Her Royal Highness the Gyalsem has been named Sonam Yangden Wangchuck.

Sonam is a Bhutanese name denoting merit, longevity and good fortune. The name Yangden, meaning precious jewel, signifies prosperity and wellbeing.

The naming ceremony was held at Tashichhodzong on the anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the Golden Throne in 2006. The ceremony was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo. His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Their Majesties the Queen Mothers and Members of the Royal Family were present for the ceremony.

Punakha Dzong, at the confluence of two rivers, was the venue of the Fifth King of Bhutans Royal Wedding.

This 8 day trip in Bhutan is a combination of cultural tours and trekking. Day 01: Arrival at Bhutan, Paro International Airport

The flight into Bhutan is one of the most interesting Mountain flights in the world, now you will be transfer to the hotel for overnight. You can visit the lifestyle of bhutanes over your free time after a freshup at hotel.

Day 02: Paro Sightseen

After a brief rest and breakfast at morning we will head towards the Ta Dzong, the National museum of Bhutan. After the visit to the Museum we take a short walk to the Rinpung Dzong often described as the fort with heaps of Jewel. Khichu Lhakhang is the next place we visit. It is the oldest monument in the small kingdom of Bhutan. By the late afternoon we reach the Drugyal Dzong (Bhutan Victory Fort) built around the mid 17th century in the memory of the Bhutanese victory over the Tibetan invaders.

Day 03: Excursion to the Tigers Nest

After a warm and nice breakfast served at the hotel we will hike up the 4200 steps to the Tiger’s Nest, locally known as the Taktsang Monastery. This monastery has been the identification of Bhutan since a long time because of its religious significance and also because of its location. The Mahayani Buddhist believes that the first dalai lama, Padmasamvav flied on a back of a tigress to her for Meditation. While coming down we will have lunch at halfway down the hill and continue to Paro.

Day 04: Trek to Jele Dzong

Day 05: Trek to Jangchulakha

We don’t have a long walk after breakfast as we only walk for couple of hours. We climb up and go down  to reach a top of a ridge. Then walk through the forest for an hour before we reach Jangchulakha, situated at an altitude of  from sea level and it is also the highest point of our trek.

Day 06: Trek to Langrithang

We start the day with a short climb to a hill from where you can see the Mt. Jumolhari and neighboiuring peaks. After crossing the ridge we go down through the trail to the Jimilangtsho Lake and make a stop for lunch. We go down further until reaching Langrithang. You will cover almost 14 kilometers interms of distance and walk for little more before reaching Langrithang.

Day 07: Trek to Tsaluna and drive to Thimpu

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I was wondering if the concept of tiaras was present much in the Middle East/Sub-Continent (I was mainly thinking about India)? I've noticed members of the Japanese imperial family wearing tiaras (and obviously European royals) but I can't seem to find any information about 'the space between'

As for India, I haven’t covered any tiaras but they definitely existed.  The royal and princely families had amazing jewels but I don’t know how much of it they’ve managed to hold onto.  I also don’t know very much about the history of jewelry in India but I’m assuming that tiaras weren’t traditional because these are all very western in style.  When I look at the jewels of the Indian princely families, I’m usually more impressed by their other jewelry.  Top row: Maharani of Cooch Behar and Bari Begum Sahiba of Rampur, Bottom row: Maharani of Patiala and Maharani of Jammu and Kashmir

Some nearby countries also have/had royal families who wore tiaras like

Afghanistan - Queen Soraya seems like a really awesome person and did a lot of great things for women’s rights and education but the British government conspired against her so her and her husband were forced into exile in 1929.

Bhutan - I haven’t been able to find any pictures of the Bhutanese royal women wearing tiaras before Queen Jetsun Pema.  I really love that her jewelry, while still being made of precious materials, doesn’t usually include diamonds.  The gold and opaque stones like jade and turquoise suit her extremely well and I find I don’t even miss the sparkle.

I hope to cover more non-European tiaras in the future but it’s always a struggle to find enough information and pictures.  I’m deep into researching some Southeast Asian tiaras right now so expect more posts about them.  Malaysia in particular has a ton of tiara events still and they have nine royal families so there are always plenty of tiaras but it’s nearly impossible to find any information.  Since there are so many I struggle to figure out who each person is and how they are related to everyone else to try to figure out how a tiara may have moved through the family.

I like to cover these tiaras because they aren’t as well know as the European ones but they can cause a strong reaction in people.  I inevitably get comments about how the tiaras look tacky especially the ones from Iran and Brunei but just because they aren’t designed like people are used to doesn’t mean they are bad.  Different cultures just prefer different design aesthetics and I think it’s good to be exposed to that.
