Hypothetically, were there any "classic" dinosaurs that we could have domesticated the way that we've domesticated chickens and ducks? Which ones do you think and why?
Unrelated question because I know you have birds: I know that a lot of parrots are taken from the wild and sold as pets; is it possible to ethically be a parrot's first home? Do people breed these guys?
re domesticating nonavian dinos: yes, definitely. small ornithopods and ornithischians, but also smaller theropods like, ironically, Velociraptor. any that have a social structure we can insert ourselves into so they think of us as family, and there were probably several
re parrots: congratulations! very very very few parrots are wild caught nowadays in the united states at least. most pet parrots come from breeders or shelters. so, if you get a bird from a breeder, you have to make sure they are ethical both in how they care for their birds and how they conduct the breeding process. shelter, just make sure its a good one, though of course birds in bad shelters need to be brought home too
in fact, there's a shelter crisis going on right now for parrots. if someone can take care of them (and that's a big if, trust me), then there is a slight moral imperative for them to do so at this time.

seeing a linnie at the berkeley bird shop a few weeks ago has got me thinking about pet birds again. I was sad but did not get it because i know shops are bad place to support and also I was afraid to jump into it. The shop would not say who the breeder was unless I bought him. i am considering a linnie breeder in the northern part of the state, though. I would foster, but suspect I'm not going to see any lineolated parakeets at the local bird group.
So that means I'd have to figure out how to prep for a bird myself. I know the basics so it seems like it should be straightforward, but my anxiety is putting "buts" in front of everything. I wish that would shut off for two seconds but gotta work with it.
My landlord is even willing to change our policy to two birds if I'm afraid of one being lonely. He didn't want any pets originally, so it's nice to know our landlord trusts us not to mess up the place. Maybe I'll see if I can chat with some current bird owners.
I had some misophonia issues with the cockatiels i fostered in 2021 (constant calling) but not sure if that is a long term thing and if i could eventually be okay with it (I filter out dog barks pretty well after having had 5 dogs).
Here's the linnie i saw in the store by the way.. he matched my hoodie.. 🥹

the "strange place" could be a private wildlife collector? i know the buying and selling of wild animals as pets can be pretty bad in the uk (or at least it is w/ birds of prey? that's abt what i know)
OH that's a good idea, that's going to be one of my top choices for if I DO end up needing to change the "twoleg den" in the upcoming super edition. Private wildlife collectors are a HUGE problem because the laws on simply owning exotic animals (as long as they're not covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act) are suuuuper lax in the UK, and the Zoo Licensing Act only applies if you accept general admission.
(and even then, specifically, you can take admission a limited amount of times a year. James Wellington's Animal Welfare Nightmare Extravaganza, beloved winter tradition, £25 each, kiddies of edible height get in free)
Birds in particular are a huuuge issue because there's big oversights in the laws surrounding the keeping of birds of prey. You don't actually need a license to own any birds except ostriches and cassowaries, or one of the five destructive invasive birds. Your pet eagle just needs to be registered so they know you didn't snatch it from the wild. Licenses will only apply if you're breeding, selling, or using it for falconry.
Maybe I could even tie this hypothetical antagonist guy to Sharptooth/One Eye/The God of Summer's previous human incarnation, on some off-chance the series ends up using this villain again. That could be kinda neat.

selkie mothiva's fame is like a combination of her canon idol singer status and grumpy cat-esque internet meme virality. she's literally the source of every single cat video in bugaria
unfortunately she only really gets to wear her pelt when she's being recorded or photographed because it's in her contract and the manager(s) usually keep the pelt for contract enforcement reasons. she has. no privacy ever
she is however in possession of zasp's pelt most of the time. he's fine, he gave it to her as part of the selkie courtship thing. this does mean she has a degree of control over him, but how much of it is actually the magic and how much is his... naturally devoted attitude is anyone's guess

Parrots MIGHT be a good fit for you, reader, if:
you have space for a cage
you don't mind noise. if you actively like noise, that's a plus
you like and/or worship chaos
you're okay with having permanent toddlers who can fly with bolt cutters attached to their faces, for multiple decades, or possibly the rest of your life
you enjoy pure silliness
you are infinitely patient
you're not that into fancy cooking
you aren't actively in financial crises all the time
you live close enough to an avian vet to bring your bird there, because a specialized vet is a must
you'll note most human beings do not have these qualifications. Some do... Most don't.

somehow the thought of you firing a gun is so crazy to me, it's like someone said their bunny had once killed a man or something
ohh that's really funny 😭 ig it's one of those odd things where being raised rurally gives you some uhhhh unexpected? character traits that run counter to your temperament a little. my grandpa was a hunter and all of us kids were allowed to shoot one of his rifles once. i think my parents only allowed it because teenagers often start shooting as a sport quite young around here anyway - it's a Whole Thing in my region.

