I saw someone questioning what would happen if caffeine was injected directly into the veins. A story started to form in my mind and after doing some research and with Halloween not too far this came together. Hope you all like it!
The Caffeine Experiment
Melinda sat nervously in the chair, toying with her black curly hair. She hated doing medical things when they had to be done out of necessity as it was, doing it on her free time on a weekend wasn’t any better. If anything it was worse. But she needed the money, sure she made a decent living as a cosmetologist, but they were just getting by, it wasn’t enough to cover mom’s medical bills. This add she came across said they were looking for someone in their 20-30s, over all in good health, and had no issues with caffeine consumption. With the money they offered, she could pay all of mom’s hospital bills and more. Plus this was a legitimate legal way of getting extra money, hard to argue with that.
“Melinda Curtis,” a brunette women in a well dressed suit called from behind the door. Melinda got up and hurried into the office. The women handed Melinda a clipboard and a pen. “Before we can go further I need you to read and sign this. It says you know you’re parts of a Phase One drug trial and that there are risks. The ones listed on here are ones we know about so far. It’s up to you to follow up with your primary care physician and tell them you participated in this study…”the secretary ran on and on about the legal implications of taking part and everything.
“When do I get paid,” Melinda asked. “First the doctor does a basic health assessment. If all goes well, you’ll go through with the test. Once the test is over you can expect a payment sent within three to five business days.” Melinda shifted nervously, this seemed almost too good to be true. “If you don’t meet our requirements, we’ll compensate you for your time and keep you in our file for other studies.” Melinda could sense impatience from the woman, so she grabbed the clipboard and signed in all the necessary places.
Next, Melinda was lead into another room. Half of it was an office, with a nice looking desk and chair with a desktop computer. The other half had an exam table and a tray holding various other medical instruments. Two men were standing in the room wearing nice clothes under white coats. The first one had black hair with flecks of grey and some wrinkles to his face and dark colored eyes. The other man was younger, almost looked something like a model or a potential bodybuilder, with red hair and green eyes. “Thank you Juliette, you may go for the evening,” the older man said. The woman left and soon it was Melinda and the two gentlemen in the room. “Hello. I am Dr. Blackwell,” the older gentleman said. He then gestured towards the younger man.“And this is Dr. Masen. He will be assisting me today.” Dr Masen gave a pleasant smile. “Hello.” “Now if you can just take off your coat and hop up onto the exam table. I want to get started right away.” “No health question?” “I’ll ask as I go along. Dr. Masen will write everything down.” Dr. Masen had a clipboard and pen in hand. With out a second thought Melinda did as she was told.
First it was the usual. Height, weight, any known health problems, family history. The first few minutes were the sound of her talking and the pen writing on paper. Next the doctor took her temperature and pulse at the same time. “Temperature normal, pulse a little fast, but regular. Nervous are we?” Melinda bit down on her lip, feeling a blush creeping across her face. “Don’t fret my dear, you’re doing very well. You’re a very healthy young lady.” Dr. Blackwell started wrapping a blood pressure cuff around her arm. It’s was a quick squeeze and then released. “Blood pressure within normal range.” The next thing he did was take the stethoscope from around his neck and place the ear pieces before placing the disc to her chest. “Breathe in and out dear.” Melinda did as she was told. He asked her to do the same thing a couple more times as he moves the disc around her back and chest before having it rest at her heart, breathing normally again. He took what seemed like an unusually long time listing. He also moves the disc around, going under her v neck shirt with a look of desire in his eye. Melinda felt her heart start racing the more he was listening. “Is there anything else you needed to know, doctor.” “Yes, how much caffeine do you consume on average?” “About two to three cups a coffee a day.” “Exercise regularly?” “I ride my bike every. It helps save on gas.” “Well everything looks good, you’re just what we’re looking for.” Melinda wanted to jump up and down. She got through the worst part hopefully and now it was easy money. “Thank you so much. So, what happens next, as far as the drug trial I mean.” “Oh you don’t have to do anything my dear, you’re just going to take a nice little nap.” Before Melinda could comprehend anything, she felt a sharp pain in her neck and before she could scream and intense heat spread through out her body. As she collapsed to the floor, she saw Dr. Manson standing over her with a syringe in his hand and a smirk on his face. Soon everything started to go dark and the two voices we’re getting farther and farther away.
