From Cory Mcabee ( Patreon | Website | Bandcamp ) COLLECTIVE ANIMAL NAMES From Cory: Hi my friends, Here are 101 Collective Animal Names. Last week I quickly put together the illustrations and music and then filmed it Thursday morning at a park in Queens. Toward the very end my performance starts to crumble as a group of babies come tumbling around the corner. They made the whole thing work. I hope you like it! -- Putting this on Tumblr since I’m not sure he has much outreach here. This little video side project put a smile on my face today, and I thought it might benefit some of you as well.

THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT (2001), DIR. C. McABEE
In a future where cowboy-esque spacemen run the fringes of the solar system, space pilot Samuel Curtis becomes embroiled in a complicated, planet-hopping  get-rich-quick scheme, all the while being pursued by the psychopathic Professor Hess.
For quite a long time I confused the unassuming title of this picture with that of The Astronaut Farmer, a movie I have no interest at all in seeing. Consequently, it very nearly passed me by. But, since having seen it for the first time, I’ve become a convert to the cause, and maintain this to be one of the most scrappy, funny movies I’ve seen in recent memory, and a rare exception to the old saw that low budget filmmaking produces shoddy, over-reaching results. The acting is great, the songs are great, the grittyness of the production design masterfully disguises (or accents) the use of commonplace objects in unexpected circumstances… what more could one hope for? Certainly, at times the humor verges on the homophobic (or so it seems about half the time I’m watching--other times, I’m not so sure the movie itself isn’t overtly queer relationships) and an early gag seems to veer toward the scatological, but these are small concerns in the face of the larger accomplishments of the movie itself.

Cory McAbee has been sharing his singular space cowboy vision to Sundance Film Festival audiences since 1995 when his band The Billy Nayer Show performed live along with a collection of short films. He attended the 1998 Screenwriters Lab to workshop the screenplay for his first feature The American Astronaut, which went on to premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. In 2004, he presented his serialized film Stingray Sam, and most recently, he attended the 2018 festival with Deep Astronomy and the Romantic Sciences, a live science fiction lecture featuring original music, animation, artwork, and live performance.

Age-old myths and legends come true Ancient prophecies all come to pass All this, and all because of you The girl with the vagina made of glass
I just watched The American Astronaut, an off-beat space musical, directed/written/starring Cory McAbee, and featuring his band’s music, and I’m all over this shit. A must-see and a must-hear!
