thank you so much for your kind words about my fic ;_;. that's one of the fics i'm proudest of and i'm happy it's still getting hits two years later. i'm also baffled by the lack of gen fic for both post lottl and eot. from what i've seen while searching, the most popular way to do post-ytnw as to include it as a hurt/comfort element in a jack/ianto fic. and no shade on that but it's really only one way to get at the emotional scar the ytnw left on everyone who remembers it. idk if it's the fandom's neutral at best relationship to martha or a general disinterest in writing gen fic but it blows my mind. what baffles me MORE is the lack of EU content about everything surrounding the ytnw (Saxon campaign, actual year, and post). there are so many gaps here to capitalize on. it's this massive playground and it's basically unexplored in the EU. the year of martha jones audio BF put out is pretty good but it's basically the only full-length work in this category afaik. other than that it's a few short stories. super weird to me.

meant to reply to this sooner, sorry! you’re very welcome, it’s a brilliant story that digs into the emotional consequences for Martha, Jack, and Lucy and explores the like. practical real world cleanup of the ytnw and end of time.

I’ve gotten used to seeing lots of well-written gen fic for the thirteenth doctor era, and the ytnw is a massively traumatic event where the ramifications aren’t really explored in canon, so I totally expected there to be a lot of gen fics for this timeframe too, and…..really there isn’t much, at least not on ao3. so I extra appreciate that you wrote and shared this, it’s The post-ytnw fic for me right now.

and good point about the EU! I haven’t listened to the Martha audios because I’ve been limiting my BF purchasing mostly to Gallifrey in recent years. but also Martha was my first favorite companion, and I loved her in LotT and imprinted on that episode as a baby fan, and there’s that hesitance of “are they gonna do a good job with a character I love?” but glad to hear you thought it was pretty good, and it’s definitely something I’m interested in listening to at some point! but yeah it really is one of those empty spaces where so much could be done—it’s the apocalypse, essentially, and even though they don’t end up remembering, all the old companions (and future companions!) on Earth lived through it, too, and that creates even more story possibilities.

Riley/Martha & Ten/Martha fic AU post-42

The Doctor doesn’t stop her as Riley’s face lights up and he follows her onto the TARDIS. It’s an apology and yet not one at all from the Doctor. It’s an apology in that he doesn’t say a word to her. It’s an acceptance that she’s important to him that he's willing to pull the lever, sending them and an amazed Riley into space and time.

To Martha’s endless fascination (and honestly a welcome shot to her self-confidence), she realizes that the silence is not just an apology; the Doctor is jealous of the fact that she has Riley.

(The thing is that Martha isn't even sure if the Doctor realizes it. Realizes that he cares about her, that he still wants her time to be his, to be liked, looked upon, appreciated. That he wants her attention.

But the kicker, Martha realizes, is not that the Doctor’s jealous of Riley asking Martha questions. He doesn't care if Riley doesn't ask him questions. He scowls when Martha answers them. He cares when Martha touches Riley. He cares when Martha isn't focused on him.)

It’s too bad that Martha doesn’t have a chance to feel out this new dynamic, this shift of power among those in the TARDIS, before the Family of Blood comes along.

(Aka: I read @stewy's post about Riley joining Ten and Martha post-42 and I realized that Human Nature/Family of Blood is the literal next episode and this spiralled.)

#this is incredibly reductive it's both it's in fact likely more than both#health outcomes and life expectancy are very complex issues with a big variety of factors#yes it's the healthcare but also yes it's the diet!! at least parts of it#the diet listed above is VARIED with a very good blend of nutrients protein fiber fats and carbs#in the mediterranean you also have a lot more accessible access to fresh food!!#especially fresh produce!!!!#the usa is full of food deserts often in the poorest parts of this country#you know what the big unifier between both healthcare access and quality food access is??? POVERTY#if you don't have access to good quality food ESPECIALLY good quality produce you're going to live a shorter life#not because red meat or saturated fats are deadly but because if that's the ONLY thing you can get access to with reasonable freshness#you're eating an unvaried diet and missing a lot of key nutrients to keep your body healthy#and if you're too poor to eat well and too poor to go to the doctor you're going to die younger (via @bisexualamy)

Reasons why I love it: Wow, the Ice Bucket Challenge, that really takes me back. I really love the Avengers spin that Kathar put on it – adrenaline junkies, the lot of them – and I especially enjoyed the meta commentary about what's happening on social media while the video airs. This fic is fantastic, and I really hope you give it a shot for yourself!