The first thing Melinda was aware of when she woke up was that it was cold. She went to try and wrap her arms around herself but she couldn’t. She slowly opened her eyes and saw she was in a dimly lit room. “Oh your finally awake.” She turn over and saw the two doctors from before. They were now wearing black scrubs under white coats and they were standing next to various metal trays. Soon a blinding light came on over head. After blinking a couple times Melinda saw why she couldn’t move, she was strapped down to a table with her arms stretched to the sides. She looked down at herself and saw she was naked except for the pair of panties she was wearing. She tried to move with little effort, she tried to scream but nothing came out. “Don’t waste your breath,” Dr. Blackwell said. “I’ve injected you with something that will keep you silent for the next couple hours at least, and if you do scream no one will hear you, this room is completely sound proof.” The doctors adjusted the trays and various equipment as Melinda continued to squirm and try to break free of the restraints. “Oh calm down dear. Were not going to hurt you. You need to relax or you’ll only make things worse.” Dr. Blackwell put a hand to her cheek which caused more panic to set it. “I guess I should explain. You see, this drug trial you signed up for is not just a caffeine medication. I want to be the first doctor to find a safe way to get caffeine directly into the bloodstream, with little to no side effects.” Soon she felt something clamp onto her index finger. She looked over and saw a machine that gave off numbers. Dr. Masen came over and started placing leads all over her chest and couple other parts of her body and hooking them up to a machine. “I’ll be recording the sounds your lovely heart is making during this experiment. For several uses.” Dr. Masen started wrapping and automated blood pressure cuff around her arm. What uses? Why didn’t they tell her any of this in the first place? Where they going to kill her when they were done.“Don’t fuss my dear. The sooner we start, the sooner we can finish, and the sooner you leave and be paid. Melinda tried desperately to ask questions but with no success. Soon she saw Dr. Blackwell turn on a camera.
“This is Dr.Blackwell . This is the first use of our new caffeine drug on a human subject. One full shot of this drug is equivalent to four cups of coffee. With me is Dr. Masen, top cardiologist and a specialist in biochemistry.” “Thank you Dr. Blackwell. So far the other tests we’ve done have looked promising. As you’ve said we’re now ready to move on to use in a human subject. Here we have a female, late 20s, average height and weight. Overall good health, generally consumes a fair amount of caffeine.” Melinda got more and more scared. She saw him go to pick something up. She closed her eyes not wanting to see what was going to happen to her. The next thing she felt was an ice cold feeling on her left breast and heard a fast thudding through out the room.
Thump-a-Thump-a-Thump-a-Thump-a-Thump-a-Thump-a
It took a moment for Melinda to realize that sound was that of her own heart beating. The sound matched the pounding she was feeling in her chest. She opened her eyes and saw a microphone with a stethoscope piece attached had been tapped over her left breast, bouncing up and down with each beat. The blood pressure cuff tightened for a moment and then released. “Heart rate and blood pressure elevated.” Dr. Masen started writing down on a clip board. Dr. Blackwell came up and typed a rubber band around her left arm, then started tapping the inside of it.Next he open up a sanitizer wipe. Melinda was terrified of needles. Just the smell of the rubbing alcohol made her heart go even faster. “Don’t like needles do we,” Dr. Blackwell asked before he chuckled. “Don’t fret my dear. It’ll only hurt a moment.” Before she could blink he inserted the needle, shock went through her body and tried desperately to scream only to open her mouth and have nothing come out. The sound her heart was making was almost unexplainable. The way it echoed in the room one might think it was trying to escape from her chest. “There, there.” Dr. Masen came along side her and started stroking her hair. “We’re not going to let anything happen to you. We’ll give you oxygen if needed and if worst case scenario your heart stops or goes out of rhythm we have a defibrillator to shock it back.” Melinda felt horror through out her body. Maybe she should’ve read the fine print before she signed that contract. Then again they probably weren’t counting on that and that’s how she ended up in this mess. Soon an IV was set up and a saline solution was going through. “Starting with 10cc of caffeine supplement.” Dr. Blackwell stated. There was a stinking sensation as the caffeine went into Melinda’s IV. For a second, she didn’t feel anything. Then she felt her chest get tighter, and her heart started to beat faster if that were even possible.
ThumpaThumpaThumpaThumpaThumpaThumpa
Soon she started panting. It almost felt as if she run a full marathon without stopping. “Vitals above normal range. No signs of serious or dangerous effects.” Dr. Blackwell stated as Dr. Masen wrote on a clipboard. After a minute or two, the feeling went away and Melinda relaxed. “Injecting 20 ccs of caffeine supplement.” Soon everything started all over again, only a little more intense ear and lasted a little bit longer. After what felt like a sprint up hill, Melinda felt her body relax a little. “Vitals still elevated but still in good range. This is where it gets dangerous because now the higher we go, the more we increase the chance of sending the test subjects heart into an irregular rhythm or stopping it altogether.”
