BTS: for Vecna Vision 3D?

Oh Maan... So many scenes are my favorite but the Joyride chapter going into Steve's Vecnavision is so actually my fave.

This whole sequence was in Steve's perspective and he's not exactly the most observant of guys so there's several layers of dramatic irony in him agonizing over Billy and coming to a realization about his sexuality at the worst possible time, aka in the middle of the upside down trying to get out. Meanwhile Billy's clearly having his heart broken by how well Nancy and Steve work as a team, and do things without thinking for each other. Poor Billy thinks its a failure of communication that he has to voice his needs (it's actually good communication.)

This sequence's got everything I want: Steve realizing he's bisexual, sexy wound tending, Billy ripping out a demodog's heart or something, car chases, Robin with a makeshift flamethrower, tender homoeroticism, and Vecna being THE drama.

Eddie and Billy flirt so much in this scene my beta converted to a full on metalsandwich reader mid-fic. Not a joke, she ONLY ships them as a triad because Eddie's SUCH a flirt. He really is just like that.

I wrote it on a plane to Austin, TX and didn't have wifi access but I mostly accurately got the town layout.

The cyclone of demobats is my favorite part, it took me a while to figure out where I wanted the sequence to go, but I love the idea of swarms and swarms of them attacking, like in The Birds. Side note, is the Creel house meant to look like this or like Bates motel?

They do show that electricity kind of does exist in the upside down, and that objects there are from a particular time, so Billy figures out pretty quickly that hotwiring a car might be a possibility. One thing I wanted to play with is that from the moment Billy figures out that the lake gate is a no go, he is not stopping until he gets them home, he can't even stand still for one moment. While Nancy is gathering clues, he's scavenging as quickly as possible. That's part of what makes him a good team member- he takes risks and works fast, because he's used to obstacles making things harder.

And can we talk about Billy's healing factor? I'm dying to talk about his healing factor. This is the first time we actually get to see him really use it, he grabs things with his bare hands that would make the rest of them shrink back in fear, like crushing demobat skulls with his bare hands. I particularly love the part where Robin asks about upside down rabies, and Billy says he's pre-infected. I wanted him to have that sort of careless dark humor about his powers, like a certain someone who shares a lot with Billy.

And finally, Steve's VecnaVision. While I appreciate Nancy's in canon, it doesn't reveal a whole lot, actually it seems to step her back in character development all the way to season 1. I understand Barb dying is her thing but it seemed a little less evolved. So I had to imagine what Steve's biggest fear would be. First, Vecna plays heavily on his intelligence, which is an obvious pain point, but then goes further. Steve is a really protective person, which of course Vecna sees as a weakness. I really wanted to show that Vecna is most powerful here, and that he can cause physical sensation, completely warping a person's sense. Why show someone a vision limited by the powers of boring physics when you can do anything. Steve's Vision includes a lot of earthly references, he's thrown through the ground, digging into dirt. He's very solid and defined, ans his sense of self is the same way.

Later when Billy goes into his vision, everything is liquidy, scenes dripping and swirling and drifting, because I wanted to show that Vecna tailors his vision not only to the person but the way the person views the world. Billy's in a moment of transition, and he feels sort of insolid and unsure about so many things. He loves the ocean, but there's a fear there too, because the ocean can also be loss.

Maybe when I write the sequel we'll get to see what Vecna would do for everyone else.

Yazmin is adopted and one of three siblings. Yazmin wasn't looking to date when she met Nash. Maybe that was the start of the end knowing she didn't have time to focus on anything else but her career. Yesterday I finally had some free time (I'm done with my finals yay) and watched heartstopper. And maan, I'm sorry I didn't watch it sooner, it was sooo goood, I loved all the characters so much I literally can't choose a favorite (I really like Tori tho and Tao as well). And I was afraid I would have to forward a lot of scenes (cause I can't handle second-hand embarrassment) but that wasn't the case at all!! It was soo lovely, and cute, and it was so *insert feeling I can't describe* to watch Nick on his journey to find out new things about himself. I legit startes crying when he came out to his mom (tho it was more cause I know I could never do the same) and it was nice to see a character who is explicitly bisexual (just like me!!). All in all I really liked it, everything was perfect, only sad it only has 8 episodes (I need a Tori or a Tao spinoff like rn)

I just skimmed through the Netflix adaptation of Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy" and HOLY SHIT the sexual tension between Ishaan Khattar's Maan and Shubham Saraf's Firoz is so goddamn thick you could cut it with a knife. Apparently, in the book, it is implied that they used to be physically intimate as teenagers but have since stopped fooling around and stayed best friends. But if there's anything about the best friends to lovers to best friends/fwb relationship arc, you just KNOW there are lingering feeling always around the corner.

