UH OH YOU JUST OPENED THE FLOODGATES so the short answer is pretty much every major character but I am a high-effort bitch so let's do this: Taylor Hebert: jfc, I could probably hit a word count limit talking about Taylor alone. First you have the dumb as shit TINO (Taylor In Name Only) phenomenon where people just straight up SI as Taylor but pretend it's her and she's basically a different person wearing Taylor's skin like an ill-fitting suit. Then there's the Memetic Escalator Taylor interpretation where Taylor's Warlord era characterization is flanderized so hard that she turns into her world's version of Doomguy where her response to literally everything is ultra violence, mutilation and torture and she can totally beat up anyone you guys hahah coin sock goes brrrrr you go brutalize those totally deserving victims queen. And then there's shy, stuttering, soft spoken "useless lesbian" Taylor which is not as common but still, fuckin straight men and the way they infantize gay women. Taylor is perhaps the most consistently inconsistent characterization I've seen in fandom, it's fucking wild Lisa Wilbourn: Has two fanon settings. Taylor's best friend who exists solely to give exposition and get the "Stop Coil" subplot rolling (occasional gay subtext will be added in a way that feels fetishy) Or, the evil bitchy blonde who is first target of the SI. I constantly wonder if the people who write the frankly masturbatory SI's are aware that we can tell they're still bitter about girls not dating them in highschool. Brian: basically does not exist in fic aside from the occasional joke cause racism and also because of how popular wlw ships are in Worm fandom. you deserve better dude Alec: has a few token appearances in wormfic fandom that usually have him as the comic relief alongside Aisha, which might actually be for the best considering he's a rapist and the Worm fandom's uhhhh tendencies. Moving on- Aisha: prankster girl that alt!Taylor will adopt as a younger sibling. hopefully is not part of the totally-not-a-harem considering she's even younger then the rest of these teens Bitch: Another girl to fall into alt!Taylor's definitely-not-a-harem, but with more butch tendencies. Hitoshi didn’t really give a flying fuck about what others thought, mainly because most of the time people didn’t even want to be around him because of his “villain quirk”

But just because he didn’t care what they thought about him, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t fuck somebody up if they messed with you

Shinsou is a quiet guy for the most part, but he was super perceptive

So when he heard that the little ballsack haired toddler from class 1-A was spreading rumors about you, he was angry

You had no problem explaining to people about your home country of South Africa, especially if they asked nicely

But one day when you were walking past Class 1-A when school had just ended, intent on meeting your boyfriend outside to go walk to the park together, you heard Mineta spewing shit about you and South Africa

“Yeah they’re a bunch of savages over there! They literally hunt for food with spears and everyone is poor and they use goats as money.” Mineta said

You stood by the door to see what they were going to say before you chimed in and told them what South Africa was actually like.

“Mineta that’s literally cap and you know it.” Kaminari chimed in with a roll of his eyes. 

He had been spending so much time around you and Shinsou that he started even using your slang unconsciously.

It made you smile a bit.

“Kaminari you’re dumb as rocks. How would you know?” Mineta defended himself.

“Anyways, apparently because they’re so poor they steal a lot too. Maybe that’s why my jacket went missing after I was around (y/n)...Like I said they’re a bunch of savages, she probably doesn’t know any better.” 

Now it was time for you to chime in. 

“Why the fuck would I want your ratty ass jacket anyway? I don’t steal and that’s not what South Africa is like. Denki knows because I told him about it. I’m not poor, I just don’t flaunt my wealth, and if you really want to know I could buy your entire family with my own net worth.” You remarked, crossing your arms over your chest with a huff.

Bakugou sat in the corner watching the whole exchange with a small smirk on his face...he enjoyed confrontation too much.

“Oh and we do have supermarkets where we buy our food from.” You add as an after thought. “If you wanted to know about South Africa, you should’ve just asked like a normal person instead of spewing shit. Have a nice day.” You left the classroom after that a smile growing on your face as you heard Kaminari and Kirishima scold Mineta for talking shit behind your back.

Yeah...that was the last time he did that because after Shinsou heard what happened he found Mineta the next day and threatened him so bad he peed his diaper.

Tamaki was a pretty reserved guy and when you two began dating it surprised mostly everyone because you two were so different

Honestly, Tamaki literally looked at you like a goddess and it annoyed him when people were just plain ignorant

Usually when he was annoyed he would rant to you about it or Mirio or Nejire, and then he would go sit in a corner blushing about how he feared he was oversharing

You were upset at first but you quickly made friends with the Big Three and Leonardo Subarashi, who was also from South Africa. 

So it came as a surprise when one of your friends, Tsuki Vinsmoke started talking shit about your homeland even when two of her friends were from there

“They literally live in huts with dirt floors. Maybe that’s why they’re so dirty and poor.” Tsuki laughed with two of her bitch friends, standing right near you

You turned to look at her with a frown on your face, practically daring her to say something else.

“I don’t even know how those two got here. They don’t even have phone service over there.”

“Hey (y/n)?” She said a little louder, as you turned around again, placing your pencil down and momentarily ignoring your school work.

“What Tsuki?”

“Why don’t you wear African clothes? Like those weird scarves and cloths or whatever? Are you ashamed that you came from dirt poor people? I would be.” Tsuki wore a nasty smile on her face as her eyes seemed to sparkle with malice.

“There’s no such thing as African clothes Tsuki. People wear the same clothes here that they do in South Africa...why would I be ashamed of such a culturally rich homeland? I’m proud to be South African, and besides I’d suggest you do some research before you start talking to me about being poor, especially since I’m way richer than you.” You gave a fake sincere smile before glancing over at Tamaki and your friends who gave you a thumbs up as if to say Destroy her.

So you did...in the end you got sent to Principal Nezu’s office after you made her cry and she lied to your teacher saying you had threatened her life like a dirty savage

Tamaki had to hold you back with some help from Mirio before you decked her

Nezu didn’t really care and gave you a donut from the order that had been in his office before sending you back to class

Needless to say, Tsuki got suspended for being racist and perpetuating a hateful environment in the classroom and nobody else messed with you, not even her little friends who sucked up to you after Tsuki went on suspension.

Why would anyone even bother saying stupid shit about you when you were just as hot headed as your explosive boyfriend? I don’t know, but they did

Of course everyone from class 1-A was smart enough not to start anything, but it seems Monoma wasn’t as smart

The annoying overly entitled blonde from class 1-B, had started out by asking you simple questions about your homeland, things like:

“What’s it like there?”, “Is it always sunny?”, “Have you seen a rhino or lion before?”