To be continued…

Who let the dog out? This incarnation of the 80s Grue Crew did, for their 100th episode together and for this year’s Halloween episode. For the occasions, they dip back into the Stephen King well for one of the trio of his films released in 1983: Cujo. Unleash the terror! Despite the puns, this film has a lot going for it. Director Lewis Teague gets powerful performances from Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro that make Cujo a truly terrifying and heartwrenching movie. And then, there’s that rabid giant of a dog! The 80s bunch loves it! Even so, they go oft astray.
At the time of this writing, Cujo is available for streaming from MAX, as well as PPV from multiple sources. It is also available on physical media as Cujo (40th Anniversary Edition) in standard Blu-ray or 4K UHD formats from KL Studio Classics.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Maximum Overdrive (1986). It’s a King doubleheader and a double tap for the latter. Who doesn’t love a Green Goblin-adorned semi-truck?
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

REVIEW: The Day of the Triffids (1951)
REVIEW: The Day of the Triffids (1951)
A Book by John Wyndham The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham is a classic British post-apocalyptic survival novel set in a future where most of the world’s population has been blinded by a meteor shower. The story follows Bill Masen, a young man who has been spared from the blindness due to being hospitalized at the time with his eyes bandaged during the meteor shower (this would later be…

Both novels emphasise the importance of interpersonal relationships, with the conceit that characters are "strong... in [their] happiness and... weak [in their misery", made more powerful by their willingness and freedom to rely upon interpersonal relationships. In Day of the Triffids, the relationships considered important are those between a core group of individuals; in attempting to extend this care to others, Bill and Josella are forced apart by societal expectations of responsibility. Bill in particular becomes profoundly isolated and pessimistic, convinced his actions have "no curative value". In contrast, "the poor prisoner's cry... strengthened [Charles's] sinking heart"; he draws power not only from love of his immediate family group, but also from the societal expectation of responsibility to those he's more distantly connected to. Dickens portrays societal expectations as strengthening dedication to interpersonal relationships, whereas Wyndham portrays them in opposition, with interpersonal relationships allowing escape from societal expectations.

Realization: Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery AU one-shot
This takes place in fourth year so it’s before Afternoon by the Lake and A Midnight Prank
-
“We’re celebrating with Butterbeer tonight!” The current captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team shouted. It was soon followed by a roaring of agreement by all those who surrounded the players.
“You would think that they won the Quidditch cup and the house cup by the way they’re celebrating.” Rowan said near to Emma’s ear.
“Go easy on them Ro, they just won against Slytherin and it puts them in the lead. There is no way that Slytherin is going to make enough points even if they beat Ravenclaw in the game next week, what with the amount of points we currently have because of our last match with Hufflepuff.” Emma smiled as she caught sight of Charlie in the center of the chaos, it was his capturing the snitch that ended the game that had gone on for nearly four hours.
It was quite epic, not to mention one of the longest Quidditch matches that she had ever attended – that included the few professional matches that she had been to.
“Huh.”
Emma looked over to Rowan who was giving her a measuring look. “What?”
“How is it you know all that, yet you’ve never been particularly interested in the houses Quidditch standings before?”
Emma gave Rowan another questioning look, before shrugging her shoulders, “Charlie was telling me about it the other day.” Emma looked back towards where she last saw Charlie only to notice that he was now making his way towards them.
“Hey!” Charlie greeted them, smiling brightly. His hair was windblown, and his face was glistening with sweat and he seemed tired but overall, he was exuding excitement and happiness.
“Hey! Congratulations! You were amazing!” Emma gushed, giving him a quick hug.
“Thanks, Em!” Charlie smiled crookedly, returning the hug. “I’m gonna go get cleaned up but I wanted to invite you – the both of you,” he nodded towards the other fourth year Ravenclaw, “to the party we’re having in the Gryffindor common room. If you want that is.”
“Yeah sure! I’d—we’d love to go.” Emma answered.
“Great! I’ll see you in a little while.” Charlie replied.
Emma watched him walk away, towards the locker rooms before turning back to Rowan.
Rowan who was watching her with raised brows, high on her forehead. She was giving Emma the look that she usually gave her when she didn’t quite know how to tell her something.
“Umm… you do want to go to the party, don’t you? Bill will be there obviously, he’s one of the chasers on the team…”
Rowan shook her head. “I’m just wondering when you’ll realize…” Rowan trailed off.
“Realize what?”
“That you like Charlie.”
“What?” Emma huffed a laugh. “Of course, I like Charlie, everybody does. Well, except for the Slytherins who just lost their chance at winning the Quidditch cup this year.”
