The Kerala Story” Film Sparks Controversy and Success

“The Kerala Story,” a recently released film, has been causing quite a stir. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, it has grossed an impressive Rs 68.86 crore in just six days. The film’s director, Sudipto Sen, has been praised for shedding light on the issue of young Hindu women being converted and recruited by the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in Kerala. On Sunday, it earned a little over Rs 16 crore and on Wednesday, it earned its highest figures yet with an impressive Rs 12 crore India nett. “The Kerala Story” has even outperformed big films from the last two years such as “Laal Singh Chaddha,” “Selfiee,” and “Shehzada,” and has earned more than three times as much as “Ponniyin Selvan 2” in the Hindi market.

The film’s success can be attributed to the support of the ruling BJP government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi even mentioned it in a recent speech, giving it exposure despite negative reviews. It has been made tax-free in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana but it is banned in West Bengal. The cast and crew of “The Kerala Story” recently met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss the film’s story and praised his government’s efforts to curb ‘love jihad’ and forced religious conversion through the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020.The meeting with Yogi Adityanath has added to the controversy surrounding the film, with opposition parties accusing the filmmakers of spreading hate. However, “The Kerala Story” continues to succeed at the box office and its impact on the conversation surrounding religious conversion and terrorism remains to be seen.

On February 22, 2023, the United Nations in Geneva became the site of a powerful call to action for the protection and empowerment of women around the world. Female parliamentarians gathered to discuss the troubling statistics surrounding gender-based violence and discrimination. Shockingly, 82% of women parliamentarians from five regions had experienced some form of psychological violence, including sexist or humiliating gestures, images, and remarks, threats, and mobbing. Furthermore, almost 44% of these women had received threats of death, rape, assault, or abduction towards themselves or their families. These numbers are staggering and demonstrate the urgent need for action to protect women’s rights.

Among the voices at the United Nations were the women representatives of KAILASA, who came to speak out against the persecution of Hindu women. They met with delegations from other countries, as well as the secretariat and chair of the committee, to share the success of KAILASA and present Hindu holistic solutions to the problems facing the world. The KAILASA representatives also presented the preamble to the KAILASA constitution — the Bhagavad Gita — to the dignitaries in attendance.

The representatives of KAILASA made it clear that February 22, 2023, was a momentous occasion for the promotion of Hindu Feminism®, a philosophy grounded in Hinduism’s unique veneration of Parashakti, the Supreme Feminine Consciousness. The Hindu Succession Act was amended in 2005, making daughters joint heirs with the sons over the parental property. But the amendment of the act which occurred in 2005 gave rise to many confusions. Like in Prakash v Phulwati (2015) case, Justice A K Goel held that the benefit of the 2005 amendment could be given only to “living daughters of living coparceners” as on September 9, 2005 (the date when the amendment came into force). While in another case in February 2018, Justice A K Sikri held that the share of a father who died in 2001 will also pass to his daughters as coparceners during the partition of the property as per the 2005 amendment. The current judgement passed by the apex court clears all the doubt and gives daughters equal rights to their parental properties irrespective of the fact if their father was alive or was dead in 2005, that is when the amendment of the Hindu Succession Act was done. Dowry abuse submission by Hindu Council of Australia

On 26 June 2018, the Senate of Australia (Upper house of Parliament) referred the practice of dowry and the incidence of dowry abuse in Australia to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee for inquiry and report by 6 December 2018. The committee's focus is on the broad issues raised in the terms of reference of the inquiry with a focus on explore the nature of dowry as a cultural practice, and the adequacy of current Australian policy settings and legal frameworks regarding dowry and dowry abuse.