Then they started getting kind of ignorant and annoying.

“Hey (y/n)? Can you speak African?”

“No Monoma because Africa is a continent made up of many countries, each with their own languages.” You explained, wasn’t he supposed to be smart? “What are you doing Monoma?” You asked, with a raised eyebrow as he started to make strange noises at you.

“Shit for Brains, leave us the fuck alone.” Bakugou grumbled from beside you after he finished chewing his food. 

“It’s you language right? Can you understand what I said?”

“No dumbfuck. You sounded like a dolphin.” You remarked as a few of your friends laughed lightly. 

“I’m surprised you understand...I heard your people aren’t very smart...you know products of their environment, it’s unfortunate really. I’m sorry that you lived in such poverty, but you should consider yourself lucky, now you get to live in dorms and sleep in a real bed and not on a dirt floor.” Monoma went on and on and you were growing increasingly annoyed as you friends sat there in shocked silence.

“You know what Monoma?” You said with a fake smile as you spun around. “I’ve never met anyone as ignorant and stupid as you. I’m not poor and I never was, I slept in a real bed with an actually comfortable mattress unlike the ones here, and I much smarter than you ever will be I speak five fucking languages and I can understand more than that in others. Would you like me to tell you to fuck off in another language since you can’t seem to understand Japanese?” You asked as you raised your eyebrows with your arms crossed over your chest, as if waiting for his answer. 

He stayed silent. 

“That’s what I thought. Maybe you are smart after all?” You added teasingly, watching him be dragged back to his table by Kendo.

Shota Aizawa never really had many friends, usually more laidback than others were comfortable with, but the ones he did have were the complete opposites of him

Hizashi and Shirakumo were loud pranksters, while you and Midnight were talkative and enjoyed messing with him.

Most of the time he ignored the pigheaded bully that was Sensoji, because he usually only picked on Shota, but when Sensoji realized that you were Aizawa’s real weakness, he started to hound you.

And Shota was NOT having that

It all came to a head after he battled against Shota during a training session.

“Your useless just like your quirk Aizawa.” Sensoji sneered at your boyfriend, glaring down at him. 

“Your nothing but a waste of space.” Sensoji added seeing the way that his insults didn’t really phase Shota.

“Hey leave him alone! What is wrong with you!” You intervened pushing the broad shouldered boy away from Shota.

“What are you that weak that you need your little safari ass backwoods girlfriend to save your ass?” Sensoji laughed along with one of his equally stupid Class 1-B classmates.

“Don’t fucking talk about her!” Shota yelled back, his eyes glowing as if it was a warning.

“Or what? It’s not like she’ll understand? People like her back in her country of Africa are stupid as fuck. They build their homes out of oversized tin cans and they don’t even have phones.” 

“Sensoji you’re the stupid one! Africa is... A CONTINENT NOT A COUNTRY!” Hizashi jumped in, activating his quirk halfway through his sentence.

“And they don’t live in tin cans.” Midnight added.

“I live in a nice home, one that’s probably bigger than yours. Just admit that you’re jealous of Shota and me and move on!” You pressed your finger into his chest on each word, glaring at him as if to say say something else and see what happens.

“Grow up!” Shota and Shirakumo added before Sensoji rushed away when he saw the teachers coming over to see what you all were arguing about.

“Yeah that’s what I thought! Run away like a little bitch!” You added with a growing smile.

“Language (y/n)!” Your teacher scolded, but even that couldn’t bring down your smile as you, your boyfriend, and your friends laughed about the incident.

You all still even joked about it years later.

Worm Liveblog #93

UPDATE 93: Counterattack

Last time Panacea and Glory Girl’s story reached a rather tragic end. It’s unlikely either of them will appear in this story again, unfortunately. Now it’s time to return to the story. Shall the Undersiders start planning their attack on Coil, now that they got a truce with the Protectorate? Let’s continue.

As much as I wanted to make it a focus, taking care of my territory was something I had to handle in my downtime.

Sure says something about the quantity and gravity of everything Skitter has to deal with that something like an entire territory with possibly hundreds of people in it is something to deal with in her downtime. That’s not the kind of thing you usually would say is secondary, yet here we are. This is followed by worries she’s not paying enough attention to her, and to that I can only say it’s something to actually be concerned about. Communities getting neglected often leads to resentment, and she currently is the only person in charge in this area. Everyone will judge her because of the lack of attention she gives them. Discontent in society will lead to rebellion, and the last thing she needs right now is a rebellion in her territory.

...

...although a rebellion brewing in her territory would be kind of an interesting thing to deal with, wouldn’t it? Maybe it’ll happen and it’ll be the focus of a future arc.

They all had gone their separate ways to do whatever they wanted, just to relax before tackling the very daunting goal for the next week. Skitter used her time to take care of her territory, Regent controlled people in his turf, Heckpuppy took care of her dogs, Grue and Imp tried to sleep. Well, more like they all tried to do such things, because in the end they didn’t. They had to give some thought to their plans.

With a hundred problems we needed to handle, we’d agreed the most important thing was to deal with the most inevitable ones.  There was no point in working out a complicated and involved attack plan against Coil if we didn’t wind up fighting him.  There was a point in dealing with the Chosen; they were bound to attack us at some point, regardless of how future events unfolded.  Better to take the fight to them.

Does this mean they’ll fight the Chosen first, because offense is the best defense? The Chosen are going to attack at some point in the near future, so may as well attack them first? I’m all for that, I am, but...I don’t know if they have time. I mean, the only reason why they’re considering attacking Coil is because Dinah is currently out of commission. That chance isn’t going to happen again. Do they have time to counter the Chosen and attack Coil, all in the span of one week? It’s not impossible, I guess, but it’s going to be...very difficult, to say the least.

But hey, looks like this arc will be about a preemptive attack onto the Chosen. I’m game. Them not having Hookwolf will make things a little easier. Maybe it won’t take as long as I’m thinking it will.

Apparently this is the day after they decided to attack Coil. Last night Tattletale, Grue and Skitter reunited to discuss strategy plans, the other three not being involved in the discussion.

“I wouldn’t have minded,” Imp said.  “I wouldn’t have anything to contribute, but I’d like to follow along.  And I can’t figure out my niche in the group with the trio being so… trio-ish.”