I know that J.K.Rowling always said her works weren’t influenced by Tolkien, but I’m sorry, I don’t buy it. Pass over Shelob/Ungloliant and Aragog. There are loads of giant spiders out there. I also think that the parallels between Gandalf/Frodo and Dumbledore/Harry both go back to something older. Ring wraiths and Dementors? Alright, ancient fear in general. Kreacher and Gollum? Coincidence, maybe. BUT I won’t get over Griphook.
Griphook works himself up in Shell Cottage about the sword of Gryffindor belonging to the Goblins, claiming the descendants of Gryffindor having stolen it (which is funny, really, as the sword gives its allegiance to everyone worthy). Bill later explains about Goblin ownership, that they consider it rented only and want all Goblin-made things being returned to them after the original purchaser dies, or else will consider it theft.
Yeah, well, everyone knowing me knows what’s coming, right? That is almost word-perfect what the smiths of Nogrod say about the Nauglamir. That is their justification in the end for murdering, for nearly destroying a kingdom that was their ally until then.

Don't EVER give animals as gifts. Even if you think the person wants one.
You think someone wants an animal? First, make them prove it.
1. They need to do research.
Does the animal do better alone or is it social and needs more of it's species to be around?
What does the animal need to live? This includes food, what is their potting situation, do they need a tank, how big of a tank if they need one, do they need a cage, how much space do they need, what exercise do they need to get, do things need to be different in winter and how so, can you bath them in water, what food and water containers are best for them, etc.
If they want a more exotic animal, they need to find the nearest vet that can handle their type of pet. Check reviews for that vet, check the second nearest vet that can treat that animal, check for emergency clinics that can help in the middle of the night. Compare prices of the vets. Check on pet insurance.
2. Ok, the person is still interested in getting a pet, now what?
You have to get all the supplies you need to take care of that pet, short of getting food so it doesn't go bad. Too expensive to do, or don't want to waste your time getting all that stuff for the person to end up not wanting the pet after all after this step? Then getting a pet is not right for you or them. If you do get all that stuff, and they find out they don't want an animal, donate it or sell it.
Now, they need to go through the steps of taking care of the pet they can do without the pet. If your getting a dog, they need to go on a walk the length appropriate for walking the dog three to four times a day. They need at least pretend to fill the food and water bowls one to two times a day. They want a cat? Get a litter box, buy litter box liners, scoop and litter. Have the person put in the liner and the liter and have them go through it with the scoop twice a day. Want to get them an aquatic animal? Get a tank the appropriate size, have them fill it and clean it the appropriate amount of times for the animal(s) they want. This kind of thing should be applied to whatever animal they want and you should do it for no less than two months, but probably should be a whole year if whether effects the animal and where you live. They don't want to do it that long? They will get bored of it if they have the animal and then you'll either do it or give it up. Don't get them an animal if they can't stick to the routine of caring for it.
3. They've gotten this far, it's time for the pet getting! But wait...
Do NOT surprise them with the animal. Let them do their research on where the closest adoption center or place to get the animal they want is.
Take them to pick out the animal. HOWEVER, do NOT force them to pick out an animal saying, "it's now or never." And be sure to let them know they don't have to pick out an animal this time, they can come back later to try to see if another animal fits them. Each person and each animal are different, so not any dog or cat or bird or whatever will fit just anyone. The match has to be there.
If you can't be patient enough for the person to pick out the right animal for them, YOU should not be getting them an animal.
It can take a while to find the right pet. And I promise you, the right pet is worth it.
Edit: Also, big one: Do not let your cats be outdoor animals. They are an invasive species as outdoor animals and have make 81 species of birds extinct. Domestic cats or their descendants ARE NOT MEANT TO BE OUTDOOR ANIMALS!
