Identity - Mark Tribe

In Mark Tribe’s Defining New Media Art, he mentions the theme of “identity.”

“Race, gender, age, sexual orientation, and nationality can all be invented, undermining the notion that art works are authentic expressions of their makers' identities.”

To me, this theme fuels all art. Everything you create or produce is a piece of you, regardless of your intent. Identity is my favorite theme to express in my work because I can put my best effort into something I am passionate and knowledgable about--myself. 

As a young Pakistani-American Muslim woman living in the United States, I feel as if i can share a lot of my experiences through art since the world today is still reaching toward equality and normal-ness with diversity. My hair is extremely big and curly, which is not a norm for white American or Pakistani women either, so being different remains a quality in both of my identifiable cultures.

Tribe’s article mentions Prema Murthy’s Bindigirl (1999) and I can completely see the meaning of modesty in Indian and Pakistani culture stick out to me--even though that may not have been Murthy’s original intent. Art that can speak to someone else’s identity (not just the artist’s) can tell stories you may never even dream of. Identity is a part of you and it will show, whether you like it or not.