“Trio-ish?” I asked.

“Tattletale, you and my brother.  Making all the plans, you’ve got the nemeses…” Imp paused.  “Is nemeses a word?”

That’s the power of being the main characters of the story, Imp! But eh, it’s not like Grue and Tattletale have nemeses. Nemesii. Whatever. Tattletale does have Faultline, but Faultline has done nothing of importance for a long time. Grue had Shadow Stalker, and now she’s...not around. Isn’t she in jail? Skitter’s the one with a revolving carrousel of nemesiseseseses, by virtue of being the protagonist of Worm.

Although they’re aware three of their teammates have been brainstorming and having discussions they’re not privy too, they’re okay with that, enough to joke around in a moment that’s honestly kind of cute.

“Let’s quit and start our own group!”  Regent said, throwing one arm across Imp’s shoulders and gesturing dramatically with the other as he continued, “Regent, Imp, and Bitch, the Othersiders, a spin-off team.  And we’ll stick with Coil while the others turn traitor, and we’ll have this epic fight…”

Imp took his cue, “And Brian and I will go head to head, and it’ll end in this dramatic moment where he says something pretentious-”

“Et tu, sis?”

“And then I’ll say ‘Yeah, it’s me’ and finish him!  No mercy.”

They were playing off one another, joking.

And he calls me the dork?

Maybe it’s because I’m cherishing the rare moments of levity in this story. There’s so few moments where the characters can relax and mess around. Worm is a dark story, and for that reason such moments are rare...it’s a pity, really.

It’s planning time? Tattletale is here, Grue isn’t, and there’s no mention of Heckpuppy. The reason Grue isn’t around is because he needs to sleep, and this is a thinly-veiled jab at Skitter for not getting enough sleep. By now I’m sure she won’t get a night of good sleep at any point of Worm. So! Strategy meeting!

Mayoral elections are coming, oh boy. I don’t think that particularly affects the Undersiders, and Coil has agents working for him as mayoral candidates, anyway. It’s just another iron on the fire. Not worth doing anything about, in my opinion.

Next topic: Hookwolf’s group and Purity’s group are having trouble. Now that Hookwolf is gone, Purity would be the one to lead everyone, but that’s not going smoothly, it seems. Ideological differences, perhaps?

Apparently it’s that. Hookwolf may have been slandering Purity, and now people who believed everything he said will refuse to work under her. Also, capes like Stormtiger and Cricket want their turn as leaders and I’m not convinced that’ll happen. The point is that with the current dissensions and inability to unite, it’s a prime moment to strike. Yup, it is, but...really, is there time for that?

“Something to keep in mind,” I said.

“Something to exploit?”

I glanced at her in surprise, and she shrugged.

“Elaborate? You’re not suggesting we ally with them, are you?”

Do they have anything to gain from allying with the Undersiders? There’s no common threat now. I don’t really see a reason for villain teams to cooperate with each other.

Tattletale is proposing a truce; Imp completely rejects it on basis of having gone her entire life suffering the disdain of racists of all ages. I know truces and that kind of thing are necessary sometimes, but honestly, I’m supporting Imp on this one. I as a reader see no particular reason to ally with the Chosen or with Purity’s group in any manner, and the mere thought of working with them feels...gross. Again, no bigger threat. No excuse to ally with them.

Thank goodness, it seems the idea of possibly making a truce with the racist factions isn’t going to work.

Tattletale also brings up they have a truce with the New Wave hero faction, which is good. Doesn’t seem like she’s aware of what happened to Panacea and Glory Girl, or if she knows she doesn’t say anything. Mr. Wildbow takes the chance to set up the in-character reason to not look for her in the future.

Amy had crossed my mind as I’d reflected on the various encounters with the Nine, and I’d thought about going to look for her.  Having her in the group would be invaluable, no question.  Even touching base with her could leave us options if someone got hurt or if we needed resources.  That said, the major issue was that I couldn’t be sure she’d actually join or even listen, and we were trying to operate with certainties.  I couldn’t afford to go when it meant potentially wasted time.

Pretty unlikely she’d cooperate in any manner. Even if she did, she’d sabotage it in some manner or make it not be as useful as it should be. It took the agnosia miasma covering the city and threatening to kill everybody for her to cooperate with the Undersiders, all because of her rather black-and-white way of interpreting morality. Any requests for help would have been useless – leaving aside that she planned to leave Brockton Bay, anyway.

Thinking about Atlas reminded me of one thought I’d had during our downtime.  “It’d be fantastic if we could get a tinker in the group,” I said.  “Between Bakuda, Armsmaster, Mannequin and Bonesaw, I’m sort of starting to appreciate what they bring to the table.”

It’s starting to seem like tinkers are pretty useful for any kind of team, indeed. Even the Merchants had a tinker, even if she was...well...you know how she was like. Neither Purity nor the Chosen have tinkers, do they? But yeah, it’d be nice to get a tinker for the Undersiders. It’s not like they can put an ad or anything, though. Asking Coil to look for a tinker for the team would be a solution, but what they want is to attack him, no way they’ll ask him for help.

“You’re almost a tinker,” Regent told me.

He says that because Skitter is able to create stuff with her bugs and is generally quite versatile with them. Skitter wants more than what she’s capable to do, she wants someone who will open up a world of possibilities. That’s what a tinker is good for. Too bad there are no tinkers who are seeking to join anybody.

“It’s a shame that there’s not really any tinkers around that aren’t already committed. Unless you want to make a point out of recruiting Leet?”

There was a bit of a pause as we all considered the idea.

We simultaneously broke into laughter.

Oh. Right, that guy. He and the other guy are still alive?

In Regent’s territory, the Chosen have been causing havoc, and by havoc I mean petty defacement of buildings, just as a way to taunt Regent because he doesn’t have a way to counter them. What he does have is Shatterbird, who can blast the tags with sand until the walls are clean. It didn’t even take long. I wonder if this is the first time the Chosen have done this here. Can’t decide if it’d be petty or stupid to keep spray-painting his territory if they know Regent can clean it easily.

“Why spend a few hundred bucks on a sandblaster when you have a Shatterbird?  Who’s a good little power tool?”  Regent gave Shatterbird a pat on the cheek.  “You are.  Yes you are.”

Shatterbird must be seething with anger right now. I bet Regent says and does stuff like this often, he’s that kind of person. Not the kind that’d be always antagonistic for no reason, but the kind who’d casually do this if he feels like it.

