In all my chaptered fics I’ve referenced the start of S8 so many times that I really want to do a deeper dive into it.
I realized, my recent long fics all go backwards in canon. S19(acaia) ->11.23(KSFM)->11.13(FDNH&xmas) -> S9(LexieLives)
(Christmas Fic will begin posting right after FDNH finishes on December 16th. Lexie Lives is being written.)

shut up shut up shut up i didn’t mean to
When reading fanfic keep in mind that for professional literature:
Short story: under 7,500
Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500
Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000
Novel: over 40,000
Fics over 40k are literally a novel written and shared for free.  If you have written a 40k+ fic, you have literally written a novel.

@blitzlowin /cracks knuckles/ i do this for u. there is no order to this list, but here we go -
Tumblr media
the jasmine throne - 2021, epic fantasy. fantastic. lesbeans. just gorgeous worldbuilding, and the main characters Priya and Malini are likeable and smart while they’re maneuvering around each other and the other moving pieces in a colonized country under the thumb of an empire that’s rapidly taking a turn towards war. the cover for book 2, the oleander sword, just dropped, and I’m dying.
Tumblr media
-
Tumblr media
the luminous dead - 2019, scifi/horror. lesbeans, with even more emphasis on the morally grey aspects this time. absolutely fucking terrifying - the threats in this alien caves are very real, stacked with the psychological tension of having someone above control the caving suit that keeps you alive while underground for weeks at a time and the economic pressures of being trapped on a dead-end planet, leaving you no choice but to keep delving deeper...and deeper...
again, the worldbuilding is insane. I reread it periodically and can never get over how well-paced the beats are. this is the kind of merch you get:
Tumblr media
-
Tumblr media
iron widow - 2021, scifi/fantasy. the bisexual poly love triangle we’ve all been screaming about. I describe it as an inverse Pacific Rim, but you won’t get why until pretty much the final pages. all three of these have had morally dubious protagonists but in iron widow Zetian GOES OFF AND WE LOVE HER FOR IT. she’s chaotic furious. she’s unhinged in the best way. “May he stay unsettled.” the author themselves has described this as accidentally furry Dragonball Z with giant Pacific Rim robots and monsters, essentially. I have absolutely no idea what will happen with book 2 but I know it’ll be balls-to-the-walls insane (complimentary).
-
Tumblr media
the outside - 2019, cosmic horror scifi. lesbeans. humanity is ruled by AI gods throughout the stars, the angels are cybernetic post-human cogs in a repressive machine, and Yasira accidentally makes a scientific leap that invites in a disruptive, heretical, reality warping presence that destroys a space station. things spiral out of control from there. the second book didn’t hit as well for me (mostly because mysteriously it was half the length it needed to be? it goes from a novel to a sequel novella almost, so not sure what happened there) but the outside is 9/10.
-
Tumblr media
the world gives way - 2021. scifi. you will cry. like that’s it, it’s a short little novel written entirely to gut you. that is all.
-
Tumblr media
murderbot - scifi. I feel like everyone by this point has heard about/read murderbot by this point, but the fact is I can’t in good conscious leave it off a rec list. there are six books, now, a mix of novellas and one full length novel about Murderbot, and Martha Wells (bless her for this and for the Books of the Raksura, her series full of bi poly shapeshifters) apparently has a contract to write at least three more murderbot books so we’re set for life basically. Ms Wells has never let me down ever, in her life -

the darkangel trilogy - 1982-1990. scifi/fantasy, though you may not realize the scifi at work at first.
okay. okay listen. listen. hear me out. you read the first book description. it sounds like a traditional dracula hetero set up. Aerial and her mistress are kidnapped by the darkangel. it has an almost fairy-tale kind of logic to the magic system. it ends with Aerial literally exchanging her heart with the darkangel’s to save his life, causing him to fall in love with her.
meredith ann pierce then spends the next two books deconstructing the consequences of that choice, as Aerial finds herself more and more estranged from the rest of the humanity-adjacent people of her world - including the darkangel himself - and becoming a sorceress whether she wants to be or not, inextricably linked to the sci-fantasy workings that keep their world turning under the light of a [spoilers] COMPLETELY IRRADIATED EARTH. ultimately she has to make a choice to give the darkangel his own choice back, and take up a responsibility that will leave her cut off from her humanity entirely but for one person who stays with her to the very end. meredith ann pierce’s meld of scifi and fantasy is what I aspire to - the worldbuilding is so subtle at first that you don’t even realize what’s happening until it happens.
(do I like to imagine it ends on a slightly lesbean note because of that last part? maybe so...)

