Tonight, if anywhere was the place to be, it was the Blue Velvet Lounge. Marlene Sato made sure of that.

Marlene graciously smiled at her guests. They danced merrily to the jazz band, laughing amuck and spilling their drinks. Marlene excused their behaviors with a frail smile. Even though she was disturbed that the attendees showed no grace, she had to remember these people were partying for a good cause.

This event was a last minute effort to raise funds for her charity, Every Child Deserves. Marlene was only a few thousand dollars away from her goal and year end was quickly approaching. Marlene knew in order to shrink the gap, she needed to pick up the phone and called a person who knew a person and everything would be squared away.

“You remember I have to work in the morning right?” Bethany questioned. She peered over at Sabrina across the table. Bethany Landers had driven for hours from San Myshuno to be here with Sabrina Fox tonight.

“Of course. You have to work everyday.” Sabrina answered. Bethany released a deep sigh that flickered the table’s candle.

“Excuse me,” a voice as crisp as freshly washed cotton sheets, shot through the room.

“Oh my.” The words fell from Bethany’s lips. Sabrina peered over the balcony at the woman in the red coat. Bethany had heard so much about her but this was her first time seeing her in the flesh.

The woman easily commanded the room’s attention.

“Thank you for attending Every Child Deserves holiday charity event. I am grateful to be able to gather such kind and generous people together for a great cause. I remember looking forward to Winterfest as a child. For me, it wasn’t just about the gifts. I loved watching Winterfest films with my family while drinking hot chocolate and wearing matching pajamas with my sister. And at ECD, we believe every child deserves to have such fond memories too. So I promise that every dollar donated will be matched by one of our lovely sponsors.” The crowd erupted into an applause.

“Thank you. As promised, open bar is until midnight. As we wrap things up tonight, please keep in mind the children and remember they too deserve a chance to experience holiday joy!”

The cheering continued as Marlene made her way off stage.

“She sure knows how to work a crowd.” Beth commented. Sabrina nodded her head and took a long sip of her drink. “Yeah, she always knows just the right things to say.”

Bethany peered at the her phone. It was quarter after eleven. Bethany released another loud sigh as a signal that it was time to go. This time, Sabrina obliged and the ladies made their way downstairs.

“My dear.” It was a familiar voice that had stopped Sabrina and Beth in their tracks. Quickly approaching them was thee Marlene Sato.

In close proximity, Bethany could better make out Marlene’s face. As the ladies exchanged greetings, Bethany quietly compared the two. She has always known Sabrina to be beautiful but Marlene was absolutely breathtaking. There was just something about Marlene that just glowed.

“Marlene, this is my top client, Beth.” Sabrina introduced.

“Ah, yes! Mayor Bethany Landers. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you! I know it was a long drive from San Myshuno. Thank you for being here.” Marlene said.

“I should go to the ladies room before we leave. Marley, keep my client company.” Sabrina said before running off.

“I may be Sabrina’s client but I’m definitely a long time friend too. I’m glad to finally meet you too! Sabrina says so many great things about you, Mrs. Sato. I think tonight was fantastic. Great turn out! I throw events like this too. Actually, I’m having one next week. Please join us.” Bethany said. Having The Satos, the owners of today’s most prominent company in technology, at her holiday party would be a great look for Mayor Landers. Her inner circle would die if she could pull this off.

“Of course I’ll be there. And I’ll make sure my husband is there too. It’s the least I can do since you came all this way and made such a generous donation for such a great cause.” Bethany smirked.

Perfect.

The ladies continued their cordial conversation until Sabrina rejoined them. Marlene gave Sabrina a warm hug before dismissing herself to go mingle amongst the last few patrons.

“What do you think of her?”

“She’s…pleasant.” Sabrina nodded in agreement. That was a perfect word to describe her sister – pleasant.

The night was finally over. As the last few patrons made their way out the door, Marlene made her way to the bartender.

“No thank you, sir. I think I’m just going to grab the donations and head home. I’m exhausted.” Marlene imagined kicking off her shoes, taking a hot shower and then fall asleep next to her husband, who was probably still up working too.

“Madame. Great event. How about a toast to celebrate?”

“Donations? Your assistant handled it already. He picked up all the checks not too long ago.”

“The other bartender, Mikayla, said that at the end of her shift, a man came up to her and said he was your assistant and collected all the payments. She told me before she left that she gave it to him. He said his name was Shio.”

Marlene froze at what the bartender revealed to her.

“Antonio, I don’t have an assistant.”

Chapter 18 - Sherrinford

Mycroft knew that if Eurus had escaped Sherrinford then the institution was no longer secure, and they couldn’t simply walk in. They would need to break in by any means necessary. He managed to commandeer a helicopter and found a boat sailing close by. Bethany’s eyes lit up as she made a suggestion, one that had Sherlock and John giggling like children, but if it got them in, then he would do it. For her.

