Do we have a definitive timeline for when Jedi 2.0 fell?

I haven’t read most of the canon books, but is it possible that Han didn’t visit Ben often/at all when he was with Luke? If he hadn’t seen his son for a few years before he turned, it would explain the comment about it being the first time Han had seen him as a grown man. I could see Han being really, really shitty at the whole visiting-the-family thing. (It really isn’t that rare. My dad is a much better dad that Han and he still hasn’t come to the US to visit me since I moved two years ago, and we've already talked about how he won’t be coming this year either.)

Either that or Ben Solo was a really late bloomer and he still looked like a gangly teenager when he was in his early 20s. Which is not totally impossible, but.

I wonder whether Rey has killed before the events of the ST. She seems quite comfortable just mauling the praetorian guards, after all. I’d love to read about Rey’s first kill, why did she do it, how did it change her. I doubt it will ever be explored in canon, but it’s an interesting thought anyway.

Why You Should Read It: Ok, I’ll admit it: I’m weak for gaming AUs. I’m a gamer, my dad is a gamer, my best friends are all gamers, and I dated a guy for four years that studied Videogame Design and was ranked high-tier Diamond on League of Legends. It’s in my blood. Of course I love gaming AUs, the familiar dynamics and language, the vicarious thrill of the game. Enterprisingly’s fic has all the little things that are so much fun about this AU, but doesn’t stop there.

In my opinion, good fics are like Shreks, or like onions (but not like cakes): they have layers. Layers within the characters: in P2W, how Ben Solo interacts in front of a camera, with his team, with Snoke, and with Rey (a relationship whose development acts as a “peeling” process). Layers within the world: the multiple dynamics between characters and in relation to their personal stories. Layers are what make a story rich, and Enterprisingly draws upon them to make a great narrative of one of the funest tropes. 

If you are looking for a good fun time, combined with great character/relationship development and a story that you can’t put down, this is your fic.

 The Patient Light, the Troubled Dark »

Summary: Rey would always be here, and the Light as well. Waiting. They always waited on Ben Solo.

Why You Should Read It: It is stunning how much can someone say in just over two thousand words. The author explores all the complexity of Rey and Ben, both as individuals and within their relationship, while keeping a beautiful tone seeping love and tenderness. I can’t say much more without getting spoilery, but it is perfection.

The fic puts in words TLJ’s characterization of their dynamics, which many people seem to not have understood. Rey humanizes Ben, the nuances of his darkness and compassion, which contrasts with the Resistance’s black and white view on him. Her deep compassion acts as a catalyst for Ben, who is blindly craving the light but cannot reach it by himself. Most importantly, Rey’s love doesn’t entail sacrificing herself or her dignity for that. Somehow, all those factors are effectively represented through little snippets of time. All in two thousand words. Just wow.

Get You Through the Night »

Why You Should Read It: Rey tries to come to terms with losing Ben, trying to reconcile the cruelty of the Supreme Leader with the man who understood her loneliness. Ben seems to be trying to drown the pain train on whiskey. Eventually, they speak. 

Anysia nails the character’s grieving processes, creating a bittersweet picture that follows Rian Johnson’s depiction of their relationship with organic accuracy. It hurts and it heals, and it’s oh so beautiful. Also, extra kudos to the great oneliners. They warmed and broke my heart at the same time.

Why You Should Read It: What if Rey and Ben’s Force Bond had manifested much earlier in their lives? The author draws the story of Ben and Rey through their lives in a way that deepens on their background: the pain of hunger and thirst, the roughness of the desert, the compassion of a scared boy, the betrayal, the love. I love AUs that add to the original content, and reading this oneshot has given me yet another layer of connection and understanding towards these two people who are so connected by their shared loneliness (in particular for Rey, as the story is told from her point of view; the raw honesty about what means to survive in Jakku is powerful). Bonus points for warm, fluffy feels.

Summary: Every girl is entitled to the mistake. That one colossal fuck-up that permanently alters the terrain of who you are. You'll either learn from it or you won't, so might as well have the time of your life.

Rey breathes in the scent of the flowers and the electricity that charges the space between her and Ben, and she decides that this might as well be it.

Why You Should Read It: Oh, flowers. I love when a fic can get me all fluffy and warm inside without sacrificing good writing. diasterisms inverts the tropes and draws a Ben Solo nerding about flowers and clumsily pining over a tattoed, leather jacket-clad Rey. Somehow, it fits and it’s beautiful. Kudos to the beautiful language of flowers, the wonderful coincidences, and Rose making me laugh every time she’s on screen. Just a little story to leave a good taste in your mouth. (Pun not intended. Oh, god.)

Why You Should Read It: Because Mooncactus somehow figures out how to take a bunch of my favorite-but-too-often-shitty tropes and write 30k of goofy goodness. And when I say goodness, I mean goodness. If you are looking for something fluffy but well written, something to light your day without sacrificing quality, this is the perfect fic for you.

Scavenger’s Hoard »

Summary: A Deathless AU.

Rey returns to Jakku for some unfinished business.

Why You Should Read It: In just a few words, the author draws a dark fairytale.There is a somewhat ethereal quality to this fic, something otherworldly stirred with the coarse reality of Jakku. It is deep, it is quiet, it is tense and almost unnerving but still finds a way to end in a right note, with that feeling of “yes, this is it, this is right”. (The last paragraph of the fic is probably my favorite.) This is probably the closest thing I’ve read to a Dark Rey, and I still loved it. Good job to the author for bypassing my Nope with their great writing.

This oneshot is “heavily influenced by Deathless and the Koschei the Deathless folktale”. I have read it once without knowing anything about the tale, and once after doing a little bit of research. I think that the fic makes a lot more sense if you know at least the basic plot of Koschei the Deathless, so I’d recommend skimming the Wikipedia article at least.

A stupid cold being stupid has destroyed my life and my ability to read fics for a few days, so sorry for disappearing for a few days! The good news are:

- The first part of the meta is a beta away from publication and I’m really excited about it (because yes, I’m the nerd that gets excited talking about dogmas and feminism)

- The More Than Love collection, organized by @reylofanfictionanthology, is out with HUNDREDS of new fics, which means that I’ll be binge-reading and recommending my favs soon.

- I actually have 5 or 6 fic recs almost ready to publish; I just need to re-read them to write the review.

I should be working on my scholarship and university applications, but instead, I’m simultaneously writing a flavored lubed-themed PWP oneshot, a soft Force-Bond vignette, and a meta on dogmatic feminism posting bad anti-Reylo arguments that is already 5k and I’m not even halfway it. Oh, and consuming a stupid amount of Olympic sports.

I’ll make it up and post a couple fic recs tomorrow, I promise. <3
