversified depending where you are (they have a small amount of alcohol but should be below 0.5%), and you can even find replacement liquors if you miss the bitterness of strong alcohol (like fake aperitivo)
#my main problem with mocktails is balancing the sugar and introducing the kind of strength and bitterness that i usually look for#bc i genuinely love hard liquor...#bitters can also be a nice way to add that alcohol flavor without increasing the alcohol percentage too much#but plz if you have non alcoholic options PLEASE have one thats not sweet 😭#but seriously im a big dealcoholized beer fan now i always have a pack#and its much cheaper than actual booze
