Canon Destiel Timeline Masterpost

I wrote this all in a fugue state while listening to Green Grow the Lilacs on repeat so forgive any mistakes. @gay-fae ask and ye shall receive

So much has happened in the long and storied history of his fandom so I've decided to try to document it. I've started by looking up every time that canon destiel, destiel event, misha collins, jackles, or some other search terms have spiked on Google and cross referenced them with tumblr or twitter posts from that day. I know a lot of this is Misha stuff, but he does tend to be the one to say things

November 5th, 2020: Season 15, Episode 18 "Despair" airs and Castiel declares his love to Dean. The presidential election, Georgia turning blue, the presumed retirement of Vladamir Putin, Dabi from My Hero Academia, Ouran Host Club season 2, Sherlock season 5, the president of Bolivia being attacked with dynamite, ongoing BLM protests, a twitter artist making racist art of Ted Bundy, Hetalia returning, a dead man being elected Representative for North Dakota, V for Vendetta, scientists discovering a "hell" planet that rains rocks and has lava oceans, and half of Europe being in lockdown all became tumblr news around the same time. Some of these are true, some not.

November 8th, 2020: Misha Collins, in a panel with Richard Speight, states that the confession scene was a "declaration of homosexual love", and that when Castiel goes to the Empty, it is an example of the "Kill your gays" trope.

November 19th, 2020: The finale airs and it is not well loved to say the least. The episode is short, Dean dies by falling on a nail to death fighting vampire clowns, and there are several characters left with dangling unresolved plot threads and arcs, including Castiel. The car is in heaven though. There is very little heard from the cast and crew, if anything.

November 22nd, 2020: Misha Collins, in a livestream, tells a fan that Castiel and Jack are remaking heaven together, Cas has his wings back, and they are rainbow-colored. He had, however, mentioned the rainbow wings before.

November 24th, 2020: The Spanish dub of the confession is released and a "rogue" translator has written "Y yo a ti" or "I love you too" as Dean's response. Destiel goes canon in Spanish. Tumblr stops working as a result.

November 25th, 2020: tumblr user @thebloggerbloggerfun claims Jensen Ackles said "I had a member of the film crew record the confession scene on my phone for me" #unsourced #releasethetapes

November 26th, 2020: Misha doesn't appreciate the rogue translator, but walks that opinion back later the same day

November 27th, 2020: A "leaked" Italian dub of the confession scene shows a mutual confession.

November 28th, 2020: President Obama follows a destiel account on Twitter

November 30th, 2020: The supposed "Italian dub" is revealed as a fake created by user @iotiamo using sound clips from other parts of the Italian dub on show.

December 1st, 2020: Twitter user @mothdean says "misha I know you have a stan acc and spy on us so can we have a hazel update please"

December 3rd, 2020: Misha tweets about Hazel snoring and this is taken as possible confirmation of Misha's secret stan account

December 11th, 2020: A script from Cas's perspective leaks. It says "We see Cass's POV of Dean again - his face drawn, drained of hope. But still beautiful. Still Dean Winchester."

December 16th, 2020: Newsweek runs an article about an article that Misha wrote about the Lewinsky affair while interning in the Clinton White House in which Misha comes off as rather thirsty for Bill

December 20th, 2020: All Supernatural related materials disappear off the CW's website due to a copyright dispute with Warner Brothers

December 31st, 2020: Mishapocalypse redux

February 9th, 2021: Spn cast members Chad Lindberg and Samantha Ferris tweet about a party at the Roadhouse and it grows to become a full Destiel wedding

February 16th, 2021: @steveyockey made a fairly benign post about Jensen Ackles. The notes went wild in a variety of ways and started a rumor that Spn writer Steve Yockey was dead

February 20th, 2021: Steve Yockey is not dead and he should say it

March 3rd, 2021: The German dub drops and it is also romantic in tone

March 6-8th, 2021: A virtual con happens where Jensen discusses Chaos Machine and Jared says he wants to be in their next project. They also show that WAP video. Jensen is giving full mountain man preparing to play Soldier Boy.

March 10th, 2021: The French dub is released. Cas says, "I love you, Dean" and Dean now responds, "Don't do this to me, Castiel"

March 13th, 2021: The company Amazon tweets about Castiel and Misha Collins asks if they ship Deancas or Wincest. Subsequently apologizes.