Pairing: Steve & Sam Rating: T Words: 3,377 Tags: PTSD, Panic Attacks, Serious Talks

Summary: It’s been three weeks since the helicarriers, and Sam’s not doing too great.

Reasons why I love it: This fic feels like nails on a chalkboard in the best possible way. It's tense and uncomfortable and everything that I love in a fic that portrays mental health struggles. Poor Sam is going through a lot, and Steve is struggling so much with how to help him that it hurts my heart. And the ending gave me hope as much as it made my heart sink. This fic is fantastic, and you should definitely read it!

Reasons why I love it: As someone who went to film school, this fic feels like it was written specifically for me. The thought of Steve being a movie buff who's interested in making his own someday makes me want to do a happy dance. Anyway, I love this fic, and you should definitely read it, if you haven't yet!

Pairing: Steve & Sam Rating: T Words: 4,425 Tags: Mental Health Professional, Recovery, Worried Sam

Summary: Sam doesn't care if the rumours are true and Genius Stark does have a computer program or even an AI to screen his calls, eventually that's going to get tired of Sam calling, even if it has to develop sapience first to do it. Although Sam's phone might beat him to it: he feels like Siri's getting annoyed at him already. Doesn't matter. He can do this all day.

Reasons why I love it: Sam truly is the best friend anyone could have. His worry for Steve is really touching – and understandable, because Jesus Christ, Steve. I also really love the conversations Sam has with Pepper and Laura respectively, they're both such queens. Definitely check this one out, it's amazing!

Summary: “Sam, these kids are trusting their parents to protect them,” Steve said, “and these parents are listening to this ‘Jenny McCarthy,’ and people like her, who are telling them that the best way to protect their kids is to stop them from getting one of the best things modern medicine has ever invented. I can’t just sit here drinking coffee and pretend I didn’t read about this.” Sam, knowing what was about to happen and realizing he was going to get dragged into it too, sighed and stood up a little straighter. “So,” he said. “I guess the question I should be asking is: what are we going to do about it?” (Or, the one where Aggressively Activist Steve Rogers finds out about anti-vaxxers and can't keep his mouth shut on the issue once he does.)

Reasons why I love it: Steve's outrage was basically my reaction the first time I heard of anti-vaxx as a concept, so this fic felt very cathartic for me. Not to get too political here, but this is something that I feel strongly about, so I'm very happy to see it represented in fic form. I hope you check this one out, because it deserves all the love it can get!

Martha Jones As the Doctor (Last of the Time Lords AU fic)

For all my Martha Jones fans out there: here is the link to my Martha Jones fix-it fic for the end of Last of the Time Lords!

When humanity is told to think of the Doctor during the most precious seconds in history, the very last moments of a countdown to the end of universe itself, their minds do not go to the man in the Master’s transmissions.

Martha Jones has not yet passed her doctoral exams. She has not yet been certified to practice.

But if you were to ask any of the remaining humans on the earth who the Doctor was, they would not think of a man in a pinstripe suit and a long coat and canvas shoes.

They would think of a dark-skinned woman with determination in her eyes and fear weighing on her shoulders, kindness in her smile and danger in her voice. A human woman with grime on her face and a rasp in her voice and callouses on her palms and a living, breathing pulse that they can touch and feel, the warmth under her hands, the flesh that carries blood and pain and proof.

And so when Martha calls upon a miracle on the Valiant, it is not a Time Lord that receives the psychic input of five billion prayers. When the world thinks of the Doctor, Martha’s body alights with a swirl of light, lifting her from her feet.
