Life for Reese Wilkerson was absolute hell. He sucked at school, to the point where all his teachers had lost hope of him ever graduating. He had no job because no one wanted to hire a delinquent with his track record. And his house wasn’t even a safe haven because he was being babysat by some girl in the grade below him.

She was constantly manipulating Lois into getting the family to do whatever it was she wanted to do. And then, when Reese or Malcolm tried to say something, Jessica would start whining and manipulating them. Sometimes, it took a while for them to figure it out.

“It’s called ‘If You’re Gay, It’s Okay.’ It’s full of great resources.” Malcolm smiled at his brother as he looked over the pamphlet he had given him. Reese tossed it on the table and gave Malcolm his gift. He looked at the VHS tape. “What’s this?”

“Naught Pool Boys 3. I watched 10 or 12 of these, and this one seems to have the most stuff that you guys like.” Malcolm’s looked confused, shaking his head.

“I’m not gay.”

“Malcolm, watch that movie, see what they’re doing, and then tell me you’re not gay.”

“No, Reese, I’m not gay. You’re gay.”

“No, I’m not. You are.”

“But she said…” Malcolm trailed off, and he and Reese looked at each other with realization before turning to where Malcolm’s finger had pointed. There sat Jessica on the couch, and she busted out laughing.

“You hope!” She yelled between snorts and laughs. “And you pray! But you never think it would be this good!”

Reese’s nostrils flared, and Malcolm’s fists balled up. They had been tricked yet again for Jessica’s own amusement. They were livid. They didn’t even notice her leave the house, only getting knocked out of their trance of rage by the silence that suddenly filled the room.

“Vendetta.” Reese muttered.

“Reese-”

“Vendetta!” He shouted, whipping around to look at Malcolm. Malcolm held his hands up in surrender.

“Yes, Reese, vendetta. I promise we’ll get back at her. But we have to be careful; she has Mom on her side.” Reese sighed, looking dejected.

“Oh yeah.”

“We have to figure out how to completely turn Mom against her.”

“I have an idea.” That was something Malcolm rarely heard from Reese. “It’s risky. But I’ll tell you one thing. No one calls me gay and gets away with it.” Malcolm then yelped as Reese reached over to him. He started to suck on his neck, and the force of yanking Malcolm was so strong that they fell to the ground.

Later that night, Malcolm and Reese were in their room getting ready for dinner. As Malcolm pulled on a turtleneck, he looked at Reese, who was fixing his hair.

“So, who’s that guy you invited over?” Reese froze for a second before going back to straightening out his clothes.

“He’s a friend,” Reese replied nonchalantly.

“Friend? You?”

“Yeah, Malcolm. Is it so unbelievable that I have a friend?”

“Uh… No, of course not.” 

Lois was over the moon when Reese asked if he could have a friend over for dinner. A little too over the moon for Reese’s liking, but he was just glad she let him invite his friend. They had been hanging out for a while, and Reese wanted him to meet his family.

“Why are you wearing a turtleneck? I’m the one with the hickey.” Malcolm pointed out as he looked over his older brother.

“Don’t worry about it. Come on. It’s showtime.” Reese left the bedroom without waiting for a response, and Malcolm was forced to follow him. “Damn it,” Reese muttered as he stopped in the kitchen. His mom had gotten to Y/n, Reese’s friend. He could only imagine what kind of stupid questions she was asking him. But luckily, Lois turned around at the sound of her sons’ footsteps.

“Oh, good. Reese, I was talking to your friend here. He’s very polite. I’m hoping his habits rub off on you.” Y/n smiled at the compliment. Despite the slight dig made at him, Reese smiled at his mom’s compliment too. But then Lois narrowed her eyes at her sons.

“Why are you two wearing turtlenecks? You never wear turtlenecks.” Reese and Malcolm looked nervous.

“We’re, uh, we’re just trying out a new look.”