“That’s not what I meant Emma. Of course, everybody likes Charlie, but you don’t just… like him.” Rowan tilted her head forward, brows going up once, twice in quick succession.
It took her a minute before what Rowan was saying sunk in.
Emma’s eyebrows rose high on her forehead at the implications.
“No,” Emma vigorously shook her head. “We’re just really good friends. Nothing more.”
Rowan sighed heavily, “I thought you would have figured it out on your own… or at the very least Penny would be the one to talk with you…”
“Wait! Penny-what? How many people… I mean—”
“Aside from me and Penny? Just Tulip, Badeea and Andre.”
“Tulip and Badeea? That’s okay then… they’re our dorm-mates and Andre wouldn’t say anything. I’m pretty sure he would try to help me out…”
“…and Bill…” Rowan added with a grimace and shrug of her shoulders.
“Bill too?” Emma hid her face behind her hands. How embarrassing was that? Emma looked up to Bill and wanted to be just like him, on a career path to becoming a great curse breaker. And how was he going to see her now as someone who had a crush on his little brother? Was she really that bad at keeping her feelings a secret? How could that many people think that? How could she not realize that that many people thought that she had feelings for Charlie?
Emma peaked out from behind her fingers to see Rowan giving her a sympathetic look. “What about our other friends?” at her question, Rowan shook her head.
“No. It’s just the four people I mentioned. It’s not that obvious to other people. Otherwise Merula would probably have teased you about this ages ago.” Rowan tried her best to be upbeat and positive. Instead it caused Emma to groan and shake her head. That’s all she would need – for Merula to tell Charlie—
“What about… what about Charlie? Does he know?” Emma managed to ask haltingly.
“That’s quite tricky to answer…”
“Rowan!” Emma exclaimed before lowering her voice when she noticed other excited Gryffindors looking her way. “Rowan please. Do you know if Charlie knows?”
“Honestly? I don’t think he does. Charlie is so focused on Quidditch and studying everything he can about dragons… I really don’t think he does. In fact, well…”
“What?” Emma questioned urging her best friend to tell her what was going on.
“Oh Emma, I don’t want to upset you or anything. But I overheard Bill and Charlie talking. Apparently, Linda, from our year in Hufflepuff, asked Charlie out but he turned her down because he just wasn’t interested in dating anyone because there was still too much to study about dragons.”
Emma stood still and silent as she took in that information. Charlie probably didn’t know about her feelings… and if he did… well Charlie was too nice to say anything about it. Charlie was too interested in Dragons to care about dating. Which meant ultimately that the he wouldn’t be interested in dating her.
Even if Charlie was going to date someone that didn’t mean he would want to date Emma.
“Emma? Are you okay?” Rowan questioned.
Emma shook her head, “I’m fine. I’m okay.” Emma nodded, running a hand through her hair. Rowan gave her a skeptical look. “I am. It’s better to know about this now. It’ll help me… it’ll help me try to move past my… crush on him.” Emma said decidedly.
Rowan watched Emma carefully, “You know we don’t have to go to the party in the Gryffindor common room.” Rowan offered.
Emma thought about it but ultimately, she shook her head. “No. I want to go. If nothing else, Charlie is one of my best friends and I want to support him and his win.” Emma nodded decisively, hands on her hips.
Rowan smiled, proud of her best friend, “That’s the right attitude to take, Emma!”
Emma smiled back not as bright as her normal smile and retorted, “We should head on up there, you know Gryffindor parties.”
“The lion house’s unofficial name given by the rest of the students is the “party house” and they definitely live up to that every time they have anything to celebrate.” Rowan and Emma both laughed, making their way off the Quidditch pitch and heading back to the castle.
Emma would go to the party and have a good time with her friends, and she would move on from her crush on Charlie. It might take some time, but she was sure that she could do it.
She’d accomplished some pretty impossible feats before.

You've mentioned some fics recently but haven't made a fic rec list in a long time. Could you give us one... please?
Hey! I sure can! Though I gotta warn you. I’ve mostly been reading daredevil fics recently, but I’m sure I can find some Twilight fics I’ve read since reccing last if that’s why you’re here—I also have some Twilight fics that are WIPS that I’m reading when they’re updated of course.
If anyone is interested in any HMC fics I can rec those in the future, but I don’t have time to go looking for those today.
And up first are two that blew me away most recently.
What They Wouldn’t Do by Ashevillain
“Sarah is a secretary at Orion, a shady company previously owned by Wilson Fisk. When Daredevil begins investigation Orion, Sarah accidentally discovers his true identity, and he’s not pleased. Despite her best efforts to avoid him after figuring out who he is, she quickly finds herself on the receiving end of a Daredevil interrogation in a dark Alley. Post S1, slow burn, Matt/OC.”