It’s fitting for Skitter to ask Regent to treat Shatterbird with respect, but it still is kind of silly. Regent already gave a good reason to taunt and mess with Shatterbird – keep her emotionally drained to lessen the chances she breaks free – so there’s no really a reason to risk she getting away. The moment she escapes from Regent’s control; she’ll try to kill everyone in her way as retaliation for all this. Heck, even if she had been treated well, she’d do it for the fun of it.

As an idle thought, I noted that her teeth were in surprisingly good shape.  It made me wonder how the Nine took care of their teeth. Did they threaten some dentist and force him to do fillings and whitenings?  Or did Bonesaw handle that?  It was odd to think about.

Hah! What a time to be wondering something like that. The thought of the Slaughterhose Nine coercing a random dentist to clean their teeth and then leaving without major fuss is kind of funny. Nah, Bonesaw surely made sure the teeth don’t go into bad condition. She reinforced the teeth, it wouldn’t be surprising if she...I don’t know, implanted whiteners into them.

It’s time for a confrontation. There are several members of the Chosen around, and it doesn’t seem like any of them are parahumans. This should be easy.

A swarm of insects make everyone rush to the outdoors, trying to get away, giving Regent the chance to batter them with shards of glass in what must be a pretty painful experience. The point of this attack isn’t to kill, it’s to get them to stop bothering him. Not sure if it’ll work, but it’ll be a lesson learned for a few days, I’d say. It depends on if the leaders of the groups take this as a major insult or not. With some luck they’ll be all ‘that’s what you get for fooling around there’ buuuuut that’s unlikely.

Attacking the mooks is easy, the parahumans are the problem here – because yup, there are a few of those here. Rune, Night and Fog. Night is the one I’m worried about the most, I don’t think there’s a way to counter her, and if there is, they better think fast, because there’ll be retaliation for this attack soon.

Purity isn’t here – of course not, why would Purity hang out with the foot soldiers messing around? -- Crusader isn’t here...which one is Crusader, again? Well, it doesn’t really matter. There’s another parahuman, and it’s one I don’t think had been mentioned ever before.

Victor. He was a talent vampire, stealing people’s trained skills, keeping them if he held on to them long enough, and leaving that person temporarily bereft of whatever skill they’d spent their lives learning.  People like him had a tendency to pick up martial arts, parkour, weapons training and other combat skills.  He tended to pair up with Othala, the girl who could grant powers, meaning Victor also had super speed, super strength or invincibility.  If he was wounded, she could give him regeneration instead.

But her power demanded that she touch whoever she was using it on, and it limited her to granting one power at a time.  If he had invincibility, it meant he didn’t have super strength, pyrokinesis or any of that.

Sounds useful. If I understand this correctly, does this mean the people who got their talents stolen don’t lose them permanently? Even if Victor keeps those skills? How many different skills can Victor have? Unlimited, or is there a limit?

Well, it’s less impressive when Skitter is able to tie him with the silk, making him fall to the floor and keeping him down for the count. Night and Fog are the big threats, anyway. The current idea is to bait them somehow. They’re formidable opponents, that’s a dangerous plan.

Our last run-in with Night and Fog had been ugly.  That had been months ago, and we’d basically lost.  I wasn’t content to simply lose, though.  I’d replayed the scene over and over in my head since it had happened, doubly so since I’d found out Coil’s power.  If he could create alternate timelines and choose the results, and if he’d used his power to save us, what had happened in that other timeline? Had we died?

Definitely. I don’t doubt in alternate timelines they died.

Countering them is pretty difficult. Night is a tough one because, although her transformation doesn’t work when her opponents can see her, she has a myriad of ways of forcing them to be unable of seeing her. Fog is...well, a gas. Have you ever tried to contain large quantities of gas without specialized tools? Regent tries to block him with a glass barrier, yet he manages to seep through cracks. Right now it looks like it’s matter of time before Night and/or Fog manage to do something that’ll give them the advantage. Good thing Skitter seems to have a plan...whatever it is.

“This power is so hard to use,” Regent complained.  “So much to focus on.”

“You’re doing fine.”

“I’m doing fine because she’s helping.  I think.”

Really? I didn’t expect that. Why would Shatterbird try to help? Self-preservation, perhaps? I thought she’d try to resist as much as possible so Regent had higher odds of dying so she’d be set free, but I suppose she’s not sure she won’t die first or something. I imagine if necessary Regent will use her as a meat shield. Meanwhile, Skitter tries her silk strand restraints strategy on Night, it doesn’t work very well.

At least she’s able to stop the smoke grenades and her cloak, thanks to those same silk strands. Night’s remaining way of forcing her to look away is with a flashbang, and that works. It takes no time at all for Night to transform and rush towards the rest of the Undersiders, while Skitter tries to help with her swarm. I don’t know if things are going well...it seems to me the Undersiders aren’t doing much progress. It’s matter of time before things go pear-shaped.

Night gets to where the rest of the Undersiders are, ready to attack. It wouldn’t take her long to kill anyone if given the chance. Thankfully, she doesn’t get to attack, thanks to Skitter, so she runs into the closest place she thinks will help her transform. Although she’s out of Skitter’s sight, she still doesn’t transform, until she’s knocked out.

Imp stood over Night, holding a taser.

I completely forgot about her! So that’s why Night couldn’t transform, Imp was there. Now Skitter and Imp shall stand around, taking turns to blink...leaving Tattletale and Regent over there to fight everyone else by themselves. Welp. Even though Night has been dealt with, I’m not sure this is on the Undersiders’ favor.

Oh, nevermind, they’re moving Night towards the rest. Over there Fog is kept inside a box, and Rune isn’t in a state to fight. The Undersiders win, the enemies are embarrassed. That went well! Better than I expected, that’s for sure. Time for a serious conversation! Starting with Tattletale telling them to get out of their territory, and Rune retorting the Undersiders took the entire city as their territory. Iiii’m pretty sure that was Tattletale’s way of telling them to leave the city, yeah.

Time for a show of strength – as if defeating them wasn’t enough, hah. Well, better to be safe than sorry, so Skitter gets intimidating and tells them they have them defeated in every way and deserve to take over the city. Also they’re getting taxed, the Undersiders till take everything valuable that’s in the base they had nearby. Okay then! Spoils of war for the victor--

“But that’s not enough, is it?  So there’s another tax.  We’re borrowing one of your teammates.”