He’d communicated with Sir Edwin, not trusting Lady Smallwood with the task of covering for him. When they called, they would be told that Mycroft was in hospital with little hope of pulling through.

The plan worked perfectly and the three of them were arrested with Sherlock posing as the guard. The Governor put the three of them in the holding cell and predictably sent the guard down to check on Eurus. Sherlock would finally meet his sister again.

‘I’m sparing your blushes because we’re supposed to be on the same side,’ he said sitting down. ‘And frankly, this is embarrassing.’

‘Oh. Doing a cavity search?’ Bethany asked, making John laugh. ‘I don’t think Mycroft would like that to happen to me.’

‘Miss Bethany Colbeck-‘

‘Wheeler. It’s Wheeler.’

‘Wheeler.’ The Governor corrected himself. ‘Mycroft Holmes’s girlfriend-‘

‘Friend.’

‘Not from what I hear. You’ll be upset then, to learn he’s in hospital. Little hope of pulling through.’

‘Right, where I left him then.’ Bethany smiled, confirming that Sir Edwin had in fact covered for them.

‘The true art of disguise, according to your famous friend is not being looked at,’ he moved on. ‘But I am looking at you, aren’t I Mr Holmes?’

‘Yes, you are.’ Mycroft enjoyed his performance as the sailor, but now it was time to bring it to an end.

‘But that is sort of the point, isn’t it?’ John turned to Bethany who smiled. Mycroft stood and began taking his disguise off. ‘See, you should have been looking at the guy you just gave your pass to.’

Mycroft revealed himself and smiled dramatically, making Bethany chuckle, that sound on it’s own made everything worth it. The Governor after getting red in the face, got him a fresh suit and Bethany helped him clean off the crap on his face.

‘That’s the trouble with uniforms and name badges,’ Mycroft said, adjusting his hair in the mirror. ‘People stop looking at faces. You’d be better off with clown outfits, at least they’d be satirically irrelevant.’

‘Oh, you’ll find the real landers on the North shore.’ John cut in. ‘Tied up with two others.’

‘Two others?’ The Governor confirmed.

‘Mm, well it was trial and error, we had to find the right waistband.’

Mycroft disliked what John was implying, but it was true, nonetheless.

‘This is insane. This is unnecessary.’

‘No, your security is compromised, and we don’t know who to trust.’

‘And that justifies dressing up?’

‘Yes, it does!’ Mycroft snapped, turning to face the Governor. ‘It justifies dressing up or any damn thing I say it does! Now, listen to me. For your own physical safety. Do not speak. Do not indulge in any non-verbal signal suggestive of internal thought. If the safety of my sister is compromised, if the security of my sister is compromised, if the incarceration of my sister is compromised, in short, if I find any indication my sister has left this island at any time, I swear to it, you will not!’ Mycroft felt the rage burning through his body, he had tunnel vision for a moment and could only focus on the Governor. ‘Say thank you to Miss Wheeler.’

‘Why?’

‘She talked me out of Lady Bracknell. This could have been very different.’ Mycroft explained, again making Bethany smile a little. ‘Are you in?’ He touched his earpiece.

‘Just arriving at the secure unit.’ Sherlock confirmed. ‘Explain.’

‘Prison within a prison.’ Mycroft said, placing his arms through his suit jacket that Bethany was kind enough to hold up for him. ‘Eurus must be allowed the strict minimum of human interaction.’

‘Why?’

‘Since you’re determined to meet her, you’re about to find out.’ Mycroft adjusted his suit and turned to Bethany, observing her dark eyes and taking what strength and courage he could from her radiant beauty. ‘Answer yes or no, has there ever been, against my express instructions, any attempt at a psychiatric evaluation of Eurus Holmes?’

‘Yes.’ The Governor answered.

‘I presume the tapes are in my office.’ Mycroft drawled.

‘Your office?’

‘Cast you mind back,’ he said leaving the holding cell. ‘It used to be yours.’

Mycroft led John and Bethany through the facility, keeping Bethany close at all times, he no longer cared for public image, they were in a hostile place and he would protect her at all costs.

They sat in what was the Governor’s office, now Mycroft’s and he played through the tapes of Eurus being evaluated. Bethany sat on the edge of the desk and got to work, she was there to pick on things that Mycroft missed and with the mood he was now in, it was very possible he would miss something important. The Governor just rolled his eyes at her playful nature.

‘You try telling her what to do.’ Mycroft grinned a little. ‘How do you think she got here?’

Mycroft requested silence while he tried to figure out what had happened during Eurus’s evaluation.

‘What is it?’ He asked. Bethany’s expression was off, she knew something but wasn’t saying it. ‘What did you see?’

‘I don’t know.’ She shook her head. ‘Something’s definitely not right though. Give me a moment.’

