Robby is the underdog - Part 6
(Follow up to my other Robby is the underdog posts)
In my post Robby is the protagonist, I talk about the aspects of Robby's character and journey that make him the protagonist (amongst the kids).
One aspect is that Robby is the only character to be in one of the conflicts in every mid-season episode and finale since s1e10. This still is true after s6 part 1:
s1e10 - avt final match
s2e5 - mall fight
s2e10 - school fight
s3e5 - juvie fight
s3e10 - dojo fight with Kreese and Johnny
s4e5 - Cobras shaving Hawk's mohawk
s4e10 - avt final match
s5e5 - apartment fight
s5e10 - dojo brawl
s6e5 - boys' captaincy match
Robby's win, or should I say Miguel's loss, rounded out another interesting set of parallels in the story.
In my post Robby is the underdog - Part 4, I talked about Miguel's parallels with Silver.

From that post:
In s4e8, Silver and Miguel each realized that they aren't the most important person to the person they're most loyal to. Silver realized Johnny is more important to Kreese. Miguel realized that Robby is more important to Johnny. In s1e10, Miguel wanted to show no mercy to Robby and reminded Johnny about their lesson when Johnny tried to stop Miguel from showing no mercy to Robby. In s4e8, Silver wanted to show no mercy to Johnny and reminded Kreese about their lessons when Kreese tried to stop Silver from showing no mercy to Johnny. Though, Miguel did follow through with showing no mercy while Silver didn't. In s4e10, Silver and Miguel each undermined and gave up on the person they were most loyal to. Silver framed Kreese and got him arrested. Miguel walked away from the tournament, making it a sure loss for Johnny. At the end of the s4 avt, Silver was enjoying his dirty win while Robby stood behind him upset and Johnny sadly watched from the side. At the end of the s1 avt, Miguel was enjoying his dirty win while Johnny stood behind him upset and Robby sadly watched from the side. In s5e5, Daniel was coaxed into a fight with Silver, and Silver showed mercy in the end. Robby was pressured into a fight with Miguel, and Miguel showed mercy in the end. In s5e10, although Daniel got his victory over Silver, Robby is yet to get his victory over Miguel... the real conclusion to the Miguel-Robby rivalry will come next season.
In s6e5, Robby got his win against Miguel, like Daniel had gotten his win against Silver in s5e10. (Though, I don't think this rivalry is completely over. Silver's also returning in Part 2. We'll see if he and Daniel face off again and if Miguel and Robby face off again at one point.)
Daniel's win against Silver was iconic and cathartic, with flashbacks of Silver's lessons in KK3 of the Quicksilver method, which Silver had used to torture Daniel with. Daniel got a "hero" victory over Silver.
Like I talked about in a recent post, Miguel got a "Near-Villain Victory" loss to Robby. That is, Robby got a "hero" victory over Miguel.
"All hope looks lost. Soon the Big Bad will achieve their goal of taking over/destroying the city/world/universe, and there's nothing the heroes can do to stop them! But then WHAM — something unexpected happens, and the tide turns in the heroes' favor, allowing them to overcome the villain and win. This is what we call a Near-Villain Victory, where the bad guys look like they're going to win only to get defeated at the last moment." (from tvtropes.com)
Comparing Miguel and Silver, when it comes to how they behave with Robby and Daniel resp., both believed that they were entitled to having their apologies accepted, and both completely lacked self-awareness when they gave those apologies. Neither has ever looked back and considered Robby's or Daniel's pov resp.. In Miguel's case, he suddenly said "I'm sorry" at the end of assaulting Robby and pushing him to his limit. Miguel was even going to break his arm for no reason at all, but Miguel suddenly decided to stop and expected Robby to understand and trust him immediately. In Silver's case, he went with Kreese to the Miyagi-Do dojo to set terms for the dojo war. This was the first time Daniel was seeing Silver since Silver had played an intricate ruse over 30 years ago to get revenge against Daniel on behalf of Kreese and Cobra Kai. Miguel and Silver both frame themselves as good guys and gaslight their targets about their past behaviors towards them. (Silver has done so since Daniel rejected his apology.) As I mentioned above, both Miguel and Silver "showed mercy" in s5e5 and both chose to do those fights. Miguel in s6e5 and Silver in s5e10 were each so sure they'd win these fights, but both suffered humiliating "villain" losses in front of the dojo students.
For Robby, this win against Miguel was meaningful. It was his first official win against Miguel, and it was the only fair fight they've had. In terms of the Hero's Journey and the 3-act story structure, it mirrored their s1 avt match. Miguel had cheated to win that fight, essentially robbing Robby of that win. Robby was the underdog in that match. He was still the underdog in this match too. As Robby prepared for this match, flashbacks were shown for Robby's "second place" trauma including Robby's loss to Miguel in the s1 avt. These flashbacks are representative of Robby's deeper trauma of being second place in life, especially wrt Johnny, and this trauma drives Robby's character story. Daniel's flashbacks during his victory against Silver were related to Daniel's trauma due to Silver that drive Daniel's character story.
Miguel is still the bully between Robby and Miguel, too. Although most people focus on his blatant actions in s1 and s2, his actions in s5 and s6 were more subtle. (Of course, many fans even dismiss most or all of Miguel's blatant wrong actions against Robby, either downplaying that Miguel's actions were "wrong" or excusing his actions because of the school fight.) There are so many forms of bullying. A few can be found in the subtext of Miguel's behavior throughout:
Scapegoating - Miguel wrote Robby's name and framed him as the bad guy in his application letter to Stanford. Miguel has never once taken accountability for his actions in the school fight. Afterwards, he only regretted showing mercy (and gaslit Johnny and Tory and deflected blame for his own actions onto them). Along with everyone else, Miguel acts like he did nothing wrong to Robby, and Robby is to blame for their rivalry and everything that happened between them.