The Chosen weren’t the only ones who looked shocked at the declaration.  I snapped my head around to look at Regent.  There was no surprise there.

Fuck them. They’d planned this, and they hadn’t told me.

Oh goodness! That’s unexpected. And looks like this is a plan Regent and the others agreed to without telling them. Tattletale must know too, I imagine. Interesting! And dangerous, too. Is there a guarantee whoever they borrow won’t betray the Undersiders whenever they can? Unless...

...unless what they mean with ‘borrowing’ is that Regent will control someone. In that case, it’s not a bad plan. Purity is going to take it as a major insult and may try to have their revenge, but yeah. It’s interesting and could be useful.

I wonder which one they’d take. Everyone has their pros and cons. Hard to guess which one would be the best option. Buuut that’ll be for next time.

Brockton Bay Antifa

Today in missed storytelling opportunities - why the hell does Worm not have an Empire 88 arc? Not only were they hyped but it felt like it was being very carefully set up, in ways that would be unnecessary for a purely affective bait and switch.  It fills out a naturally escalating sequence of challenges from ABB-E88-Travellers-S9, not that most people appreciate shonen power crawls as personally as I do.  Not just generic and tonal “expectations” were being set, but the sort of structural/thematic ones usually placed a layer deeper than the ones you deliberately fuck with (such that a reader can on second or third read notice them and go, so that was the plan all along!).  Consider the following timeline, call it Worm Prime: >You Are Here: Buzz 7.12, Taylor has just figured out that Coil kidnapped Dinah and is considering quitting the Undersiders  >in the course of their argument, Bitch and Grue call her on her hypocrisy in pretending like there is ethical caping in late capitalism: specifically, that she was fine working within a structure that lets Empire 88 run a chunk of the city as a fascist ethnostate >(somewhere in the course of this, we learn a bit about what Empire 88 actually do - more on that later) >even though they were originally against it, the ensuing moral game of chicken goads the Undersiders into agreeing to take down Empire 88 >however, because Dinah’s odds were so shit, and because they don’t trust Coil any more, they decide to come up with their own plan entirely distinct from either iteration of Coil’s  >Taylor agrees to stay with the Undersiders long enough to pull off this one plan >Coil agrees to this (they tell him to avoid risk of his interference) when he sees their original plan is good and Dinah gives it a better probability rating >the Chekov’s gun about why Dinah predicted Coil’s intervention as lowering their chances still gets fired eventually, as their plan goes wrong on a fluke anyway and they have to get Coil to intervene to save themselves one time even though he makes things even more messy from there, in some fun rapidly escalating Xanatos speed chess bullshit >the arc ends with Taylor making her decision about the Undersiders and trying to change the world that she makes after the Leviathan fight, but this time built up to thematically over the course of the whole arc.  This thematically as well as structurally leads naturally into the Coil arc, which pits the Undersiders against another guy with a plan to change the world, and a more sympathetic team.  Which leaves the Undersiders ultimately unrivalled in Brockton Bay in time to face their first larger-than-Brockton Bay threat, the Slaughterhouse Nine, etc... The fact that I don’t really know (or care) where to put Leviathan in this will probably strike some as sufficient explanation for why it doesn’t play out like this - that it’s supposed to be “unpredictable”, either for entertainment or “realism” reasons.  While I don’t buy one of three Biblically symbolic “Endbringers” whose existence is predetermined directly by the cosmic backstory explaining the whole setting as an avatar of the modernist radical contingency of the Event, any more than I buy the ensuing Hobbesian survival horror cliché that doesn’t resemble any real world disaster recovery I’ve ever heard of; in either case, the contingent was timed to interrupt something, and cut short some logical developments, over others, and that’s still worth thinking about. Despite being one of the better researched and more plausible depictions of neo-Nazis in pop culture, Empire 88 is weirdly depoliticized.  The text goes out of its way to never look sympathetic to them - they’re all personally among the worst people in the setting, just all around sadists who are cruel to animals and threaten teenagers in parks and kill indiscriminately in the wake of Leviathan, as if that’s why they’re racist - and the thuggish ones get a lot more screen time than the “respectable” ones - but for all the shock beats they’re given you never even hear about anything actually racist they do.  A sizeable part of the city is their ���territory��.  What does that entail?  Does the city make any accommodations for PoC fleeing that area (whose borders, as established in Buzz, are deliberately pushed and made unclear)?  Are there pogroms?  Lynchings?  We know from comments that Wildbow is smart enough to recognize rape as a not-apolitical form of realist grit; we also know that he thinks there are apolitical forms of realist grit, and the political ones should be avoided at least by people without the relevant “experience” (I disagree, but can’t blame him.  Of course, he didn’t have to make a neo-Nazi gang in the first place, or build them directly into the story’s thematic structure as the avatar of the political itself. Not that I want to make this into Woke Wolfenstein or some kind of heavy-handed progressive power fantasy.  Ideally this arc would have been written in 2012 like the original and dodged the bullet of EiffelArt avatars fingering themselves to it 24/7.  Actually, one thematic that would be interesting to weave into this would be the thing I saw one commenter mention about how E88 has more “heroic” coded powers than most of the villain teams (and “heroic” coded powers are mainly “military industrial complex” coded powers...), which would tie well into why Taylor doesn’t feel like she can be a hero or a villain, how the logic that “hero = system” is inherently fascistic, and the Undersiders or at least Taylor and E88 are caught in opposite instantiations of that dialectic (villains who overidentify with the system vs villains who oppose it in good faith, neither capable of identifying with the designation)... This might involve spending some time on their motives, maybe even an Interlude - and I understand the cynical pop-psych reasoning why dehumanization-depoliticization is a better pair than vice versa, but one thing we’ve seen in the last couple years is that this leaves you vulnerable to tactics as crude as a name change. If both this and my Star Wars headcanon read like progressive fix-it fics, I want to clarify that this really isn’t my intention.  While including neo-Nazis and depoliticizing them is kind of asking for it, I really don’t want to force my politics into everything I read.  These started as just attempts to fill plot holes or pacing whiplash, and yet they seem to make things more political of their own accord.  Why is that?   As someone who aestheticizes my own politics way too much not to feel conflicted about Benjamin’s famous motto, one of mine (which works pretty well as a summation of the project of rationalfic) used to be “Make Fiction More Like Reality/Make Reality More Like Fiction”.  If anything it’s the dialectical intimation of the possibility of the latter that’s missing in Worm.

