Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a key ally of the BJP, expressed his full support for the Budget, claiming it aligns with TDP’s 10 growth principles. Speaking to the media ahead of Delhi’s Assembly elections, Naidu criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, labeling it a “half-engine sarkar” and calling for a “double-engine government,” a term often used by the BJP to highlight the benefits of having the same party in power at both the state and national levels. He said Delhi needed a government that would foster inclusive growth, as opposed to the current one, which he claimed has failed. On the Union Budget, Naidu lauded its emphasis on women, the poor, youth, and farmers, while noting its focus on six key growth sectors. He called it a progressive and pro-people budget that reflects the vision for a Viksit Bharat, with tax relief for the middle class. While Naidu backed the Budget, opposition parties such as Congress and YSR Congress criticized the lack of major announcements for Andhra Pradesh, especially when states like Bihar received more allocations ahead of upcoming elections. YSR Congress leader B Rajendranath Reddy accused Naidu of failing to secure Andhra’s rightful share from the Centre. Naidu also addressed a rally in Delhi’s Shahdara, urging the people to support the BJP. He drew a comparison between his rival, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, both of whom he criticized for lavish expenditures. Naidu appealed to Delhi residents to vote out AAP in a similar manner to how Andhra Pradesh voted out Jagan Reddy’s party. Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurates the new campus of Indian Institute of Handloom Technology at Fulia, Nadia, West Bengal

Shri Giriraj Singh in his inaugural address highlighted the contribution of different schemes of Textile ministry for the ‘Vikas & Pragati’ of handloom weavers. The Minister dedicated this institute with world-class infrastructure to West Bengal and declared the increase of intake for first-year admission into this institute from the existing 33 to 66. The children of handloom weavers will get the opportunity to study in this institute and serve the handloom industry of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand & Sikkim.

Hon’ble Minister highlighted that IIHT Fulia will contribute significantly to the textile value chain by using Flax and linen as raw materials and using design inputs from NIFT, Kolkata. The Union Minister also highlighted the legacy of handloom weaving of West Bengal and said that our handloom products were having more demand than the cloth produced in Manchester before the industrial revolution. The fineness of the hand-woven fabrics of Bengal was as such that a saree can be passed through a small ring.

The Union Minister has also highlighted that the textile ministry is committed to reach the market size of 300 billion dollars in the year 2030 and provide employment to 6 crore persons in the textile value chain.

The minister stated that this IIHT building is not just a building but it is a platform from where the handloom weavers’ children can fulfill their dreams. By making the students highly skilled, the handloom craft will be made sustainable and it will give the handloom sector global recognition. The confluence of simplicity, tradition, and technology is a joint step towards making ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’

Story of a lonely artist

Film Review | Behrupiya | Utpal Datta

It sounds pathetic, but the reality is that a huge number of folk art forms are on the verge of vanishing from the world. There may be many reasons for this disappearing state within our society. Several Indian films have been made on this existential crisis of folk art forms and the void it has created. Bhaskar Biswanathan’s short film ‘Behrupia,’ based on a similar theme, has been selected for this year's Indian Panorama.

'Behrupia' is a familiar character in rural areas of India, mainly in the Hindi belts. Currently, these multifaceted ‘Behrupiyas’ are mainly confined to the forms of Hanuman, Shiva, and Kali. These three characters are immensely respected and worshiped by the common public. There are also stories about how kings and emperors used such ‘Behrupiyas’ for spying.

The film's ‘Behrupiya’ is a member of the present day's world. He carries a small sound system on his bicycle and travels from place to place, performing his art of being a ‘Behrupiya,’ enacting popular dialogues from Hindi films and television serials. He also uses costumes to enhance the look of the character he plays. Most of his audience is comprised of children, with a small number being women. No matter how happy the children are, they cannot afford to support him financially. The village women also lack financial capacity, so some of them give rice and other food items. Incidentally, once his foot gets hurt, and he cannot work. One day, while fetching water and returning home, he finds that his costumes are gone. Despite his unimaginable injuries, he wanders the village in search of his stolen costumes.

The story is simple, and the audience is often familiar with the expected sadness and pain of the ending of such stories. The extinction of a folk art is sad for connoisseurs, yet there is no way but to accept it as part of the evolution of time. The film is about the life of a modern-day Behrupiya. This modern Behrupiya is a creation of the story-writer. Such modifications will certainly hurt the traditional character of folk art, but it will also reveal a picture of the recent trend of folk life in a society where the influence of cinema and TV serials is unimaginable. The storywriter-director may have thought that some modernization could give a new life to this endangered folk-art form. In support of this, he shows that the costumes and dialogues of the characters attracted the children community, and some children have even expressed their desire to become a ‘Behrupiya.’ This positive attitude distinguishes the film from other films on the same subject. In Buddhadev Dasgupta's 'Bagh Bahadur,' the folk artist died of exhaustion in the struggle for survival, announcing the tragic end of an art form. In contrast, Bhaskar Biswanathan's film is a message of hope that the younger generation is showing interest in the multifaceted and going along with it, distinguishing the film from other similar films.

The film's lead actor, Devesh Ranjan, makes the character believable. His expressions were explosive, especially in the silent parts. Earlier, he successfully played the central role in Kamakhya Narayan Singh's 'Bhor.'

A calm and lively picture of a village in Bihar is beautifully captured by the camera, creating the necessary local setting for the story. The camera plays a significant role in capturing the subtle expressions of the main character. Director of Photography Yogendra Panda has helped the director realize the vision of the director. The film is edited by Himanshu Dwivedi and Deepankar Sarkar. The editor's skill is particularly noticeable in the scenes where the devastated ‘Behrupiya’ goes around looking for the clothes after they are stolen. In terms of the story, the character's mind was restless and fast at that moment, but the injury to his leg prevents him from walking fast. The editor has balanced the pace of the film by properly controlling these two apparently opposing motions. The music of the film also keeps the plot moving. The film is produced by Aditi Santosh Tapasvi and Bikram Viswanathan.

Two Assamese technicians were associated with the film in editing and BGM, and they are Dipankar Sarkar and Arnab Deka, respectively.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 26 opposition parties have come together to stop the victory chariot of PM Modi-led NDA. On July 18, a gathering of these parties was held in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, where all of them announced the creation of an anti-NDA front named Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance-India.