Robby quietly listened while Miguel read his application letter. He'd proudly scapegoated Robby in it, and all the adults, including heartless Johnny, gushed over it. Robby mentioned the scapegoating only after Miguel asked for his opinion about the letter. But Robby mentioned it, and that's meaningful. I came across a quote: "The strongest defense against gaslighting is to know your own truth so deeply that you'll immediately recognize that someone else's version of your story is false." Since s4e4, Robby hasn't spoken about his side of the story for the school fight. After what's happened s5e5 onwards, it's reassuring to see that he still believes that he wasn't the bad guy in it. He wasn't, and that is one of many truths he needs to hold onto or recognize about his relationships with the other characters. This also goes back to why he doesn't feel supported by the other characters. He knows that they all vilify him only for the school fight with Miguel, although Miguel isn't the innocent "good guy" in that fight.
Gaslighting - In s5e5, after the apartment fight, Miguel claimed that he didn't learn karate to hurt people, right after he specifically said yes to the fight so that he could use karate to hurt Robby. Miguel also acted like he'd never done anything wrong to Robby in the school fight, and Robby’s reaction---a legitimate fight/trauma response---at the end of the fight was unprovoked. (That response led to a horrible accident.) In s6e5, the night before the captaincy match, Miguel also tried to "convince" Robby that Miguel needs the win more. When Robby called him out for that, Miguel claimed that that wasn't what he was doing, and then continued to try to "convince" him. Blatant gaslighting. When Robby has his guard up, he picks up on manipulation. This is why, for example, he was not swayed by Kreese until the match with Kenny.
In the bottom gif, the way Robby reacts when Miguel says, "That's not what I'm saying," as if Robby's responding, "What are you saying, then?" in a challenging way. (Tanner's use of body language to convey all the nuances of Robby's emotions and communication has always been overlooked or dismissed by almost all fans, especially in s5e5 onwards.)
Even the way Miguel looked at him in at the end was itself a gaslight, as if Robby was being unreasonable.
Intimidation - At the start of this conversation, Miguel told Robby that no matter what happens he has no beef with him. Miguel followed this with trying to "convince" him that Miguel needs this more. Miguel wanted Robby to know that Miguel would do whatever it takes to win.
Controlling behavior - In s5, Miguel kept acting like he has some authority over Robby. Miguel acted like he's entitled to having an issue with Johnny spending time with Robby. At the waterpark, Miguel acted like he's entitled to know or have a say in who Robby spends time with or defends. Miguel claimed that Robby isn't a "good guy" just because he'd done something to benefit Miguel. This shows that Miguel believes that he gets to decide if Robby is a "good guy" or not. After they started training at Miyagi-Do, Miguel acted like he has the right to have a problem with Sam and Robby being friends. Miguel also watched and listened as Robby spoke with Kenny at the ST trials.
Since seeing that Robby was with Johnny and deciding not to "let it get to him" (as he'd told Eli and Demetri), Miguel paid attention to and had an opinion about who Robby would talk to, spend time with, or defend, whenever Robby was around.
To note, Miguel does the same with Sam, not just wrt Robby but also wrt Tory. Miguel wanted Sam to be friend with Tory after she joined Miyagi-Do. Miguel's never shown Sam empathy for what Tory had done to her. Johnny, Miguel, and Tory are counterparts in their rivalries with Daniel, Robby, and Sam resp. Just like he defended Johnny's side to Daniel in s3e9, Miguel has always defended Tory's side to Sam. This is all inline with Miguel never taking accountability for and believing that he is justified in his own side of the rivalry with Robby that Miguel started and controls. After Robby won the match fairly, Robby made sure to confirm with Miguel that they were still good. Robby knows that Miguel's unpredictable in this sense, especially given Miguel's past and present behavior with him.
Name-calling and antagonizing - Miguel called Robby "runner up" even though Miguel had cheated in the AVT to win. Miguel had done this in response to Robby honestly telling Johnny that Johnny was just gonna get Miguel's ass kicked if he forced them to try to get along, meaning they would just get into a fight. In the school fight, when Robby called out that Miguel had cheated in the avt, Miguel taunted him about Johnny teaching Miguel and not him. Later, Robby asked a legitimate question about why Miguel took advantage of Sam (as he'd kissed her while she was drunk), Miguel said that he would never. Then, Robby asked why'd it happen, and Miguel proudly proclaimed that she loves him and not Robby. Mentioning these two instances as this is a pattern with Miguel, and he has never believed saying these things to Robby were wrong.
People get upset when anyone calls out that Miguel is the bully and not the new gen Karate Kid. But, just like with his narcissistic traits, it's the context and combination of his actions that make him the bully. Robby is rarely the one to initiate conflict between them. Many fans like to claim that Robby didn't accept Miguel's "mercy" and then "struck first" at the end of the school fight, but that's just an entitled mentality. A person can't assault and antagonize someone and then suddenly stop and expect that person to be okay with them immediately. Miguel's behavior was unhinged. The fact that he doesn't see anything wrong with his own behavior in the school fight is the biggest red flag. That, plus all of his other red flags... In s2, when he returned the medal, he gaslighted Robby that the Cobras---as in, he himself---are not all assholes. He still views himself this way---not an asshole and justified in all of his actions against Robby.
Cobra Kai is a sports underdog story, like the rest of the franchise. In s6e5, the writers gave Robby a balance boost so he won the captaincy fight and then reset his underdog status at the start of the tournament. Miguel's not an underdog and stopped being one in s1e5. He's the bully in their rivalry, kept winning, and was eventually given a villain's loss.

