The pad of your thumb pressed onto your phone screen, the brightness of it burning your eyes the slightest bit even in the daylight that’s coming in through the living room windows. Your free hand rested on the furry grey head resting on your lap, occasionally going down to rub at the pitbulls short-fur covered tummy, the dog’s breathing even and relaxed and his eyes closed as he seemingly basked in your presence. 

Your phone’s display was showing a web site of some kind, and you were scrolling down on it with pursed lips and furrowed brows. The focused expression directed at the pictures on the website, specifically the fury balls of joy displayed in them.

The door of the house slamming closed echoed loudly and your gaze rose, focus broken and your ears picked up on the sound of footsteps approaching the living room you were in, sitting on the grey L shaped couch in the middle.

“Baby? I’m home” 

You heard your girlfriend call out, a smile immediately growing on your face and soon she was in front of you with a big smile.

“Hey” She chuckled and looked down at Shark in your lap, reaching out to give his belly a rub before leaning forward. Your faces suddenly close to each other, breaths mingling. “I missed ya, pretty” Her voice was like honey as she spoke and you barely could process what she was saying before her lips found yours in a quick and sweet kiss.

When she pulled back, she dropped down next to you on the sofa, her right arm immediately wrapping around your shoulders while the ankle of one of her legs rested on the knee of the other. Her free hand took off her cap and tossed it onto Shark’s head -which obviously wasn’t enough to wake him-. 

“I missed you, too” You finally spoke up, your hand which was not resting on the pitbull dropping your phone and instead moving on Billie’s leg.

She grinned widely and a small giggle came from her. “I bet” She hummed softly and looked down at your discarded phone now slotted between the two of you’s squished thighs. Her left hand picks it up, flipping it swiftly when she realised it was upside-down. Her perfect eyebrows raised the slightest bit as her eyes took in the content of the screen, the bright white colour of the website making her blue eyes brighter.

“What’s this?” She asked curiously, tearing her gaze away from the device to turn her head and look at you.

Your bottom lip was tucked between your teeth for a moment before you smacked your lips and began speaking. “Well… I was just looking at something” Shoulders shrugging nonchalantly, you slowly took off Billie’s hat from Shark’s head, placing it on the sofa on your other side.

Billie’s eyes sparkled with amusement at your short excuse of an explanation and her hand squeezed your shoulder lightly. “Just ‘looking at something’? Come on, baby.” She laughs softly.

You breathe in deeply before exhaling. “Fine” You mumbled and rolled your eyes a little. “I thought… Shark could have some company when we’re not home. So I started looking for some…” Your lips pursed and you shrugged again, suddenly finding your actions ridiculous.

There was a beat of silence before Billie’s melody-like laugh filled the air. “Aw, oh my God, baby that’s so cute” Her arm pulled away from around your shoulders and her hand cupped your jaw gently, the metal of her rings cold on your skin. “You don’t want Shark to be lonely?” She fake pouted at you and a frown took place on your face, embarrassed as you pushed her hand away,

“Shut up. You’re so annoying” You muttered, arms folding over your chest.

Billie laughed again and shook her head. “Come on, you know I was just teasing” She said after her laughter died down, although there was still a hint of amusement in her voice. When you didn’t reply and only continued to frown with a glare she sighed and wrapped her arm around you again, this time around your waist and she pulled you close. 

Her lips became pouty once more and she leaned her face close to yours. “Pleaseee” She muttered, pressing on the last sound of the word. And you had to stifle a grin when her voice shifted from her normal one to her baby voice. “I’m sorry” Her breath was warm against your cheek as she spoke, once more dragging out the end of the word. Then her plump lips pressed onto your cheek. “I think it’s a great idea” Her normal voice was back now and she kissed your cheek once more before her left hand reached out and turned your head to look at her.

Her lips were still pouty when your eyes met and you bit back a smile. “Yeah? Are you sure?” 

Billie’s blue eyes shone with affection and she nodded. “Absolutely, I would love nothing more, babygirl” She grinned, left hand falling onto the small space of your thigh Shark wasn’t lying on. 

Your lips curled into a smile and your head moved up and down. “Fantastic.” You soon grew excited and your hands scrambled to pick up your phone again. “I was looking at the vet’s website, you know, the one like a block away…” You stated, tapping on your phone’s screen.

