Road trip to Basilicata

We left San Pietro in Bevagna early this morning for a two hour drive to Matera, one of my favorite spots in the area. This meant we left Puglia and entered the Basilicata region. It's not totally clear from driving how things are different, but the olive groves and vineyards did make way to more plains and open farms and many wind turbines. We made our way up the hills and took a quick hike/walk to one of the belvederes outside the city, and then drive around the ravine to enter the city proper.

Amazingly enough, we found a free parking space on street just 10 minute walk to our airbnb. The place we are staying is really great - just off the main pedestrian street. There are two balconies, a spiral staircase, the best showers we've had this whole trip (better than our own?), and just overall a cozy, well accommodated place. Hannah did not want to leave the apartment.

We grabbed some lunch and really good gelato, and then went exploring. We visited two of the cave dwellings, which Hannah really liked, the largest cistern that people somehow forgot about from 1930 to 1991, when they found it during a repaving project, and a few churches built into the rocks. The heat and the stair climbing made today a brutal day (and a three gelato day). However, once the sun went down below the hills, it was perfect. Strollers are useless here, so Hannah was a trooper on all the stairs (a cranky trooper, but a trooper nonetheless). Matera is a place to see during the day as much as it is a nighttime destination.

We had dinner in a cave and then enjoyed walking around on the main pedestrian street before calling it a night.

This nighttime energy is so hard to replicate at home. Everyone is out - old, young, and in between - and everyone is out socializing. We've smelled no marijuana or any other drug use, seen very few homeless people, and so it's safe and maybe because people take a nap during the day, they can all stay up past midnight EVERY NIGHT, and even the little kids and teenagers are out together. They were setting up for a concert in the main plaza at 10 PM!? There is nothing like this back at home in our world but I assume that the issues of isolation and loneliness have to be minimal (or non existent) here compared to the US because people actually are out together all the time.

PS tonight was the first time I had to throw away a gelato. A licorice gelato, no less! I didn't read the sign and apparently it was milk free and therefore the most intense flavor I have ever encountered. It was inedible.