Okay I can't get this out of my mind so I'm going over who I think is in the top 10 on the hero charts (at least for some time) MANGA ENDING SPOILERS
No. 1: Lemillion
The icon of the hour, Togata ranks in the top 10 since he was 19, just barely missing Hawks' record and being the second youngest hero to reach top 10
No. 3: Ryukyu
Ryukyu DESERVES to be top three hero, she is literally always standing on business. I don’t have much else to say since she’s already top ten in canon
No. 4: Nejire-Chan
My favorite in the big three, a sweet talkative hero with a bomb ass quirk and a low property damage rate, her popularity is through the ROOF. She works a lot but her constant team-ups with Lemillion and Suneater make all three of them really popular which gets her in the top ten at around 23
No. 5: Uravity
My queen, I think she ranks in the top ten in her late twenties. In where the timeline is in my head where these are the current rankings, she has been in no 5 for 2 years- it only took so long because she neglected her hero duties for a bit to start up the children quirk therapy thing, and when it started up and she was the front and center face of it, Uravity's popularity rating shot her up the hero rankings real fast (plus she could finally focus on her hero duties)
No. 6: Phantom Thief
Canonically placing high on the hero charts, I believe he first placed in the top ten when he was 21- quite young but not the youngest. Amazing crime solving rate but held down by people who think his quirk is scary. Not my idea but he has an agency with Shinso that scouts heroes with "villainous" quirks. He shot up to the top ten after a particularly stressful fight and the publics opinion on him finally flipped
No. 7: Shoto
The ice prince of UA makes his appearance! He solves crimes quick and easy and has a pretty face to match his stellar performance- however early in his career he got things done a little too quick at the cost of quality and his ice and fire made a mess. He's gotten way better at it over the years though
No. 10: Mudman
ALSO canonically placing high in the hero charts, I think Honenuki would be at no 10. He's quite popular but the damage sometimes caused by his quirk is... annoying to say the least. He hung out in the teens for a while before finally making 10th place as of this year (in whenever this takes place)
The other places are people we don’t know, no canonical characters or just I can’t think of any other characters that would be in top ten.
BTW, the reason that Bakugo and Midoriya are not up here at all is bc at this time, they just were not in the cool kids top 10 😔 truly tragic. I think eventually the two would get up there, but with Bakugo’s anger issues that canonically affected his rankings pretty badly, and Midoriya joining the race so late- not to mention all the controversy that would surround a quirkless pro hero- they both stay in the lower ranks for a while.

Todays rip: 25/09/2023
Aquarium in the Ocean
Season 6 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume FF
Ripped by Zielony Szpieg
youtube
If you ask any avid SiIvaGunner fan to recount the most important parts of Season 5, you'll find two songs to be nigh inevitable to be brought up. There's many concise ways to identify the fifth season by today - it was one of the lightest years on the channel in terms of new lore, it was the season tasked with succeeding the indescribable scale and success of the King for Another Day Tournament and its celebration the year after, it saw the official debut of SiIvaGunner Fusion Records, and it overall was one of the highest-quality years in terms of rips uploaded. Yet two icons remain dominant in the minds of many a SiIvaGunner fan, two songs that caused an absolute uproar during their heyday - Astronaut in the Ocean and Yankin'.
Its hard to really overstate just how much chaos these two songs alone put the channel audience in: I once previously tried to summarize it all in my post on Knowledge of the Depths from the same season. Put simply, Astronaut in the Ocean began to appear frequently in low-effort, unsynced mashups in reference to its origins as a TikTok meme, which gave it a sort of perception as an anti-hero for the fanbase - the joke that, no matter what it was attached to, would never even try to deliver something that sounded conventionally "high quality". If the astronaut was an anti-hero, Yankin' was a full-on villain - the crassness of the song paired with the somewhat hard to listen to vocals and immediately identifiable beat made the song into a source of downright hatred within the comment section, on a level only really previously matched by Season 1's "Bean" (more on that guy at a later date). It was fascinating, for a year without much in the way of proper story progression, to see so much community discourse still happen althesame regarding the state of the channel.
Months later, when Season 6 arrived, the dust had settled´. Astronaut in the Ocean had gotten a sort of cult following for its apathetic, inconsistent use in rips very much unique to it, and Yankin' even had its own takeover, to directly address and cement the meme's status as a villain on the channel. The memes are now a staple of SiIvaGunner despite - or perhaps because of - our ire, and they've been infrequently appearing in rips the same way that Grand Dad, Snow Halation, The Nutshack and so many others oft would back in the early days. And to me, no rip better illustrates that new status quo than Aquarium in the Ocean.
Aquarium in the Ocean follows the style of several rips preceding it as a "mashup medley", most easily comparable to something like Memey Hell from Season 1. While that rip acted as a sort of celebration to Season 1 as a whole, Aquarium in the Ocean feels like it does the same for Season 5's two big jokes as discussed above. Despite featuring both the Season's bringers of hell, they're used in very genuine, serious ways - Astronaut in the Ocean leads the song off and is actually, for once, tuned to the original song's key, and Yankin's vocals play surprisingly softly when paired with different instrumentation. The two are blended together with several other memes from the channel's history, be it old-school like Soulja Boy or more recent ones like Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney's Epic Rap Battle of History - its a sort of scattershot selection of jokes, yet each one is given enough time to sink in as funny whilst matching the Aquarium Park instrumental backing quite nicely.
Really, though, above its quality and sound its the meaning to the rip that I really care about. There's no longer any sort of panic in the comments over the presence of Yankin' - many are even surprised and delighted to hear the track finally sounding *good* in a rip. The two are now just jokes amidst the many others, accepted tools within the arsenal of the SiIva team - and permanent member of the channel's family. I can't say if Aquarium in the Ocean was really the rip to cement that, but something about its assortment of various jokes paired with its somewhat sentimental sound really carries that energy through. Zielony Szpieg, as far as I'm aware, is someone who submitted this rip to the team through email as a fan, and they did an excellent job at both making a good-sounding tune and something surprisingly poignant for the subject matter at hand. I know not how to contact him or if he'll ever see this, but if he does: Ya did good!

How to Get Fit Like Virat Kohli? – Inside the Mind & Muscle of a Cricket Legend

What if we told you that the fitness secrets of India’s most consistent run-machine, Virat Kohli, aren’t locked away in some elite gym or hidden protein shake formula? What if the code to Kohli’s level of fitness is less about luck and more about lifestyle?
Let’s break it down — not like a gym bro, but like a smart athlete who studies the game, lives the grind, and breathes discipline. This isn’t just about six-packs and heavy reps. This is Virat Kohli style fitness — holistic, structured, and laser-focused on performance.