tgcf/heaven official’s blessing - 2017, now being published officially in English starting with book 1 in December this year. putting the g in LGBT. before, I could have linked to the free online English translation, but everything has been taken down since it was licensed officially for publication. Xie Lian ascended to godhood 800 years ago, and through a series of catastrophes and extremely traumatic events was banished, ascended again, got banished again in even more disgrace, and spent the rest of that time wandering the world, luckless and alone, until he finally...ascended again. but the evil and mysteries that plagued him 800 years ago haven’t gone away, either. (MXTX also did MDZS/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, the basis of the Untamed show.)

I wrote this a week ago and forgot to post it… It’s a followup to my Do Not Try to Date the Candle House post.
i did not go back to sleep that night.
My thoughts on the timeline:
The time M/D got together is finite but makes the most sense if 4/5 was two years. We have to errr. never mention the year (Anyone else remember that Mer’s constant injuries/surgeries would’ve put her behind at some point? At least by S8?) it is a much healthier relationship that way too.
It can range thusly:
with canon years:
s1-3 covering anywhere from 2005-2006 to 2007-2008 (start of the show/end of s3 & actual date mentioned in s3)
s4/s5 (starting 2006-2009)
what ends up not making sense, though, is the intern exam being in 2007, and George dying in 2009, as episode dates allow.
For that you have to have:
S1-3: 2006-2007
s4: 2007-2008 ending)
s5 2008- 2009
which again, lotsa sense with the relationship, no sense with it all being Lexie’s intern year. I tend to just ignore George’s death year and move on.
Canonically: S6 (3rd 2008-2010start) s7(4th 2009-2011start, Zola born)
If you’re willing to wreck merry havoc with holidays and to ignore how many years they’ve been working, it would be technically feasible to stretch s6 or s7 into two years (liver donation!) (You could even do both, but it gets crazy) then s8  (5th, 2009-2014 with 4 yrs from 6&7) Lexie dies, giving b/w 4&8 years of sisterhood. But doing both extensions with a 2007 start is actually ridiculous and i’m not including it from here out but we could be in 2023 without looking closely at s12-16.
Canonically
s8(5th 2010-2012 at start) s9 (attending 1 2011-2013) s10(attending 2 2012-2014)
Derek Dies (2013-2015)
San Diego return: 2014-2016
Then we need s17, 2020-2021 I imagine the end of s11- early 12 stretch, especially with Mer’s attack. You need to get b/w 7 and 4 years from s12 (starting 2014-2016) s13 s14 s15 & s16 (ending 2019/2020) I haven’t spent a lot of time with them, but Levi was an intern for at least two seasons and DeLuca was chief resident after not-long, so I bet it’s fun.
It just depends where you want extra time. I like more Mer/Der which could be as far back as a ‘05-‘06 intern year—‘06-‘07 is my sweet spot—I can pretend Derek didn’t propose within three months of the candle house, or, at the least, Mer and that kid were trick-or-treating for ears in, like, July.
that also means fewer Meredith’s Lost Years, though, because I do not fuck with the Ellis timeline so Mer is born in ‘78, Maggie ‘83, Lexie ‘84, Molly ‘85. So Mer starts at 27-29 Going back leads into the How Was Meredith in First Grade in November 1983 situation…
It’s gotta give somewhere. Is what i’m saying. I may need to age Ellie up a little in As Cool As I Am And possibly Z/Sofia down.
Also in this 2011 fic I had Mer finishing her residency when Zola was four and I do not know what math I was doing, but it’s helping me keep my WiP San Diego fic Zo in character

For the eight years I have been on these antidepressants, tearing up at anything non-devastating means I forgot to take them.
Eight years ago is also approximately when I stopped writing Grey’s Anatomy fic, so imagine my surprise when every. time. something. happens. i. tear. up. AT MY OWN WRITING. do you know how much it takes for me to do that with original?
and it’s not just the san diego fic. it’s the Meredith and Derek Fucking Talk one-shot.
when i really start Lexie fic i will not be able to work on it in public
it’s like they traumatized me or something.
OH WAIT.