March 16th, 2021: Misha says he can't speak as Castiel because Warner Brothers" specifically forbade it. #cwsniperconfirmed

March 17th, 2021: Sam and Eileen are getting married! I have no idea how this came about but I'm happy for them

March 23rd, 2021: Chad Lindberg and Samantha Ferris claim on Twitter that the Roadhouse party was about Valentine's day and not a wedding. Ferris specifically said that she worked on the show and that people tried to make Dean/Cas into "something that it wasn't", She also stated she doesn't "know what queerbaiting is" and that it was due to an "agenda". This led to #deanisbi trending on Twitter and Tumblr.

March 31st, 2021: Some possibly fake leaked scripts come up for sale on eBay. Also, Jensen is Batman.

April 1st, 2021: Mishapocalypse redux

April 6th, 2021: Leaked scripts from the 2 final episodes pop up and have several mentions of Cas in them that were omitted. Dean even thinks about Cas's confession when confronting Chuck.

April 18th, 2021: Scripts from seasons 12 and 13 leak. These include scenes from after Cas's death

May 17th, 2021: Jensen's band Radio Company releases an album including the song Watching Over Me

June ~5th, 2021: Misha says at a convention that Watching Over Me is about Castiel. Jensen neither confirms nor denies this when asked about it

June 11th, 2021: It is announced that Misha is publishing a book of poetry

June 18th, 2021: The Russian dub airs and Dean's line is changed to "Don't you dare, Cas"

June 24-28th, 2021: Jensen and Daneel Ackles reveal that they are making a Supernatural prequel series following John and Mary Winchester (a story that NOBODY was asking for). Jensen will reprise his role as Dean and will narrate. Misha hints that he would like to be involved, as do Ruthie Connell, Samantha Ferris, Matt Cohen, and Julie McNiven (the perils of having a cast of mostly immortal characters). But Jared Padalecki first says that he is happy for the Ackles's, he later said he was "gutted", then responded to Robbie Thompson's tweet calling him a "coward" and saying "what an awful thing you've done". The next day, Jensen and Jared both do damage control and say they'll always be brothers

July 17th, 2021: People are asking if Destiel will be canon in Space Jam, Misha's poetry book's cover is revealed to lukewarm reviews and people are talking about a particular poem about piss, and Perfume Genius releases an article that is a self-insert vore fanfiction about having sex with Jensen Ackles

August 2nd, 2021: Perfume Genius is at it again with "Last Friday, I had my eyes removed by Jared Padalecki". No, I do not know why she is doing this.

August 9th, 2021: Destiel fics hit 100k on Ao3. Misha tweets his support and people remember that he sometimes reads fanfiction and theorize he has an A03 account

September 1st, 2021: Misha makes his first Tiktok. There is a short intro before he calls cut, walks behind a screen, and strips his clothes off

September 3rd, 2021: Jake Abel uses Michael and Adam to help sell his hot sauce brand

September 4th, 2021: Misha confirms that the love between Castiel and Dean was "reciprocated"

September 9th, 2021: A clip of the real Italian dub of the confession scene goes viral as it is revealed that, unlike the Spanish dub, they change the line to "ti voglio bene" or essentially "I love you like family". September 21st, 2021: Misha drops the fact that one of his poems is from Castiel's perspective.

August 23, 2023: Rogue Spanish translator is revealed to not have gone rogue at all but instead to have followed the script he was given, confirming the existence of a mutual love confession that was cut at some point.

Hard Boiled was directed by John Woo and was released in 1992. The plot of the production is a Police Officer who finds himself in a conflict with gang members that kill his fellow officers. Inspector Tequila Yuen is played by Chow Yun-Fat, and he is the star of the film. I have heard of John Woo before, but I have never heard of his films. Woo is known for introducing the world to a style of action film called “gun-fu” which incorporates heavy gunfights mixed with martial arts. The film is originally spoken in Cantonese and is filmed in Hong Kong. The budget was 4.5 million dollars. The film made 19.7 million dollars after it was released, it only made a little over seventy thousand dollars here in the states. The movie was well received and people who love action films had positive reviews. The film was released in the early 1990s and has a similar feel to 1980s action films. Although the iconic 90s Jazz background music is prevalent in Hard Boiled, making it quintessential 1990s. The film is also known for the stylish flourishes such as slow-motion shots and sweeping camera movements which add to the film's visual impact. Hard Boiled was an enormous influence on the action genre not just in Hong Kong but around the world as well. Hard Boiled continues to be a fan favorite to this day.  