And god do both Ishaan and Shubham deliver on that aspect. It is never outright stated but you just know that these both are/used to be more than just friends. There's a palpable intimacy there that's just too easy-going yet too weighted to be just dudes being Bros. Even in a country like India, where physical affection between men is more socially acceptable than in the western world, the characters are written to be threading that very thin, very delicate line between homosocial and homosexual. It's so beautiful to witness their relationship grow and stumble and bloom yet again into something even more unexplainable as the series progresses.

Also you cannot convince me that Maan and Firoz aren't the prime example of the Disaster Bisexual x Distinguished Bisexual trope. Lmao.

You know what, i didn't watch the movie before. But if anything could convince me to, this is it.

The queer narrative in A suitable boy

The whole narrative of the suitable boy consists of two parallel love stories leading to a marriage, between Lata and Haresh (or between Lata and the idea of marriage in general), and Maan and Firoz. But both the love story and the marriage is subverted in a sense.

The love between Lata and Haresh is unconventional, because it an arranged marriage, arranged by society and people other than the couple involved, where love is not usually an expectation. Maan and Firoz's relationship is love in the  conventional sense, but it will never be accepted by society. In a way their situations are reversed. 

It is about halfway into the book that we realize that Haresh is a prospective suitor. Similarly, unless its a very careful reader who can catch on from the slight hints, we don't realize that Maan and Firoz are lovers, or had been lovers, (it is made clear that Firoz is still in love with Maan) till about 800 pages in. In a way that too goes against reader's expectations. There are hints about both Firoz and Maan's sexuality and their relationship from the first time he is introduced, but they are disguised, and the average reader, expecting a straight story about marriage from the title and everything else, does not notice it.

Both the love stories have a "deviation" from the people they are supposed to end up with. Lata gets involved with Kabir, Maan with Saeeda Bai. The whole situation leads to a love triangle of sorts which explodes in what is essentially, for both cases, a lovers' quarrel.

Kabir is a presence in Haresh and Lata's conversation even if he's not really there. Lata is preoccupied with her thoughts about Kabir, and it makes her see Haresh in an unfavorable light and be sharp with him. Haresh loses his temper and leaves. The implosion is of a small magnitude and is very easily  resolved with civil apologies in letters. The other explosion between Maan and Firoz is colossal and destroys their families and everyone around them. Their apology, by contrast is emotional but wordless. The intensity of the explosion in one is balanced out by the comparative lack of it in the other, the compact clarity of words in one reconciliation in one is balanced by the failure to communicate with words in the other. Firoz and Maan reconcile through touch and gestures, Haresh and Lata through written words on paper.

Both Maan and Lata realize the fault of their deviations and are disenchanted by the end of the book. Lata leaves Kabir and chooses Haresh, Maan is leaves Saaeda Bai and chooses Firoz. (the author states very clearly that the whole incident has made Saaeda realise she's in love with Maan, and Maan has had a similar realisation about Firoz.)

The two weddings which frame the story are significant. At Savita's wedding Lata thinks very unfavorably of marriage, particularly arranged marriage. At her own, she has accepted it. She hasn't had the opportunity to get to know Haresh and love him in the conventional sense the way she has with Amit and Kabir, but she's sure she will learn to love him. The love story is subverted, but the marriage is not.

Maan and Firoz's marriage is a symbolic, symbolized through the rose petal. In many Indian weddings, flower petals are showered on the new couple and considered a blessing from the gods. In Savita's wedding, a rose petal is stuck on Maan's head and he complains that "these things float out of nowhere". Firoz gently brushes it away. But in Lata's wedding when one or two rose petals floats from somewhere, neither of them brush it off. They have accepted their relationship and what they mean to each other. The "marriage" is of course not a real marriage, here the marriage is subverted but the love is not.

Lata and Haresh's story takes place entirely on the surface of the narrative, all important conversations and letters are shown to the reader. Maan and Firoz's story takes place in the wings, the reader has to read between the lines and piece the information together. Lata and Haresh do not have a single encounter where the reader is not present, but not so with Maan and Firoz. We see the start of what is obviously a sex scene (perhaps put in to remove any doubt of interpretation) but as soon as it starts it is cut off to the next chapter. We don't hear their conversation, we are not privy to their past. Beyond the first apology, we don't get to see how they reconcile and rebuild their relationship, we only see them laughing together in the end. As queer narratives have done in the past, their story exists between the lines of the official (heteronormative) narrative.

I think this was deliberately done by the author. Considering Vikram Seth is bisexual himself I wouldn't be surprised if he meant to use Lata and Haresh's story as a cover to tell Maan and Firoz's story.