“New look, huh?” Lois asked in that tone that the boys knew all too well. The one that said she didn’t believe their story for a second. Before they knew it, Lois yanked down the necks of their sweaters. She looked like she was about to explode. “What are these?”

“Mom, don’t overreact,” Malcolm said nervously. He and Reese glanced behind her, and she turned to look at Jessica and Y/n.

“No, Mom, it’s not what you think,” Reese said. Lois let go of them and took a deep breath.

“I think we need to have a little chat. Come on, Jessica.” She stalked off to her bedroom, Jessica nervous and hot on her heels. When they were out of earshot, Reese and Malcolm high-fived, celebrating the success of Reese’s plan.

“Reese, what the hell is wrong with you? I thought she was gonna murder me.” Y/n whacked Reese upside the head. 

“Why? What did he do?” Malcolm asked, confused and slightly thrown off that his first interaction with Reese’s new friend was him yelling at his brother.

“He looked at me when his mom asked who gave him the hickey.”

“She asked me a question, and I answered it.” Reese rolled his eyes. “I thought you wanted me to be more honest, Babe.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t really want your mom’s first impression of me to be finding out that I sucked the hell out of your neck.”

“What?” Malcolm interrupted the boys. “‘Babe?’ Sucking necks? I thought you guys were just friends.”

“We are,” Reese responded quickly. “We were just kidding. This is what it’s like to have a friend, Malcolm.”

“Then who gave you that hickey?” Malcolm crossed his arms, staring his brother down. Y/n moved to stand next to him. 

“Yeah, Reese. Where’d you get it?”

“You know where I got it, dummy,” Reese said to Y/n, rolling his eyes.

“Remind me.”

“You, duh….. Damn it.” Reese groaned.

“Oh, my God. Jessica was right; you are gay!”

“Shut up, Malcolm!” Y/n hissed. “You’re the only one who knows. I thought tonight was the night we would tell Reese’s family, not get the babysitter killed.”

“And I’m not gay, Malcolm,” Reese interjected. “I’m just dating a dude.”

“Right…” Malcolm was going to try to make Reese think about what he had just said, but decided to just let it go. “So… Does he make you happy?”

“Don’t make it weird.” Reese walked over to set the table. Y/n scratched the back of his neck.

“This is not how I wanted this to go.” He sighed.

“I’m sorry.” Malcolm apologized meekly.

“It’s fine. Reese told me all about Jessica. If she wasn’t a girl, I would’ve punched her lights out.”

The boys waited a long while for the family to have dinner. Soon, Lois and Jessica exited the bedroom, and Jessica tearfully left. The boys felt terrible, but Y/n quietly reminded them of why they did what they did while Lois bustled around the kitchen. Soon after Jessica’s departure, Dewey came from wherever he was, and Hal got home from work. So now, the family and Y/n were digging into dinner.

“So, Y/n. How did you and Reese meet?” Lois asked as she cut up her meat.

“Oh, uh, I was his tutor for English. He did a lot better than I thought he would.”

“Really?” Hal asked, genuinely surprised. “All you did was help him?”

“Yup.”

“You didn’t take tests or do homework for him in any way?”

“Not that I’m aware of.” Y/n laughed nervously. Yes, he knew of his boyfriend’s track record, but surprisingly, he actually tried when Y/n started tutoring him.

“Interesting. So that D plus was all Reese?”

“Yup.”

“Good for you, son!” Hal celebrated, patting Reese on the back.

“And he’s not…” Lois trailed off, trying to word her question in a way that wouldn’t offend her son or his guest. “Forcing you to hang out with him outside of tutoring?”

“Mom!” Reese groaned, throwing his head back in disbelief that she would say such a thing. Yeah, he didn’t really have friends. But he wasn’t that desperate.

“Nope. I mean, I still help him with his homework and stuff, but now we hang out just for fun mainly.”

