AU where Aang wakes up 30 years earlier 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hello, @kibutsulove !!! Got it!

1. Aang wakes up when Hakoda (oldest but smallest of the group except for Aang) 16, Kya is 15, Bato is 15, Ozai is 16, Ursa is 14, and Zhao is 17. When Aang does wake up, he’s woken up thanks to Zhao attacking the village on his first mission and shooting fireballs at Aang’s iceberg (he leaves before noticing Aang). Hakoda, Kya and Bato grab him and bring him back to the village to rest up. Hakoda loves Appa so much while Kya and Bato are digging their nails into the saddle to stay alive.

2. The journey includes Hakoda, Kya and Bato traveling to the North Pole because Aang comes out of the iceberg a decade after Hama is taken away, so he needs to go there to learn waterbending. Hakoda just flat out tackles Pakku and starts punching him when he finds out who he is (Kanna deserved better). Zhao is on their tail the whole time because he’s trying to show off his skills to Ozai (who is too busy hating his showboating brother). Kya and Zhao have one or two or six sessions where they just talk about liking an idiot.

3. When Zhao fails, Ozai wants to go help him (Ursa kind of comes along because she believes the two will die without her) before Iroh (who is also now after Aang) can capture the Avatar. Let’s just say they aren’t as well oiled a team as Team Azula. Ozai is mission driven, Zhao is jealous because Ursa is betrothed to Ozai, and Ursa really is just doing her (she could not possibly care less about capturing Aang but she does find two of his companions kind of cute (bisexual!Ursa))

4. Iroh tries a baby’s first “siege on Ba Sing Se” while Ozai, Zhao and Ursa slip into the city disguises as Kyoshi Warriors. Aang’s earthbending teacher here would probably be Tyro (16) (who sadly isn’t a little blind girl but he is up for all kinds of chaos). Hakoda, Kya and Bato are living their best nonbender lives and watching Tyro through Aang around. (Aang: Aren’t you guys going to help?! Hakoda: You go this! Kya: We believe in you! Bato: Unbroken bones are overrated. Aang: 😑). Kya manages to confess to Hakoda in Ba Sing Se and the two start dating right before the city is taken over by the three Fire Nationals. Aang wouldn’t be killed here because there’s no way to bring him back to life.

5. Tyro, Hakoda, Kya, Bato and Aang all head to the Fire Nation and infiltrate it. While they’re there, Tyro does a prison break, Hakoda learns how to use a new weapon, Kya and Ursa have a secret girls day, Bato goes into the Fire Nation military for a single day and Aang helps out a town. (Kya: I can’t believe that all only took us two months. Hakoda: Yeah, it seems like the rules of time don’t really exist anymore). Meanwhile, Ozai, Ursa and Zhao return as war heroes with Ozai happily rubbing his success in Iroh’s face (but still not getting much positive attention from Azulon if any attention). Zhao grows even more jealous as Ozai and Ursa have to plan their wedding (which Ursa confessed to Kya she doesn’t want to go through with).

Fic that made me laugh: Worst Disney Princess Ever by @hushed-chorus.

So technically I listened to Demi read this in the discord, but who's counting. This is such a cute and fun fic in the absolute best way. The pigeons! The undead plotting rats! Baz's resignation to being the Disney princess with his undead animals 😂 Demi, hearing you read this was my first time reading (or listening) to this fic, and it was INCREDIBLE.

Fic that made me cry: you never quite say (but i hear) by @that-was-anticlimactic.

Yeah, this fic made me sob. It reminded me so much of my best friend, who also has ADHD and a loud voice and loves talking about their special interests. I adore them so much and love listening to them talk, even if I don't really get DND. I remember immediately sending them this fic after reading it. This is such a special fic. I absolutely adore it, and Zuko is the best boyfriend.

Honorary mention to He's Cruel But You Don't Have to Be by notanotherfanficwriter. Definitely made me cry. Soren's character arc, especially in Finnegrin's Wake, is incredibly cathartic.

yknow in regards to trans hcs, im surprised not more people hc sokka as trans. obviously there are more than a lot of the other characters, but when someone asked me if i had any trans hcs once, I thought abt it and the conclusion I came to was Sokka

i feel like i've seen a fair amount of people headcanon him as nonbinary, which falls under the trans umbrella depending on how you define things. that's where i'm at with him. sokka puts a lot of pressure on himself to live up to a warrior-masculine ideal, and his arc is about realizing his strengths outside of that - creativity versatility intelligence, as piandao put it. and while that could just be an arc about learning to embrace a different kind of masculinity, it's an arc that includes a scene of him dressing in drag and looking down at himself in awe, as well as the scene i put at the beginning of my queer sokka compilation. (the tags on that vid were mostly "omg he's bisexual" which isn't wrong but i threw that in as a nod to him being nonbinary.) i don't think he's transfem - i think most of his issues with masculinity are about the narrow ideal of it - but i do think he'd be comfortable playing around with different gender expressions and wouldn't mind being gendered differently in the kyoshi warrior uniform.

being the scientific guy (gender neutral) that he is, i imagine at some point post canon he's like "well when you analyze gender it really doesn't make any sense! like if women aren't better at sewing and men aren't better at war and it's just some anatomy what's the point? plus anatomy isn't even that binary! gender is ridiculous!" he's baffled when other people agree with him but also affirm that they identify with a gender. objectively speaking, gender is stupid? why would you do that?