1. Fitness Is a Lifestyle, Not a Phase
Virat’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. From being an average athlete in the early stages of his career to becoming a global fitness icon, Kohli turned his fitness into a way of life.
He once confessed that it was around 2014 when he completely overhauled his approach. He dropped junk food, embraced a high-protein diet, and committed himself to peak conditioning. What changed? Everything. His game, his mindset, and his longevity.
2. Discipline Over Motivation
While the world gets up looking for motivation, Virat gets up looking for structure.
"I train five days a week, sometimes twice a day. My off days are still active recovery. The body must move," — Kohli once shared in an interview.
This means one simple thing: If you want to get fit like Virat Kohli, discipline must become your coach.
3. The Cricket Fitness Training Routine Blueprint
Here’s where the action kicks in — the cricket fitness training routine that defines Kohli’s physical edge.
🔥 Strength & Conditioning
Kohli focuses on functional strength, not just bulking up. His routines include:
Compound Lifts: Deadlifts, squats, and clean jerks — for power and balance.
Olympic Lifting: To improve explosive strength.
Bodyweight Workouts: Pull-ups, push-ups, dips for muscular endurance.
He doesn’t chase aesthetics. He trains like an athlete — for strength, stability, and agility.
🏃♂️ Speed, Agility & Endurance
You can’t survive international cricket without elite stamina. Virat’s routine includes:
Treadmill HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): Sprint-recover cycles.
Agility Drills: Cone drills, ladder steps, quick-feet movements.
Core Circuit Training: Planks, Russian twists, leg raises — a strong core = explosive performance.
His focus is not just staying fit, but staying match-fit. There’s a big difference.
🧘♂️ Flexibility & Mobility
Recovery and mobility are two underrated pillars. Kohli spends a serious chunk of his time on:
Yoga & Stretching: Improves breathing, focus, and flexibility.
Foam Rolling & Deep Tissue Massage: For recovery and injury prevention.
4. Diet is the Unsung Hero
You can’t out-train a bad diet, and Kohli knows this better than most. His diet is clean, lean, and mean:
Protein-first meals: Grilled tofu, quinoa, eggs, lean meats.
No junk, zero sugar: Sugar is the enemy; natural sweetness only.
Hydration overload: Coconut water, lemon water, and lots of H2O.
He also avoids gluten and dairy most of the time. His cheat meals? Rare, but guilt-free. It’s a mental reset, not a binge.
5. Mental Fitness – The Gamechanger
Physical fitness is only half the game. Kohli is known for his intense focus, aggression, and mental toughness.
Meditation: To calm the mind and center the body.
Visualization Techniques: Mentally walking through performance before match day.
Reading & Podcasts: He fuels his brain just as much as his biceps.
6. Recovery is Training Too
Here’s where most amateurs go wrong — thinking rest is weakness.
Kohli is a huge advocate for sleep, muscle recovery, and active rest days. His recovery rituals include:
8+ hours of sleep
Epsom salt baths
Cold showers
Massage therapy
This is why he remains injury-resistant even in a career that spans over a decade of non-stop cricket.
7. Consistency Beats Intensity
Virat isn’t Superman. He’s just super consistent.
He doesn’t go all out for 10 days and vanish for 20. He shows up every day, sticks to the plan, and adapts when needed. This mindset — humble, dedicated, and growth-driven — is what keeps him at the top.
So if you want to train like Kohli, forget shortcuts. Commit to the long road.
Final Over: Your Turn to Play
Getting fit like Virat Kohli isn’t about copying his exact workout. It’s about adopting his cricket fitness training routine mindset:
Build strength that supports your sport.
Eat clean and hydrate like a pro.
Sleep, recover, and repeat.
Train with purpose, not ego.
And above all — make consistency your superpower.
Remember, fitness is not a goal. It’s a commitment to your best self — every single day.
You don’t have to be on Team India to train like a champion. You just need to show up like one.

Every title cards comic references that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man picked on (and other comic references!):
Episode 1: The first opening title card pays homage to Amazing Fantasy #15, the legendary debut of Spider-Man! That pose, that vibe… it’s a timeless classic brought to life on screen!
Episode 2: The second episode's title card is a clear nod to The Amazing Spider-Man #546, the start of Brand New Day. New beginnings, fresh twists… you can feel the parallel here!
Episode 3: No exact match here, but it gives me big Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin vibes. Spidey in the foreground with Goblin's menacing face lurking behind. On the title card in the same pose is Norman Osborn. Coincidence? I think not...
PS: We cannot forget this awesome comic reference from episode 3 as well:
Because, seriously, this shot? This shot right here? It’s straight-up ripped from The Amazing Spider-Man #70 (1963), and I’m losing my mind over how beautifully they reinterpreted it.
First off, the spotlight composition—the way it isolates Spidey, trapping him in this stark contrast of yellow against the dark background? That’s classic Romita Sr. storytelling. In the comic, it’s police flashlights pinning him to a brick wall, making him look like a fugitive. But in YFNSM, it’s an overhead searchlight casting him in that same “nowhere to run” energy. It’s such a subtle way to say, “Yeah, Peter Parker will always be hunted, always be one step ahead, but always one mistake away from getting caught.”
And THE POSE. THE POSE. The way his body is angled, mid-movement, hands splayed out in that classic spider-crawl? The way the camera looks down at him from above, mimicking the way the comic had him in full view, framed by the light? They didn’t just reference the cover—they translated it into motion.
But the REAL kicker? The thematic parallel. In ASM #70, Peter’s on the run because he’s being falsely accused of a crime (thanks to Jameson’s smear campaign, as usual). And now, in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, we get the exact same energy. It’s visual storytelling at its finest—showing us that no matter the era, no matter the medium, Spider-Man is always one step away from being a public enemy.
This show isn’t just referencing classic Spider-Man comics. It’s understanding them. It’s living in them. And that’s why it slaps so hard.
Episode 4: Then, we have another spectacular title card comic reference. This one’s an easy catch, it mirrors the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #100 (1971). A web of memories and legacy. Another true Spidey classic!
