When school closed for summer, Haruko realised how many students Tokyo really held: the cafe was filled to the brim with customers asking for refreshing beverages, milkshakes, ice creams and the freshest desserts they had. She had never been so busy before, but at least the cafe had air conditioning, and with more guests, her tips started to grow as well. She had already started saving most of them for an upcoming summer festival she was looking forwward to, wondering how different it would be from the ones in her small countryside town.

That day, she was the one entrusted to open the cafe. On a hand, it was annoying to wake up so early on a vacation day, but it also meant the trip would have been more pleasant with the fresher air of the morning, and the place wouldn’t have been too busy for the first hour or so, as most students liked to sleep in on summer vacations anyways.

When she walked in, she found the list the owner had left her, with the tasks she was meant to cover before the first customers arrived. She followed each point, one by one: setting the tables with the menus and the sugar bags, preparing the coffee, brewing the iced tea... She went through everything pretty quickly, which left her with the last point to cover.

She knew the place; it was a small bakery just around the corner, almost attached to the cafe, in fact the two shops were obtained by separating the same environment. The respective owners had made an agreement so the cafe would always buy desserts and pastries from the bakery, and that way, customers would get to the bakery for extra products like bread and more. Haruko had often walked past it, but never properly visited it.

She took the keys, closed the door of the shop as she left, and walked around the corner. The bakery was literally a few steps ahead, with a smell of fresh bread rising from it and a queue of old women waiting to walk in. Haruko peeked from the entrance, giving the glass door a nervous knock.

“Hello? I’m from the cafe,” she said, giving an apologetic look to the grannies glaring at her. “I didn’t mean to jump the queue, but we’ll open the cafe in a bit and...”

“Oh, no worries!” The baker was a round woman with a large smile and black hair pulled back by a handkerchied tied at her nape. “My assistant should be done with them, he’s in the back. You can go straight to him.”

Haruko thanked her and swiftly made her way past the counter. If the bakery smelled of delicious things already, the back of the store was mouth-watering. There were cakes, all kinds of breads, desserts, croissants, bignets waiting to be filled. Her stomach immediately let out a hungry growl.

“Hello?” She called again. “My name is Haruko, I came to pick the pastries for the cafe.”
