1993 - Shannen Doherty portrayed by Michael Comte for the November 1993 issue of Vanity Fair.
Brat on a Hot Tin Roof (Part 2)
Seeing the error of her ways, she moved home and landed the part of Brenda Walsh, the archetypal high-schooler at the center of Beverly Hills, 90210. The show wasn’t a sensation until its second season, and Shannen kept a fairly low social profile. Although it’s been denied, she allegedly had a brief affair with co-star Jason Priestley, who plays her twin brother, Brandon. Then she met Chris Foufas, the only ex-fiancé she still loves.
“She was going out with my best friend,’’ recalls Foufas, who lives in Chicago, where he owns and runs an upscale health club. When Shannen and her boyfriend started fighting, Foufas took her to dinner and they stayed together for a year and a half, a longevity record for Shannen. Foufas comes from a wealthy family ("I had a Porsche when I was 16,” he reports). His father is in the real-estate and casino businesses, and his family has houses in New York, Chicago, and Aspen. ‘‘Shannen wants to be with rich people,’’ says an ex-confidant. ‘She wants that life. Chris was part of that and she loved it.”
By all accounts, they were a good match. "She knew what I was thinking,”’ he says, ‘‘and I could calm her down when she’d get upset. I'd say, ‘Hold your breath. Count to three,' and that seemed to work. But then the show happened and she was one of the 10 sexiest girls in the world. All of a sudden, a big wave hit.”’
Foufas was smitten. One night, before they got into bed, he dropped to one knee and proposed. ‘‘She was sulking because I hadn’t asked her the night before,” he recalls. “‘So I put the ring box on the pillow next to her. She started freaking out when she saw the diamond, saying, ‘This is a big sucker.' ”’
Foufas began commuting between Chicago and Beverly Hills, where they rented a house together. 90210 was becoming huge, and Shannen was growing increasingly restless. Foufas started hearing stories: she was out all night at clubs like Roxbury; she was hanging out with a singer named Scott. When he confronted her, she was defensive. " 'I was considered ugly as a little kid,' ” Foufas remembers her saying. ‘‘ ‘And now I'm considered beautiful.’ She didn’t want to be engaged. She wanted to be out till four A.M. and see all the guys. But she didn’t want to lose me, either.”’
It all unraveled in June of 1992. Foufas was in Chicago and Shannen told him she wanted to throw a party for Scott and his band. He said, O.K., something small, like 10 people. But the next day, according to Foufas, the actress Lara Flynn Boyle called his younger brother and told him that she’d been at a huge bash at Shannen’s and that she was waltzing about with a guy, this singer, introducing him as her new boyfriend.
Foufas got on the next flight to L.A. He went straight to their house, which was trashed. Shannen wasn’t there. "When she came back, we sat down and had a conversation,” Foufas says. ‘‘All of a sudden, she charged at me and went to hit me. I pushed her away and she flew. She said, ‘You hit me! You hit me!' She called the police, but when they came, she said, ‘Forget it.’
“There was a change in her,”” Foufas says. ‘‘It was Shannen in charge now. She had fame. She had money. People kowtowed to her. And she liked it. A lot.”
That night, Foufas stayed at the Beverly Hills Hotel (‘I'm on a first-name basis there’’), but couldn’t sleep. There was an earthquake, and he became concerned about Shannen and their four dogs. He called the house, but there was no answer. He drove over, but she wasn’t home.
He didn’t reach her until the next day. ‘“‘She said she was at a girlfriend’s,”’ says Foufas, still sounding sad. ‘‘But she was at Scott’s. She was lying to me. And I was believing it because I loved the girl. There was lots of crying. I said I didn’t want to be with her unless it was going to be me and only me. She said she wanted that, too. And I believed her.”’
That night when she didn’t call, Foufas drove to the house, found the engagement ring, and took it back. ‘‘I was devastated,” he says. ‘‘I couldn’t sleep. I fell apart.”
Shannen didn’t go away quietly; she was furious. She called and called Foufas in Chicago, and in October 1992 she became particularly frantic. She had decided to get breast implants. ‘‘She was scared out of her guts,”’ Foufas recalls. "I tried to talk her out of it. I told her she had nice boobs. I said, ‘You just want to go to bars and say, 'Guys, look what I got!' ”
But he flew to L.A. anyway. He stayed for the operation and thought about getting back together with her, but realized Scott was still in the picture. ‘‘Look,’” he says, "I loved the girl. I can’t explain it exactly. She’s a great girl. She just has this side to her. She can do whatever she wants, fuck everyone else. She doesn’t really care.”’
He pauses. ‘‘She has all my stuff,” he says finally. ‘‘My big-screen TV. My glass refrigerator. My pinball machine. My bed. If you talk to her, tell her I want my stuff back. O.K.?”’