“We actually hang out a lot,” Reese said, suddenly straightening up in his seat. Y/n gave him a look, saying, ‘Are you really going to tell your family that we’re dating after your mom just kicked your babysitter out for supposedly giving you a hickey?’

Reese gave him a look back that said ‘yes.’

“Oh, really? That’s nice.” Lois said, genuinely happy that her son had found someone to spend time with.

“We actually started hanging out so much that we wanted to step up our relationship.” Y/n held his breath as he watched Reese’s family pause their eating to look at the two. “Y/n is… he’s my boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” Lois asked in a tone that came out harsher than intended. She cleared her throat. “I’m sorry. What do you mean ‘boyfriend?’”

“We’re dating,” Reese said. Lois looked like she was going to say something and then didn’t, tried again, and then didn’t. Everyone watched her try to formulate a response. Finally, she planted her hands on the table and stood from her seat.

“I’m sorry, this is… I can’t do this right now.” Then she left, stalking off to her bedroom for the second time that night. Hal stood up, ready to follow after his wife, but turned to Y/n, who was sitting next to his son.

“It was nice to meet you, Y/n. Reese, it’s getting late. Maybe you should take your… boyfriend home.” Hal gave the boys a sad smile, like he was happy for them but not for how their night was going. “Goodnight, boys.” They also bid him goodnight, and he left to talk to his wife.

Now left were Y/n, his boyfriend Reese, and his three younger brothers.

“So…” Dewey started, hands folded in front of him on the table. “How long have you been gay, Reese?”

“I’m not gay, Dewey!” Reese yelled. “I still think girls are hot. Y/n is just hotter.”

“As nice as that is, I think I should go, Reese.” The boy stood up and started grabbing his things. Reese sighed, following after him.

“I’ll drive you home.”

“You don’t have to.” Reese grabbed his dad’s keys and Y/n’s backpack. He walked out to the car, waiting to respond until he and Y/n were both in the car.

“Dad told me to. And with the way my mom just acted, I’m really gonna need him on my side.”

The drive was short and quiet. Neither wanted to talk about the dinner that had gone awry, but there didn’t seem to be anything else they could discuss. When Reese parked outside Y/n’s house, they sat in the car for a while.

“Do you think your mom will ever be okay with us?” Y/n asked, fiddling with his backpack strap. Reese sighed, holding his hand and giving it a tight squeeze.

“I don’t know a lot of things, Y/n.”

“That’s an understatement.” He joked. Reese continued.

“But I do know that at the end of the day, I don’t care about what my mom thinks.”

Y/n smiled. He knew that Reese wasn’t good at verbalizing emotions that weren’t rage. So even though he didn’t say much, his words meant a lot. Y/n kissed Reese, squeezed his hand, and then got out of the car. Reese watched Y/n until he got into the house, and when he did, he laid his forehead on the steering wheel with a sigh.

“It’ll be fine.” He muttered before driving back home.

malcolm was the first one to figure out that reese probably wasn't straight the second reese admitted "yeah, i don't really pay attention to the girls so much yknow? i focus on the guys so i can copy their techniques" during a dirty movie, as well as him asking "wait, girls don't have tails?"

malcolms first (admitted) celebrity male crush was gerard way

dewey figured out the term asexual online (figured out aromantic way later) at around 17 and that's what he started identifying as since

his parents at first were like "well. uh... crushes develop over time! you'll find love soon!" and he was like "im... im almost 18." of course they eventually grew out of this and started respecting it

when his brothers heard about it they were mostly like "you've... never thought a girl or a guy was hot? you never even wanted to kiss one? are you SURE? well alright i suppose they're distracting anyways"

francis had at least one (1) gay experience at the academy that place was festering with homoerotic tension he never talks about it though

reese came out as gay around his very early 20s, by that point nobody was really surprised

malcolm started questioning when he was around 16, but pushed those thoughts aside until he got to college due to fear of being bullied

he and his roommate became boyfriends and that's when he started identifying as bisexual (around the age of 19)