The story of Hard-Boiled follows Inspector Tequila while a fights with a prominent group of triads. Tequila is a dedicated police officer who is determined to take down the leader of the gang that killed his partner. His partner Alan, played by Tony Leung, joins forces to take down the gangs of arms dealers. As the police officers work together, they become close friends and they also befriend a female Assassin along the way. The climax of the movie is when they must fight their way through a bunch of rooms to stop the arms dealers from selling to the terrorists. The relationship between Tequila and Alan is a substantial portion of the film and they form a strong emotional bond. The fighting scenes are loud with lots of gunfire. Woo was not shy with the explosives in this film either. The movie was conventional and had many similarities to conventional Hollywood Action movies. The feel of the movie was like Scarface and had eerie music playing during the dialogue scenes. The acting by Yun-Fat was good, he is a great actor. Some of the action is overexaggerated during the action scenes.  

The film was released in 1992. The first major historical event that occurred was Bill Clinton was elected President. The second historical event in 1992 was when the Cold War was officially declared over. Bill Clinton had a historic presidency, but it was tarnished when he had an affair and was the first president to be impeached. The end of the decades-long Cold War could not be understated. The world’s superpowers were on the brink of destroying each other for 50 years.  

There are many similarities to this film and the Terminator from 1984. The conflict between the people and police officers. The style of dress and the music. The loud explosive action scenes that are long with intense music in the background. The Terminator and Hard Boiled are two iconic films that have left a lasting impact on the action genre. While the gfilms are quite different in terms of plot, characters, themes, and style, they both share a common thread of action and violence. The Terminator deals with this idea of a dystopian future and fate, while Hard Boiled explores the themes of loyalty and betrayal. Both films feature strong lead characters and intense action scenes that have become synonymous with action. I enjoyed watching Hard Boiled and I would watch it again and recommend it to my friends. Anyone who likes action films. The Terminator and Hard Boiled differed in many ways, but both films introduced an intensity that is still seen in action movies today.  

The video is of the “Teahouse Shoutout.” I chose this scene because I found it to epitomize John Woo’s style. I like how loud and explosive it is. The second textual resource is an image of the main protagonist, played by Chow Yun-Fat, and he plays the hero police officer that saves the day. I found that particular still shot with the shotgun favorable because it was like any conventional Hollywood action movie.

anziehen. Die Stiefel drückten, sie waren ihm eindeutig zu klein. Doch

Jelzin ließ sich nichts anmerken. „Es ist mir peinlich“, sagte er zum

Freund George, „dass ich gar nichts zum Verschenken habe. Aber komm doch

zu uns nach Moskau, dann gehen wir zusammen in die Sauna.“ Der Freund

George nickte zustimmend, obwohl er Sauna nicht mochte. Zum Glück musste

er gar nicht hin, Ende des Jahres wurde er abgewählt.

 Bill Clinton kam ins Weiße Haus, er fuhr als offizieller Besuch nach

Moskau und ging an Stelle von Bush mit Jelzin in die Sauna. Jelzin war

hinterm Ural aufgewachsen und wollte Härte zeigen. Wir Russen, sagte er

zum amerikanischen Kollegen, gehen in die Sauna erst, wenn innen drin

100 Grad sind. Bei geringerer Hitze schwitzen wir nicht. Bill Clinton

blickte verständnisvoll. Er ist in der Sauna beinahe erstickt, wollte

aber wegen solcher Kleinigkeiten die neugewonnene Freundschaft nicht

aufs Spiel setzen.

