Basically. I got screwed.

I am very sorry for how relatively quiet this blog has been but I've been dealing with a very unpleasant situation the last few months, and now I need help.

Essentially, I tried to help someone out, and she took advantage of me, and I have no way to recoup my losses.

Earlier this year, I moved into a new house. Before we sold the old house, a Now-Former friend ran into some trouble and was about to become homeless with pets and a small child. Not wanting them to be on the street, we offered to hold off selling the old house so she could stay there for a little while, if she could pay the cost of the mortgage on that house (because I could afford one mortgage but not two) while we helped her find somewhere more permanent.

I was not making money from this- since I was still paying the utilities and property taxes, I was actually losing money, but willing to soak that in order to help her save up and get her on her feet.

Instead, she:

Never Paid a Dime towards covering the mortgage costs like she agreed ($12,000 for the nine months she was there)

Trashed the house ($500 dump fees for the trash alone)

Let her pets piss and shit all over the house ($1,500 bio hazard cleanup, $4000 to replace the carpet and other damaged flooring)

Caused an electrical issue in the garage ($900 to repair)

Broke the washer, dryer and refrigerator ($2500 to replace)

Broke the fence ($1000 to repair)

When I told her I could no longer financially support her and that I needed to sell the old house, she illegally squatted there for a solid three months and I had to hire a lawyer and actually take her to court to get her to leave ($2,500)

The resulting stress has been, as you can imagine, stressful.

So stressful, in fact, that it aggravated a the medical conditions my husband had and made him extremely sick. He had to go to the hospital and take time off work to recover. Now the health insurance is trying to weasel out of paying his short-term disability claim.

So net, this woman has managed to cost me around $25,000 and that's not taking into account the missed paychecks and medical expenses. I do not have $25,000, and until at least $13,000 of that is spent to repair the damage she did, I legally cannot sell the house to even begin to recoup my losses.

Theoretically, I could sue this woman, but she doesn't have any money and it would be me paying even more money I don't have to get... Nothing. So I'm asking for help to cover the costs of getting the old house ready to sell, my husband's medical expenses, and other expenses incurred by this debacle:

Oh, hey, are we dropping Vandelay family headcanons in the tag today? Because oh boy, have I got some headcanons after doing the math on the various timeline stamps that we're given throughout the game.

So here's the thing, right? I honestly don't think Roxanne's kids have the same father, for starters. No judgment, for the record, just observing! Hear me out:

That fifteen-year age gap seems to indicate that Kale was born in Roxanne's early twenties, right around the time she was getting Vandelay Solutions off the ground as a startup. He has her last name, and we never hear anything about a father, which indicates to me that the bio dad was not in the picture. We know that the company's rise was meteoric, going from one woman selling products out of the back of a truck, to the biggest company of its kind, in just three years. (We also know that Vandelay Technologies was well-established enough to be doing major disaster cleanup by the time Korsica was a child, and she's about six years younger than Kale.)

What that says to me, personally, is that Roxanne was not super involved in Kale's upbringing. She was young and passionate and extremely busy with her flourishing tech startup, and I assume that by the time Kale was a small child, she had plenty of money to make sure he was being taken care of, by other people. I'm not judging her too harshly for this: I'm sure she justified it to herself as the best way to support her child, and vanishing into your brilliant work at the expense of family time is the kind of behavior that countless male tech geniuses get a free social pass for.

Fast forward to fifteen years later, and Vandelay Technologies is a stable empire. Roxanne would have been in her late thirties or early forties by that point. She's older now, more interested in parenting, and it's sinking in for her that she's mostly missed her first baby's childhood and he's grown into someone she has very little in common with. She's got all the resources she could ever need at her fingertips now, if she wanted to try single parenting again and do it properly this time.