Mycroft held the silence for a few more minutes, observing the tapes the same way Bethany was, but her expression would change to something more frustrated on occasion. He decided to question the Governor when Bethany came up short, she could see something, but it was on the tip of her tongue, a fly in the ointment and she couldn’t quite grasp it.

‘Everyone we sent in there… it’s hard to describe,’ the Governor explained. ‘It’s like she…’

‘Recruited them.’ Mycroft filled in the blank, earning a quick glance from Bethany, but she still said nothing. John had decided to help her figure out what she was missing.

‘Enslaved them.’

‘She’s been capable of that since she was five. She’s an adult now. I warned you. I ordered you.’

The Governor just scoffed. ‘She’s clinically unique. We had to try.’

‘At what cost?’ Mycroft questioned, wanting to reach out and hold Bethany’s hand as it lay on the desk behind her. ‘What cost?... tell me the worst thing that has happened.’

‘She kept suggesting to Dr Taylor that he should kill his family.’ The Governor admitted. It earned him a look from Bethany, which Mycroft took great care in noticing.

‘And?’

‘He said it was like an ear worm, couldn’t get her out of his head.’

‘And?’

‘He left.’

‘And?’

‘Killed himself.’

‘And?’ Mycroft said in a much harsher tone.

‘His family.’

‘Jesus.’ Bethany breathed, standing up to pace for a moment. ‘Mycroft, I don’t know, I don’t know.’

Mycroft stood up, stopped her by the action alone. ‘Just breathe calmly. Refocus and try again.’

‘What’s she doing?’ The Governor asked curiously.

‘Fixing your mess.’ Mycroft snapped. ‘Bethany, sit down. Take a moment alone and refocus.’ Bethany surprisingly did as he asked. ‘I warned you explicitly.’ He turned his attention back to the Governor. ‘No one was to talk to her alone.’

‘You spoke to her.’

‘I know what I’m doing!’

‘You even brought her a visitor on Christmas Day.’ That got everyone’s attention.

‘I took a calculated risk.’

‘You gave her a Christmas present. Remember her Christmas present.’

‘I am aware of the dangers Eurus poses and equipped to deal with them.’

‘What dangers?’ John suddenly asked.

‘Eurus doesn’t just talk to people.’ Mycroft sighed. ‘She reprograms them. Anyone who spends time with her is automatically compromised.’

Bethany stood up and wandered closer to the screens.

‘I put my trust in you.’ Mycroft went on as John stepped outside for a moment. ‘My implicit trust as Governor of this institute.’

‘It’s obvious when it all started.’ The Governor seemed a little too cocky for Mycroft’s liking. ‘Well, she was never the same after that Christmas. It’s as if you woke her up.’

‘That is entirely beside the point, you had your orders and failed to act-‘

‘Listen to the tape.’ John said as he came back in.

‘It’s you.’ Bethany said, turning around to face them. ‘That’s your voice.’ She said, both she and Dr Watson were looking at the Governor and once again Mycroft was astounded he’d missed such a simple detail.

‘You said everyone that went in there was affected. Enslaved you said.’

‘So, just one question, if that’s your voice, who exactly is running this prison?’ Bethany folded her arms and her no nonsense face was one that even shook Mycroft to the core.

‘I’m sorry.’ The Governor said, standing up and bring out some kind of detonation button.

‘No, no, no.’ John tried to stop him.

‘I’m very sorry.’ The Governor clicked the button and the alarm sounded. Armed guard came in and surrounded the three of them and Mycroft had no idea what to do, they were no longer in control.

They were escorted out of the office and John had tried to make a break for it, but it was no use, he didn’t get very far and Bethany didn’t even try. They were taken down to Eurus’s cell and of course, she was no longer there. All four of them, plus the Governor were left alone.

Holisss!

Lo prometido es deuda, así que bajo el readmore  dejaré todo lo que tengo en drafts, coloqué titulo y la ship, esto para que recuerden(?? que pj es y la trama que llevábamos, en mi opinión estos threads ya están super viejos, mi culpa lo sé, pero quien guste seguir una trama parecida con los mismos personajes me puede decir y abrir algo nuevo :) basado en el hilo que llevábamos, y quien no, solo dígame para sacar todo de borradores.

“Are you sure you have to leave so soon?” Sabrina begged. She could still feel Bethany's hands over her from the night before. She hoped a few more moments with her wasn't too much to ask.

Bethany giggled at the pleading Sabrina managed to fit in-between the goodbye kisses Sabrina was drowning her in.

“I have a meeting that I can’t miss in the city.” Bethany apologized. It pained Bethany to stay for the night and leave at the crack of dawn but unfortunately, this was the way things needed to be. Being mayor meant Bethany had to prioritize the city’s needs before her own. Even if that need was a certain desire for her lover.

“Do you kiss all of your clients like this?” Bethany teased.