Fiction T, Romance/Hurt/Comfort, 42 Ch, 492,295 words, WIP.
(Matt’s pretty horrible in the beginning, a little OOC in my opinion but it’s important to the growth of their characters so just stick with it and I promise they get better. Lol)
The Red Thread by Pastafossa
“It's said that every soul is connected to another by a red thread, and that these two souls are destined to meet. The thread, though it may tangle or stretch, will never break. That's not your experience, lucky or unlucky enough as you are to see the strings that bind people together. A red thread is developed and grown, not born, and you've worked hard to weed out any semblance of crimson that might cling to you. You pay your bills, you keep your head down, and you find whatever lost people or items you're hired to sniff out.
Then the Devil of Hell's Kitchen tags along on a job, and your plan falls apart.
Starts prior to Into the Ring, and loosely follows the canon timeline. There will eventually be smut, so enter at your peril.”
Explicit, Matt/OC/Reader, 49 Ch, 353,019 words, WIP.
(I was pretty hesitant to start this one, since insert/reader fics aren’t usually my cup of tea but I promise it’s worth it. Reader has an amazing backstory and power. There is a hide and seek scene that alone makes this fic worth reading. It was equally exciting and hot. LOL)
Undertow by Edwardskhakipants
“Edward Masen has just been adopted by a young couple with a heart for orphaned teens. When he discovers life as the shiny new toy to the even shiner Cullen family may be worse than life as a faceless nobody, he finds comfort in the oddest place: in the dark eyes of a stranger, as deep and mysterious as the ocean itself. Will he find the solace he had been always searching for in this strange, quiet girl, or will he find something greater than he could ever imagine?”
Gen, romance, Edward/Bella, 13 Ch, 51,667 words, WIP.
(Super sweet story! Bella has a fun secret.)
Murdocks Never Quit by Lluvia185 & Pikkulef
“Instead of being killed, Jack Murdock ends up in a coma and he wakes up almost 20 years later.”
Gen, what-if/angst/family drama, 16 ch, 35,900 words, WIP.
(Really love this concept. Fun to watch Jack get to know his son.)
Devils Kindred by Moonlitdaze
“Iris Murdock is finally returning to Hell's Kitchen, her childhood home, after years away. Unfortunately, the city she left behind is home to memories of her father's murder and a brother who thinks she abandoned him. As she struggles to reconcile past, present, and future, her beloved little brother's own inner devils threaten to steer her life on a new, terrifying course.”
Fiction T, Family/Crime, 91,648 words.
(A really fun idea. I love Iris and Matts relationship. I read this a while ago so I can’t really remember any specifics I really liked… I just know I liked it. Lol There are more fics in the series: Devil’s Penance and Devil’s Alliance, that ones still a WIP. )
Vagary Hop by Brandywine421
"Is it true you show your face to kids so they don't get scared?" Sister Maggie asked, conversationally, but not really. Matt knew her well enough by now to tell the difference.
"Oh. A few times, yeah. If they're really scared already, I don't like making it worse. Why?"
"No reason," she lied, steering him for another circuit around the block. Longer coffee break initiated. "Just curious."
(Read this a while ago, can’t remember anything specific but I always love a Maggie and Matt fic)
A Body of Water and Bones by Littlest Cactus
‘"It was a good distinction to make. I wasn't Bella, but for the time being, I could be Isabella." Because time marches on and waking up as Bella Swan is unfortunate, but it's not the end of the world. Only the end of her's. [SI-OC]’
Romance/Drama, Edward/OC, 92,700 words, WIP.
(One of those “OC wakes up in the Twilight universes.” I always get excited when this is updated.)
Some one shots:
Lazarus Open His Eyes by BrownieFox
“Jack Murdocks wakes up in a coffin, six-feet under, very much alive.”
(Do you like torture? Read this! It’s a super fun idea and great start to what could be a fun multi-chap story but it looks like this is all the author plans to do for it. Can you tell this is a trope I love?)
Penny and Dime by Gremlinny
“"You take down druglords and do parkour, Red, but you're tellin me you can't cook?"
"Jeez, why don't you find me a measuring cup that's ADA compliant?"
OR
Frank is helpful and Matt is kinda drunk”

Midnight Sun, Chapter 9 - Port Angeles
Right. I remember this chapter from Twilight. I also have heard quite a bit about this chapter. This is gonna be a ride.
Eddie starts off this chapter saying that he used to be the ‘responsible’ one. I would like to remind everyone that Edward Anthony Masen Cullen spent a few years eating people he percieved to be horrible criminals because he didn’t like animal blood and was being a whiny baby. But go off, Eddie.