Tumblr media
Is a sunny Saturday and Shannen is giving a tour of her new house. She is wearing loose navy palazzo pants, a sleeveless white linen shirt that keeps coming unbuttoned, and her omnipresent motorcycle boots. Her hair is pinned up in a loose bun. The look is half geisha, half biker. “Welcome to my home,’’ she says, standing in her gravel driveway.
She’s been unpacking—she moved in two days ago with her two dogs, a golden retriever named Sally and a black Lab named Penelope. “Yesterday, I just wanted to light it all on fire,’’ she says, clomping into the living room. "Or just throw everything out and start over. It’s the most hellish thing to move.”’
For hating it so much, she’s remarkably nomadic. In the last four years, she’s moved at least eight times. ‘‘I get very antsy,’’ she explains. ‘‘I don’t like to be in one place for too long. But I settle in each time. I do like a house to be a home.”
Her taste runs toward the Gothic: her large living room is filled with overstuffed velvet chairs and sofas. Enormous Art Nouveau posters are leaning against the walls, waiting to be hung. The glass coffee table is covered with flowers which Shannen ordered from the Four Seasons’ florist. She spent last night on the sofa because the mattress for her bed hasn’t arrived. ‘‘It’s a custom European square,’ she explains. ‘“You have to order it.”’
This furniture is expensive—the girl knows her antiques. ‘“What do you think of these?’’ she asks. ‘‘They’re neoclassic French,’ she continues, rubbing the frame of a chair. ‘‘I got them for nothing.”
She walks to the kitchen and opens the refrigerator. The contents are: a bottle of Evian, a carton of milk, one Heineken beer, and a bottle of Cristal champagne. “I"d offer you some food,” she says, “but I don’t think I have any.’’ There is kitchen stuff everywhere waiting to be unpacked and, for some reason, Madonna’s book, Sex, still in its Mylar wrapper, perched on the counter. ‘‘I never even read it,” Shannen says, looking overwhelmed by the mess. ‘‘I hate moving.”’
She goes over to the couch and stares through the sliding glass window at her pool. “‘I am happy in this house,”’ she decides, sitting down. ‘““And I'm very much now into making myself happy, before I can make everybody else happy.’’
This is the new Shannen, the post-Dean, stay-at-home, centered Shannen. In other words, Shannen circa Judd Nelson. “‘Judd’s the most intelligent man you could ever encounter,’ she says. “There’s so much to learn from him." (However, Shannen didn’t last long with Judd—in late September, she married 19-year-old Ashley Hamilton, son of the perpetually tan George. The happy couple had known each other only three weeks.)
Tumblr media
And yet, and yet… Dean Factor is still on her mind. ‘‘He’s a menace to women,’’ she states emphatically. ‘‘He breaks down everything that women have worked hard for. To be treated as equals. When a man hits you, you're not an equal. Obviously.” Shannen is excited now. ‘“You know, this goes back to this whole thing of trying to put the blame on me. Why did he hit me? He hit me because I drove him to that point. I infuriated him. I made him angry. Well, why did I make him angry? Because he would try and push my buttons and I wouldn’t necessarily have the reaction he thought I would have.”’
The Dean-Shannen cataclysm is an extreme case of he said/she said. Clearly, their relationship was volatile from the jump. ‘‘She would insult him in public," says one Factor friend. ‘‘She was rude and hostile. I remember him once throwing her in the pool and saying, ‘You need to cool off.' ” “‘I believe Dean,” says Chris Foufas. ‘‘She probably did it. He probably deserved it.”’
They met, through friends, in 1990. Factor is related to the Max Factor family, the cosmetic-company millionaires, and he is a fixture in L.A. hot spots. Dean and his brother Davis, a photographer, own and run SmashBox, the most successful photo studio in Los Angeles. Dean and Shannen went out briefly. She felt he was leading her on. ‘‘Then he broke up with me,”’ she recalls. “That should have tipped me off to the type of person he was, but it didn’t.”
They met up again, and, as often happens with Shannen, it became very serious very quickly. She claims the mental abuse began soon afterward. ‘‘I was incredibly insecure,’’ she says. ‘‘He made me believe I was unattractive, that nobody else would be with me. And I believed all the bad things about myself he accused me of being. I was extremely lost. I'd never been in something this abusive.”’ (Factor suggests nothing anyone said could have made Shannen more insecure than she already was.)
And then there were the physical battles. The incident Shannen refers to most involves a time when she and Dean were driving in her Mercedes. He felt she was driving too fast and punched her. ‘‘Was I driving too fast?”’ she asks now. "No. Do I always drive a little fast? Yes. It’s probably why I've had my license suspended a few times. Does he know that? Yes. But do you punch somebody, not in the arm, but do you punch them full on, as hard as you possibly can, in the breast, to make them stop the car? No. And when they get out of the car, do you slap them in the face? No, you don’t do that. But that is what he did to me.”’