Episode 5: Spidey's signature crouch here is iconic, but the closest match? The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #3 (2015). Classic hero stance with that timeless Spidey energy!
Episode 6: Okay, Marvel fans, this one is sick. It’s a clear nod to the Marvel Knights: Daredevil cover from the early 2000s. Spidey + Daredevil? Always a win! Also, come on! I think that this reference is obvious too since this awesome episode literally stars Daredevil's special appearance here and what better to way to add Daredevil's comic reference to this outstanding title card! That's definetely genius!
Episode 7: For those who might not know, the title card for Episode 7 is a direct reference to The Amazing Spider-Man #318, an issue from Todd McFarlane’s legendary late-80s run. And let me tell you—this isn’t just a case of “oh, the poses kinda match,” this is an intentional, frame-for-frame recreation with just enough modernization to make it fit seamlessly into the show’s aesthetic. The detail, the pose, it’s like stepping right into a '90s Spidey comic.
THE VISUAL PARALLELS: IT’S ALL IN THE DYNAMICS
First off, let’s talk about the actual composition because wow, the way it mirrors the original comic cover is insane:
Spider-Man’s pose? Identical. Mid-air, twisted body, one leg bent, one stretched out, arms out in a perfect acrobatic counterbalance. It’s a classic Spidey silhouette, and the show absolutely nails it.
Scorpion? Literally the same aggressive forward charge, coiled tail framing the shot, muscles tensed as if he’s seconds away from landing a hit. They didn’t just throw Scorpion into the scene—they posed him exactly like McFarlane’s original artwork.
The background chaos? Both images have a wall of destruction, bricks and debris flying everywhere, emphasizing just how explosive this moment is. Even the curve of Scorpion’s tail is almost identical, acting as this natural framing device that guides your eye toward Spider-Man.
And it’s not just that they recreated the cover—it’s how they adapted it. The show takes McFarlane’s hyper-exaggerated, in-your-face comic book action and translates it into a sleeker, more stylized animated aesthetic, but without losing any of the energy.
AND THE BEST PART? THE EPISODE IS ABOUT SCORPION, JUST LIKE THE COMIC
Like. This isn’t just an aesthetic reference. This is an actual narrative parallel.
The Amazing Spider-Man #318 was part of Scorpion’s big return in McFarlane’s run, cementing him as a serious Spidey villain after some time in the background. And what’s Episode 7 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man about? Introducing Scorpion to the show.
They didn’t just pull a random iconic cover to reference—they pulled this specific issue because it matches what’s happening in the episode. It’s a visual AND thematic callback, connecting the animated series to the legacy of the comics in such an intentional way.
WHY THIS REFERENCE SLAPS SO HARD
This is what makes Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man feel so special—it understands Spidey’s history and respects it, but it’s not just doing a nostalgia play. It’s remixing and reinterpreting classic imagery to fit the show’s unique style while keeping that deep connection to Spider-Man’s comic roots.
It’s the kind of reference that works on multiple levels: - If you don’t know the comic, it just looks like a sick, action-packed title card. - If you do know the comic, you realize the insane level of detail that went into recreating it. - If you really know Spidey lore, you see how this isn’t just a visual reference but a full-circle moment, bringing Scorpion into the animated world just like this issue brought him back into comics.
It’s so good. It’s so smart. And it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes this show feel like it was made by people who genuinely love Spider-Man.
Episode 8: We need to talk about Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Episode 8’s title card because the way it references one of the most legendary panels in Spidey history is actually making me LOSE IT. This is a full-blown, screaming-into-my-pillow, rolling-on-the-floor moment.
Like. The moment I saw it??? My soul left my body. The audacity of this show to just casually drop a title card that is literally a frame-by-frame homage to The Amazing Spider-Man #50 (1963)—a.k.a. the “Spider-Man No More” issue, a.k.a. one of the most emotionally devastating, most ICONIC Spidey images EVER—was honestly just TOO MUCH for me to handle. And the fact that this comes as a jaw-dropping homage toJohn Romita Sr., the man who literally helped shape Spidey’s visual identity??? THE BEST THING EVER TO BE HONEST! Like, this wasn’t just some “Hey, look, we did a cool comic reference!” moment. No. The showrunners went all in on making this episode a modernized, emotionally gut-punching reimagining of the exact struggles that made that comic arc so unforgettable. And I NEED to talk about it.
The Reference
Romita Sr.’s original panel is so deeply ingrained in Spidey’s history that even people who don’t read comics probably know it. Peter walking away, head down, shoulders slumped, while his Spidey suit—crumpled, abandoned—hangs limply in the foreground. The composition. The colors. The gut-wrenching loneliness of it all. It’s a moment that SCREAMS "I can't do this anymore." And when it dropped in The Amazing Spider-Man #50? It defined what it means to be Peter Parker: this constant, heartbreaking cycle of sacrifice, of choosing between himself and the world, of trying to walk away even when he knows he never truly can.
AND THEN THIS SHOW COMES ALONG AND HITS ME WITH THIS???
The exact same framing. The exact same walk of defeat. The exact same abandoned mask in the foreground, except here it’s Peter’s hoodie (because let’s be real, that’s his version of the Spidey suit at this stage in his life). The warm yellows and greens replacing the original’s cold blues make it feel different but just as heavy. The graffiti, the dumpsters, the messy urban sprawl—it’s a perfect modernization of that same iconic moment.
Like, at its core, The Amazing Spider-Man #50 was about Peter Parker’s exhaustion. He’s broke. He’s stretched thin. He’s losing himself to the weight of responsibility, and he genuinely wonders if it’s all worth it. He’s sick of sacrificing his own happiness, sick of constantly choosing duty over self. So he makes a decision: he walks away.
But as we all know, being Spider-Man isn’t just something Peter does. It’s something he is. And no matter how much he tries to let go, the city still needs him. The people still need him. And ultimately… he still needs to be Spider-Man.
AND THIS SHOW SAID, “OKAY, BUT WHAT IF WE PUNCH YOU IN THE HEART EVEN HARDER?”
