It’s a simple dish that’s found everywhere and loved all around the globe. We asked the culinary elite — chefs laden with Michelin stars and other accolades — for their favorite burgers when they are having a sneaky time out from gastronomy.

Neil Perry of Rockpool Bar & Grill is the big-name chef behind Burger Project, which works with local suppliers. The patty is hand-made, 100% grass-fed beef. Wagyumafia, Tokyo The Cutlet Sandwich from Wagyumafia at Nakameguro station is made with thick-sliced pure Kobe beef, breaded and deep fried, sandwiched between two slices of Japanese milk bread with a secret house-made sauce. It harkens back to the original burger at Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, yet is distinctly Japanese, says three-Michelin star chef Kyle Connaughton. The prices are something else. Salzburg scene....

After coffee and cereal in the room, we bundled up for some adventures in Salzburg.  We crossed over the river on the walking bridge and spent some time in the old town.  There were Christmas Markets, ice skating rinks, and a magical Christmas feeling all around.

We listened to the Rick Steves’ audio walking tour of Salzburg on our iPhones, stopping them simultaneously when we wanted to stop to examine things further.  I highly recommend doing this.  Rick gives enough history to make things interesting, takes you by the most popular areas, and gives directions for the walking path so you don’t get lost.  Best of all it’s free, and on your own time frame.  He has tours for all around Europe.  

We went to the Salzburg Cathedral and saw the baptismal font where Mozart was baptized.  He also played the organ for the church there when he was young.  We went to the Museum of Mozart’s birthplace and family home, and learned a lot about his life and family.  I even stood in the room where he was born!

We climbed up the steps to the Fortress Castle, and toured the castle.  It was large and interesting.  The views of the city from the top were spectacular, and there were little Christmas Markets there as well where you could get a snack and mulled wine while enjoying the view.  There’s also a concert that is held there at night, with the option of a dinner.  It is advertised as having spectacular views.  However, since the sun sets before 4:30pm in Austria, and we live in Vienna with an abundance of concerts (Mozart’s adult home), we opted to skip this concert.  Bill enjoyed the old canons that were pointed out of the windows, but the history is that this fortress was never in a battle.  We rode the funicular (tram) down the hill to exit the castle.  The ride down is included in the castle ticket.

After touring the old cemetery and popping into the oldest bakery in Austria, we headed for some apple strudel & hot chocolate (I was able to get a vegan version of both!).  Having dessert first, we decided it was dinner time and went for a burger and some amazing sweet potato fries at “Bioburger”.  Next stop, “Wien & Co” to get a bottle of wine to go with a game of Rummikub back in the room - where it was nice and warm.