SM is still trying to paint Jessica as a rude bitch and I still don’t buy it. It is extremely clear to anyone with eyeballs that Mike has a thing for Bella, and it is pretty obvious that this date he’s going on with Jessica is because Bella said no. So her thoughts come off as insecure. She’s a teenage girl, so I think insecure is a pretty standard thing. Not always, but SM has painted these kids as the stereotypical teens, so.
Basically, I still don’t buy the attempt to make Jessica seem evil.
Bella has wandered off to go get that book she wanted, and Eddie is simply freaking out because he let his daughter out of his sight for one minute and she wandered off. He’s about half a second away from considering getting a leash to put on her. Seriously, though, that’s how this reads. A parent frantic because they lost their child in a crowded store or park. We all know she’s gonna get a serious scolding for this one. Maybe even grounded.
a volly of snarls erupted from my throat
Okay, we’re still not to the big rant about vampire instincts in this universe, yet, but I want you guys to remember this for later. It absolutely aides in the point I plan to make there. Also a ‘volly’ of snarls. That sounds so forced and I genuinely laughed out loud when I read it. Anyway, Eddie has found Bella and she is with the Evil Bad Guys Who Have Ill Intentions.
I would see how he enjoyed the hunt when he was the pray. I would see what he thought of my style of hunting.
Technically a spoiler because it hasn’t happened yet in this book, but not because we’ve seen it in Twilight. Eddie literally does not do anything to this Lanny guy or his friends. He gets out of the car, makes a mean face at them, and then gets back in the car and drives off. Maybe SM has Eddie go back out and hunt them later after he drops Bella off, but that doesn’t fit in with his squeaky clean good boy persona that Daddy Carlisle puts on him, so I doubt it. The scene as we know it comes off as very ‘man, if my girlfriend wasn’t here I’d kick your ass’. Because Eddie is a lot of bloated, puffed up talk.
When SM uses dialogue tags like ‘ordered’ to describe how Eddie says things, it just really hammers home that point I’ve been making about red flags. Even if it’s practical, like him telling Bella to put on a seat belt, especially since Pires bend the will of cars to their inane and idotic physics.
We went on a tangent about one of Eddie’s kills from his Vampire Batman days, and like honestly? I watch a lot of Criminal Minds. I see a lot of this kind of stuff, and it is absolutely awful that people like that exist in the world. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be stopped. HOWEVER, this idea Eddie has that he was playing a good guy by taking justice into his own hands, I don’t jive with that. Now, I am aware of how faulty the criminal justice system is, especially with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. I’ve lived that, myself. But if Eddie is so comfortable taking another life, no matter how he tries to justify it, he is no better than the people who he’s deciding to kill for their crimes.
a highly justifiable murder
See, this. This is why I don’t buy that SM’s Cullens are the paragons of good that she is constantly trying to say they are. There is no such thing as a justifiable murder, no matter what. Solving heinous acts with heinous acts simply perpetuates a cycle of heinous acts.
I wasn’t giving her a chance to say no.
This is a trend that will continue throughout the entire series. I will point you to all of the times that Edward never gave Bella a choice in a matter, including leaving her in New Moon, and DISMANTLING HER CAR ENGINE IN ECLIPSE SO THAT SHE COULDN’T GO SEE HER FRIEND. That one in particular rubs me the wrong way for reasons, but we won’t do that here. Just know that Edward never actually lets Bella make a choice in this series, and even when he pretends to, he does everything in his power to make the outcome go his way.
And now we’re at the restaruant. I’ve heard some stuff about this scene and god, can I not WAIT, but for now, let’s just talk about the one off waitress character. She is clearly only here to be a rival to Bella for this scene. Brief, unimportant, underdeveloped. And honestly? One off characters don’t actually need that development, not really, but what I can’t stand about this one is that she is literally only here, both in this book and in Twilight, so that SM can puff up how clearly Bella is so much better than she is. Because, you see, Eddie doesn’t find the pretty hostess attractive, he only has eyes for Bella. Her entire point is so that Edward can look at Bella, and therefore, the audience as Bella is their SI for this world, and go on about how much better and prettier and more perfect she is than this woman. It’s just gross.
“Do I dazzle you?”
This is still, in my personal opinion, the best and most iconic line in a series full of iconic lines. Eddie the Dazzle Machine. Charming the pants off people when he’s trying to scare the shit out of them. It’s hilarious, and so fuckin’ romance novel cliche, and I love it.
