so would it, as a trans gay man, be ok if I wanted to brandish that symbol? wear it on shirts and stickers on my sketchbooks etc?

Okay, so. 

First, I’m not in the business of giving people permission to use symbols. I’m not, like, the Queer Pope or w/e. 

That said, the questions I would ask myself before wearing/using a symbol as loaded as that one are:

Am I part of the affected community?

Do I understand the history of the symbol well enough that I could explain it to someone in a high-level overview if they asked?

Do I understand the history well enough to be able to defend the use of it to someone who might challenge me on it?

Is the use of that symbol important enough to me to be able to deal with being challenged about it?

Am I aware of how that symbol may land on intersectional parts of my community (in this case, Jewish/Rromany/disabled/other victims of the Holocaust on the one end and on the other, older LGBTQ/queer folks who lived through the worst of the AIDS crisis in the 70s-90s as well as black/Latinx mlm who are still facing the worst of the ongoing crisis) and am I prepared to discuss that with people?

Am I prepared to deal with the fact that while it may be important and positive to me, it may be hurtful and scary to others (see 5)?

I’m not trying to discourage you from using the symbol if it’s important to you - far from it. I am, however, trying to make sure that if you choose to use a symbol like this that is as loaded as the average pistol, that you are fully aware of how it can land on people that you’re carrying that loaded pistol of a symbol around and brandishing it, and that you’re prepared for people’s reactions and have fully-considered what it may mean to people that you’re wearing it about.

an idea: Hamilton redone but without their professional prop guns, instead using cork guns. each cast member only gets 1 for the whole of rehearsals and every show they do, so everyone knows who misplaced their cork gun because they'll be one of the few who have to use finger guns in the professional production of Hamilton written by Lin-Manuel Miranda
