Oscars 2024 & political issues
I get cheesy about the Oscars.
At its best, this is a celebration of humanity, of people sharing their artistic vision with the world, of creating from the heart of what they care about, of reflecting social and ethical crises through the medium of movies, be they documentary, historical fiction, or fantasy.
--In the monologue, Jimmy Kimmel offered support and solidarity to the members of IATSE, the union representing many crew members, which is currently in contract negotiations that are expected to be difficult. IATSE was a key ally to the writers and actors during their 2023 strikes.
--The In Memoriam segment began with a clip from last year's winning documentary "Nalavny" - "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for the good people to do nothing."
--Osage Nation member & songwriter Scott George says about their performance "We're hoping you see us as a people that have survived and that are able to hold on to what we have."
--Cillian Murphy dedicated his Oppenheimer Oscar to "the peacemakers everywhere."
--Nimona director Troy Quane wore a Protect Trans Kids pin.
--Oscar speeches don't often open with the words, "I wish I'd never made this film." Mstyslav Chrernov accepted Ukraine's first ever Oscar and closed his speech with the words "Slava Ukraini - Glory to Ukraine."
--Zone of Interest filmmaker Jonathan Glazer's speech reflected themes from his movie: "All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, Not to say 'look what they did then'; rather, 'look what we do now.' Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.
Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and a Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October the seventh in Israel, or the ongoing attack on Gaza. How do we resist?"
--attendees from Mark Ruffalo to Billie Eillish to Ava DuVernay wore a red&black pin to show their support for a ceasefire in Gaza
--protestors calling for an immediate ceasefire closed a major intersection and blocked traffic near the Dolby Theatre, delaying the award show — and forcing an acknowledgment of the issues the protest centered on.

People always wanna get mad when older people harp on the younger generations for not knowing old shit but like
Idk man I think if you say you have an interest in a particular topic you should know the history of it and the influences
You should also just be curious about the past in general like the world did not start when you were born

It's Go Time!
Happy Oscars! Or as I’ve come to think of it – Election Day and Gay Super Bowl Sunday all rolled into one very  irresistibly watchable, and sometimes unwatchable, (Note: The balance depends on the year) feast and famine evening of pop culture gods and goddesses…as well as any other gender non-confirming deities. I’m already weeping The big question this year is — If 81-year-old Joe Biden can…

Omar Apollo's 'God Said No': A Bold New Chapter in Music and Style
Tumblr media
Omar Apollo's latest album, ‘God Said No,’ released through Warner Records, marks a significant evolution in his musical journey. With executive producer Teo Halm by his side, this album arrives a little over two years after his critically acclaimed debut, "Ivory." Leading up to the album's release, Apollo teased fans with singles like “Spite,” “Less Of You,” and “Dispose of Me,” the latter of which he performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. "God Said No" features notable collaborations, including musician Mustafa on “Plane Trees” and actor Pedro Pascal on a spoken-word piece aptly titled “Pedro.” The album's title reflects Apollo’s take on the phrase “lo que sera, sera” (whatever will be, will be), encapsulating a humorous yet poignant outlook on life's inevitable ups and downs. In conjunction with the album, Apollo will launch the God Said No North American tour on August 20th in Indiana. The 29-date tour will see him perform in cities such as New York, Boston, Toronto, and Houston, culminating in shows at iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre and The Hollywood Bowl. The tour will feature support from Kevin Abstract, Malcolm Todd, and Ravyn Lenae on select dates. The creation of "God Said No" began after the whirlwind success of his debut and the intense touring that followed, including supporting SZA and Billie Eilish. Apollo spent three reflective months in London, drawing inspiration from poets like Mary Oliver and Ocean Vuong and musical icons like Kate Bush and Beyoncé. In the hallowed halls of Abbey Road Studios, with producers Halm, Blake Slatkin, and Carter Lang, Apollo crafted a deeply personal and emotionally charged album, shaped by the aftermath of a tumultuous love affair. Apollo's debut album "Ivory" in 2022 was celebrated for its genre-blending and multilingual approach, earning him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and commercial success with hits like "Evergreen (You Didn't Deserve Me At All)." His acclaim extended to year-end lists from NPR, Billboard, and Rolling Stone, and performances on NPR's Tiny Desk and Jimmy Kimmel Live! He also became a prominent figure in fashion, serving as the first ambassador for Youth to the People and fronting LOEWE’s menswear campaign. His recent Met Gala debut in a custom LOEWE suit garnered widespread praise, cementing his status as a multifaceted artist and style icon. Read the full article

