@bitchwhoyoukiddin and @amidalleia, I greatly enjoyed that you both mentioned Joan Baez songs one after the other in my notes, and thought you might enjoy that too <3
[Image description:
A screenshot of two notes from tumblr user bethanyactually's activity.
The first reads: "bitchwhoyoukiddin reblogged your post 'I love u narrative songs [three pink sparkly heart emojis] Too many generic…'" The tags on that reblog read: #lily rosemary and the jack of hearts #the joan baez version #first song I ever memorized
The second reads: "amidalleia reblogged your post 'I love u narrative songs [three pink sparkly heart emojis] Too many generic…'" The tags on that reblog read: #house carpenter #it's an old scottish ballad but joan baez's version is the best

Christmas Eve is where we get creative but also repetative? Before my shrimp allergy presented, we'd do shrimp in garlic butter, some salads, and pie. But after, we've done a baked potato bar. That way it's filling but not TOO filling because we have the big meal the next day. Christmas day breakfast tho, we usually do eggs, bacon, and sweet potato (southern style) biscuits.
I have to admit i thought this just meant like, a smorgasboard of potato. Like a salad bar, but for potatoes. But I realise you probably mean some sort of potato loaf? See this is still so unrelatable.

The biggest, most heartfelt of thank you’s to the lovely and talented angel, @bitchwhoyoukiddin who bound some of my fanfics and sent them to me as a book?!?! This is so amazing. I adore it!!!
Thank you 😊❤️❤️❤️
It’s crazy to think I’ve written enough this year to constitute a book of stories. 🫢 And that people read and enjoy them.
I’ve proudly added it to my bookshelf.

I noticed stuff like this during my Magnum rewatch. Cops are terrible, in general if not outright crooked. Military people are individually ok but the brass/system is usually evil or complicit. The guys are physically affectionate w/each other.
YES
Like the subtext (and sometimes out-right text) is almost always that individuals may help you but institutions are bad.
(And yeah, it was a lot easier to find friendship on a lot of the older TV shows.)
@meowlizziemixer reblogged your post and added:
Need to point this out to my grandma... 🤯
:D good luck
@bitchwhoyoukiddin reblogged your post and added:
also, women are incredibly competent across the board and all the people you saw on tv in the early 2000′s showed up at least once. In the case of Brian Cranston, three times!
I think I’ve only gotten to him once so far? *laughs* But yeah, the guest-stars repeat pretty often.
which is a little confusing considering how often characters are recurring, so there’s always a moment of am I supposed to recognize you, or pretend that I don’t?
I don’t recall many recurring cops though, minus Cabot Cove’s Sheriff of course, which says something right there.
(Seth! Was a lawyer on a stand-alone episode before they brought him back to be Seth Hazlitt. I’d forgotten that, until I saw that first episode again, and I spent the whole thing sort of waving at the screen like, wtf.)
The other thing I have always enjoyed about MSW is the age range. Like, the guest cast in any episode will have at least one person who is in Jessica’s general age range, (and usually it’s more than that), plus older and younger, and it’s so RARE to see TV shows that aren’t populated by indeterminately-30-somethings most of the time.
(And the quality of the guest casts! Such people! Dear lord. It’s great.)

but you can totally trust Angela Lansbury
💯
@jchance4d4 reblogged your post and added:
This reminds me, a lot of the discussion of police and copaganda recently has reminded me of how the PI and amateur detective completely disappeared from American TV in the late 90s-early 200os.
Very true.
It reminds me of the uh... Kinsey Millhone alphabet book series by Sue Grafton, how she made each book continuing on a timeline shortly after the first, rather than adapting it forward in time to match how long they take to write... which isn’t a terribly unusual choice for any long-running series, that it follow it’s own chronology rather than trying to keep it “current”
But also, her PI main character was such a product of the 1980′s, and the genre she was writing mostly also ceased to exist in books (though it didn’t completely disappear like it did on tv) by the 90′s/00′s that if Grafton had tried to have them running concurrently with contemporary times for publication, I’m not sure they would have worked for the audience in at all the same way.
Like, back on 80′s TV, (which I think was still, in some ways, influenced by the lingering after-effects of Vietnam, you can see it a bit around the edges when you watch even the lighter shows, as well as the continuing Cold War), even MacGyver or the A-Team had a combination of individual exceptionalism (because most of us can’t do what they do, which is true of Jessica Fletcher or Spenser & Magnum as well, obviously) balanced out by the inherent assumption that of course if you can you use that to help people. Like, it’s so obvious it never occurs to them not to! That’s what it is to be a person in the world!
But also you help because you know, for all it ought to be obvious, sometimes it isn’t, and authority is always more interested in being authority than being helpful.
And it skewed sideways when they made the protagonists part of that system by making most procedurals about cops rather than the amateurs, because the combination of ‘the system is bad’ and ‘individuals can be exceptional (because that’s mostly more interesting to watch)’ created this ‘rogue cop hero’ who bucks the system... but it always shows them bucking the parts of the system that are actually there to limit abuse of power rather than the parts of the system that limit their ability to help.
And some of it seems clearly to have been accidental, but some of it could not have been, not with how consistent and wide-spread some of those tropes are.

bitchwhoyoukiddin replied to your post “shirokou replied to your photo “Oh, to be a tiny cat on a big warm...”
@copperbadge Belated question. Have you tried a timed feeder for the cryptids? I have one and it's the difference between having my face stepped on at 6am and being able to sleep to my alarm. They make one with a cold pack if you use wet food.
I’m honestly not sure it would help. They’re the least food-motivated creatures I’ve ever encountered; they don’t care about 99% of the treats I offer them and only seem to be interested in wet food these days when it’s fun and new.
In the morning Dearborn will be ON MY ASS to wake up, get out of bed, time to start the day Dad, and I stumble out into the kitchen and fix them some wet food (a single-serving tub of wet food on a single plate). Polk sniffs it and wanders off, Dearborn sniffs it and either eats a few mouthfuls or immediately rejects it. This comes in the form of instinctively trying to “bury” it (cats bury food they’re done with to keep predators off their scent).
They clearly don’t care about eating per se -- they have a kibble bowl that’s always out, and they eat somewhere around a cup of food collectively a day. They just know that now it’s time to Be Awake, Dad.