“M’yeah?”  Billie murmured, eyes on your focused face. Her heart filled with love for you and she couldn't wipe the smitten grin off her face. 

“Mhm!” You nodded eagerly, scrolling on the site again.

“Anyone ya like?” She asked, painfully tearing her eyes away from your face and looking down at your phone in your hands. 

“Yeah! Actually” You nodded with a big smile. “I really like this little one” You tapped the puppy’s picture, then tilted the device more towards Billie. A smile rose to her face and your eyes flickered to her dimpled cheeks for a moment, your heart skipping a beat at the sight before you looked back down at your screen. 

“Ahw, she looks cute” Billie coos gently, eyes scanning over the black fur baby.  Your smile grew at her expression and you nodded.

A couple weeks later and you were jumping out of Billie’s car as soon as she parked in the driveway, excitedly opening the backdoors and laughing when the thick furred puppy just as excitedly jumped out from the seats, her tail wagging fast and her head turning all around in every direction so fast you’re worried she might give herself whiplash of something.

Billie walks up to you and grins down at the small dog. “Oreo” She says excitedly, bending a little and reaching a hand out. She giggled when the Newfoundland puppy licked the tips of her fingers then let out a small bark. 

Your brows raised in surprise and amusement at Billie’s sudden naming. “Oreo?” You held a hand to your mouth as you tried to hold back a laugh. Her head lifted, a big smile still on her face. 

“Yeah!” She nodded and straightened up again, giggling when Oreo jumped around her before she stepped closer to you. “What, you don’t like it?” Her hands reach out and take your hips in them, eyes on yours. Your heart melts at the soft adorable expression on her face and your own hands reached up, resting on her cheeks tenderly.

“No, no, I do” You giggled softly. “It’s very… you” Your thumbs rubbed at the skin on her cheeks and her eyes sparkled brightly. A soft hum came from her then she leaned forward, lips meeting yours tenderly and sweetly. Her hands pulled you close by your hips, she hummed into the kiss and both your hearts beat faster. 

Then her hands let go of your hips and her arms wrapped around your back, palms spread flat on the small of it as your own arms slipped around her neck, the both of you getting lost in the kiss, in the feeling of the other’s body pressed against theirs, the subtle change in mood between you.

Then the moment was broken as Oreo jumped up, the first pair of her legs steadying her small body on one of yours and one of Billie’s legs. A surprisingly loud bark came from her and you both pulled back with a breathless laugh, foreheads pressed against each other. Billie’s lips found yours again in a quick peck before she pulled away completely and looked down at the black dog. 

“What’s up, girl? You wanna meet your brother? Yeah? “ She asked her with a small grin and when the dog barked excitedly your own face brightened with a smile. Billie’s hand took yours in hers and she began walking up to the front door, watching with a laugh slipping past her plump lips as Oreo got ahead of you two, sitting down by the doors. 

A minute later, the doors opened and not even 20 seconds went by before Shark’s running towards you guys is heard. Billie shut the door behind you and took off her jacket, putting it on the hanger before taking yours and doing the same.

Then the pitbull was in front of Oreo, the both of them having a silent stare down and after a couple moments Shark took a step closer to the other dog. Oreo also seemed reluctant and cautious as Shark approached her. But when he bumped the side of her head with his own, she grew confidence and nudged back playfully. The older pup barks loudly and marches.

As the two dogs began to play around, both you and Billie watched with smiles and occasional giggles escaping you. Billie’s arm snaked around your waist and she pulled you closer. Your right arm circled her torso and the other her front. She hummed softly, pressing her lips against the side of your head gently. Warmth and affection flooded both your bodies and in that very moment everything felt so happy, so easy.