The final blow came in Hawaii. ‘‘Do you go to Hawaii with your girlfriend, tell her she’s no better than any of your ex-girlfriends, and then, when she tries to leave, slap her in the face, throw her down on the ground so she has a huge cut on her eye, and then take her by the hair and drag her across the rug so she has a huge bruise on her knee? I have a scar on my knee that will never go away.” She lifts up her pant leg to show her knee. “See?” she says, pointing to a faint mark. "That will never go away.”
The day before the alleged incident in Hawaii, Shannen had accepted Factor’s proposal of marriage. ‘‘It was very romantic,” she explains, as if this all makes sense. ‘‘But when I said ‘Yes,’ I knew I would never marry this person."
But she wore his ring, another large diamond. And she told people—her parents, her friend Tori Spelling—that she and Dean were officially engaged. A week later, she met Judd Nelson on the set of Blindfold, and they started an affair and Dean became a problem.
‘‘At the beginning of Blindfold,” she says, ‘‘there was no love for this person anymore. The only thing left was, really, fear. Fear and hate. And he started getting jealous that the film was taking up so much of my time. Dean repeatedly hid my keys from me so I would be late. He would lock himself in the bathroom, where my script was and my keys were, so I would be late for work. That’s when it really hit me, when it started affecting my career. I thought, That is wrong.” (Factor admits locking himself in the bathroom once, because he was "weary of the verbal assaults.’”)
The next big incident occurred after she moved into the Four Seasons. She went back to their house to pack up some of her stuff, and things got heated. She claims he closed a car door on her legs and she went nuts. "I snapped,” she recalls, admitting to her only act of nonvictim behavior. “‘In self-defense, I slapped him back and I kicked him in the leg. And that’s about all I did. But he wouldn’t let me go. And if somebody has both your arms and they’re hitting you, it’s like, well, what can you do? You can kick them. And you can try and hit them. And then you can try and run. The minute he released me, I did not hang around to beat him up. I jumped in my car and left. But no, no. I never tried to run over Dean, which is what he says. I am not a psychotic person.”’
Factor had large bruises on his legs and arms (which the police later photographed), and he says he was terrified. Afraid enough to file for a restraining order against Shannen. She found out about the order when she got back from Dallas, where she had gone for a few days with Judd. That trip itself was not without incident: Nelson was accused of "kicking a woman in the head’’ while he and Shannen were dining in a local restaurant. According to the newspaper account, Judd, who claims the kick was accidental, was enraged by the woman’s remarks regarding his floundering career.
When they returned, Shannen was horrified: the restraining order meant she couldn’t get her clothes, her furniture, anything in the house. ‘‘It went from me being the victim to me being the accused," she says, still outraged.
Lawyers were hired all around and statements were taken. Oddly enough, Shannen’s seem to have disappeared. “‘Somehow all that paperwork got mixed up,”’ she says. ‘‘My statement was never really put on the record. Even though I made it. And even though I signed it. Nothing was ever done with it.”’ She pauses, adopting her favorite pose, the embattled young star. ‘‘It comes down to a thing about a young actress who’s had a little bad press,” she says. ‘“They try and make an example of you. You know?’
She looks around her living room. "But I did get everything back,’’ she says, surveying her possessions. ‘‘His home is now completely empty. . . . Do you understand how trashed this place is going to get when I really unpack? It’s going to be completely mad. My mom is coming over, thank God, to clean. She’s brilliant at it. And she loves doing it. When Dean and I moved in together, Dean and I…” Her voice trails off. ‘‘I’ve got to stop doing that. I mean, enough.”
Tumblr media
Dean Factor and his lawyer, Edwin Lasman, of Fowler & Lasman, are sitting in the conference room at the firm’s 19th-floor office in Century City. Factor is wearing jeans and a T-shirt, and he is very tan. He is remarkably calm considering Shannen’s accusations of mental and physical abuse. ‘‘Dean is a big sweet guy,’’ says a friend. ‘‘He’s as dangerous as a pat of butter.”
Factor stands by his story—that she pulled a gun on him, that she tried to run him over with the car, that he struck her only in self-defense, and the rest. He does, however, want to explain why he stayed with her, why he wanted to marry her. “‘It’s perplexing,’’ he admits. “‘After the gun incident, she called my mother on the phone. She said she was so sorry, that she wanted to seek therapy. And I asked her, a few days later, when she was going to see the therapist, and she said she wasn’t. She said, ‘I lied.’ But then she’d be really sweet and everything was fine. Then something would just snap.”’
Shannen denies that she apologized for the gun incident, which she claims never happened. She also maintains that she never said she’d seek therapy.
