I'm starving, darling//Let me put my lips to something//Let me wrap my teeth around the world
[edit: thanks to all the love on this piece (which was just the WIP until now) I finally got the motivation to finish this after two months! Thank you to anyone who enjoys this for giving me the strength to finish this]
man it baffles me how everytime hozier releases music people still seem to fail to grasp that his artistry is extremely politically charged.
like this is the man that got famous from a song criticizing the church for its hypocrisy that has a music video explicitly calling out homophobia. since the beginning of his career hes been making music that explores themes of leftist activism, particularly in the context of ireland and its colonial legacy alongside vocally lifting up the black voices and artists that inspire his music. and yet still im seeing people take unreal unearth, an album that is very much about both the failings and beauty of society through a very political lens and make it about their shows!!! thats so fucked
There's something at the tip of my tongue about the parallels between Jackie and Wilson and Who We Are
How the narrator of Jackie and Wilson wants to run away with a woman that he's carved out of his imagination based on a brief interaction. How they would try the world, but good god it wasn't for them. So they run away from it into a fantasy world where they live by their own rules.
And then comes the narrator of Who We Are, who dreamt his whole life of finding someone who would hold him like water or like a knife, only to find that running away from the world will only get them so far, since "the hardest part is who we are". And only to find out that the "phantom life" he's fantasized about is actually just that: a phantom. And its absence sharpens like a knife
See my favorite artist's reaction on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride? Very cutesy, very mindful, very demure. See how it doesn't seem like he got coerced to get into the ride? It screams grace, it screams chivalry, it screams bravery. Be like him, please. ☺️✋
y'all are cowards for using the verses of "eat your young" for romantic dreamling fics instead of using the chorus for a fic that grapples with hob gadling being a hedonist who has always valued his own survival above anyone else.