And that’s how life with Billie always had been, always will be. And now with your new little family member it might be just the tiniest bit more chaotic, but you liked it that way. This was your life, and you wouldn’t want it any other way.

im still really annoyed with Retraction Watch for platforming a terf last year and then not doing any sort of sockpuppet damage control in the comments. since they got acquired by crossref they've done way less guest editorials. not to be all "stick to sports!" but stick to sports, retraction watch.

they did introduce me to this substack series i will be following with great interest about the rise and fall of hindawi. wiley acquired a paper mill a few years back, bc they seemingly did zero diligence, and then blithely ignored the problem for two years before being forced to do the single largest retraction of papers in scientific publishing history, somewhere above ten thousand articles because it is STILL ONGOING.

i do love following various retractions bc i like seeing what finally made someone go "wait a minute", and, as i have just written in a cover letter, "I studied astronomy and have held several data jobs because I’m fascinated with how and why systems work and fail..."

my best friend has decided while i'm at her home in the evenings eating her food and bothering her children (for my mental health, it is very important i am fed tiny bits of mushed up banana by hand by her one-year-old), our new project is watching all the xmen movies. i have no particular desire to do this or special affinity for the xmen, and i would like to keep eating very good texmex and bothering her children (for my mental health, it is very important i play hot wheels with the five-year-old). this sounds so super bitchy of me but it's hard to convey that these are essentially on for background noise.

saw the first two. the two things i know about them are that hugh jackman is in them and they're at the statue of liberty in one

an ideologically baffling little environmental game free in the epic store this week, LumberJack. this is on PC and Switch for $13, which is far more money than the playtime anyone can get out of this game. tiny tiny tiny little Spain-headquartered studio without an active website, it looks like one guy hired out to make this and two more games and then went back to single-dev projects. i can respect that!

steam reviewers are mad at this game for being woke, and i'm mad at it for being woke in a very strange way. your one mechanic, as a bear, is swinging a big axe to remove cars and trailer offices and portapotties and various garbage from the landscape.

i wish the movement and look controls are inverted, and i wish they weren't, or at least had an option to make them normal. i know Why this isn't a mobile game (can't monetize something with twoish hours of gameplay and twenty levels) but it's a very straightforward and simple game that would translate very well to mobile. much like donut county.

now for being picky about the political mindset of the developers: as much fun as it is to be a bear swinging an axe around, lumberjacks are not the people i associate with wild preservation movements.

saving the land and turning it back into pristine and perfect land for wild animals in this game looks like erasing every hint of human activity from a site and turning it into sheer recreational use. many levels are heavily polluted, but some can definitely be read as recycling centers. im confused by the erasing every hint of humans in early levels, and then this level where you break down a radio station, slap the host with your axe, and she turns into a park ranger who starts gardening and taking care of chickens?

i don't think that removing all the traces of people from the landscape will magically fix everything, nor do i think simply being in unspoiled wilderness will magically fix me.

there's a golfing level where you whack bombs into various small buildings. i think golfing to save the environment is a strange choice to make for designing a game.

i also briefly thought this bird in every level was an extinct ivory-billed woodpecker, which was a little alarming bc there are some real nutjobs out there with very strong beliefs about this bird and government overreach and how much the government is lying to you about the extinctness of various animals.

i stopped playing about halfway through bc i was not having fun and found the underlying environmental message a little confused. they've managed to sell at least 10k units which is...not very good. i am not surprised this is free on epic, and i wonder what their payout for that was. would not be surprised if they negotiated a payment to their nonprofit partner ecologi as part of that.

Ren knawed on his thumbnail as Kevin and Hassan from coding class talked through the upcoming project; a collaborative website build on a topic of your group's choosing. 

Their eyes would occasionally go up while they were talking, to see if he would comment on their discussion or get involved with the conversation, but they would quickly go down again when they saw him looking off, pretending he was somewhere else altogether.

Though, he wasn't somewhere else entirely. 

Just on the other side of the room.

She was looking right back at him, idly twirling a strand of her light blonde hair (her pink streaks were fading and were now a pretty cotton candy hue that he liked more than the bright pink but wouldn’t tell her) around her finger, a slight smile on her lacquered lips. 

She was dressed in pink and white, as usual, accessorising with a black waistcoat and black legwarmers. Her nails were stiletto sharp and Kuromi-themed this week, and it made his mouth water.

Even if they’d been forced to split for this class, they'd already agreed to work together on the project, building a website for her eventual cat cafe game (that still didn’t have a name, but that was okay, he said, they’d come up with one together). 

He didn’t have an eye for web design, so she was taking the lead on it. She was a much better coder than he was, in almost all respects, but she never made him feel bad about it. If anything, she liked any opportunity to help him, to speak on both their behalf, to take the lead where she needed to.