“Only my top clients.”

Sabrina felt like Bethany’s lips fit perfectly with hers. If she could, she would sit here all day with Bethany, just kissing, giggling, and touching.

Sabrina’s phone broke the lovers out of their bliss. Sabrina quickly scrolled through to check her notifications. Like Beth, she knew that her clients’ needs were sometimes a higher priority than her own.

“Duty calls?” Bethany asked.

“Not necessarily. It’s Marlene… Oh no.”

“What’s wrong?” Bethany questioned. She could see the immediate shift in Sabrina’s mood. Sabrina reread the text that was sent to make sure she understood what she was going to say.

“Someone stole all of the donations from last night.” Sabrina admitted.

"Who in their right mind would steal from a charity that supports children? Call the police! They can’t get away with something as vile as that.” Bethany suggested.

Sabrina hesitated before responding. “She can’t…”

“What do you mean? Just let the police find the guy and have them deal with it.”

“My sister and her family have been stalked and harassed for years now. They’ve gone to the police before and nothing comes out of it. And now I think the situation is bigger than that. They need real help.”

Mayor Landers understood what she meant. Mayor Landers had been blackmailed, extorted and even held for ransom but each and every time she has gotten her revenge. But coming up on top in these sticky situations means getting your hands just as dirty. It’s always a game with no winners.

“I know someone who can help them.”

Ken planned a peaceful morning with his wife. Cuddles in bed and coffee in the morning. But when he woke up, Marlene’s side of the bed was cold. As he begrudgingly made his way to the kitchen, he was disappointed that his wife already started the morning without him.

Marlene could hear the disappointment walking towards the kitchen. “Sorry. I went through the first pot by myself. I couldn’t sleep.” Marlene admitted without looking up.

“How was last night?”

“Our friend Shio made a visit. He stole all of the donations. Every last check.”

“I’m sorry, Marlene. I know you worked hard for that event.” Ken consoled his wife but his words went in one ear and through the other.

“We moved all the way from Mt. Komorebi to Willow Creek and we’re still getting stalked! When are we going to do something about this?”

Ken didn’t have an answer for his wife. In his mind, moving was doing something but clearly, that wasn’t enough.

“I’ll handle it. And I’ll cover whatever was stolen. And I’ll still match the donations like I originally promised.” Ken said. A tiny smile pulled at the corners of Marlene’s lips but it was quickly dismissed with the thought of the last two years of her life.

Ken could afford to write a check and make the situation disappear but Shio always came back. This left Marlene restless. She was constantly looking over her shoulder and wondering who was watching her. Someone had to be if they knew exactly when to stop by The Blue Velvet to pick up the donations. And why were they stalking the Satos?

That question lingered on her mind. Sure there were people that they pissed off through out the years but what could they have possibly done to deserve this type of behavior?

Marlene thought back to the moment that when she received that box on her doorstep. The box was plain and unassuming yet what was inside haunted her. It left Marlene so disturbed that she urged her husband to move the family all the way to Willow Creek.

This time she isn’t going to run or hide. If Shio was back, this time had to be different. This time Marlene needed to fight.

Oh, man. Okay, so DA:O, any of the love interests in that game? They’re such quality. I love them all. Zevran “No Boundaries/I Picked the Warden For Fuck, Marry, and Kill” Aranai, he’s my D&D character. Morrigan is all snark and I love her for that, plus she’s... actually kind of heartbreaking, a little bit? That line about not being worthy of your friendship. Ugh. Kills me. Alistair! Oh my god, Alistair, you clumsy puppy dog of a person. He was my Warden’s best friend. And I fucked up so bad. And then Leliana. Oh, Leliana in simpler, most innocent times. Silly, sweet, happy Leliana. 

Dragon Age 2! I love all of my companions. (Earlier that day: “I don’t care for Carter.”) But no, this game took all the time they could have spent on designing new caves or something, and instead made the characters fantastic. You’ve got Varric, who is actually me as a dwarf. You’ve got Aveline “Guard-Captain Mom” Vallen. You’ve got Isabella, the pirate queen of my heart. You’ve got Fenris, who lives in an abandoned mansion and doesn’t believe in furniture, only vengeance. You’d got Merrill, who believes in furniture too much. You’ve got Bethany, who is just sweet. And then you’ve got... *reads smudged handwriting* Ann Landers, who is just great with advice, I guess? 

And then Inquisition. I mean, Varric again. The sheer braggadocio potential of a team of Varric, the Iron Bull, and Dorian is brilliant. And Cassandra is all no-nonsense and ready to punch anything in the face as needed. I love Vivienne, because she really made me reconsider my stance on the Circles (from “Shitty” to “Shitty but sometimes necessary”) and that led to some interesting character stuff for my Inquisitor. And all the advisers, they are the best.

So basically I love all of them, pretty much.