“I’m a very understanding person,’’ Factor continues. ‘‘And Shannen’s not that bad. I don’t think. Inside. I just think there’s a lot of external factors. . . .Let’s say I had rejected her and hurt her until she was going crazy. You know? But I don’t think it’s a malicious kind of thing.”’
And yet he did file a complaint, and he claims to still be scared. "I'm afraid I'll come home and Shannen will be in the driveway. And who knows what will happen?" He pauses. "I'd really just like to move on with my life. I don’t really understand any of this. It just. . . unraveled."

Buyers Agent In Ukrainian Village: A Lifeline For Homeowners
Whether looking to sell a home or buy a house, first-time home buyers working with a real estate agent can be assured that their interests are properly represented. Here are some of the important areas in which buyers agent in Ukrainian villages help their clients succeed with their real estate goals.
Help With The Paperwork
Tumblr media
With some real estate contracts extending to more than five or six pages in length, comprehending each and every provision can take hours for the average person, and that is even with utilizing internet research. In contrast, a real estate agent who has been preparing and reading property disclosure forms, real estate offer contracts, inspection reports, appraisal reports, and much more is accustomed to the world of properties and has an adequate understanding of what terms in the contract signify.
If some custom language is needed for a particular contract, the buyers agent in Ukrainian village has instant access to legal resources to make sure the language is written accurately. Inappropriate contract language can quickly turn expensive.
The Merits Outweigh The Costs
While some home buyers and sellers may be willing to proceed on their own with a real estate purchase or sale, most do not know how to go ahead with buying or selling a home. At times, there are local real estate attorneys who can assist with contract judgment and maybe even contract bargaining, but for the most part, they will not be maestros in knowing about homes in and around certain areas that buyers may be inclined toward. Real estate agents are generally always checking contracts that have been drafted by an attorney at some point in time, and they know how to draft or review a real estate offer.
The time spent for the unaware buyer or seller to learn about what may be a once-in-a-lifetime transaction is probably not worth it in the end. Usually, the sale by the owner also ends up leaving money on the table by not correctly pricing their home to its full potential, by not negotiating effectively, or by some other issue where an agent would have proceeded differently. As a result, working with a listing agent in Beverly, Chicago, makes financial sense.
How Buyers Agent In Ukrainian Village Can Save Money?
Where time is money, then the real estate agent’s expertise to handle things much quicker and more effectively than an amateur buyer or seller could handle on their own. Hiring a real estate agent gives buyers or sellers more time to do other things, and ultimately, they save a lot of time in the whole transaction. As noted above, with all the haggling that is an inevitable part of buying and selling real estate, the time (and convenience added) saved by having an agent is precious.
Money is also saved when the real estate agents ensure timelines are adhered to, as missed timelines can mean being bound to buy a house with problems like not being repaired or completely missing the opportunity of buying the perfect dream house because they could not close on time.
Looking for a trustworthy, experienced, and reputed real estate broker in Wicker Park? Well, Quentin Green Real Estate Services is what many homeowners have chosen over the years. Refer to them before making any real estate decisions.

Shannen Gets Real
By Kevin Koffler. Photos by Wayne Stambler.
The star of TV's coolest show, Beverly Hills, 90210, claims she's just a normal twenty-year-old girl. Call us suspicious, but we had to find out what Shannen Doherty is really like.
Somehow the world has gotten out that Beverly Hills, 90210, is filming on location at the Palace Costume Company in Hollywood. By 4:00 in the afternoon, the place is surrounded by fans. Each time someone opens the shop's door and walks outside, heads crane for a look and a murmur rises up from the crowd.
Inside, however, the athmosphere is far from glamorous. Sweating in ninety-degree heat, Shannen Doherty and her castmates patiently shoot a scene over and over for an upcomig episode. Dressed in a tweed jacket, T-shirt, jeans, and cowboy boots, Shannen isn't as lucky as her TV boyfriend, Luke Perry, who gets to walk around without a shirt on.
Tumblr media
When the director finally gets what he wants, the cast and crew break for lunch, and Shannen slips out the back door. While walking to her trailer she's spotted by a group of kids, who chase her down the street yelling, "Brenda, Brenda." A security guard intervenes just before she gets to her door, and once inside, shetakes a deep breath. "I have to deal with that every day," she explains. "It's all part of the job, but I'll never get used to it. I'm just this girl from Memphis, Tennessee, who wanted to be an actress." She sighs. "When I was ten I thouht it would be really cool for everyone to know my name. Now, in a way, it's overwhelming."
Although her fame is relatively new, Shannen's been acting since she was ten on various TV series. But people probably recognize her best as Heather Duke from the black comedy film Heathers.