He might have been in love, but he wouldn’t tell her that either.

She raised her brow when he lowered his eyes to the desk, looking at the time on his phone; are you okay, the little gesture asked.

He smiled and shrugged, before putting his hands together and pressing them to his ‘ear’, miming a pillow; tired, he told her, adding a mimed snore with it.

She giggled (covering her mouth with her fingers like a girl in an anime) and shook her head, looking towards her group mates for a moment (who all looked about as disengaged as she was).

She then smiled a little wider (a cattish smile, he might have associated it with someone at some point) and motioned downwards. 

When he looked down, seeing her normal skirts and stockings, he watched as she parted her knees, showing off just how high her stockings climbed up and a peek of skimpy black panty amidst all the pink and white ruffles.

Ren's jaw instantly clenched and his eyes widened, just enough for her to notice and her cattish smile to grow even bigger.

Naturally (despite wanting to do better than he had before), he'd indulgently included a few cosplay outfits and plenty of fetish pieces with the clothes she’d asked for (and paid for, which he’d sent right back to her), hoping to encourage her to take some risks when they were in class together, which, clearly, she'd done happily.

You were sleeping silently in the bed with the Haitani brothers on both side of you. They sandwitched you between them after a long, tiring day. You were restless the whole day. Paperwork kept you up until late night, so it was nice having the boys with you.

Or so you tought. If the nightmares you've been having for a month now wouldn't ruined it. You tensed up unconscliously and started sweating a little. Ran was the first to wake up after feeling you shift in your sleep. It was strange, because you were a pretty still sleeper.

Then you started mumbling and your breath was getting uneven, startling the black haired male beside you. He sat up and looked over to his brother who also woke up just now, due to you shaking off his hand from your waist by accident.

Rindou sat up too, meeting eyes to eyes with Ran. The blonde looked confused on why you were acting this way. They both frown as you shut your eyes tighter, lips stuttering as tears form in the corner of your eyes.

You were on top of a building. Looking around, admiring the beautiful sight of the sky, you stepped one more step toward the edge. The memories of yesterday flashed trough your mind. The pool.. The people staring at you.. The freezing cold water touching your skin.. The laughing that echoes trough your mind since then.. And the feeling of finally letting go...

That's when you met their eyes. Down there, in the bottom of the building that was surrounded by a big crowd of people, minding their own business. They were just standing right there, in the middle of the rushing mass. Looking at you with no emotion in their faces. That's when it hit you.

'Right, they couldn't care less, could they?' Tears now running down your cheeks, but you smiled trough them. 'Weak.' You didn't hear it, but you knew what had left the blondette's mouth. You knew them too well. 'I wonder, -you said- if they knew what they said would go straight to my head, would they do it again?'

There you are, taking the last step over the edge, falling into the nothing beneath you. Their voice barely reaching your ears trough the white noise filling your ears. Time slows down around you, giving the chance of feeling the world one last time. 'Haitani brothers..' , a sudden tought flashes trough your mind, but gone as fast as it came. You hear your screams of agony as you make impact with the ground, covered in hard concrete. 'It hurts like hell, but soon it will be over' you think.

And it is over, in fact.

The brothers are now terrified. You did told them about the nightmares that have been haunting you in your sleep. You sure did, but they didn't know what to do right now. You were sweating and trembling while crying hard. And for the worst: you weren't waking up.

They tried waking you up by calling your name, shaking your shoulders, even wet your face with cold water but you just kept whimpering. Rindou hated to see you like this, but he couldn't do anything at the same time. He just laid back down, head on your stomach. With Ran, he was going crazy. It made him mad that he was helpless. But he couldn't do anything either, so he just laid beside you, wrapping his hands around your belly.

You always were there for them if they needed. Being their s/o, it was natural thing to do. And now here they are, puzzled on what they should do. You've been like this for over than 2 hours. As the worst, they were getting tired. It was 3 in the morning and it wasn't weekend anymore.

Suddenly you jolted awake, eyes wide sitting up straight. You did it too fast, your head feels dizzy and you have a terrible headache. For a moment, the Haitanis didn't even know to react at your sudden awakening. Both of them sat up too, fast as lighting, hugging you from both sides.