Because in Episode 8, we see this Peter—this younger, still-learning, still-growing Peter—go through that same internal war, but in his own way.
He’s questioning if he’s doing the right thing.
He’s weighed down by guilt and self-doubt.
He’s struggling to balance his normal life with the impossible expectations of being a hero.
And just like in ASM #50, we see him consider walking away.
We don’t get a dramatic "I QUIT" moment, but the entire episode oozes that same “Spider-Man No More” energy. We see Peter feeling like he’s failing—like maybe being Spider-Man isn’t making things better. Like maybe he should just… stop.
Why This Hurts More Than It Should
I think what really destroys me about this is that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man didn’t just reference a comic panel for the sake of being cool. They GET it. They understand that being Spider-Man is about the struggle, about the burden, about those moments where Peter just wants to let go but knows, deep down, that he never can.
I just CANNOT get over how perfect this homage is. It’s not just about recreating an iconic image. It’s about recreating its emotional impact in a way that fits this version of Peter.
The episode lives and breathes Romita Sr.'s legacy, even outside the title card.
It perfectly captures the weight of what it means to be Spider-Man.
It delivers one of the most heartfelt, jaw-dropping tributes to one of the greatest Spidey artists of all time.
John Romita Sr. helped define who Spider-Man is. His work showed us that Peter Parker isn’t just a hero because of his powers—he’s a hero because he never stops trying. And Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Episode 8 understands that completely.
I just know that somewhere, he’d be so proud to see his work honored like this. His art shaped Spider-Man as we know him. His legacy is woven into the DNA of this character, and this title card feels like a love letter to everything he built.
Romita Sr. gave us some of the most stunning, emotionally charged, timeless Spider-Man imagery ever. And this show—this wonderful, heartfelt, perfectly crafted show—just immortalized his influence for a whole new generation of fans.
John Romita Sr., you will be so deeply missed. But your art will always live on. This show is making sure your legacy lives on!
Episode 9: THEN, we move straight into Episode 9, which brings the momentum full circle. The previous episode was about Peter struggling with his identity, contemplating stepping away from being Spider-Man. But now? He doesn’t have a choice. He’s prey. The title card is once again a perfect recreation of a classic comic cover, this time from The Spectacular Spider-Man #215 (1976), where Scorpion is in full beast mode, literally holding Spider-Man’s torn mask in his claws. The show’s version is just as ominous—Scorpion crouched, mask in hand, the alley dripping with danger. The flow between these episodes is so well done. We go from Peter’s internal struggle (Episode 8) to his external nightmare (Episode 9).
The Comic: The Spectacular Spider-Man #215
This issue is not messing around. The cover immediately establishes a sense of dread—Scorpion is front and center, hulking over the remains of Spider-Man’s torn mask, claws dripping with webbing and possibly blood. The composition is chaotic yet deliberate; the jagged edges of the mask, the rain-streaked background, the intensity in Scorpion’s pose—this is the moment where you realize just how dangerous he is. It’s Predator and Prey for a reason. The contrast between Spidey’s usual agility and Scorpion’s brute force is at its most terrifying when Peter is cornered, and this cover captures that fear perfectly.
The Title Card: A Perfect Modern Reinvention
Now, look at the title card for Episode 9. It’s the same energy—but distilled through the show’s unique visual style.
The pose is nearly identical: Scorpion crouching low, ready to strike, completely dominant in the frame.
The mask, torn and held in his grip, is the most striking similarity. In the comic, it’s shredded almost beyond recognition, a brutal symbol of Spider-Man’s vulnerability. In the title card, we get a slightly more intact mask, but the meaning remains: Spider-Man has lost this fight.
Even the color palette mirrors the comic. The deep blues and greens of the comic’s murky background are translated into a darker, shadowy alley, making it clear that Peter is trapped. This isn’t his home turf—it’s a hunting ground.
The Episode’s Thematic Flow
Now, what really makes this title card hit so hard is how it follows the Spider-Man No More homage from Episode 8. In that episode, Peter was choosing to walk away, wrestling with his own identity and whether or not he could carry the weight of being Spider-Man. It was an internal struggle.
But in Episode 9? That choice is stripped away.
If Episode 8 was about Peter contemplating giving up the mask, Episode 9 is about someone ripping it from him.
Scorpion is the perfect villain to represent this shift. He’s a physical embodiment of what happens when Peter hesitates—when his doubt allows a predator to get too close.
The fact that this title card directly echoes a Spectacular Spider-Man cover also reinforces that we’re in the middle of a downward spiral for Peter. Things aren’t just bad; they’re getting worse [SPOILERS: For the first time in the show, we get to see what happens when Spider-Man stops pulling his punches—and it is downright feral.
The showrunners didn’t just adapt the Predator and Prey theme from the comic in its visuals. They adapted the entire energy of it. In the comic, Scorpion is portrayed as this absolute menace, a brutal tank of a villain that Spider-Man can’t just dance around—he has to put him down. And the show? The show does that concept justice.
Because Peter doesn’t just win. He almost demolishes Scorpion.
THE BRUTALITY—THE SHOW DOESN’T HOLD BACK
Let’s talk about that fight.
The rage in Peter’s attacks is visceral. You feel every punch. The animation, the sound design, the choreography—everything sells just how terrifying Peter is when he finally stops holding back.
The moment Scorpion realizes he’s not in control anymore? Chills. The second Peter stops dodging and just takes his attacks like they’re nothing—you know it’s over.
And then Peter goes in. No quips, no banter—just raw, unforgiving violence. He’s grabbing Scorpion's tail, ready to tear through him like he’s nothing until Lonnie stops him.
The sheer force of his punches is insane—there’s one hit that literally makes the air crack.
When Peter finally stands over Scorpion down on the ground, ready to kill him, I thnk it’s just framed just like the title card—only now, he’s the predator.
Like, this is not the kind of fight we would really expect to get in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Usually, Peter fights defensively, dodging, outsmarting, making sure to keep things under control. But in this episode?
Control is gone.
The showrunners make a deliberate choice to show that Peter Parker has limits. You can only push him so far before something in him snaps.