On 90210, Shannen plays Brenda Walsh, a conservative midwestern girl who has been transplanted to the glitzy, glamorous world of Beverly Hills, California. "Brenda and I have little in common besides obvious things like the way we dress and our taste in boyfriends," Shannen says. Although she stresses that the cast members work well together, Shannen doesn't go so far as to say that they're all goodfriends. "I think everyone on the show has his or her problems," she says cautiously. "If I said I got along with everyone on the set, I'd be lying. Our relationships are created by our writer's imaginations, not by real life. It's funny because I'll go out and people will wask me, 'Hey, where's Dylan?' And I'll think, Dylan who?"
Tumblr media
Of all of her coworkers, Shannen is closest to Jason Priestley, who plays her brother, Brandon. "We're very close," she says, smiling. "Weconfide in each other and look up to each other as actors. Even if we fight, which is rare, it's like a real-life brother/sister fight, and we make up really fast."
Offscreen, her closest confidant is her boyfriend, Chris, who sells real estate in Chicago. "Chris is my dream guy," she confides. "In a world that's not old-fashioned anymore, he is a real gentleman. I know that if the series or my career failed, Chris would still be there for me,and I would still be a happy person."
Since Shannen lives in Los Angeles and Chris lives in Chicago, they spend a lot fo time commuting, which is just fine with Shannen, who loves shopping for clothes in different cities. "I love men's clothing–big shirts and blazers," she says. "Armani is one of my favourite stores. In L.A. I shop at Fred Segal. In Chicago I go to Henri Bendel. And in New York I like Charivari. I haven't been to Paris yet, but just wait!"
Tumblr media
Beside being in love and mulling over future projects, shannen is looking for a new house in Beverly Hills. She is also looking for a rottweiler for Chris. She owns three dogs–a black Labrador, a chocolate Labrador, and a golden retriever.
"My life is pretty wonderful now," she concludes. "The bottom line for me is that all the trappings are nice, but I'm not acting for the money or the fame–I'm doing it because I love to act. A fortune-teller once told me to follow my heart, come from a place of love, and all of my dreams would come true. I remind myself of that advice every orning, and so far it has never led me astray."

Julie Adams (born Betty May Adams; October 17, 1926 – February 3, 2019) was an American actress, billed as Julia Adams toward the beginning of her career, primarily known for her numerous television guest roles. She starred in a number of films in the 1950s, including Bend of the River (1952) opposite James Stewart and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). She was also known for her small screen role as Paula Denning on the 1980s soap opera Capitol and recurring role of Eve Simpson on Murder, She Wrote.
Julie Adams was born as Betty May Adams on October 17, 1926 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Arkansas-born parents Esther Gertrude (Beckett) and Ralph Adams, who was a cotton buyer. Her family moved a great deal; the longest she lived in one town was eight years in Blytheville, Arkansas. In 1946, at the age of 19, she was crowned "Miss Little Rock" and then moved to Hollywood, California to pursue her acting career. Adams worked as a part-time secretary and began her film career in B movie westerns.
She used her real name until 1949, when she began working for Universal-International, the same studio where she met future stars such as James Best, Piper Laurie, Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis. She then became "Julia" and eventually "Julie". In 1954, she explained the latter change, "The studio picked Julia, but I never have felt comfortable with it. I just like the name Julie better, and the studio has given me permission to make the change."
Her first movie role was a minor part in Red, Hot and Blue (1949), followed by a leading role in the Lippert western The Dalton Gang (1949). Adams was featured as the bathing beauty Kay Lawrence in the science-fiction film Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).
Adams co-starred in 1950s films opposite some of Hollywood's top leading men, including with James Stewart in 1952's Bend of the River, with Rock Hudson in The Lawless Breed (1953) and One Desire (1955), with Tyrone Power in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), with Glenn Ford in The Man from the Alamo (1953), with Charlton Heston in The Private War of Major Benson (1955), with Dan Duryea in Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (1957) and with Joel McCrea in The Gunfight at Dodge City (1959).
Adams co-starred with Rory Calhoun, known for his role in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), in the film The Looters (1955), the story of a plane crash in the Rocky Mountains. Part of the picture was filmed about Tarryall Creek at what is now Eleven Mile State Park in Park County in central Colorado. The advertising poster reads: "Five desperate men ... and a girl who didn't care ... trapped on a mountain of gale-lashed rock!"
Adams also starred in 1957's Four Girls in Town, a romantic comedy about four young women competing for the leading role in a new movie, featuring an international cast. She appeared with Elvis Presley in the musical-comedy Tickle Me (1965). Adams thought highly of her co-star, noting: "Despite his status as a superstar singer and stage performer, Elvis took his acting very seriously. He was always prepared, and did a good job in the roles he was given. When he did his musical numbers in Tickle Me, sometimes walking from table to table in a nightclub set, he did them perfectly in one take."