Chapter Three of As Cool As I Am aka the Bisexual Meredith Grey epic is up!

This is going to start going up in a couple of days. I’m still revising, but I’m so stoked about it I had to share something from the “Bisexual Meredith Grey Epic” aka “As Cool As I Am.” aka “Grey’s Anatomy Does Pride.”
Ch1 Excerpt:
“So, Sofia will be with us this weekend.” Meredith tapped it slowly with her Sharpie. “Which is during Seattle Pridefest. Unless—“
“There’s an emergency,” the kids chorused, and she put the calendar down to tickle them, even Zola, whose little-girl moments were getting fewer and fewer. She was so, so glad that was a family joke, not a constant, niggling fear.
“Yes, smarties, unless there’s an emergency, we’re going to go.”
“For sure?” Zola asked. “It’ll be on the Google Calendar?”
“It already is,” Meredith reassured her. That was the rule: anything that got put on the family G-Cal got worked around, unless there was a true emergency. It worked out even with trips to Minnesota.
“Because of Sofia will be here?” Bailey asked.
“Sort of.” It was not the time to hedge; not with his nod turning into a yawn, and Zola leaning against her, spent from such a revelatory day. One more. One more revelation. “You know how Aunt Callie likes men sometimes, too?”
“And non-binary people too, Sofia said.”
“Right. Well. for a long time… No, that’s…. Aunt Callie didn’t start dating women until she was a grown-up. Sometimes feelings change. Who you like changes. I don’t know if she ever had feelings before that, and we never talked about it…. Even just before you guys were born, the world was different. If you dated the same gender, or even if you didn’t, that didn’t mean you talked about it. There were a lot more people who thought being anything other than a women who dared men or a man who dated women was unnatural. Which we know is ridiculous, right?”
They all nodded.
“Sometimes feelings change, but sometimes… especially before people who weren’t straight could get married, if you weren’t, you couldn’t tell everyone. Sometimes because there were even more people who would hurt you for it. Sometimes because even people who weren’t out and out mean would still hold it against you.” She took a breath. Two. “Zo,  BLM matters to all of us, right?”
“Duh, Mom.”
“But Aunt Maggie takes you to protests most often because she wants to share something important to her with you.”
And there was Zola’s understanding expression, so clear and so much more quickly than she expected. “Mom…Do you… You like girls?”
“Yes. I do. I’ve--”
“Mommy, are you going to have a girlfriend?”
Meredith looked down at Ellie; the eyes they shared and had gotten from Meredith’s mother shining in a way Meredith had rarely if ever seen from her namesake.
“Not that I know of. Would it be okay with you if I did?”
Ellis nodded solemnly. “Girls are pretty, and smart, and can do whatever boys can do.”

Okay, one more, just to prove I still put Mer/Der in this.
Bisexual Meredith Grey Epic excerpt 5
“There’s not much to…. I know I accused you of not thinking about it enough less than five minutes ago, but really, there’s not that much to get. If it’d been your sister who sat down next to me at Joe’s that night—“
“Bite your tongue.”
She’d expected him to object to the suggestion, of course, but the sheer levels of disbelief, denial, and derision in his voice triggered a burst of laughter that she rolled over to muffle with her pillow.
“Jeez, Mer, talk about things that aren’t funny.”
“I was serious,” she gasped.
“No. Which of my—? No. They’re nothing like me!”
“Oh, and you were so my type.”
“Well—but—“
“Look, I didn’t actually mean one of your sisters specifically, but consider: dark-haired, blue-eyed, neurosurgeon with a massive ego, and—“
“Amelia?! Meredith, you cannot think that you and Amelia?”
“She’s straight, I get that, but you can’t tell me she’s never kissed a girl, and liked it.”

Title: Punching Down(AO3) (FFN) (Grey’s Anatomy, T)
Summary: In 1987 Meredith Grey has no idea why her mother isn’t more angry that she got into a fight at school. The discussion that follows gives her three rules to live by 1. Do not incite violence—Don’t start it. 2. Never let someone touch you without permission—Finish it. 3. Don’t punch down—The bullies are fair game.
In the same universe as As Cool As I Am, but can be read as a stand alone. Canon compliant.