And the best part? This isn’t just violence for the sake of violence. It’s storytelling.
Peter isn’t just fighting Scorpion—he’s fighting his own guilt, his own doubts, his own pent-up frustration from everything that’s been building up over the past few episodes, especially from what Norman Osborn expects him to be.
The way it ties into Episode 8’s Spider-Man No More reference? Brilliant. Peter was walking away in Episode 8, questioning whether he could handle the burden of being Spider-Man. And in Episode 9? He answers that question—with violence.
This episode is a turning point. Spider-Man isn’t the same after this. And that’s what makes it so groundbreaking—it dares to ask the question: What happens when Peter Parker actually fights like the strongest person in the room?
Coming back to the title card, this isn’t just a reference for the sake of reference. The creative team behind Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is deeply engaged with Spider-Man’s visual storytelling history. They’re using these iconic images not just as callbacks, but as narrative devices. Each title card prepares you for the emotional and thematic core of the episode before it even starts.
And the fact that this is Scorpion’s episode? Oh, it’s perfect. This is a villain who has always been about overpowering Spider-Man in a way that few others can. Where Peter is quick, agile, and clever, Scorpion is relentless, savage, and built for destruction. And just like in the comic, this title card tells you everything you need to know—Peter is in real danger, and there’s no easy way out.
This is how you honor Spider-Man’s history. Not just with nods and winks, but by understanding what made these moments iconic and integrating them into new, powerful storytelling. The way these episodes flow from one to the next—from internal struggle to external nightmare—is just chef’s kiss.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man isn’t just referencing Spidey’s past. It’s becoming part of it.
Episode 10: There’s something incredibly poetic about the way Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man wraps up its first season, and the final episode’s title card is a masterful visual homage that encapsulates the essence of Spider-Man’s journey.
At first glance, it’s an obvious tribute to The Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1, the issue that saw Peter Parker reclaiming his identity and responsibilities after the dark, morally complex era of Superior Spider-Man. But on a deeper level, this visual choice is an intentional statement about Peter’s growth across the season—how far he’s come, how much he’s suffered, and where he stands by the end of it all.
The pose, colors, and composition of the title card aren’t just nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake—they're deeply symbolic of Peter’s restoration and reaffirmation as Spider-Man after a season of emotional and physical trials.
The pose: The way Peter swings freely through the city, arms open, fully embracing his role, is a deliberate contrast to the heavier, more burdened energy of previous episodes. This is Spider-Man at peace with himself, despite the darkness he’s endured.
The webbing’s movement: Unlike previous title cards, where there’s often an ominous, static, or intense energy (like Episode 9’s gritty Scorpion homage), the webs here move smoothly, forming large, elegant arcs—this sense of motion symbolizes forward momentum. Peter isn’t stuck in guilt, anger, or uncertainty anymore.
The bright, open sky: A notable shift from the darker, more confined settings in earlier episodes. The city below him is vibrant and golden—a visual metaphor for hope, a new beginning.
This mirrors the context of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (2014), where Peter returns to his life after being displaced by Otto Octavius (Superior Spider-Man). The comic cover was all about Peter swinging back into action, reclaiming what was his. The title card does the exact same thing for the animated series—Peter has wrestled with his darker impulses, faced his greatest threats, and now? He is, simply, Spider-Man again.
Also, I need to talk about how the final episode's title card completely introduces Spider-Man's red and blue suit FULLY detached from Norman's white suit dessign. Like, the white suit—both aesthetically and narratively—carries major implications:
A Nod to the Future Foundation Suit (obviously!)
In the comics, the Future Foundation suit (worn by Spider-Man when he joined the Fantastic Four’s successor team) was a symbol of change and new alliances, but it also represented a departure from Peter’s usual solo, street-level identity.
The show uses the white suit to evoke this same idea—it’s Spider-Man working under the influence of someone else’s system (Osborn in this case, rather than Reed Richards).
Norman Osborn’s Influence Over Peter
In the show, the white suit isn’t just a new look—it represents Norman Osborn’s grip on Peter.
It’s a physical manifestation of Peter being molded, shaped, and subtly manipulated into something Osborn envisions for him—a Spider-Man that fits his world.
This plays into Norman’s ongoing attempts to control Peter, not just physically but mentally and ideologically.
The Shift Back to Red & Blue: A Defiant Reclamation of Identity
Peter abandons the white suit and returns to his classic red and blue suit in Episode 9—and this timing is perfect.
Rejecting Osborn’s Vision
By donning the red and blue once more, Peter is essentially rejecting Norman’s ideology and control.
He is no longer Osborn’s “perfected” version of Spider-Man—he is his own Spider-Man.
This choice visually signals Peter choosing his own path, free from Osborn’s influence.
A Return to His Core Values
The red and blue suit represents Peter at his most authentic—his true, classic self.
While the white suit aligned with a more methodical, calculated, and potentially ruthless version of Peter (especially under Osborn’s mentorship), the red and blue signifies a return to his roots—a hero who fights not for power, but for responsibility and justice.
A Precursor to the Emotional Climax
The fact that Peter changes back in Episode 9, before the brutal fight with Scorpion, is crucial.
It sets the stage for what comes next: Peter proving that even in his classic form, he is not weak—he can still be terrifyingly powerful, dangerous, and ferocious when pushed to the edge.
Episode 10’s Title Card – The Final Step Out of Osborn’s Shadow
By the time we reach Episode 10’s title card, the transformation is complete.
Peter is fully and unapologetically himself—there’s no trace of Osborn’s influence left.
The bright colors, open sky, and confident pose in the title card visually contrast the earlier episodes, where Peter was more conflicted, burdened, and trapped in other people’s expectations.
This moment cements that Peter has broken free and fully embraced who he is meant to be.
The journey from Osborn’s white suit to Peter’s red and blue classic is a powerful metaphor for his growth across Season 1.
He starts the season under Osborn’s expectations, unsure of himself.
He experiments with power, anger, and control, seeing the cost of holding back vs. letting loose.
He chooses his own identity, stepping back into the red and blue suit in Episode 9.