On television, Adams appeared on The Andy Griffith Show portraying Mary Simpson, a county nurse and romantic interest of Sheriff Andy Taylor in a 1962 episode. She also made four guest appearances on Perry Mason, perhaps the most notable being the 1963 episode, "The Case of the Deadly Verdict," when she played Janice Barton, Mason's only convicted client during the show's nine-year run on CBS. In 1963, she starred in "The Case Of Lovers Leap.” In 1964, she played Janice Blake in "The Case of the Missing Button." In 1965, she played the role of defendant Pat Kean in "The Case of the Fatal Fortune." Adams appeared on The Rifleman as a dubious vixen and romantic interest of lead character Chuck Connors. She guest-starred in five episodes of 77 Sunset Strip, three ofAlfred Hitchcock Presents, and two ofMaverick.
More guest-star roles in popular television series followed, including One Step Beyond, McMillan & Wife, Police Woman, The Streets of San Francisco, The Incredible Hulk, Cannon, Quincy, M.E., and Cagney & Lacey. Adams co-starred with James Stewart in The Jimmy Stewart Show on NBC in 1971-1972. Stewart played a professor, and Adams played his wife. She was cast in the recurring role of real estate agent Eve Simpson for ten episodes of CBS's Murder, She Wrote.
Adams, along with her son, Mitchell, authored a book on her life and career, The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections From The Black Lagoon, which was published in 2011. A limited test print run of 100 copies with an interview DVD of the audio book version was completed. Her son served as producer.
Adams joined three other cast members from Creature from the Black Lagoon for a 50th anniversary celebration of the film at Creaturefest in November 2003. The festival was held at Wakulla Springs, just south of Tallahassee, Florida, where underwater scenes were filmed in 1953.
In August 2012, she was a guest of honor at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention held at the Shrine Auditorium. (She attended the same convention in May 2012.) She also appeared at the CineCon Classic Film Festival on August 31, 2012 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel. She was a scheduled guest at The Hollywood Show in Chicago from September 7–9, 2012. An additional book signing was held at Century Books in Pasadena, California, on September 20, 2012. On October 13, 2012, she was back in Berwyn, Illinois for a book signing party.
In October 2012, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected Creature from the Black Lagoon as one of 13 classic horror films to screen to honor the 100th anniversary of Universal Pictures. The film was shown (in 3D format) on October 16 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California. After the screening, Adams appeared on stage for a Q&A session where she shared personal memories of her role in the film, as well as several other career projects on which she had worked.
Adams was married to screenwriter Leonard B. Stern from 1950/1951 to 1953. She was then married to actor-director Ray Danton from 1954 until their divorce in 1981. They had two sons: Steven Danton (b. 1956), an assistant director, and Mitchell Danton (b. 1962), an editor.
Adams died on February 3, 2019 in Los Angeles, California, aged 92. She is survived by her two sons. Her remains are buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Malvern, Arkansas.
In 1999, Adams received a Golden Boot award for her work in Westerns. She was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in 2000. At CineCon in 2011, Adams was honored with a Film Career Achievement Award. In 2012, she won the Rondo Award for the Monster Kid Hall of Fame at the annual Wonderfest in Louisville, Kentucky.

Carmel Cliff House in California
Jul 12, 2021
Two California Stars: Kim Novak & Her Carmel Cliff House!
California’s Carmel Cliff House is For Sale – priced at $12.5 million!
Location: California, USA
Source: TopTenRealEstateDeals.com
Well known for her starring roles in the award-winning films Picnic, Strangers When We Meet, Pal Joey, and her twin roles in Vertigo, Kim Novak chose a shorter film career, but the movies she made have become classics enjoyed as much today by movie buffs as when they were released in the 1950s and ‘60s. Preferring a quiet lifestyle, in 1961 Kim chose a home far away from Hollywood on an outcropping of rock in Carmel, California where she lived until 1973. The home is now for sale, priced at $12.5 million.
One of California’s most interesting homes, the main and guest homes, with two bedrooms and 2,070 square feet, are set on two acres of rocky coastline dramatically perched over the ocean waves with unobstructed views to the horizon. The home has several roof levels, designed as a cozy escape with wood-beamed ceilings, slate floor, wood-burning fireplace, and ceiling-to-floor walls of glass to capture the rock-and-water views. There is an abundance of nature to enjoy watching from migrating whales and playful otters to pelicans soaring close to the water searching for their next fish dinner.
Kim wasn’t the typical movie star. In her mid-30s, Kim semi-retired from acting to focus on her talent for drawing and painting and to escape the artificial Hollywood environment. During this time, she painted, wrote poetry and song lyrics. Her lyrics were so good that they were used by both Harry Belafonte and the Kingston Trio. She made a few short forays back into acting with her last major film in 1969, The Great Train Robbery.
