he stands half-shrouded in the shadow of the doorway, wincing at each sour note. they're still as prominent as the first time, but there's something endearing about it now, how frank plays on despite the mistakes, almost as if it doesn't matter if he improves. it isn't until the notes soften to the song's end that he steps forward, hesitant, feet whisper-soft against the floor, bill stopping half a foot from the bench— the hesitation is deep-seated still, though, gradually, inches have been sheared from the distance.
“i have cassettes and records, you know,” he starts, breaking the silence. “instead of you butcherin' linda every day.” it's gruff, of course, but warm, too, an edge of amusement cutting into his tone, because it's not really that bad— and he seems so happy.
bill hesitates, then takes the final step forward, sitting beside frank, squinting as he glances at the music sheet, studying the notes (to avoid looking at frank.)
“or you could… start with something a lil' more basic. i could give you some, uh… tips.” / @doomdays
this may or may not be obvious but like. thinking about how the pills had to have been from joel/tess. how bill probably requested some medications specifically for frank so on some level they had to have known what was going on and where things were headed..
frank saying bill is a paranoid schizophrenic is a... questionable joke ofc. i understand it stigmatizes mental illness and psychotic disorders especially shouldn't be weaponized for laughs but i also look at it through the context of the world ended in 2003 in the show & these kinds of conversations just... weren't happening in the mainstream culture. (that doesn't fully absolve the writers, of course, but i just think it's very natural dialogue that's ic/works for the characters, plus frank isn't really being mean, he loves bill too much for that, so i don't personally take issue with it.) bill clarifies he's not schizophrenic, but doesn't deny being paranoid, and i think that's an interesting detail. bill definitely has a lot of things going on mentally, of course, though i don't think he'd ever been diagnosed with anything/ever involved himself with anything re: mental health, but he is very aware of it, even moreso after beginning his relationship with frank and allowing himself to explore more of himself and really understand the things he's gone through and how they've affected him. i haven't defined it yet because i don't really know what he suffers from, but he does have some sort of psychotic disorder, suffering from extreme paranoia & maybe even delusions. (i'll figure out more about this eventually).
