Who counts as a cyclist in London?

“BikeStormz regularly attracts hundreds of young, majority male cyclists – thousands when it comes to its annual central London ride against knife crime. The point of the project is to take kids away from where the blaze – the potential for violence – is hottest, Ferrari-Guy explains at one point in the film. This means physically removing people from hotspots where trouble can occur and bringing them into a community that offers respite and an alternative path forward. On a shoestring, BikeStormz is attempting to plug a gap left by the erosion of social services and spaces for young people. That’s not how the authorities see it, though. 

“Captured on camera is the real-time attempt to criminalise BikeStormz riders by various authorities. In one scene, Ferrari-Guy is shown in a meeting with an unnamed Met police branch discussing complaints made about BikeStormz. A white, middle-aged male officer reels off grievances. The size of BikeStormz rides is creating ‘significant community tensions’, he says. Youngsters on their bikes are ‘intimidating’, and their behaviour ‘bordering on the criminal’. He cites graffiti, littering, and even wheelies as problems. 

“Repeatedly, the officer emphasises the distress BikeStormz is causing to ‘members of the public’. The young cyclists participating in the ride, it’s clearly conveyed, don’t belong to this group. Instead, they threaten it – and wider social order.”

Tag your friend. Yesterday started off a great day got to meet with @writeoffworld for lunch and catch up after I missed another one of his #Bikestormz 😓 hopefully next one I will make it. Mac here is surrounded by some of the youth he brings together to ride together and chill in the city and protects them as if his own. Sadly a group from outside the ones below rolled up and created some madness with sadly a youth being stabbed and another robbed. On the way back we noticed the commotion with @wheelie_kay @nl.kizzy and others running from the park towards us to escape what was happening. Mac managed to get the youth to a safe place and the police arrived quickly and did a amazing job to keep the youth safe with stopping the bleeding calming him down while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The message #bikesupknivesdown needs to ring louder in the community. Hopefully the young man recovers both mentally and physically from his wounds. Tag the riders in the pic and glad all the riders in the image are safe. I aim to investigate now three sport with Bike Stomz being the last and final group to my list.  BikeStormz is a biannual ride-out during which thousands of people from across the country bring central London to a halt as they ride together in protest against violent crime. “It’s about getting the kids together without fighting,” says the event’s co-founder Mac Ferrari, 35. “Together they can put down the knives, just for the day.”.

Though research within the groups there's so many entanglements to both what these club are saying they are using sport to do. It’s placing a interesting direction for my projects as i look at how space influences sport and vise versa. I aim to now look at these three sports and keep to these from now on. Aiming to investigate the deeper levels of investigation.