Born in Chicago, Kim, who is now 88, spent most of her adult life in California after a college gig touring the country as a trade show model, “Miss Deepfreeze,” for an L.A. refrigerator manufacturer, which led to the start of her film career. In addition to Carmel, Kim also lived in another of California’s prettiest areas, Big Sur, where she raised horses. In the late 1990s, Novak bought a ranch on the Rogue River in Oregon with her veterinarian husband. Though he died several years ago, she still lives there and still rides her horse and enjoys her art.
Carmel has been a celebrity hotspot since the early years of Hollywood, well known for its charming village and picturesque houses. Longtime-resident Doris Day made sure the town was pet friendly, and dogs are welcomed almost everywhere their masters are. Carmel has been either the home or preferred getaway for Clint Eastwood, who was Carmel mayor twice and owns a restaurant there, John Steinbeck, Salvadore Dali, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Jobs, Joan Baez and Jack London.
As enchanting as the existing structures are, planning has been approved to build a 4,300-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath main house on the site should a potential buyer need a larger retreat for family and guests.
The listing agent for Kim Novak’s former home is Jonathan Spencer of Jonathan Spencer Properties, Carmel.

The Greatest Travel Movies Of All Time
There’s something special about a great travel movie that can make a person want to hit the road in search of adventure. If you’re in the mood for a travel movie that will change your life or just give you a long night of laughs, check out the ones on this list. Be warned, there are plenty of spoilers ahead.
The Beach
Director: Danny Boyle
Year: 2000
Notable Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel York, Virginie Ledoyen
Tumblr media
Originally a novel written by Alex Garland, the movie version of The Beach managed to maintain most of the story’s shiftlessness, paranoia, and struggle for authenticity.
It’s primarily a movie about people searching for a place in the world that hasn’t already been over-crowded by tourists. Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) gets a map from a deranged person at a seedy Bangkok hotel. The map promises exactly what Richard has been searching for: a place unspoiled by humans.
When he and a few friends find the hidden island, they discover that it’s almost Eden… except for the heavily armed pot growers who barely tolerate the beach-living hippies.
The Beach does more than give viewers the thrill of travel. It questions what we expect to get out of travel and whether that thrill still exists in a well-mapped world. You can watch The Beach for free at 123movies here.
Easy Rider
Director: Dennis Hopper
Year: 1969
Notable Actors: Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda
Tumblr media
Easy Rider explores the American cultural landscape during the 1960s. The story follows Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper), two nonconformists willing to give anything a try as they ride their motorcycles from Southern California to New Orleans.
Along the way, they encounter all types of people, including communal hippies who spend their days smoking pot and living freely, rednecks who harass them, and a hard-drinking lawyer who gets them out of a small town jail.
By the movie’s end, it’s obvious that living free means living on the razor’s edge, a place where you can die at any moment.
National Lampoon’s Vacation
Director: Harold Ramis
Year: 1983
Notable Actors: Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Anthony Michael Hall
Tumblr media
Follow the Griswold family as they drive from Chicago to Walley World, a theme park located on the West Coast. This is one of the funniest travel movies ever made. Chevy Chase’s performance will make you wonder how the actor lost his comedic edge for so many years.
During the Griswold’s road trip, they encounter plenty of colorful characters and get themselves into outrageous situations. Anything that could go wrong does go wrong:
Clark (Chevy Chase) accidentally kills the family pooch The family gets lost in the desert An elderly relative dies midway through the trip The final insult breaks Clark’s already fragile psyche: when they reach Walley World, they find that the park is closed. Clark loses his mind, buys a gun, and forces a security guard to let his family into the empty park. They get to enjoy the rides for a while. But the cops eventually show up, prompting Clark to give a moving speech that somehow keeps them all out of jail.
Up
Director: Pete Docter and Bob Peterson
Year: 2009
Notable Actors: Edward Asner, Bob Peterson, Joran Nagai
Tumblr media
Up is a heartwarming story about an old man, Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), who refuses to leave his home even though a real estate developer constantly threatens to force him out. Throughout his life, Carl has been a homebody unwilling to take many risks. His wife, however, always encouraged him to take chances. They saved for decades so they could afford an adventurous vacation.
After his wife passes away, Carl loses interest in life.
During an argument with a construction worker, Carl accidentally punches a worker. This forces him to move into a retirement home. Carl refuses to give up, though, so he fills a large number of balloons with helium so that his house will float away.
Unbeknownst to him, a young Boy Scout named Russell (Jordan Nagai) is on his property. The balloons take Carl and Russell to South America, where they meet a pack of talking dogs and their master, a world traveler whom Carl idolizes.
Things turn sour between them when Carl’s hero tries to catch an exotic bird in Russell’s care. The adventure turns into a race to save the bird, their own lives, and the spirit of living freely.