He fully embraces it in Episode 10, swinging into the city on his own terms—free, strong, and completely Spider-Man.
The show brilliantly uses costume design to visually tell a story, making Peter’s rejection of Osborn’s influence one of the most satisfying and symbolic transformations of the season.
I think that the title cards in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are nothing short of spellbinding, serving as both vibrant introductions and powerful reflections of Peter Parker’s journey. The showrunners have masterfully woven in homages to Spider-Man’s rich comic book history, from classic Marvel cover aesthetics to deep-cut references like the Future Foundation suit’s influence on Peter’s temporary white attire. Each title card isn’t just a visual treat—it’s a storytelling device, evolving alongside Peter as he grapples with responsibility, loss, and identity. By the time we reach the final episode’s stunning tribute to The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (2014), the show makes it clear: this is a love letter to Spider-Man’s legacy, honoring his past while confidently swinging into the future.

32 Rianne Van Rompaey Is Stepping Back From Modeling! This just in: beloved model Rianne Van Rompaey is taking a break from her modeling career. The young star took to Instagram to share the news, citing a need to pursue other interests and passions. First beginning modeling in 2014, Van Rompaey became one of the most recognizable in the industry. Today, she’s fronted brands like Louis Vuitton, Chloé, Tom Ford, Mango, and more, in addition to having countless editorials and runways—including the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show—under her belt. We hope this isn’t goodbye! “I have many dreams and passions outside of fashion, many sides of my personality that took a backseat because this career was my biggest priority,” Von Rompaey recalls in her post’s sweet Instagram caption. “Adhering to my guess of other people’s idea of model Rianne Van Rompaey (still following?) was of utmost importance to me, because the expectations were so high, and I was payed so much to be perfect. I wanted everybody to love me. Somehow, something in me changed over the years (old age?). I don’t want to try to be perfect anymore. I want to be gross. I want to roll on the ground in a basement in NY trying to make people laugh. I want to dress weird, cut my hair off, make mistakes and not feel like the whole industry is watching. I want my body to truly be mine again, break free from my own judgement. I love this industry so much. I love the people I work with so much. And I know I will see all of you again. Hopefully not in like 2 months, that would be awkward. But life is short and it’s time for new adventures. Adios amigos! See you on the big screen!” Rianne van Rompaey Rianne van Rompaey Could Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy Split With DFS!? Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy (LVMH) may actually part ways with DFS, its struggling duty-free retail arm, after years of losses and a failed sale attempt nearly a decade ago, according to Lauren Sherman’s Line Sheet column for Puck. Speculation surged when CEO Bernard Arnault didn’t deny rumors of a potential sale, signaling that LVMH may be ready to exit a business hit hard by the collapse of international travel. Despite hopes for a post-pandemic rebound, DFS remains deep in the red, losing up to €200 million in 2024, according to La Lettre. Meanwhile, LVMH is doubling down on its Parisian luxury footprint, having taken over DFS’s stake in the iconic La Samaritaine department store. The area, anchored by Louis Vuitton’s headquarters and the glamorous Cheval Blanc hotel, reflects LVMH’s push into premium experiential retail. Should DFS hit the market, it’s likely to attract interest from duty-free specialists ready to revive the brand. [ad_1] India will look to breach fortress Gabba once again. Subhayan Chakraborty in Brisbane The Gabba isn’t the Gabbatoir anymore. Australia have lost two out of the last four matches they’ve played at this iconic venue. The last time they played here, they were blown away by West Indies’ Shamar Joseph with the pink ball. Now, with the ball back to red and the match scheduled in the pre-Christmas phase, where Australia has traditionally dominated on fresher pitches, the series against India stands at 1-1. The Gabba Test could decide the final result. Both India and Australia have their strengths and weaknesses, but by no means are either perfect sides. The batting of both has been inconsistent. Their top players aren’t in the best form. Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja haven’t performed in this series, while Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney, both Queensland locals, got their first taste of runs in Adelaide. For India, Rohit Sharma is out of form, Shubman Gill hasn’t scored big, Rishabh Pant is due for a significant knock, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul haven’t been able to score consistently. On Thursday, the Indian heroes from their last Gabba outing – Gill and Pant – took centre stage at the nets. They interchanged roles, facing throwdowns and a few traveling pacers including Navdeep Saini and Yash Dayal. The last time India played at the Gabba, Gill and Pant, supported by Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, and Washington Sundar, helped the visitors script arguably the greatest Test win in their history. The memories here contrast sharply with those from Adelaide, where India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in the second Test, with the infamous 36 all out from 2020 still fresh in the minds of the players involved. However, at the Gabba, the scenario is the complete opposite. When Gill was asked about revisiting the Gabba almost four years after the historic win, the 25-year-old said, “Definitely very nostalgic when I came here. Just walking through the stadium again after the 2021 win felt very nostalgic. I definitely feel pretty confident playing here.” As the Gabba Test approaches, India have some decisions to make. Will the Gautam Gambhir-led team management support Harshit Rana after he was taken to the cleaners by Travis Head and then faced a barrage of bouncers, or will they give the nod to Akash Deep, who has been impressive at the nets? With plenty of grass on a pitch promising true bounce, Harshit might get another chance to seek redemption and help India take a 2-1 lead. There’s also a question mark on the batting position of captain Rohit Sharma. Will he open, will he bat at No. 6? India also haven’t settled on their sole spinner. Sundar played in Perth but was dropped for Ravichandran Ashwin in Adelaide. Could Ravindra Jadeja be tried at the Gabba? With minimal turn expected and the pitch unlikely to deteriorate much, India might opt for a defensive approach, choosing either Sundar or Jadeja to hold up one end. Both offer batting solidity, which could stabilise India’s crumbling top and middle order. Jadeja was spotted at the nets on the eve of the match, practicing against throwdowns from Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. He appeared in better spirits in Brisbane compared to Perth or Adelaide. Is that a sign? With Gill stating that from now on, India would treat this series as a three-match affair, the Gabba Test will determine who takes the initiative as the series progresses into its latter stages.
