As a multi-shipping bisexual person who has been crying tears of joy for the past two episodes over the bi-buck story arc - I need you all to know that the weirder you guys are about it (and let's be real right now, you guys are being INCREDIBLY weird about it), the more uncomfortable I, an actual real life queer person, get with Buddie.

I genuinely love Buddie, one of my all time favorite fics across any fandom is "My Fingerprints Smeared on Your Heart", but I'm very hesitant to believe it will ever happen. So when ABC brings in Tommy and starts a VERY WELL WRITTEN and BEAUTIFUL queer story that UPLIFTS MY HEART and then I go into fan spaces to see people trashing on BuckTommy, or screaming "no Buck thats the wrong guy", or wanting the relationship to end with Buck cheating (which is incredibly biphobic btw) with Eddie, or implying/hoping that Tommy is an abuser that Buck can be saved from by Eddie, or any of the countless other scenarios that turn Buck's happily-and-safely-exploring-his-sexuality arc into small-or-traumatic plot point for the purpose of making Buddie canon it makes me feel deeply uncomfortable with Buddie and my fellow 911 fans. And that makes me sad, because I love fan spaces and I love interacting with people who like the same things as me!

Also, please learn the difference between queerbaiting and queer coding.

I feel like a lot of the reasoning presents as biphobic, plus most of the people I ask shoot me down and call me inherently lesbophobic for not understanding, so I'm not sure how to feel about it

it's really just bullshit and i'm glad you decided to ask!

this behavior definitely has its roots in lesbian separatism. there was a push in lesbian spaces in i want to say the late 80's to early 90's to remove anyone who wasn't a "Woman Loving Woman". they started kicking anyone out who associated with men at all. they also started kicking out butches who were "too butch", trans men, and any other men and mascs who may have attended the space. and they started inventing all kinds of weird words like Womyn and asserting that women and lesbians were superior to everyone else.

it got really out of control. during that time it was really common for lesbians to reject bisexual women, especially if they had ever slept with a man. for. whatever reason. i don't know if they think they get guy cooties by proxy or what, but they were so staunch about it that they would just. refuse to interact with you if you even had friends who were men. it got that bad. they were kicking out bisexual women and people because they were tainted now, or whatever. a bisexual woman was no longer pure or whatever the hell. lesbians and their partners had to be STRICTLY Womyn Loving Womyn or else they don't belong in lesbian spaces. they became SUPER pushy about it being for lesbians ONLY and NOT those "gross filthy bisexuals".

that's why we're seeing this now. we're seeing a resurgence of this rhetoric in real time. radfems are now what the lesbian separatists were back then. same group of people, different name. they change hats every few decades but their politics stay the same. it's dumb as bricks because if you ask me, you're not entitled to know who your partner has been with before they got together with you. you don't need to know that. and it doesn't change anything about you if your partner chooses to date or sleep with multiple genders. it's just petty. they would act like that person was a man now just because they associated with men and would treat them like an icky parasite. it's seriously just unreal how these people think and act. and it's still normalized in lesbian culture to this day

bisexuals can be in lesbian relationships. bisexuals can be lesbians. lesbians can date bisexuals. the world will not come grinding to a halt if a lesbian marries a woman who has slept with men. that doesn't make that person "tainted". people gotta stop with this weird culty bullshit. we're not treating people as individuals anymore. it's gross.

I've been thinking about your post on fandom misogyny vs societal heteronormativity and the whole "I only write m/m because I'm Progressive! Ew, straights, yuck" stance (I will ignore the underlying biphobic vibes and how these people don't write f/f either for the sake of this post, but these are also issues), and I think people need to be reminded that you don't have to write romance at all?

You can write a man and a woman having an adventure/a meaningful conversation/a fun bonding scene/complex antagonistic relationship and not have them have sex or fall in love. They can happily return to their same gender partners when the story is over.

It also addresses a lot of other excuses people have for not writing women. "I headcanon her as ace/aro/lesbian, and don't ship her with anyone." Write a genfic about her. "I love the dynamic between these women, but I see them as sisters and not lovers." Write a genfic about them. "I don't want to write about vulvas/lesbian sex." Write a genfic, or a fade-to-black story (or headcanon one or both of them as trans, which f/f writers also do). "She's too good for any of the potential love interests." Write a genfic about her. "I can't write stories without my main male blorbo and I only ship him with my other male blorbo." Write a genfic where he interacts with a female character platonically.

Whenever the topic of fandom misogyny comes up, so many people throw their hands in the air, offer up One Reason why they just Can't write women/het/femslash and keep on going, but there are many different stories out there. Just a thought.

I think each person has their own interpretation, we can't be 100% sure that our is the right one, as melvins can't be sure that theirs of ''straight Mike'' is the correct one, or as gay Mike believers can't be sure either - at least until we have the last season, and we have an explanation from the writers!