This restaurant is apparently a real place in the real Port Angeles. And from what I understand, at least when the Twilight craze was in full swing back in 2008, they got a lot of extra business and a lot more people ordering the mushroom ravioli. Even put something about Twilight on their menu. Good for them, taking advantage of that free marketing. I have never been to Port Angeles, and am allergic to mushrooms, so I can’t say I’ve experienced the dish, but if any of you have, please let me know if it’s worth the hype.
Its so funny that right now, Eddie is worried about Bella being cold and going into shock, while Bella is over there huffing the fumes off his jacket like it’s a paint can, and he can’t even tell that that’s what she’s doing. The girl is doing everything short of just shoving her whole face in it and inhaling, but he’s too thick to get it.
And here we are folks. The meat and potatoes of this chapter. The big comparison. The reason the cover has a pomegranete on it. Edward Anthony Masen Cullen has the absolute GALL to compare Bella, the boring, walking video game avatar to Persephone. Lets break down Persephone for a second here. There’s a lot to break down, but let’s stick to the basics, for fear that this rant gets wickedly out of hand before I can stop it. Persephone radiates optimism and hope. Persephone is soft, sweet, but has a temper that could kill a man. Persephone is sympathetic. When in the ever loving FUCK has Isabella Swan ever shown any of those characteristics? She is NEVER optimistic about anything. She fucking exists in a constant cloud of negative thought and assuming the worst. She isn’t hopeful about ANYTHING, not even her future with her PRECIOUS Eddie because she’s always questioning his intentions and feelings for her. She is not sympathetic in the slightest, no matter what SM tries to shove down my throat. She treats her friends like shit, she manipulates and lies her way through conversations so she doesn’t have to deal with them, she compares Mike to a FUCKING DOG. Bella is not comparable to Persephone, and it’s fucking beyond ham-fisted, it’s fucking EGREGIOUS to try to make that comparison.
I could see more of an argument for comparing Eddie to Hades, since, ya know, Hades fucking stole Persephone to be his wife and most stories about Hades paint him as kind of a moody, brooding dickbag, but I’m still calling fucking foul on this attempt at comparison, SM. No dice.
Moving on.
Eddie describing Bella’s skin as ‘velvety’ gives me war flashbacks to those grocery store checkout novels with Fabio on the cover that my mom used to read. Eghhh.
So, Bella touches Eddie’s hand and it’s described in a way that gives me very G-rated sex vibes. Which just makes me wanna tell them to get a room because they’re in public right now, and also don’t do that in front of Bella’s salad ravioli.
Eddie is still being super controling and weird about Bella eating, and honestly, I super wish that Bella had had the good sense to get the hell out of there with Jess and Angela. Or that she would have the good sense now to excuse herself, find someone on staff, ask to borrow a phone, and call her dad. Because this guy is literally throwing out every red flag that exists. I know I say this a lot, but if Bella were a normal girl, she would not be charmed by this guy, she would be freaking creeped out and trying to get away from him. He isn’t even subtle about his creep factor or charming enough to play it off.
Edward thinking he has any edge at all is like white bread thinking it’s the right kind of bread for a hamburger.
Anyway, chapter ends with Eddie paying the bill and the pair getting in the car to head home. And the drama chord of the last sentence that’s supposed to play in your head when you read it falls flat. They’re on the way back to Forks and Eddie is chomping at the bit to hear Bella’s latest theory that we know from Twilight isn’t actually a theory so much as she heard a story from Jacob and then did some searching on some shitty Angelfire website. Or Geocities. Either way. And then she just went ahead and had a big old prophetic dream about it.
Next time, we get the awkward car ride home and more. Thanks for hanging around guys. As always, feel free to message me (though, please note to anyone who has sent me anon messages that are rude or angry because I’m making fun of this book, I’m gonna ignore you.), recommend what books I should put on my list for my next recap series, and feel free to buy me a snack using the CashApp tag in my bio.
See you next time, babes.

I paced up and down Charlie's house looking for clues about how I died. I could not remember the last few years of my life, and without those memories, I was surely doomed to an eternity as a ghostly vagabond. I only had a name to go on: Edward Cullen. Unfortunately, I could not remember who this Edward Cullen was, and I had no way to contact him. I had met a boy, another ghost, E. Masen, who was willing to help me if I helped him regain his memories, but neither us really knew where to start.
send me an ask with the first sentence of a fanfic & i’ll write the next five
(or we can cheat and you send me multiple sentences & i’ll write multiple paragraphs... hehe)
I’d never given much thought to how I would die, though now that I had done exactly that, I’d wished I had been more fearful or creative enough to have  considered the possibilities. Maybe then I’d now have some theories to lead me in the right direction. The thought of being dead would have sent a shiver through me, but I was disoriented to realize that the feeling was all wrong. I didn’t have a tangible enough body in which to tremble at the disconcerting truth of what I’d become. The inclination to shake the unsettling feeling had been stuck within me with no relief of release, just as I had been stuck here with hardly any guidance.