(to be honest sokka, i don't know. because that is very much my view of gender and yet when i questioned my identity i still came to the conclusion that i'm a cis woman. my gender is "girl, but on purpose this time".)

i've also seen transmasc sokka, where his struggles with masculinity are because he feels he needs to prove it extra hard. that's a pretty interesting take but not the one i feel personally. he more strikes me as someone who's rigidly stuck in what he thinks he was born to be. he idolizes his father as the warrior ideal he's supposed to live up to, not realizing he can have a sense of self outside that legacy. i think an important step in sokka's gender journey would be realizing his dad is not some hyper-manly warrior. according to bato's stories, hakoda's a fun goofy guy who loves coming up with pranks and riding animals (very aang-like, tbh). like i've said, the vibe i get from him is dad who builds legos and tinkers around with shit in his garage. not gender non-conforming, exactly, but definitely not hypermasculine. also i think hakoda's bisexual.

If it could scare the avatar’s companion and the crown prince, Shyu knew it must be terrifying. “I have some questions about the avatar,” Zhao drawled as he stood before Sokka’s cell. “And you will answer them if you know what’s good for you.” Despite the mounting fear in his eyes, Sokka lifted his chin in desperate defiance as he crossed his arms and stood upright. “And when I don’t answer them?” Zhao smiled.

Sokka tried to rescue Sage Shyu from the collapse of Roku's temple. Instead, he got himself, Shyu, and Zuko captured by Commander Zhao.

And Zhao never wastes an opportunity.

Sokka whimpered and tried to kick Zhao away. At his angle, that meant hitting Zhao with soles of his feet. Pained whines pierced Shyu’s heart as Sokka’s feeble attempt to protect himself backfired. Not only did the boy hurt himself slamming his boiled skin against Zhao’s armor, but Zhao took the opportunity to press Sokka’s singed feet back down on the hard shelf. Sokka twisted in pain, but Zhao’s grip remained firm. Prince Zuko actually rose to his feet, but at a sharp look from Shyu he closed his mouth before he could yell anything that would make this worse for Sokka.

Hi @waterfire1848 ! How’s its going?

I just had a thought regarding are earlier conversation with Azutara and Zukka coming out to their parents. You mentioned that you head cannoned both Kya and Hakoda as Bi. Which gave me an idea

In a modern AU we’re we have both “alive Kya” and “good Ozai” (or at least somewhat decent) .

So what if in a modern Au, what if Ozai, Ursa, Hakoda, and Kya, don’t approve approve of Azutara or Zukka. Not because of simple-minded homophobia or other thoughts of that ilk. But because Ozai, Ursa, Kya, and and Hakoda are all Bisexual and are a swingers couple. With the Water/Fire parents exclusively being open with each other alone.

So they disapprove of their child (Azutara and Zukka) SO (significant other) because of how awkward the whole thing is to them. Since both sets of the Water/Fire sibs are together.

I believe that all four would eventually get over the awkwardness factor and accept the relationship joyfully. But would probably keep their own secret to the grave.

Just Imagine the horror though, if in the future when Azutara/Zukka are married with children of their own, they learn that all four of their parents used to “knock boots” as it were.

I cannot put into words how much I love this idea and how much it made me laugh🤣🤣🤣! This is hilarious!

The four know the other two have kids and they go to the same school but it's not something they talk about when they decide to "meet up". Plus, I can see Azula/Katara and Sokka/Zuko keeping their relationship under wraps for a while so the parents don't even know their son and daughter are dating someone until they come out and say it.

“But would probably keep their own secret to the grave.” Definitely! When they're "introduced" at a dinner in an attempt to introduce the families to one another, they freak out. Kya and Hakoda are already there and eating when Ursa and Ozai step in the house and they just start choking on their food.

Katara: You already know Mr and Mrs. Agni?

Kya: You could say that.

Zuko: How?

Ozai:....Business deal.

Hakoda: Yup. We have a business agreement together.

Sokka: Cool. Saves us the trouble of small talk.

Azutara and Zukka are all grown up with their own kids and all four parents have recently passed away. They go to their houses to help clean stuff out and find old letters and pictures. Their kids don't know why they spend the rest of the day screaming and crying.