  „Und wenn wir aus der Sauna rauskommen, springen wir in ein Eisloch,

das macht richtig Spaß“ sagte Jelzin. Neben der Sauna war ein

zugefrorener Teich mit glasklarem Wasser. Clinton stand sofort auf, ging

raus und sprang ins Loch. Der Freund Boris wackelte langsam nach

draußen, prüfte die Wassertemperatur mit dem großen Zeh und blieb im

i hate this so much. all these newbies are coming in and making shitposts that spread to fucking newsweek and i would not blame misha if he distanced himself from us. i don't care if he joked about it years ago i think all the memes last night went way too far.

i’ve been taking a bit of a break from fandom these last two weeks but yeah, every time i do come on, there’s old news being dredged back up and it’s kind of funny sometimes, but a lot of it is bringing back old discourse and wank? apparently there is an ageism thing going on where new, younger fans think everybody over a certain age is a pervert??? this is literally one of the oldest fandoms on tumblr. i was a teen when i joined this fandom and now i’m in my mid-twenties. there are a lot of fans here in their 60s. literally all the best fic and art and creations on this site are made by older fans??? wild. 15 years of a show!!! @youngfans this isn’t riverdale lmao

but yeah, as for misha, i think he’ll just find the bill clinton stuff funny, but also, he’s been far more involved with politics lately than before, and seeing an old article where he joked about an old president does not reflect well on him when he’s got ties with the upcoming president. we laughed about obama unfollowing that one destiel twitter account but it sure would not be funny if biden unfollowed misha from instagram. that one would hurt.

it’s nice and refreshing to see new faces in fandom! but everybody should take a moment to reflect before they hit post on whatever they’re thinking about. if it’s old news, it’s not new news and chances are, we’ve already seen it! don’t tweet about cockles to celebrities. rps is for fan eyes only. and don’t ask the cast about stuff they did a decade ago! people grow and learn!

While Zutara is obviously not inherently racist or anything there are zutara interpretations that *are* racist (example: fire lady katara which I can get into) and it does need to be acknowledged that Zuko's status as fire nation royalty does create a power imbalance between him and Katara. Now, this is a conversation that has a lot of nuance to it but it seems like the people harassing you are (1/2)

I did not have that context when sending that first ask and I apologize, since anons harassing you and others are clearly doing it out of bad faith. hey anon I’m finally getting to you after 84 years XD

so first off, I want to be careful about how I approach this because I understand that as a white person (even if my ancestors experienced imperialism) in the US I absolutely benefit from imperialism and don’t want to like, idk, whitesplain XD so if anyone gets annoyed with any way I say anything, just lmk and I’ll rework it. and I also do understand that these are real world issues that are far more consequential than messaging in media (although I do think it’s very important that we challenge messages in media because of media’s influence on our thinking and politics).

but before I talk about zuko and his relationship to fire nation imperialism, and then later fire lady katara and why it isn’t INHERENTLY racist but definitely can be, I want to talk about the atla fandom and how we got here. like, why I assume that most anons who come at zutara shippers are asshats acting in bad faith. if you already know fandom history, skip this section.

1. atla and the fandom has always been kind of shitty and racist

so IDK if everyone is familiar with the history of the ship war in atla fandom, but it’s regarded as one of the nastiest ship wars in fandom history which I agree lol. atla’s creators were some of the first to interact with the fandom the way they did - back then it wasn’t all that common for creators to get into twitter feuds with fans and boundaries were respected more than they are now imo. but for better or worse, and it is a mixed bag, bryke interacted with fandom a lot. certainly at cons but also on social media.

but honestly things really got extra mean in fan spaces when bryke made a “joke” atla season 4 slideshow out of fan art (some of which was really sexual in nature and totally inappropriate) that mocked fans’ creations, but especially zutara fanart and zutara itself. it was pretty tasteless especially considering how most zutara fans were teen girls, and featured some art of sokka saying that if you think zuko and katara would be good together, you’re doomed to have failed relationships. that’s where the whole “dark and mysterious” bs came from, which does describe some zutara fic but not even most of it lol. I actually do respect bryke a lot despite my criticism of them, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over that shit. like even if you hate zutara, even if it’s a joke, we were kids. and they were adults, and the whole thing was nasty.

however, the ship war was chaotic and messy, but it does feel worse now. maybe it’s because back then the fandom was MOSTLY teens and kids, and I don’t think that’s true now. we were all trying to prove our ship was best with like, content from the show and theories and all that, and now it’s like... whose ship is ~problematic lol it’s a show by white us americans appropriating from various cultures impacted negatively by us/british imperialism that they then profited off of, of course it’s racist. that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about that, and in fact many poc have been saying this shit for years - that atla is racist and colorist at many times (guru pathik anyone?) and no one really listened.