Final Fantasy Influences in RWBY

So it’s no secret that Monty Oum was a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series. As someone who’s also a huge fan of the series I thought it’d be fun to explore a lot of the things I think RWBY drew inspiration from. There’s not really much of an order to this, just various things I’ve noticed. This is also just my opinion on things so don’t take it too seriously. (I won’t be including stuff from FF15 since that was not out yet at the time RWBY was started and the stuff similar to it are most likely coincidence.I’m also only counting the stuff from the core series as those are the ones I am the most familiar with.)

Gardens/Seed- Academy/Huntsmen & Huntresses

In both FF8, and in RWBY, the main characters start their journeys at an academy that specializes in the training of powerful mercenaries: SeeD and Hunters. They have a similar age range (15-19 in FF8. 17-21 in RWBY), and both schools have rigorous and dangerous exams that the main characters have to survive and pass in the beginning of the story. They both also have a dance in the relatively beginning of the story. They also both have a uniform that the characters wear on occasion.

Shinra Electric Power Company- Schnee Dust Company

Now I actually noticed something neat that I never noticed with Shinra, that they can be abbreviated to SEC, similar to how the Schnee Dust Company is commonly abbreviated to SDC.

In both RWBY and FF7, these two companies are powerful and villainous and have made their fortunes by mining a natural resource that is used for fuel, and to give people magical abilities. Both the SDC and SEC engage in military action (Turks and SOLDIER with the SEC and providing/developing mechs for the Atlesian military for the SDC), and experimenting on monsters (the Armored Gigas in the White trailer being a Geist Grimm experiment according to the manga).

Materia- Dust

It’s a naturally occurring resource in the world that is used to give the characters magical abilities and is crystalline in design. Materia is name dropped by Monty when explaining what Dust is.

AVALANCHE- White Fang

A terrorist group with a white and red banner that has a history of warfare with the evil megacompany of their worlds. Main characters from both series are members (or former) members of the group, and both had/have a large burly man as their leader. Only major difference is AVALANCHE is an eco-terrorist group and presented as heroes while the White Fang are a racial terrorist group and presented as villains.

Crystals- Relics

Four powerful macguffins that the protagonists and antagonists are both after that can give them a ton of power and can change the world.

Al Bhed/Viera- Faunus

Al Bhed are a minority group who face persecution and have a unique genetic trait. In FF10 and in RWBY one of the main characters is secretly of this ethnic group and has to deal with racist behavior from one of their team mates.

Viera are literally bunny girls. While the al bhed have more in common with the faunus in story, the viera are closer in appearance.

Summoning- Schnee Semblence

Now there are a lot of Summoners in FF but Monty was known for his love of FF10 and of Yuna and I think that’s who’s summoning ability Weiss’ abilities are based off of. Yuna is capable of summoning dead spirits that take the form of Aeons and uses them in battle. Weiss, and other Schnees, can summon enemies that they have killed and have them aid in combat. Yuna’s summoning and Weiss’ also seem a lot more of a closer bond then say, Rydia or Eiko’s  were or the ones were summoning is just a job class.

Aerith’s Death- Pyrrha’s Death

An extremely shocking and brutal death scene of a beloved female character that is used to spur the protagonists to action and kick start the larger segments of the story.

Sin-  Ancient Grimm

Not a lot of similarities, other then they ‘shed‘ smaller enemies and are huge and capable of decimating cities if they want to.

Uncomfortable Laughing Scene

Yeeeeeaaaah, those scenes are cringey. I took from it that Ruby was struggling to keep her composure at seeing something that reminded her of Pyrrha after watching her die and started to laugh obnoxiously to cover up her issues, similar to how Tidus had his uncomfortable laughing scene to cope with his own issues. Or maybe that Ruby scene was meant to be funny and bunny jackets are hilarious, who knows.

Auron- Qrow

Red and gray color scheme, drunks, and a father figure to the main character, alongside using a similar weapon as the character they watch over.

Tifa- Yang

A bare knuckle brawler who’s a childhood friend of the main protagonist, is the team mom, and objectively considered the ‘prettiest‘ character of the main cast. Both are also fans of butt capes, given Yang’s timeskip outfit and Tifa’s Advent Children outfit.

Kefka- Tyrian

Now this one’s a bit of stretch and I really hope they don’t pull a Kefka with Tyrian late on in the story but here we go.

They’re both the insane right hand of the (apparent) big bad of the story, both have a flair for the dramatics (Tyrian’s theatrical behavior during his fight scene and well, just look at Kefka). Both also have an insane laugh and boy do they like to laugh.

Quistis- Glynda

A blonde, glasses wearing combat instructor at a school for specialized mercenaries. Both wield a bdsm style weapon (whip/riding crop) and are proficient mages.

Zidane- Sun

A blonde monkey man who breaks the law a lot, has a sunny personality, and fights alongside a dark haired princess.

Ruby- Iris

Now I said I wasn’t going to bring up FF15 but this is a unique case. I think this is an instance of RWBY serving as inspiration for FF.

FF15 was in production between 2006-2016. Red Trailer came out in 2012, with Vol1 coming out in 2013. RWBY is very popular in Japan, and I don’t know if there is a way to learn when Iris was added to the game’s production.

Iris is the younger sister of the stronk fanservice character of the game, wears black and red, has a red hood, short black hair, is 15 years old, and grows up to be a famous Hunter; a daemon slayer after the time skip. She’s cheery and happy, and has an interest in mechanical things (her fascination with Lestallum and how it’s maintained). Iris is a hopeless romantic and fights with her fists.

Ruby is the younger sister of the stronk fanservice character of the show, wears black and red, has a red hood, short black hair, is 15 years old, and dreams of being a Huntress; a Grimm slayer. She’s happy and bubbly, and is mechanically inclined, alongside loving weaponry. Ruby doesn’t have an interest in romance and can’t fight without a weapon.

Weaponry

Weiss literally uses a gunblade, and Raven has an odachi. But other then that, most of the weapons in RWBY line up more with Lightning’s style of weaponry in FF13; a melee weapon that transforms and can take a gun form and also collapse for easier storage.

Costumes

Both FF and RWBY thrive on amazing looking costumes that are hella impractical and use way too many belts for a rl person to wear. But damn do they not look amazing.

Setting

Both RWBY and (most) FF have a science fantasy setting, with continents that look really silly.