I HONEST TO GOD BELIEVED CHENAS KNIFE BEING MISSING BECAUSE OF TOM NOOK WAS GOING TO BE CHENAS DOWNFALL AND KILL HIM AT THE LAST LINE 😭😭😭😭😭 besides that fucking horror I am overwhelmed by the sweetness and the emotional pain this chapter was <3 <3 <3 zukka was cute (SOKKA BEING PROTECTED AND A LOSER BISEXUAL TEEN BOY), tom nook keeps winning (BI4BI KINGS LEGENDS LOSERS CANT CHANGE MY MIND) and also the AMAZING transition of words in zukos mindset that I think is going to change a LOT for him. "good or bad" can't exist, and even when zuko was being silly and avoiding sokkas answers (cuz he's emotionally constipated lmao) was to me a smaller example that people don't fit into categories like that? It was super surface level there, but when you go deeper into it it's really not that simple and zukos perception of that is completely warped because he HAS done bad things, and the self-hatred and shame of that has convinced himself there is only one category. It's BEAUTIFUL I love it and I'm excited <3

Anyways, lastly I request you stop making me sob every time hakoda touches zukos scar. Stop it entirely. It's literally devastating knowing that zuko had just a small essence of hope his father was going to touch him before he burned him and now he thinks of violence every time and another father appears in his life and his touch is always warm and kind and not burning and I'm losing my mind over here JUST STOP IT AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good fic top tier goodbye

also LOVE ur understanding of the sword metaphor bc even what you said about sokka is true; like as much as sokka ultimately falls into zuko's very rigid cataegory of 'good', he's still not easily forgiving and he can be mean and snappish and has a lot of characteristics zuko sees in himself, and of course if they're a Zuko Characteristic in his mind, then they HAVE to be bad, so what gives? it's interesting to me bc in book 1 zuko had effectively come to the conclusion that both swords = balance and that was a GOOD thing, like we see it in his talk with hakoda in ch13, but it's something he's having to relearn with a much broader worldview and some really horrible experiences and this chapter was HUGE for his progress in that regard.

The Boiling Rock Part 1 Re-Watch

Ohhh this is SUCH a fun episode. So fucking fun. Ok, full disclosure this is another tipsy re-watch post, I won't lie, I'm drinking a margarita. Basically, this episode is about how Sokka & Zuko have a socially awkward dynamic with a mix of genuine care & a complex history, making for a funny & cute friendship & how Suki & Sokka have a strong romantic love & Zuko & Suki get along & work well together instantly & they should totally be a throuple right? No? Okay, well, this episode at the very least did say Zukki (Zukkai? Sukkako?) rights & I'm standing by that.

Anyway. Real talk. Sokka's determination to attempt to rescue his father even knowing that it may be a doomed mission is heartbreaking. He's done making plans that fail. He just misses his dad & hates leaving him behind after spending so much time separated from him. I love how Zuko dramatically waited up for Sokka. And I loved their awkward little conversation while they rode the war balloon. I've written before that it really hurts my heart that Zuko doesn't even consider Azula for a second when Sokka asks about people that Zuko left behind & yeah, I think about that every time I watch. Zuko "didn't want to get Mai involved" but didn't care at all about ratting out Azula. I didn't mention this in my DOBS re-watch post because I wanted to focus on Zuko's amazing moment of standing up to his father. And I seriously don't like it when people use Zuko's ignorance about Azula's position to bash Zuko. I'm not doing that. He is absolutely not being coldhearted or cruel, he just....doesn't understand the position Azula is in at ALL. I just think it's SAD. The fire siblings are so fucking tragic...

Anyway.

See - if I start talking about the fire siblings that's ALL I'll end up talking about lol - I have to talk about other stuff.

anyway. I really loved the scene between Sokka & Zuko when they're discussing the absence of Hakoda at the prison. Zuko is trying so hard to emulate Iroh, even though he doesn't really understand Iroh's proverbs at ALL, he knows his uncle loves him & that Iroh is very smart & he's TRYING so hard to be like that & I just...Ooh, I'm getting all emo. Anyway. "Take a bite out of the silver sandwich."

Sokka & Suki's reunion was SO good. I cracked up at Sokka trying to do a callback to their previous reunion & Suki flipping him on his back before the two actually got a cute reunion.

And then Sokka immediately had his bisexual awakening!

I loved Sokka's very smart escape plan based on his engineering ingenuity.

But what I loved even more? What really just had me going insane?

Sokka: [Standing.] Is that supposed to make me feel better? [Sokka moves away.]

Zuko: Even though you'll probably fail over and over and over again ...

Sokka: Seriously, not helping.

Zuko: [Grabs Sokka's shoulder.] You have to try every time. You can't quit because you're afraid you might fail.

Chit Sang: [Standing by the cooler boat.] Hey, if you two are done cuddling, can we get a move on?

Sokka: No. I'm staying. You guys go. [To Suki.] You've been here long enough.

Suki: I'm not leaving without you, Sokka.

Zuko: I'm staying, too.