Enter Peppermint, who I honestly think was a planned-for and dearly-beloved IVF baby. (All the physical features she shares with Kale, mostly coloring, are also shared by Roxanne, and they're built quite differently; it's not at all hard to imagine them having different genetic fathers.) This time around, Roxanne kept her home life and work life so meticulously separate that Macaron didn't even know she had a daughter. I think whether Roxanne thought of it that way or not, Peppermint was kind of a do-over child, a chance for Roxanne to be a "real" mother and a hands-on mentor.

The way Peppermint talks about her upbringing, it seems like she felt an enormous amount of pressure to follow in Roxanne's footsteps, which she eventually rebelled against by running away. She was the late-in-life child, the mother's daughter, the technically gifted protegé. With her talents and interests, she would have been the obvious choice to inherit the company and carry on the Vandelay legacy.

But did Roxanne really want Peppermint to be her little mini-me? I'm not so sure, especially considering the things she says during their reunion. Given Pep's age and the implication that she ran away when she was no older than eighteen (she's 23 and Kale has been in charge at Vandelay for at least five years), not to mention the things she says about Kale's manipulative behavior, I strongly believe that Kale had a hand in exacerbating the misunderstandings between mother and daughter. Kale obviously deeply resented his baby sister for being "Mommy's favorite", and was probably dripping poison into her ear throughout her teens, if not well before that.

Deliberately souring their relationship must have seemed like his best shot at inheriting the company, and we know Kale was eager to ride his mother's coattails and do as little real work as possible. For that matter, he must have hated the idea of being supplanted by this upstart baby who got all the attention he never did, born when he was nearly an adult himself. I have no doubt that Kale did whatever he could to convince Peppermint to get out of Roxanne's life, not to mention his own.

Fifth child of seven, he grew up knowing his first priority was helping his older brother Conficcare support their family. Though resentful of his older brothers seeming failure to give him a better life, he still spent most of his time with his brother in the groups flat, all but sleeping there after Conficcare joined Passione when he was 10. 

Muro in particular looked out for him, and Rametto saw him as everything his brother failed to be, idolising the only 9 years older Muro and seeing him as a father/mentor figure, though it wouldn't end well. 

Despite his good grades, it was inevitable that he got involved in the younger groups to prove himself, and then join Passione. He soon found that while he shared his older brothers lack of overwhelming physical strength, his sharp mind and ability to find and pull peoples strings proved he was what Muro was hoping for, a leader of the younger groups, and eventually a successor and heir to Muros position of Capo.

Despite what everyone expected, Rametto did not end up working under Muro after his induction to Passione, and instead rumours place him as someone who monitors those rumours- a member of the Data Analysis Team- with access to the cutting edge of computer and surveillance technology at his fingertips, expanding his influence even as he was taken from his home.

Rametta

With the blood still pooling from Capo Muros corpse, the teenager previously known as Rametto reinvented and then reintroduced herself as Rametto Conficcare, after her late brother, and quickly ascended to her mentors position of Capo, stabilising her faction of Passione, while most others were still reeling from the Bosses death. 

In vast contrast to the withdrawn and aloof teenager she used to be, she rules with true confidence and charisma, emerging from her trial by fire stronger than ever before. Extremely intelligent and able to pull peoples strings with a smile, those who cross her quickly come to regret it, and those who are loyal are rewarded well.

It’s unknown what negotiations happened between her and the new Don, but it is undeniable that her quick thinking and pre existing reputation, not to mention the clear line of succession for her were large incentives to let what was Muros faction remain running mostly the same way it was, with Rametta clearly losing very little at the negotiation table- while many of her and Muros longtime enemies lost everything in the cleanup following the old bosses death and the new Dons ascension and then stabilisation.

Ramettas rein differed surprisingly little from Muros, though she operated even less constrained by the rest of Passione. Regarded by many as the queen of the Napoli underworld during her reign, her reputation is one of overwhelming power, careful management, quick and brutal retaliation, and excellent fashion choices. 

Though early 2000s Naples mafia is not the most accepting of queer men, let alone an out and proud trans woman, her overwhelming stand power and the power of those who swore their undying loyalty to her ensures that she is feared enough for her gender to be respected, even as people curse her out behind closed doors.