You calmed yourself down, looking at them. Dark circles under their eyes from worrying too much and not getting enough sleep. You felt guilty, ruining their handsome faces. (For your defense, you were tired too.)

Smiling slightly, you murmur an "It's okay now" and rest your hands against their back, rubbing circles with them.

-We tought you wouldn't wake up..

Rindou said with worry in his tone.

-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you guys too much..

-Why are you apologizing? We should be sorry for being unable to wake y' up from that hell.

It was Ran's turn to speak.

-No, no... You can't do anything when I'm in such state. All you can do is wait for it to end.

-If you say so...

Both of them pulled you back down under the covers. Ran kissed your neck while nuzzling closer to you from behind, hands moving to your waist. Rindou kissed your lips, laying in front of you, pulling you to his chest in a warm embrace. Looking up at him, you kissed him back, melting into the touch that both of the guys gave you.

After this, due to the comfort and tiredness all the three of you immediately fell asleep.

Since two of the guys had become dads in recent years, VoicePlay decided that the spring of 2018 was finally time to record their toe-tapping version of this Johnny Cash classic. They all brought in family members to celebrate with them, and released the video just in time for Father's Day.

Trivia:

This song had been a part of VoicePlay's repertoire since their 4:2:Five days. They first started performing it in 2006, and there are clips from as far back as their 2009 promo reel with Ryan and Danny.

They had originally planned to film this video the year before, but it was delayed by the fact that Geoff's son arrived three weeks earlier than the projected due date. Rather than dragging two sleep-deprived parents and their newborn into the woods, the group simply stuck it in their pockets until the next Father's Day.

Their social media posts leading up to the video's release caught the eyes of their buddies from Home Free.

That corn snake the guys encountered while they were recording the hay bale sequence was a sizeable specimen, but luckily they're not venomous.

This video was filmed at Big Oaks Ranch in Chuluoata, FL. VoicePlay returned to the same location for their "Billie Eilish in 3 Minutes" video a little over a year later.

Geoff later used other parts of the property for his "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Man of Constant Sorrow" solo videos.

Layne and Tony also used the woods on the ranch for a Villains Lair two-part episode in 2024.

Most of the guys were joined by their spouses at the end (and kids for the two dads). Eligible bachelor J.None was joined by his mom, step-dad, and big sister.

The video reached a million views on YouTube in just over a year.

This track was later included on VoicePlay's "Citrus" album, which compiled most of the songs they recorded from 2017-19. Because the individual songs had already been made available digitally, that album is exclusively a physical item that can only be purchased at live shows or through their website.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER IS THE FIRST K-POP GROUP TO HEADLINE LOLLAPALOOZA

Stateside music festivals are finally catching up to the K-pop boom. As Blackpink makes history at Coachella this year as the first K-pop group to headline the massive California festival, another K-pop group will be taking that same honor at Lollapalooza in August.

Tomorrow x Together, the massive five-member group also signed to BTS’ label, BigHit Entertainment, has been announced as the first K-pop group to headline of the Chicago festival’s latest iteration, organizers announced on Tuesday. (BTS’ J-Hope became the first K-pop act to headline the festival last year.) Joining them as headliners is the usual slate of superstar names: Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Odesza, Lana Del Rey, Karol G, and The 1975.

Tomorrow X Together, or TXT, made its first official U.S. festival appearance last year, at Lolla’s 2022 event. It seems the crowd was massive enough to convince organizers to bump them up to headliner status this year — as well as bring another promising K-pop group into the fold: NewJeans. The rookie group, who’s reached surprising heights on the Billboard charts, will perform for the first time in the U.S. at Lolla 2023.

K-pop aside, there’s plenty to get excited about on the festival’s genre-spanning roster of acts scheduled to play the four-day event including: Fred again.., Maggie Rogers, Diplo, Rina Sawayama, Sabrina Carpenter, Lil Yachty, and many more (approximately 170 more).

Registration to access the SMS Presale is open now. The SMS Presale kicks off Thursday, March 23 at 10 a.m. CST at Lollapalooza’s website. Four-day GA passes will start at $365. Any remaining passes not purchased during the pre-sale will be available in a public on-sale to follow. Single-day passes will go on-sale at a later date.
