When we didn't have a car, we had to cycle everywhere to do everything, including camping and groceries, so I have some lived experience of being a cyclist out of necessity. Problem is, all the "share the road" investments the province had been actively promoting had fuckall civil engineering input and cut the cyclist roads into oblivion randomly when you got to certain places in the city, effectively forcing you to be suddenly treated like a car when there should've been a continuing bike lane if the person who designed it actually biked. When people obey the rules of the road, aka staying in your own lane literally, it's fine. But even when I was a cyclist regularly, I would see other cyclists break the rules, to the point they would cut off right of way cars, used zero hand signals and swerve in and out of the bike lane. Even with my two kids in a stroller, I've had to play gay chicken on the sidewalk with stupid ass cyclists who don't give a shit about their surroundings or doing the bare minimum of having a bikebell to communicate where they are. There's also just no enforcement on cyclist bylaws, which tourism capitalizes on by allowing tourist drunkards to rent bicycles and be absolute morons on the road and on the sidewalk. All this to say it's a pain in the ass for both cars, pedestrians AND other cyclists the way they've set it up. Now I've heard its different in European countries where they've properly made cyclist roads, but this is how it's felt for me living around the Niagara Region/GTA.

Tragically, this shit has gotten so out of hand despite locals voicing their complaints about the erratic cyclist behaviour, a cyclist ran into a pedestrian and killed them recently in my hometown, so unfortunately, I have to say they've earned their ire even if a lot of it I would blame on the government forcing share the road in places it shouldn't be.

I really don't get the cyclist hate like do you guys in the States just behave badly by default or something?

I never had any issue biking in the city nor driving with cyclists around I mean sometimes they slow you down for a moment but so do the lights? Just leave five minutes earlier if you find yourself stressing on the road.