Hello! I was just catching up on your YT videos and wanted to give you a quick heads up about something in your After We Collided review. The actress who played Karen in the 1st film, Jennifer Beals, is actually mixed-race with a black dad which she is SUPER open about and proud of. Glad they cast a darker skinned woman (they deserve all the roles too!) but the wording used was a smidge disingenuous. Love the reviews!
Hi! Thank you so much for this. I very much appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I’ve edited the description box on the video to reflect this information (it was much harder than it should have been to find resources on her talking about it! when I googled it, all the articles were about her playing bi-racial characters :/).
In any case, thank you so much for sending me an ask about this!
(and also for you support on my videos <3)

How are Pep and Snow doing? Is Pep up to speed with house rules?
Snow is sulking because she just got back from the vet (routine thyroid bloodwork), but her weight is definitely up and her coat is back to being soft and silky. So her general health is better and she’s grooming herself.
Pep is doing great with house rules. The other day I had the walk-in closet door open but I don’t like her getting into that crowded space with all its hidey-holes. I saw her about to follow me, said “don’t”, and she lay down by the door jamb, staying there until I was done and back out.
(Don’t is truncated from “don’t bite” and I’ve been able to generalize that command to everything from don’t jump on the counter, don’t try to steal snow’s food, don’t jump on her back because you’re jealous, etc). Impressively, she differentiates don’t from no, the latter being a direct refusal from me.
She adores being brushed and rushes over to the kitchen rug eagerly when I say brush. She gets the wriggles, but takes turns offering different sides and has even acquiesced to exposing her belly and back legs, where her fur is the longest (aside from her maine coon style ruff). If I stop too early, she’ll grab the brush and chase after me, squawking complaints.
Yesterday I was late for work because I left my old phone under a pillow and didn’t hear the alarms. The cats did, and both came to check on me, but neither attempted to rouse me when I rolled over and threw the blanket over my head. On the whole, Pepper is a very cooperative, amendable cat.

tagged by the wonderful @hondagirll -- thanks, Steph! 💛
last song: Stay by Lisa Loeb
currently reading: re-reading The Mark of Athena, the third Heroes of Olympus book, so I can actually finish the series after that which I somehow never did, and then read the new Percy Jackson book, The Chalice of the Gods. Also currently reading Frankenstein with Elliora for school, and I just put a hold on The Founding Myth, thanks to @katiedora mentioning it in the tags of this post.
last film: I am cracking up because I just realized what AMAZING film @pressdbtwnpages and I watched on YouTube this past weekend: Parent Trap IV: Hawaiian Honeymoon.
youtube
A while back, we realized we were both weirdos who loved that movie as kids and wore out VHS tapes watching it, and somehow we got to talking about it the other day and wondered if anyone had put it on YouTube and some wonderful soul HAD. And even better, it was still hilarious 35 years later.
currently watching:
the US version of Ghosts, which is thus far charming and entertaining
Percy Jackson and the Olympians, A+++
Dimension20's Fantasy High Junior Year on Dropout
Troy just watched S2 of Reacher, which is very action-filled and quippy and not entirely my thing, but I watched it with him and did enjoy getting to see Shannon Kook (aka Grant [Redacted]) in it
perpetually rewatching Elementary and Nancy Drew
currently craving: nothing in particular
currently consuming: coffee
three ships: Nancy/Ace, Percy/Annabeth, Josh/Donna
first ship: probably Maddie/David on Moonlighting, though I did think Bob and Linda on Sesame Street should get married, and I was REALLY into Kit/Nat in The Witch of Blackbird Pond. (hi, @ladytharen!)
favourite colour: sunflower yellow
currently working on: a couple of blankets I'm crocheting, thinking about my next text post edit for Nancy Drew 409, beta-reading some stuff.
tagging: low-key, no-pressure tagging Katie, Kelsey, and Doc whom I already mentioned above, plus some folks from my recent activity @bitchwhoyoukiddin, @floating-in-the-blue, @galathea-snb, @al-the-grammar-geek, @artemistiques, @duskylight, @ryeshept, and anyone else who wants to do this!

MIRANDA IS AN ACTUAL WITCH. :D
It is only because she promised Thomas (promised him in the moonlight where they both shone so bright they could have passed for stars) that she would never work her magic on James that Miranda holds back.
She loved her husband and while she was many, many (so very many) things, disloyal was never one of them.
So she doesn’t.  Her powers simmer under her skin when she sees him.  To lend him calm, to lend him peace, to even (and this she would never, ever do and is only tempted when she sees the blood he draws from others on his knuckles) erase the memory of the one he fights for.
But she promised, so she doesn’t.  Instead she lines his coat with lavender and murmurs the lightest of incantations over his tea and every night, without fail, she gazes up at the moon and whispers all her hopes and dreams while she traces runes in the small patch of sand beside her flourishing garden.
It won’t be enough, how could it be? There will never be peace for either of them.  She whispers the words her mother and her grandmother taught her and feels her power stretch and curl inside her and wonders if one day she’ll regret making her promise.