Soundtrack

Both RWBY and FF love their hard rock and piano’s, and have amazing scores and soundtracks.

Fight Choreography

Saying Advent Children was a big influence on Monty would be an understatement. RWBY’s fight scenes are fast paced, hectic, and make gravity and the laws of physics its bitch. This is hard to explain in written format, so I’d recommend watching a fight scene from Advent Children and then compare it to one from RWBY to see what I mean.

Light v Dark Themes

Recurring theme in a lot of the older FF games, the forces of Light against the forces of Darkness. RWBY has the Light and Darkness Brother Gods myth, and they will most likely play a larger role in the future.

Party of Four

FF games traditionally have 4 (or 3) party members and oh hey would you look at that, RWBY has 4 members. Iirc Monty also said he based the team’s fighting styles off of his preferred rpg team line up. (If anyone has figured out what class Ruby is, let me know ^^)

Strong female characters

I think it’d be easier to name FF female characters who aren’t strong in their own ways. And the entire premise of RWBY is four strong women living their lives and stopping evil, alongside the slew of other notable female characters in the show.

Moon

The moon plays an important role in the stories of FF4 and FF8, and although the moon hasn’t done anything of plot importance, the fact it’s shown so frequently in scenes and is a prominent image in RWBY (alongside how its brought up space travel is still being developed in Remnant) I’m pretty sure it will play an important role in the future.

Parent Issues

A lot of the characters in FF have really bad parents, parent issues, or are orphans. A lot of the important characters in RWBY have really terrible parents, and their issues with their parents playing a role in each member of Team RWBY’s personal storylines. Jecht and Tidus’ relationship being the most famous example from FF of a strained child-parent relationship, and given Yang’s obsession and hatred of Raven, it seems the most likely place of inspiration (alongside Raven and Jecht being antagonists and being involved in the Deeper Lore of their respective universes, and of being members of a team with the parents of one of the other main characters).

So yeah, those are my thoughts about all the stuff I‘ve noticed in RWBY that could have been inspired by Final Fantasy. Hope you enjoyed reading this ^^.

A black model and her white fiancé were reportedly brutally beaten in an alleged racist attack by star Rugby players!

Top Model Mirriam Ngomani, 38, and her white German businessman fiancé Tobias Zehetleitner, 36, had been enjoying a night out at a casino called Time Square in Pretoria, South Africa, when they were reportedly targeted. A group of at least five white men allegedly attacked the couple around 3AM on July 11th, leaving her with broken leg and she suffered a broken shin. Her fiancé was punched in the face, knocked unconscious, and left with a swollen eye. They both went to Pretoria hospital where Mirriam will undergo surgery.

By the way, they are a super accomplished couple. She is known as the Naomi Campbell of South Africa and she is also known as the Catwalk Queen for her distinctive walk. Zehetleitner the chief executive officer of the charity TMT Sports Group, which was founded by his fiancée and helps poor children in townships.

  So here's what happened, according to Ngomani and Zehetleitner.

The couple said they were hanging out at the casino, holding hands, enjoying one another's company when they were attacked at the popular Time Square in Menlyn. Tobias said a man flicked a cigarette in his direction without any provocation.

"I asked what he was doing and he said, 'What is wrong with you? You're dating a baboon, a monkey?," Zehetleitner said, adding that the man was pointing at Ngomani.

Ngomani said one of the man's friends pulled him away from them, but 15 minutes later they ran into the group as they were leaving the casino. The man who disrespected them earlier started insulting Ngomani again, calling her a monkey, a black bitch and the k-word. The k-word he's referring to is "kaffir," which is a racial slur used to refer to a black person.

"Tobby walked up to him in an attempt to reprimand him," Ngomani shared.

Next thing you know, Zehetleitner was punched in the face by one of the men and a brawl broke out. Ngomani said she as she was being attacked security and waitresses looked on without stepping in.

"Two of them attacked me, my hair was flying, I was being pulled in every direction with waitresses and security watching like it was a show."

"Then they all attacked me at once. I can handle three but five or six or seven or however many it was was too much and I was beaten unconscious and when I came round they had all gone."

The casino confirmed the attack and said they have video footage of the incident.

"Video footage shows that the first Time Square Close Protection Officer was on the scene within 20 seconds. Within a minute approximately seven officers had intervened to stop the fight. Paramedics tended to an injured woman at the on-site clinic," said Brett Hoppe, Time Square general manager."

"Time Square is currently reviewing all the CCTV footage for an internal investigation, but we vehemently refute the version of the incident as previously reported [as claimed by the couple]. We are supporting South African Police Service in their continuing investigation," said Hoppe.

Given the injuries she sustained, her modeling career could be in jeopardy.

Now, the couple is looking to pursue a civil case against their attackers.

"We will pursue a civil matter, they have to learn that they can't just beat up people in a racist attack. It makes me sick, It's disgusting," Ngomani said from her hospital bed.

Zehetleitner said he expected an arrest would be "made quickly" since they are well-known rugby players. And he vowed to end their professional careers since they had no regard for his fiancée's.

"I have been asked not to say more until the police are ready to make arrests but these guys are rugby players from a well known rugby team so this is all very sensitive," Zehetleitner said.

"As an interracial couple we have never had any trouble in townships or in Cape Town or Johannesburg, but in Pretoria where we both live we get vile racist abuse all the time," he continued. "So many people see it is as wrong for a black woman and a white man to be together. How in this age can people call a black woman a baboon or a monkey or use the K-word?'

"It is just so wrong to have to put up with this sort of racial abuse," he said.

Horrific. We're so tired of people hurting other people. We sincerely hope they receive justice.

I’m leaning towards believing this since Salem was one of the first things conceived for the show, so her team would follow. Makes you wonder if Miles was always gonna have his “crazy” Tyrian though or if that came later. I doubt it because I don’t believe Monty would make characters as boring as Hazel and Watts right from the start.

Gee, it’s almost as though those characters have been on screen for a total of five minutes a piece and thus not enough time to be developed and thus you are being a nitpicky douche for making judgements so earlier so you can bitch.

Yeah it’s not breaking news to say that they did the opposite of what would be a good idea. Mentioned in the commentary, but in more detail in the special features, is the fact that CRWBY had a rough start to the volume due to the new production pipeline, which continued for several episodes.