10 Best Moments From Oscars 2024
Tumblr media
The much-awaited Oscars red carpet finally rolled out on March 11th, 2024, and like every year, it was a blend of unforgettable moments. From heartwarming wins and powerful speeches to unexpected appearances and playful tributes, this year's ceremony had something for everyone. Whether you're a die-hard cinephile or simply enjoy the spectacle of award season, the Oscars never disappoint. Let's dive into the top 10 moments that are sure to be etched in Oscar history, from emotional acceptance speeches to show-stopping musical numbers and surprise celebrity appearances. Here are the top 10 moments that will go down in Oscar History.  1. Emma Stone Celebrates Her Win Having become fast friends during award season, Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone shared a heartfelt moment, as the former bagged the Oscar for Best Actress for Poor Things. Emma Stone dedicated the win to all fellow nominees and even gave a shout-out to Gladstone during her acceptance speech.  2. A Kentastic Pink Performance Ryan Gosling’s all-pink I’m Just Ken performance was another highlight of the Oscars evening. Serenading co-stars, dancing and grooving on a pink staircase and the backup dancers’ getup reminded us of Marilyn Monroe’s performance in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). 3. Jonathan Glazer Stands Up for Humanity Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest secured the Oscar for Best International Feature and he made Gaza the center of his acceptance speech, shedding light on the ongoing dehumanization.  4. Barbenheimer’s Playful Reprise Barbenheimer's Playful Reprise offered a lighthearted interlude during the ceremony. The details remain under wraps, but it included a surprise performance and audience participation, leaving everyone with a smile. 5. Robert Downey Jr. Celebrates 1st Oscar Win Robert Downey Jr, in his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer, thanked his “terrible childhood”, the Academy, and his loving wife, saying “You have loved me back to life”. Now that's how to honor your support system on the Oscar stage! 6. Billie Eilish was Made to Shine The sibling duo, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell won their second collective Oscar for Barbie’s emotionally charged ballad What Was I Made For? This win makes them the youngest artists to secure two Academy Awards.  7. Who Let the Dog Out?  Amidst no-show rumors and Jimmy Kimmel’s prologue, Messi’s chances of showing up were slim. However, the Anatomy of a Fall star made an appearance shortly after. Looking equal parts adorable and handsome, the black-and-white, four-legged celebrity was sporting a bowtie in a sea of celebrities.  8. Donald Trump in the Spotlight Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the Oscars, didn’t let Donald Trump’s mean post get under his skin. He playfully brushed it off, by addressing Trump rather directly and said “Isn't it past your jail time” for the review on Truth Social. 9. John Cena Makes a Bare Appearance John Cena made a rather dramatic appearance when presenting the Best Costume Design award, sporting nothing but an awards card and the sheer mass of muscles on display. He clearly emphasized the importance of costumes. 10. Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s “I Made It” Moment The first award of the night was given to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Best Supporting Actress in The Holdovers. She thanked God and the Academy for believing in herself, amidst tearing up and sharing her back story.  The 96th Academy Awards were brimming with applause, happy tears, and bizarrely entertaining moments. And that brings us to a satisfying (almost) end of the award season! Read the full article

The Oscar Goes To...
The Oscars were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and let me tell you they were great. Most years the Oscars are ho hum but, this year I saw it with some company and they made the Oscars fun. Jimmy Kimmel did an awesome job of hosting. His jokes were on point even the one he made about the envelops being switched and that “Poor Things” won for best movie. The performances were awesome. Billie Eilish…
