We recently participated (and kicked ass) in the Tour de Mur, a 3-day bike ride along the lovely river Mur. We had only one day of rain, which for me meant lots of mud splatter from Roman’s back tire. Overall we saw beautiful scenery, drank a few spritzers and rode alongside a lot of impressive beer bellies! And yes, I am still sporting my Bike and Build jersey from 2007. It only has 1 tiny hole!

Bike & Build

As a senior in college, I pulled my bicycle out of my parents’ garage, where it had been stored for the past 10+ years, to “train” for a trip:

In the summer of 2007, I bicycled across the United States, logging over 3,500 miles from Nags Head, North Carolina to San Diego, California.  I crossed three mountain ranges, scaling 11,000-foot passes.  I faced 15-20mph winds and bore 110-degree heat.  I battled sunburns, saddle sores, fatigue, and dehydration.  I was lucky not to battle any cars or trucks.  On my days off, I traded in my clip-on cycling shoes for work boots, joining construction teams to build homes with affordable housing organizations like Habitat for Humanity.  It was exhausting and exhilarating.

I don’t even remember where I learned about Bike and Build, but when I did, I knew it was something I had to do.  Facing down the barrel of college graduation with zero plans lined up, I needed a challenge - something physical and emotional to jar me awake and inspire my next steps.  I had no idea how big a challenge I would undertake when I applied to join 29 other young people, but it started with relearning how to ride a bicycle, how to clip in (and, perhaps more importantly, out) of my pedals, and then, once the trip was underway, how to compel my muscles to keep working after 8+ hours on the road.  I was completely underprepared, but at least I had Newton and his laws of motion on my side: I was on my way and wouldn’t be stopped.

For me, the service side of the organization - promoting affordable housing - was a given.  I’ve been interested in public and community service since my Girl-Scout days in elementary school, and the opportunity to raise money and attention for an important cause like homelessness and housing was the easy part.  The unique way that the organization ties service with a quest like a cross-country cycling trip was what intrigued me most.

Now nearly a decade after I joined them, Bike and Build is still going strong.  Since its founding in 2003, B&B has:  

Engaged 3,300 riders

Donated $6.2 million to the affordable housing cause

Volunteered 225,000 build site hours

Pedaled 10.5 million miles

They’ve also taken on public and cyclist safety issues to protect their riders and other cyclists around the country.

Bike and Build’s 2017 leaders have been selected and now they’re looking for riders for the five trips planned for this year.  Learn more and apply here.

Graduating Senior Promoting Housing Affordability by Biking Across the Country - Geneva Gondak is a College senior who is joining the non-profit group Bike & Build. Through this Philadelphia-based organization, she is able to raise awareness of the issue of housing affordability across the country. Olive and I are sad to be leaving this studio which I shared with @pwpress for three years, the place where I first started fundraising for @bikeandbuild and affordable housing by painting people's selfies, the place where I started the #voicesofhome project and recieved my first grant, the place that gave me refuge after my undergrad was completed, a shelter from the storm of life stuff, of working and trying to cover rent and food. But I am excited to begin my residency this January at @newcitygalerie, and honored for the opportunity to follow the legacy of the many successful artists who resided at New City. How nice it is to have this gift to fuel me through the holiday season. caitlin, may the space serve you well. Here's to new chapters!
