Thanks for a great discussion today, Sea--I always love it when you talk music around here. Think how much we'll have to talk about when LT1 comes out! Waiting for a sign, Louis, WAITING FOR A SIGN!!! 😘💞😍☀️👌🌼
I just listened to that snippet from “I went to Amsterdam without ya, and all I could do was think about ya, oh oh oh” five times in a row. I’m so starved for Louis content.
There’s so much to love in that little snippet?
For one, I can see Louis’ mouth when he sings the words. It sounds weird, but as a musician, one gets used to watching singers’ mouths move certain ways when they form certain syllables. When he sings, “think about you,” the “about” sounds like “pout” and looks like a pout— the mouth closed rather than wide open, sullen and reminiscing. Halfway between “bit” and “but.”
The guitar playing that sets a syncopated, reggaton or trap rhythm but cascades down a scale, like a waterfall (this is the harmonic progression of Pachelbel’s canon).
The underlying kick bass/808 marks the downbeat. You can hear all the syncopated rhythms all going on at once: the kick, the guitar, the voice. It’s a real orchestra effect going on, like a walk through Amsterdam— the water flowing through the river, bicycles, pedestrians strolling, roiling and conflicted thoughts inside someone’s restless heart, the birds overhead.
The overlying synth wash creates an ambient frame, like a sonic aurora borealis. I know it’s not the best recording, but it made me think of twittering songbirds in the sky with their songs. It almost makes the song sound like it was recorded in a botanical garden with birds flying around.
An actual song that incorporates birdcall is Björk’ The Gate from her album “Utopia.” It’s a strange but beautiful song that she thinks feature birds that “sound like R2-D2.” Another song with this rich harmonium of sound is Haley Heynderickx’s amazing Show You a Body. Indie artists have the best sound effects, hands down. No wonder Louis likes them, eh? They take chances and are weird.
All of this music is in that 12-second snippet and it’s killing me that I can’t hear the rest.
