i’m talking jim sitting watching a football match while bill lies with his head in jim’s lap reading peacefully until jim jumps up, cheering at a goal being scored while bill is half-on half-off the sofa glaring at his boyfriend because he was comfy! god dammit!

i want them going to the local pub on a saturday night, sitting in a dimly lit corner and talking deeply with their two pints of beer. the chavs at the bar mocking them for being ‘poofs’ but they just roll their eyes, finish their drinks and leave. on the walk back they hold hands inside jim’s coat pocket. bill’s snuggling up to him in an attempt to stay clear of the chilly evening breeze.

they’d spend lazy mornings together too, especially on a sunday. staying in bed with jim drawing patterns on bill’s shoulder while he’s got his arm round him. bill wouldn’t be able to stay awake properly and though they’ve just woken up, jim would hear his soft snores after only a few minutes cuddling.

Bill had broken out in one of his fits of chauvinism and declared that any price was fair to get one loyal Englishman home: give them everything, only get Jim back.

He wondered idly how they must have looked together then; Bill, the painter, polemicist, and socialite; Jim, the athlete, hanging on his words.

Circus rumours about his [Haydon’s] love-life were not after all so laughable: they said he went both ways.

“Prideaux and Haydon were really very close indeed, you know. I hadn’t realized.”

“But when I told him that it was Jim who’d been shot, he looked at me like a madman. Thought he was going to go for me.”

“Threatened to strip him so bare he’d be the laughingstock of the profession is a hair of Jim Prideaux’s head was hurt.”

  Part of Jim wants to stay the night, but he’s too scared to. Part of Bill wants to beg him not to leave, but he’s also too scared. They’re both young, scared boys who’ve done something they shouldn’t’ve, something that could get them killed, but it’s okay because Bill’s playing with the sparse hairs blossoming on Jim’s chest and Jim’s wishing that this moment wouldn’t end, and that he’d paid more attention, and for this to happen again somehow.

Bill Haydon and Jim Prideaux are so tragic because it was their choices that led them to their fates. 

Yes, circumstance and chance played a part in them, but most of the major events that happened in their lives because of one or the other’s action. It was Bill’s letter to Fanshawe that introduced Jim to the Circus. It was Bill who began to loathe the depowering of the West and decided to work against Britain. It was Bill who had a hand in and fully participated in Karla’s machinations. As much as he felt horror and shock (and possibly, guilt) over what happened to Jim, Bill was not going to go back. He was not going to stop working for Karla, turn himself in, or admit the horrible truth to Jim in a fit of reconciliation and redemption. 

It was also Jim who went through with the Circus interviews and got a position and the training. It was Jim who decided to stand by England for all of his life, even after it cost him his job, his back, and his respect and reputation of his co-workers. It was Jim who knew Testify was going wrong, but refused to abandon the mission and kept going, even in the face of death. And it was Jim who out of mercy, revenge, or a combination of both, snapped Bill’s neck at Sarratt. Jim was never going to turn away from England and join Bill on the Soviet Union’s side, as much as Bill was never going to forfeit his Russian loyalties and come to Jim’s side. 

There are what-ifs. There are possible tweaks that could have occurred, but those would have been delays. Both were destined for the Circus to do great things and serve their country (at first). Both were good at playing the spy game. Both were willing to fight and even die for their causes, personal feelings aside. They could never stay in those glory golden days at Oxford, far away from the world’s affairs.  

Bill may have loved Jim, and Jim may have loved Bill. But it never was enough. No matter what, they were always going to end up like this.

Fall and winter in general, and Yuletide specifically, are very TTSS-y seasons for me, so I was delighted to find a good letter I could write some Bill/Jim smut for, for @etvlamaculotte. This also involves sex while ill (just a cold, but still), a completely new thing for me I just sort of ran with, trying to avoid hitting any “lol snot” pitfalls while still getting that slightly fevered/“oh you poor bab” aesthetic (and also trying to avoid turning either man into completely unrecognizable mush).
