Maharani Jind Kaur
Maharani Jind Kaur, also known as Rani Jindan, was a significant figure in Sikh history, serving as the last queen of the Sikh Empire from 1843 to 1846. Born in 1817 in Gujranwala, she became the youngest wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire. After Ranjit Singh's death in 1839, Jind Kaur took on the role of regent for her son, Maharaja Duleep Singh. Jind Kaur's reign as regent was marked by political turmoil and conflict with the British East India Company. In 1845, during the First Anglo-Sikh War, she dispatched the Sikh Army to confront the British, leading to the annexation of the entire Punjab in 1849. After her son's dethronement, she faced imprisonment and exile by the British. Despite challenges, Jind Kaur escaped captivity in 1849, disguising herself as a slave girl and finding refuge in Nepal. Her efforts to resist British dominance continued through correspondence with rebels in Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir. She later reunited with her son in Calcutta in 1861, influencing him to return to Sikhism. Jind Kaur's exile took a toll on her health, and she passed away in her sleep on August 1, 1863, in Kensington, England. Denied the opportunity to be cremated in Punjab, her ashes were eventually brought back to India in 1924 and reburied in the Samadhi of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore. Despite her challenging life and exile, Maharani Jind Kaur's legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and resistance against colonial rule. In 2009, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Kensal Green Dissenters Chapel, honouring her contributions to Sikh history.

TOP 3 TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN GULMARG
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But during winters, Gulmarg gets totally covered under snow and thus sets the stage for skiing and polar golf. Very few Indian hill stations cater to high altitude sports infrastructure which makes Gulmarg one of the top winter sports destinations of India.
Here are some of the Top 3 Tourist destinations in gulmarg which are frequented by tourists.
Tumblr media
Maharani Temple of Gulmarg: This temple was constructed by the Dogra Dynasty during medieval period and is situated at the heart of the valley, on top a small hillock. It is garlanded with a beautiful yellow coloured flower from which the valley gets its name. This is the temple which also features in the 1974 Bollywood blockbuster ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ movie’s Burman melody “Jay Jay Shiv Shankar/ Kaanta lagena kankar/ Ke pyaala tere naam ka piya…”
Tumblr media
The valley wears different looks with the change is seasons but there is not a single day when Gulmarg loses its appeal. That is why natives often say, “Gulmarg ka mausam aur Bambai ka fashion ka koi bharosa nahi. Kabhi bhi badal sakta hain.” Meaning, Gulmarg’s weather and Mumbai’s fashion are so vulnerable that either can change anytime. There is a romantic intoxication in its air which will make you fall in love with this slice of paradise at your first step.
Tumblr media
Kongdoori: It is a snow laden high hill destination in the Kashmir valley with an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level. There are two basecamps at Khillanmarg — Kongdoori and Mary’s Shoulder on way to the Apharwat Peak. Both are considered as the ultimate ski points of India which receive thousands of international footfalls during winter. Kongdoori can be easily visited from Gulmarg over a day’s trek or on horseback. We chose the latter. It took us exactly two hours to cover the 2000 feet gradual ascent from Gulmarg to the Gondola point along the mountain slopes. There were two stages of the Gondola — the first stage (approx. 600 meters) transfers from Gulmarg to Kongdoori station in about 9 minutes and the next stage to Mary’s Shoulder. We were at Kongdoori by quarter past twelve.
Tumblr media
Mary’s Shoulder: This is the second basecamp, approx. 1 kilometer up from Kongdoori and it can be reached in about 12 minutes by Gondola stage one. The area beyond line of control falls under Pakistan, locally popular as Azaad (independent) Kashmir. The initial operations had started way back in 1998 but the second stage was opened to public only in 2005. A medical test needs to be done to set for the final trail as many first time skiers require additional oxygen at the Apharwat Peak (approx. 14,000 feet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Way back, we flew over the Gaddi huts when I saw a little girl waving at our Gondola cabin. As I waved back, her golden smile concluded our Khillanmarg trek with cherished memories. It took us almost the entire day to acclimatize to the high hill meteorological conditions. Evening temperature declined probably to sub-zero. Dinner was ordered by seven from the in-house restaurant. Early retirement was much needed to gear up for tomorrow’s return trip to Srinagar.
Reetwika’s Travel Tip: For detailed information about the Top 3 Tourist destinations in gulmarg, visit the individual articles available in Tours and Journeys under Jammu & Kashmir category.

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I was wondering if the concept of tiaras was present much in the Middle East/Sub-Continent (I was mainly thinking about India)? I've noticed members of the Japanese imperial family wearing tiaras (and obviously European royals) but I can't seem to find any information about 'the space between'
Yes!  Many royals from ‘the space between’ wore tiaras.  I’m going to link to the tags for some MENA and Asian countries so you can see the tiaras I’ve covered from each one.
Bhutan
Brunei
China
Egypt
Iran
Japan
Jordan
Malaysia
Morocco
Thailand
Vietnam
As for India, I haven’t covered any tiaras but they definitely existed.  The royal and princely families had amazing jewels but I don’t know how much of it they’ve managed to hold onto.  I also don’t know very much about the history of jewelry in India but I’m assuming that tiaras weren’t traditional because these are all very western in style.  When I look at the jewels of the Indian princely families, I’m usually more impressed by their other jewelry.  Top row: Maharani of Cooch Behar and Bari Begum Sahiba of Rampur, Bottom row: Maharani of Patiala and Maharani of Jammu and Kashmir
Tumblr media
Some nearby countries also have/had royal families who wore tiaras like
Afghanistan - Queen Soraya seems like a really awesome person and did a lot of great things for women’s rights and education but the British government conspired against her so her and her husband were forced into exile in 1929.
Tumblr media
Bhutan - I haven’t been able to find any pictures of the Bhutanese royal women wearing tiaras before Queen Jetsun Pema.  I really love that her jewelry, while still being made of precious materials, doesn’t usually include diamonds.  The gold and opaque stones like jade and turquoise suit her extremely well and I find I don’t even miss the sparkle.
Tumblr media
Nepal - I always forget how recently Nepal was a monarchy.  It was only abolished in 2008. Top row: Princess Rama, Queen Ratna, Queen Ratna, Queen Aishwarya. Bottom row: Queen Aishwarya, Queen Komal, Princess Prearana, Crown Princess Himani
Tumblr media
I hope to cover more non-European tiaras in the future but it’s always a struggle to find enough information and pictures.  I’m deep into researching some Southeast Asian tiaras right now so expect more posts about them.  Malaysia in particular has a ton of tiara events still and they have nine royal families so there are always plenty of tiaras but it’s nearly impossible to find any information.  Since there are so many I struggle to figure out who each person is and how they are related to everyone else to try to figure out how a tiara may have moved through the family.
I like to cover these tiaras because they aren’t as well know as the European ones but they can cause a strong reaction in people.  I inevitably get comments about how the tiaras look tacky especially the ones from Iran and Brunei but just because they aren’t designed like people are used to doesn’t mean they are bad.  Different cultures just prefer different design aesthetics and I think it’s good to be exposed to that.