You know, the most common compliant with Oscar was he didn’t get enough screentime to develop his struggle with Ozpin and thus moving him up to Episode 4 is an improvement over the original plan of 7. Of course, it’s not breaking news for RWDE to sabatoge the show just to complain more: That’s like a third of their Modius Operande.

And at least RWBY is original: the one creative license to your name isn’t even an attempt at being original with you badly copying and pasting RWBY onto a screen with what little you do change to make it objectively worse.

Wondering how they would have fit 4 whole monsters in that fight, but I guess that’s why they ended up splitting two bad guys between teams instead.

So Weiss fought a Grimm in her trailer it turns out. Idk how to feel about that. In a way it makes sense because, as we’ve seen with Winter’s summons, the Schnee summons are light versions of Grimm. It makes little sense though when you consider that the Geist inhabits inanimate things and therefore the armor isn’t a natural feature of the Grimm.

And the very commentary points out that the Geists are named after what they inhabit (AKA Petra Geist) so it seems like whatever they inhabit because a Grimm by extension.

Iunno what fatal flaw to focus on here. Is it how this makes it sound like Jaune’s god damn weapon model design was THAT important that Kerry noticed? That it implies melting Pyrrha’s armor down was a last-minute thought? That the plot hole of Pyrrha fucking disintegrating and therefore leaving no armor or cape for Jaune was made entirely because Kerry liked how a shield looked?

Hey RE;RWBY? Know what a storyboard is? Obviously not considering you would know that a storyboard is made RIGHT AFTER they basic writing and thus NOT LAST MINUTE.

So instead of losing it for a reason they just lose it for the sake of it. Cool.

Sort of how Pyrrha can’t understand what jaune was going through in volume 1.

Or how Neptuen and Sun got thrown out of the fight in Voume 2.

Or how no one noticed how old Cinder was in Volume 3.

Wow. The people working on this show were seriously so disillusioned that they thought Pyrrha’s relationship with Jaune earned that kind of reaction. Not even gonna mention how the existence of the recording makes no sense, especially since Pyrrha signs off on it. Why would she do that on a generic fighting guide. I can’t believe how attached these people were to the Alpha Hets.

Or, you know.... IT WAS A CHARACTER THEY GOT ATTACHED TO. KIND OF LIKE THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO CRIED WHEN SHE DIED.

And why does their sexuality have anything to do with how their suffering causes pain in people capable of feeling empathy? Are you saying that people should care about people if their heterosexual? Or are you saying that they only cared about Pyrrha because she was heterosexual?

If A then you are a heterophobe and thus any you say about sexuality should be immediately disregarded. if B then that's offensive to at least Lindsay and Arryn who are LGBT and work at RT.

Sports Journalism 101

I like sports.  Phew, that feels good to say.  At 32 years old I can finally admit it to myself, and to you all – I think sports is good, and I like ‘em.  I have been filled with doubt about sport my entire life!  I love watching it, I love supporting my teams, I get damn emotional about it! But I know it’s silly and tribalistic and I don’t want to be a jock, but hell, I’m an adult now, I don’t have anything to prove! One problem I find as an adult sports fan in South Africa, is that a lot of sports writing is garbage!  I mean, it summarizes the results of sporting events, but it is mostly just reporting, there is seldom room for opinion, deep analysis and humor! There are exceptions of course, but by and large it’s a bit dull.  Another major issue is that most of the comment sections of sports sites are trash. Just real stinky trash.  Just a garbage fire of racism, anger, insults, machismo and pointless grandstanding. I have concluded that if I want decent sports writing, I’m going to have to write it MYSELF!

 Let’s start with cricket, because this is my premium bae, my bottom bitch if you will.  If you don’t love cricket I really feel sorry for you, because you are missing something beautiful and pure. Do yourself a favor and watch the documentary ‘Fire in Babylon’, which is basically ‘Cool Runnings’, but for cricket.  It’s got all the good good Caribbean accents, it’s got political and social subtext, it’s got underdogs, and it’s got glorious victory.   Anyway, back to the current day and South Africa are about to start their second test match against New Zealand after the first game was a rain affected draw. That was a cracker of a game until New Zealand ruined it by being an arctic country prone to endless rain and sleet and lord of the rings related disasters.  The teams were pretty well matched after Faf du Plessis zagged on everyone by batting first, when every other captain for the last 10 years has bowled first.  This is why I like Faf - he is bold as hell, unpredictable, and he’s got a jawline stronger than the Cape Town wind!  I think the captain of the team should always be the sexiest team member, it disrupts the other captain at the coin toss, as evidenced by the fact that we have won every toss so far this tour.  Now might be a good time to interject to say that everything about cricket is funny in a 13 year old boy way (the toss, team member etc) and I will be mining this for a lot of comedy, so if you are a mature adult, you might want to opt out here.   NZ have a few injuries, including two of their senior guys – Taylor and Boult – but they showed in the first test that they are a team to be reckoned with.  South Africa will be looking for improved performances from Cook, Amla, and Duminy, who have not been the best as of late.  Amla is my number 1 boy and I am sure he is gonna bounce back hard this game! Duminy is the boy under pressure, after Bavuma got some runs under his belt after a lean run.  This is where I get so mad though, to read the comments you’d think that Duminy and Bavuma were Under 14C players that were promoted to the Proteas by Jacob Zuma because they’re PoC! The comments are so racist and bad that even non-South African commenters on ESPNCricinfo have got in on the action of calling these guys ‘Quotas’ when they don’t perform.  These guys have to perform to such a high degree to earn anyone’s approval, and it is such racist bullshit.  Duminy is great, he has saved our asses numerous times, and even through a lean run he is averaging 40 in his last 10 tests! Bavuma is also an absolute treasure, his run-out against Australia pretty much won us that series, and his fielding alone is enough to justify a place, and his half century in the first test is hopefully a sign of him finding form.  Seriously, go watch that run out 10 times and tell me it doesn’t bring a tear to your eye and a rigidity to your genitals. While you’re at it, watch Wayde van Niekerk’s Olympic 400m race a few times to get that patriotic sports love going.  Goddam it’s a thing of beauty.

My call is that Amla is going to score a century, Vern and Rabada are going to kick it up a notch and destroy NZ and SA is going to win the test with a day to spare to go slay a balrog in the mines of Moria.  I also call that India are going to crush Australia in the 3rd test, and that Bangladesh are going to beat Sri Lanka and I doing so will score 420 runs so I can bring out my Bongladesh jokes again.