Encounters at the End of the World
Director: Werner Herzog
Year: 2007
Notable Actors: Werner Herzog, Scott Rowland, Stefan Pashov
Tumblr media
Werner Herzog has made plenty of documentaries and movies in exotic places, but none of them have the charm, humor, and adventure of Encounters at the End of the World. In this film, Herzog and his crew travel to Antarctica to meet people living outside of social norms.
The team meets plenty of interesting characters, including animal researchers, a scientist studying neutrinos, a diver with an extensive sci-fi movie collection, an a pipefitter who has a hand anomaly that, he says, proves he is Aztec royalty.
It’s an interesting look at the kind of people who choose to live in a place as frozen and harsh as Antarctica. It also has magnificent images that will make viewers yearn to visit one of the planet’s coldest places. While watching the film, Antarctica seems like a viable vacation plan.
The Motorcycle Diaries
Director: Walter Salles
Year: 2004
Notable Actors: Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo de la Serna
Tumblr media
When Che Guevara was a 23 years old, he and his friend Alberto Granado decided to travel across South America on motorcycles. At the time, Che was known as Ernesto Guevara de la Sema. He wasn’t a revolutionary leader. He was a med student with one semester of study left.
The Motorcycle Diaries uses Che’s journal entries to explore the difficult relationship he had with his friend, the difficulties of traveling with little money on old motorcycles, and, perhaps most importantly, how Che learns from Communists that he meets in Chile. It’s a journey that changed the young man’s life forever. It’s also an entertaining movie about adventure and self-discovery.

Johnnie Taylor
Tumblr media
Johnnie Harrison Taylor (May 5, 1934 – May 31, 2000) was a three-time Grammy-nominated American recording artist and songwriter who performed a wide variety of genres, from blues, rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel to pop, doo-wop, and disco.
Biography
Early years
Johnnie Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas, United States. He grew up in West Memphis, Arkansas, performing in gospel groups as a youngster. As an adult, he had one release, "Somewhere to Lay My Head", on Chicago's Chance Records label in the 1950s, as part of the gospel group Highway QCs, which had been founded by a young Sam Cooke. Taylor's singing then was strikingly close to that of Cooke, and he was hired to take Cooke's place in the latter's gospel group, the Soul Stirrers, in 1957.
A few years later, after Cooke had established his independent SAR Records, Taylor signed on as one of the label's first acts and recorded "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day" in 1962. However, SAR Records quickly became defunct after Cooke's death in 1964.
In 1966, Taylor moved to Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was dubbed "The Philosopher of Soul". He recorded with the label's house band, which included Booker T. & the M.G.'s. His hits included "I Had a Dream", "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby" (both written by the team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter) and most notably "Who's Making Love", which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1968. "Who's Making Love" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. In 1970, Taylor married Gerlean Rocket and they remained married until his death in 2000.
During his tenure at Stax, he became an R&B star, with over a dozen chart successes, such as "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone", which reached No. 23 on the Hot 100 chart, "Cheaper to Keep Her" (Mack Rice) and record producer Don Davis's penned "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)", which reached No. 11 on the Hot 100 chart. "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)" also sold in excess of one million copies, and was awarded gold disc status by the R.I.A.A. in October 1973. Taylor, along with Isaac Hayes and The Staple Singers, was one of the label's flagship artists, who were credited for keeping the company afloat in the late 1960s and early 1970s after the death of its biggest star, Otis Redding, in an aviation accident. He appeared in the documentary film, Wattstax, which was released in 1973.
Columbia Records
After Stax folded in 1975, Taylor switched to Columbia Records, where he recorded his biggest success with Don Davis still in charge of production, "Disco Lady", in 1976. It spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and six weeks at the top of the R&B chart. It peaked at No. 25 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1976. "Disco Lady" was the first certified platinum single (two million copies sold) by the RIAA. Taylor recorded several more successful albums and R&B single hits with Davis on Columbia, before Brad Shapiro took over production duties, but sales generally fell away.
Malaco Records
After a short stay at a small independent label in Los Angeles, Beverly Glen Records, Taylor signed with Malaco Records after the company's founder Tommy Couch and producing partner Wolf Stephenson heard him sing at blues singer Z. Z. Hill's funeral in spring 1984.
Backed by members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, as well as in-house veterans such as former Stax keyboardist Carson Whitsett and guitarist/bandleader Bernard Jenkins, Malaco gave Taylor the type of recording freedom that Stax had given him in the late 1960s and early 1970s, enabling him to record ten albums for the label in his 16-year stint.
In 1996, Taylor's eighth album for Malaco, Good Love!, reached number one on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart (No. 15 R&B), and was the biggest record in Malaco's history. With this success, Malaco recorded a live video of Taylor at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, in the summer of 1997. The club portion of the Good Love video was recorded at 1001 Nightclub in Jackson, Mississippi.

(Season 2, Episode 5. November 16, 2011).