if fans are complaining only about zutara, then I’m automatically writing them off as being insincere or ignorant. and since most of these people are anonymous, I have no idea if they are having substantive discourse about colorism in avatar or cultural appropriation (even if it is mostly appreciative). if you are on anon, I have no context about what you actually think except for what you give me. and that definitely is how I view anons in general but especially within the atla fandom because for all 13-ish years I’ve been in it, it’s been messy. that’s why zutara fans have isolated ourselves from the rest of fandom, because the rest of fandom has been really nasty to us. like did we give back some nastiness? absolutely.

but I would hazard a guess that most anti-zutara shippers don’t know about the conversations we have had in this community to make it safer for people of color, conversations that centered poc and woc especially. hey, that’s okay - not to compare zutara to r*ylo because eurgh but like, idk what discourse the r*ylos have about their community. no idea, I don’t go looking for it. and I don’t go to the tags and harass r*ylos - even though they harass the fuck out of everyone else.

2. so zuko and his privilege

undoubtedly zuko as fire lord is in a fairly privileged position LMFAO. but during the show zuko is very clearly exiled - he holds very little political power in the fire nation EXCEPT for during the first season when he is in command of a ship that ozai gave him on a punishment quest lol like yeah he does terrible things and he of all people would not excuse his actions even if he was a traumatized kid, that’s the point of his arc - that he got some exposure to the rest of the world and worked to be better. and the only reason he was exiled at all was because he cares about people - he didn’t question fire nation supremacy at 13, but he sure did question the morality of his people being lead to slaughter.

but after zuko and iroh defect from the fire nation and stop hunting aang, he has next to no power, in any kind of way. like the guy is a political refugee. and yes, he goes back to the fire nation for like five minutes before realizing that he hates everything about fire nation hegemony and that he wants to end his father’s reign of terror, like that isn’t exactly someone who is going to be well esteemed by the powerful elites when he returns and takes the throne.

and I disregard the comics because they suck lol but zuko does have power as the fire lord, but he limits his power. like compared to ozai, phoenix asshole? azula? for the rest of the world, zuko is kind of an ideal leader for a former colonizing/imperialistic nation to have - someone who worked to end that tyranny, who is anti-imperialist, who believes in justice and equality, who wants to make things right for the peoples who his family oppressed.

I do think it is important to talk about power dynamics and imbalances in relationships - for instance, one could argue that mai is at a significant disadvantage in her relationship with zuko. sure she is from a powerful family but not as powerful as zuko’s. sokka? hah forget it. he’s just as disadvantaged as katara is politically speaking. toph? well, she’s definitely not as powerful politically as zuko - her family tried to silence her for years because of her disability. and oh, she’s disabled so it might be ableist for zuko to strike up a relationship with her when they’re both adults. forgetting of course that toph and sokka and katara and suki and mai are not going to be shy about their wants and needs, that these relationships are not likely to be coercive by nature of the show they’re in and the characters they involve. this is not bill clinton with monica creepiness. like, you’d have to write the relationship that way.

the only person who arguably has more political power than zuko is aang. I guess zuko can’t ever be in a relationship with anyone other than aang. and zuko’s family massacred aang’s people so I guess we can’t ship zukaang. now I know you’re not saying that, context matters. power dynamics are important. but you can’t take away the agency of characters - katara, who is essentially a princess, has agency and can choose who she wants to be with. strictly speaking, aang is more powerful than anyone in terms of political power - he’s the avatar - and of course the dynamic is different by nature of aang not being from a line of oppressors, but there still is a power imbalance in their relationship. and I don’t know how many k/ataang shippers have discourse~ on that. not that I really feel like they NEED to, um idk what they talk about lol I’m not in those circles.

3. fire lady katara is in the eye of the beholder

so fire lady katara is not inherently bad or racist, it’s essentially like saying michelle obama shouldn’t have been first lady of the us (now I get that like the obamas being in power didn’t mean black people are not marginalized lol). you can have conversations about whether or not individual versions of fire lady katara are fucked up, and I’m superrrr open to that because I’ve seen it be kinda shitty before. i’m just gonna leave this link to @shewhotellsstories and her post on this.

but often times katara as fire lady is very dominant in global/fire nation/water tribe politics, she’s a game changer ambassador (that is probably the most popular headcanon I see), she holds on to her culture (and many fans have designed her being in her wt colors, zuko is respectful af to her, she and zuko spend extended periods in the swt, etc. like... it just depends on the way it’s written.