Personally, I agree with you that he did have a crush on her and that it's not even that much important if he did or didn't, and I know for sure that for some people that are gay mike believers it's just about wanting that specific representation + interpreting the subtext in the show in that way and I think that's perfectly fair

There are also some people who think that it would be less meaningful if he was bi compared to if he was gay, and I don't agree with that because I find it dismissive of bisexual identities, our own discovery journey, and our own fight against heteronormativity and internalized homophobia (yes, bisexual people have that too)

I just block those people because they are usually very hostile to others that have a different opinion and want to go on trying to change your mind or use ''reasons'' to explain their pov that are biphobic thought processes whether they know it or not, if you're talking with one of them you will notice it easily because they start being offensive randomly instead of just minding their business and keep making their own posts in their own blog as they should lmao

but thankfully the majority of my interactions in the fandom have been positive and lots of people are normal about that possibility and don't really care that much even if they have a different preference for the story in their mind, they have stated that it would be okay anyway, surround yourself with them and you'll have a nice stay here, because even if you talk about your pov they're not going to be assholes about it even if they disagree

but also make sure to do the same on the other side of it, don't act like they're delusional for thinking that Mike is gay, he might be, and it's perfectly possible to insert that storyline in the finale too if the writers wanted to

People look for any excuse to erase bi-sexuals, especially a character they want to date women. The latter - fine - it’s fiction do what you want but do not use it as a reason to promote subtle biphobia or annoyance at a show that they haven’t made a character officially lesbian.

(I get there were gonna make her a lesbian and it wasn’t shown, but that’s zero excuse to be biphobic and also idk why people latch onto traits and coin them as like sexuality calling cards. I’m bi but I had someone say I must be a lesbian because of how I hold a coffee mug and she got quite passionate about it…like girl? What?)

Yeah and like, it's not that they were going to make her a lesbian and it wasn't shown; they were originally going to make her a lesbian then they didn't. Obviously it's fine and great that fans take that and go "cool, I'll do it myself" and write a lesbian version of her. I'm bi and I love writing bi Emily. But the people writing the scripts and the actress playing the character aren't secretly creating a lesbian character and trying to sneak evidence in behind the network's back - reasoning aside, they had the idea to make her a lesbian and then they scrapped it. Again, writing fic and meta and creating art and whatever else to explore that possibility is great and I'm so glad there are people doing it, but scouring the show for evidence it was intended all along is. . . misguided, imo. And results in a lot of casual biphobia and general misogyny too.

Creating this dichotomy where women are either lesbians or sitting with their ankles politely crossed is just. . . bad, actually. Looking for evidence a woman who canonically has a bunch of close friendships with men and works in a field where she needs to interact with respect and empathy with people from all backgrounds is a "man hater" is gross, imo. Like idk how else to say it. It's just gross. Women can be attracted to men without falling for every "the ideal woman behaves like this" trapping of the patriarchy, you know?

Anyway. I try to just block and move on. I don't want to invite any fandom wars to my doorstep. I just genuinely think passing on this false dichotomy where you're either a lesbian or a hopeless victim of the patriarchy is bad when there are a bunch of young women out there growing up in fandom, and none of us get to choose who we're attracted to. Couple of things. Regarding previous anon and being disappointed in Lou's comments, I'm not seeing what people are taking offense. He doesn't say that he is better at playing a gay character because he and OS are so masculine (and presumably straight). My interpretation of his words boil down to this:

When the audience see a man and a women close together on the screen, they assume sexual tension so no surprise when they kiss. When they see two guys that they KNOW are gay, they make the same assumptions. The fact the both he and Buck were presumably straight, it was a surprise because the audience didn't see what was coming until it happened. And that's it. And the use of the term "masculine" doesn't mean that gay guys aren't masculine. It just refers to how certain people perceive certain characteristics. Lou also goes on to talk about hugging male friends and kissing them on the cheek so he's very much about challenging notions of traditional masculinity. I feel like we are so used to assuming the worst of people particularly when only interacting virtually.

In contrast, OS did in fact say that he wants Buck to fuck around 1.0 style all the while forgetting that we didn't in fact LIKE Buck 1.0 until he started dating Abby. Buck 1.0 was an asshole who only got a bit of a pass because he was young and damaged. A return to that from a guy pushing middle age will be just pathetic. One last note, the break up would have been more honest if it came from Buck since clearly Tommy is looking for love and Buck/OS is looking to screw around some more. Honestly that's how I interpreted Lou's comments as well. His wording could have been better and I am disappointed in HOW he said it, but I didn't particularly see anything offensive. That said, I'm not gay. Even though I don't see his comments as offensive, that doesn't mean someone who is actually gay wouldn't find it offensive.

As I've mentioned though, I am bi and Oliver's comments were offensive. I truly don't understand why certain people can't grasp that fact. I don't think he needs to be shunned or anything, but his comments were very offensive ESPECIALLY after saying he didn't want to play into bisexual stereotypes. And I agree, a return to that phase in Buck's life would be another example of poor writing. In the real world, a person Buck's age could sleep around as much as he wants with whoever he wants. But in a fictional show that will never be able to go on forever? It's time for him to finally settle down with someone. AND that's another reason why the comments are so hurtful. These are fictional characters who often give real people the opportunity to explore themselves. So to be showing us that a relationship with a newly out bisexual person can't work because they have to sleep around first and really experience being bi is just so cruel to the people who may have discovered their own bisexuality because of this storyline.