A very small part of me felt faintly satisfied that there was an afterlife. I had never been completely confident that there would be. I wasn’t certain of the reason why, but I felt as though the fact that there was had proved me right about some ongoing disagreement on the final destination of our souls.
However, as I meandered through the quaint, old house of my father, I found myself growing more and more distraught. I didn’t mourn my death. I mourned the thought of my poor parents and how the loss of me would affect their lives. My scatter-brained, free spirited mother Renée... this would break her fragile heart. I knew I was missing a significant chunk of time, but from the last of what I could remember, she had recently become prematurely serious with some rookie baseball player named Phill. Although I of course reserved some concern about that relationship, the fact comforted me slightly. At least someone would be there to wipe away her tears and ensure the details of her life were responsibly handled. She required a lot of care, but she was also very strong. I knew she’d survive her grief.
The empty hole of what I had recognized as the place I would expect my heart to be ached when I thought of my dad. Charlie! Could a dead heart break? It seemed as if mine would. I could no longer look at the crinkly-eyed smile of his that made him appear so much younger in the photos framed on the lightly-colored walls. From what I could recall, I hadn’t spent as much time with him as I should have in recent years. Once I had been old enough to protest coming to this drizzly, detestably overcast town for my summers, we spent two weeks vacationing together in California every year instead. Suddenly, I felt very selfish and horribly guilty.
Despite my recollection, it felt as if we’d been closer recently... as if we spent more time together than I could remember... He had lived on his own for so many years, and yet, I worried for him. Something told me that his care for himself was not satisfactory enough for my standards. But like my mother, he was a strong individual. I trusted he could continue his work as Chief of Police, tend to the house, pay the bills, and feed himself. I hoped he could at least boil some spaghetti. My death would not destroy them both.
I drifted up the familiar wooden stairs, longing for the weight of my old body, wishing I could have some influence on the human world. I concentrated very intensely and was pleasantly shocked when I effected a subtle creak in one of the steps. It required a great amount of energy – far more than I would have thought – but I wasn’t entirely without tangibility in this new form. I could live with this.
When I arrived at my old room from my childhood, I expected it to be unchanged. To my surprise, despite the yellowed, scalloped curtains lining the windows and the peaked ceiling, there were differences. A bed had replaced my crib, and there was the addition of a desk. Those changes I expected as they had been made in the recent years of my tainted memory. The inclusions of an ancient, secondhand computer and phone, I didn’t expect. But what I found the most peculiar were the personal touches around the room – a pile of books I loved beside the bed, a stack of CDs I had been given scattered next to an inexpensive CD player on the desk. Piles of papers sat next to the computer, and some shoes I recognized lined the wall against the door. And there were photos – photos taped to the walls of teenagers I hadn’t seen before. I must have been here recently.
Though I was the ghost in the house, I felt frightened.
As I studied the objects decorating the room, I found nothing that provided me with any further hints in my investigation. It seemed I was just unravelling more mysteries, like why were all the plastic CD cases empty of discs? Where did the intricate, wooden dreamcatcher hanging from the headboard come from? When had I last come here and for how long had I stayed?
Just as I was about to give in to my frustration and take a break to go to pieces, I heard another creak in the wooden floor beneath me. I was sure I had been the one to sound the noise, but it hadn’t required any effort to exert the pressure for causation. I held still. I wasn’t entirely convinced of where the inclination came from, but I felt pulled to the floorboards.
There was some bizarre, compelling energy emanating from below the place my feet should be.
I dropped to the warmly-colored wood, and found that my diaphanous form could reach beneath. With strenuous focus, I began to feel I could make contact with a thick, papery-edge. With one last strain of force, I pushed upwards, revealing the materialization of a slightly dusty and weathered but glossy, folded over photo print.
The girl in the picture’s wide eyes were even wider in shock as if she’d been caught off guard, the hint of a pucker between her brows implying maybe she’d been displeased that day. Her face was heart-shaped, her pink lips slightly too full, and her brunette hair long and straight. It was a photo of me, though a few years older.
I traced along the hard edge of the fold with a transpicuous finger, locked on my own eyes in the photo.
Then, I reached for the half that was creased back, pulling the other half of the image into view for examination.
With great astonishment, an electric current shot through me as I realized I recognized the other face in the photo.
It was the face of the other soul I had met, the ghost boy, E. Masen.
